About Gerber: A History of Innovation

Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that have contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.

It makes sense, really. An idea man gets the idea of a lifetime and turns it into a major outdoor brand--one that commands respect among knife lovers and knife makers alike. And now that same high regard is spreading in new directions, in the form of many outstanding products such as tools, personal L.E.D. lighting, and more.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the knife stay in the closed position? I'd like to use this as a money clip and I do not want it to open in my pocket. Thanks
Answer: On Amazon website "click" on the title for the bed sheets from Hearth & Harbor. Under the title you will see VISIT THE HEARTH & HARBOR STORE. You are then directed to their website.
Question: What is the community experience with taking this thru TSA screening, minus the blade
Answer: This is impossible, I have had bedbugs in the past and run a successful bedbugs blog for the past 7 years. Bedbugs only thrive where there is a food source, and a company that produces sheets isn't an ideal location to nest for them.
Question: Doesn't look ergonomic. I can see blisters with extended use. Opinions
Answer: I have washed them several times and no pills so far.
Question: Which replacement blades do you use with this knife? I tried the Lenox gold blades and they're too narrow and won't fit snugly
Answer: No, it is only made as a pocket holster

User questions & answers

Question: How do you take off the blade? Can I see a video or picture
Answer: It doesn't have an edge it is simply a flashlight bottle opener. TSA hasn't stopped me I have had it in my backpack often.
Question: Is this too bulky on a keybak retractable keyring with other frequently used keys
Answer: i would say water resistance not waterproof. i had this on my rain jacket that i wear to work and one day it started to rain and i didnt think twice about it till the light wouldn't turn off. so i think water got inside and short circuited some thing. i now just keep it on my key chain and havnt had a problem sense.
Question: Is this small enough to fit in the change pocket of jeans
Answer: It does not look replaceable. You might be able to press the insert out of the center and swap them. I also use Photon lights. You can change the batteries but it's easier to throw them away and get another.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: It is not meant to, but if you had no other options it might work. The prybar is part of the bottle opener.

User questions & answers

Question: I have one of these, and it is great, but that sharp point has poked me a couple of times! Any xacto blades like #10 with rounded tips that fit it
Answer: All prior answers are simply lacking enough detail. Yes: in a pinch, this can absolutely be used to open cans. Now, there are many types of cans, but here's some details: - If you are referring to beverage cans + The pry bar can fit under the tab if you cannot pull it with your fingertips/fingernails + The piercing tip of the Phillips-head can easily pierce the side of an aluminium can > Usage for draining into a cup > Usage for "shotgunning" beers (can easily and quickly create a hole in the bottom-side of the can) - If you are referred to canned food + You can work the bottle opener around the rim, piercing the top lid 20-30 times + The Phillips-head comes quite sharp and pointy, and it could likely be used to pierce a can as needed (to drain, or to open around the edge of the lid) + There are certainly easier options, but this is so easy to carry with you any time you are away from home (since it is designed to be on your key-chain) and you may rely on this use when you don't have something better
Question: Does the blade lock
Answer: Maybe... The tip isn't all that sharp, but I've used it to cut open boxes sealed with packing tape. You probably could use this to cut open the orange peel, but I'm sure a knife would be more effective.
Question: How many blades come with this knife
Answer: Yes it easily opens a beer bottle with a single pry / motion. Only thing you'll notice is the holding the tool is like 15% awkward the first time you do it. I also searched for a keychain multi-tool that had to have a quality bottle opener. The edge that grips is pointed and wide enough. Perfect.
Question: What is the difference between the new and the old design
Answer: Mine was confiscated at Kuwait City airport. All tools, no matter the size or shape, are prohibited in carry-ons there.

User questions & answers

Question: Why are the listed dimensions so ridiculously off? No way is it 9 inches by 5.5 inches
Answer: That sounds more like the dimensions of the "packaging" the knife comes in. The knife dimensions are at the top: (Blade length 2.90-Inch, overall length 7.35-Inch and closed length 4.45-Inch)
Question: Do you have a 5 inch blade version
Answer: From my understanding, Gerber only produces this length. There is another model, with a tanto blade form, but the length is the same. So no, they do not.
Question: Mine came with rough burrs inside the finger hole. How can I remove those so it's smooth
Answer: dremel tool
Question: what is the full size of this knife?? i didn’t understand
Answer: just under 5.5in closed and 7.25in with blade out from blade tip to end of handle. blade itself is slightly under 3in
Question: Is the clip able to be switched
Answer: No it can’t be switched.
Question: Where is it manufactured
Answer: I’m holding it in my hand now. Don’t see anything on it that says Made In.......... It has a US Patent number on it. Does that mean it’s made in USA. Doesn’t really matter. This is the best quick change blade on the market. I’ve had one for over 10 years. I found these on Amazon. They are the same quality. I ordered 5 backups in case they stop selling them. Lol
Question: what is the thickness of the handle (not including the clip
Answer: just over 3/8 of an inch or 11 mm.
Question: Does this have a plastic or metal handle
Answer: The whole knife is metal. There are no plastic parts on THIS model. The handle is painted aluminum with a nice 'grippy' pattern cut into it. There is another model that does have the plastic handle, but not this one.

User questions & answers

Question: Can someone send a pic showing size in relation their hand? Trying to get a size visual. Thanks
Answer: I dont have a pic to send but it has a great feel in my hand, my hands are larger than average. