11 best small screw extractors
Small screw extractors are tools designed to help remove damaged or stripped screws from various materials, such as wood, metal, or plastic. They are especially useful when a screw's head has become worn or damaged, making it difficult to turn with a screwdriver or drill. These extractors are related to tap extractors, taps, dies, and fall under the category of hand tools or power hand tools. Here's what you need to know about small screw extractors:
Features and Functions:
Reverse Spiral Design: Small screw extractors typically have a reverse spiral or fluted design. These spirals are designed to grip into the damaged screw's head when turned counterclockwise, allowing for extraction.
Multiple Sizes: Screw extractors come in various sizes to accommodate different screw sizes. Choosing the right size is crucial for effective removal.
Construction: They are commonly made from high-strength materials like hardened steel or carbon steel, ensuring durability and longevity.
Versatile: Small screw extractors can be used with various screw types, including Phillips, slotted, hex, Torx, and more.
How to Use a Small Screw Extractor:
Preparation: Start by drilling a small hole into the center of the damaged screw with a drill bit.Make sure the hole is deep enough for the extractor to grip.
Insert the Extractor: Insert the small screw extractor into the drilled hole, ensuring a secure fit.
Turn Counterclockwise: Using a wrench or a tap handle, turn the extractor counterclockwise. The reverse spiral design will grip into the damaged screw head and help turn it out.
Patience: Be patient and gentle during the extraction process, as excessive force can break the extractor or further damage the screw.
Alternative Methods: In some cases, it may be necessary to tap the extractor with a hammer to help it bite into the screw. Lubricating the area with penetrating oil can also aid in extraction.
Benefits:
Cost-Effective: Small screw extractors can save money by salvaging screws that would otherwise need to be replaced along with the material they're in.
Time-Saving: They can be a time-saving tool, especially when dealing with multiple damaged screws that need removal.
Reduced Frustration: Extracting a damaged screw can be frustrating without the right tools. Screw extractors simplify the process and reduce the likelihood of damage to the surrounding material.
Considerations:
Safety: When using a small screw extractor, be cautious not to exert too much force, as this can lead to broken extractors or further damage to the screw or material.
Proper Sizing: Choose the extractor size that matches the screw you need to remove. An extractor that is too small or too large may not work effectively.
Alternative Methods: In some cases, if the screw is severely damaged, it may be necessary to consider alternative methods, such as drilling out the entire screw and re-tapping the hole.
In summary, small screw extractors are handy tools designed to remove damaged or stripped screws, allowing for the salvage of materials and reducing the need for expensive replacements. Proper use and the right-sized extractor are essential for effective screw removal.

User questions & answers
Question: | Smallest size |
Answer: | As long as the screw is large enough. |
Question: | Hi, will this work on an 1/8 inch Hex bolt |
Answer: | These four bits did not fit into my screw driver that accepts bits. I do think you have a better than even chance to remove a lap top screw. You can also get a carbide tipped drill of the right diameter and just drill the screw out. Make sure you don't use to big a diameter or you won't get a new screw into it. |
Question: | Where is this manufactured? Avoiding Chinese products like the inferior screws I'm needing this for |
Answer: | The smallest BIT 1 has DRILL side thickness 2.8mm and Extractor side thickness 2.5mm. Anything over 3mm is doable considering its done correctly and as Dave said it should be centrally aligned. |
Question: | Would this work on a stripped screw head on an external hard drive |
Answer: | If you can fit the smallest extractor in your screw it will. It doesnt even need to go fully in. I extracted a small phillips head screw on a car starter that was not only torqued in hard but had been "weathered" into place over 150,000 miles of road & weather. I got the tip of the smallest one in about 1/3 to less than 1/2 way of its height and it bit in & got the screw out. Dont use a drill, its fast spin could strip the screw or extractor. I used a 1/4 ratchet and socket but I had a set that had the fine spiral threads on one end & 1/4 socket interface on the other. You could use pliers or vise grips with these on small screws. A very gentle tap can set it in place & in less than 2 turns it should fully bite in and back out the screw, these are fantastic removers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi I need extractors that can work on small screws such as 2mm-6mm will this set do it or is there another |
Answer: | the manufacturers site has the sizes of screws for these. I think these will work but check the site |
Question: | The head of a 1/8" screw broke off when trying to drill the screw in Drywall. Will this work to remove the broken screw thats stuck inside my drywall |
Answer: | I wouldn't recommend it. The Grabit is designed to remove a screw (in your case a drywall screw), where the slots in the head of the screw have been worn or damaged to the extent that the driver can't get enough "bite" to turn it. The Grabit drills into the head of the screw to the depth and width that allows the reverse-threaded extractor to get enough "bite" to turn and back out the damaged screw. In your case I assume that the head of the screw broke-off, so there's an insufficient metal surface for the Grabit to do its job. If the screw stem extends out beyond the surface of the drywall, I'd suggest grabbing it with a pair of vise-grips and turning it back out. But, use care as drywall crumbles like a stale cookie. Now, if the screw shaft is below the surface of the drywall, then spackling and a putty knife will do the trick. |
Question: | Will this work for a stripped set screw in a bathroom delta faucet handle? Anyone know? Thanks |
Answer: | While I can't speak to your specific faucet, many do have small screws that this kit would be successful for. |
Question: | Will this work on pentalobe screws on the MacBook Pro 13" retina display |
Answer: | Yes, the Micro Grabit® 4 Piece Kit contains the Micro Grabit® #1 that is rated down to 3mm head size. The MacBook Pro 13" Retina uses a eight 3 mm and two 2.3 mm pentalobe screws externally to attach the bottom plate of the case to the internal frame. |
Product description
First of all, our product hardness is 64 HRC-65 HRC, if the damaged screw hardness is higher than that, which will make the extractor bit shear off into bolt easily. Please contact Jellas first when you decided to purchase. We will tell if this product suits or not. Another important thing is that you should be careful of the working speed of the electric drill, and should keep the speed under 200 rpm, as the bit may break for high speed use. Also you can use a wrench to extractor. The lower speed, the better, which will also help you not make the frictional locking force out of control and protect the screw extractors not breaking.
- [Technology-Leading] - Jellas 22pcs damaged screw extractor set made by HSS material can create more extraction possibilities for broken screws or bolts of different sizes (2-12mm) and can work on irregular and jagged irregular cuts; Extra gift of 2 common sizes (#3 & #6) enhances the longer service life of the product
- [Most Cost-effective] - HSS material with maximum protection against rust and corrosion, hardness can reach 64.5 HRC for strength, flexibility and durability; The notches on the extractor bits produce greater force for bolts that are difficult to remove; Aluminum box packaging, delicate and durable, can be presented as gifts to friends and relatives
- [Switching Tips Freely] - With the support of extension tips and a socket adapter, the separately designed burnishing tips and extraction tips allow for switching at will without wasting time and energy
- [Meet Any Requirement] - The extension bit holder (6.35 mm) and the socket adapter (4 mm) of the screw removal set fit all electric drills of any brand; The magnetism inside the support and the adapter prevents the tips from falling
- [Simple to Use] - The manual is included, everybody knows how to use; Separated burnishing tips (for perforation) and extraction tips simplify the working process, it is not necessary to turn the extractor upside down and rotate the drill holder again to extract

JELLAS Damaged Screw Extractor
Designed Tools seed New Stories
If you forget the pilot hole or drive a screw too quickly, a power screwdriver can spin its bit fast enough to strip away the cross or other shape in a screw. Once that’s gone, the screw can’t be driven deeper or backed out. For screws where the stripped screw head rests flush with the wood (and you don’t want to risk damage to your project), then you may need a screw extractor.
Jellas 22 pieces extractor screws to extract screws made of advanced High Speed steel (H.S.S), twice tempered for extra hardness and is up to 64-65HRC; It can extract screws from 2 to 12 mm. Our screw extractor set works with any drill and any size of screw or bolt, great for those stubborn, broken, blocked or damaged and also for simple removal of screws, Jellas Screw extractors are designed to help you with that.
Attentions
The screw extractor is to keep the frictional locking force between the #drill/#extr bits and the damaged screws under control which will take a few more times if you are a new user.
First of all, our product hardness is 64 HRC-65 HRC, if the damaged screw hardness is higher than that, which will make the extractor bit shear off into bolt easily. Please contact out seller center first when you decided to purchase.
Instructions for Use
Drilling the Screw
Step1, It is better to use a drill rather than a screwdriver.
Step2, Please press the reverse button on the drill to prepare the electric drill for use.(Don’t need to reset the reverse button the whole process.)
Step3, Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw. Hold the drill bits up to the screw or fastener you need to remove. The right one will be slightly less wide than the screw head. When you find the right one, attach it to your drill.
Step 4, Line the drill bit up with the center of the screw. Place the drill bit in the divot you created earlier. Move slowly as you begin to drill. Too much force will damage the screw. Focus on holding the drill bit steady so it drills straight down into the screw head.
Step5, Drill a hole for the extractor. You will need to drill somewhere between 1⁄8 inch (3.2 mm) and 1⁄4 inch (6.4 mm) into the screw head. The depth depends on the screw extractor you have. Hold up the extractor to compare it to the hole you drilled. If the extractor doesn’t fit, keep drilling to widen the hole.
Pulling out the Screw
Step1, Insert the extractor into the drilled hole. The spiral end of the extractor goes into the hole. You can tap it with a hammer to make sure it’s in there, but don’t force it. The loose end should have a tap handle, which looks like a T, for you to hold onto. Twist the extractor counterclockwise until you can’t turn it anymore.
Step2, Twist the extractor with a wrench or drill. Grip the top of the extractor with a wrench. Continue to twist it counterclockwise until the screw pops free. Many extractors are designed to work with drills. Attach the free end of the extractor to the drill and turn on the drill to turn the screw counterclockwise. It’ll come out without much resistance.

Question: | Will this be able to remove a 4mm diameter screw which the head has broken off of |
Answer: | You might also want to check out the Grabit Micro kit http://www.amazon.com/Alden-4507P-Grabit-Broken-Extractor/dp/B000Q60UOO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403282910&sr=8-1&keywords=grabit+micro as it has the smallest screw removers made. |
Question: | Need this to take the bolts out from my fender. Is this strong enough |
Answer: | size of the bolt matters, pre soak with wd-40 to break down rust , try loosening first with wrench if screw under 1/4 inch these will work just fine, pre-drill and use remover head on electric drill, air drill is too strong and will strip out. |
Question: | I can't figure out what grade bolts are for license plates. I have 4 of them with broken heads. Is this kit strong enough |
Answer: | license plate bolts should not be any heavier than grade 4These extractors are the greatest, I removed broken steel bolts that the head had stripped out-follow the instructionsthey are amazing!!!! |
Question: | will these work on 1/4" corroded stainless steel screws |
Answer: | I just tried to use them to remove some 1/4-20 stainless flat head screws that were corroded into a piece of aluminum. The #2 tool, which is spec'd for 1/4" fasteners, broke with very little effort. Since the heads were big enough, I then tried to use the #4 tool, which is supposedly strong enough to remove 3/8" fasteners, and it broke too. I don't expect miracles from these tools but I do expect that they would strip the fastener head before breaking themselves. I consider this a design flaw and would not recommend them for really tough jobs. |
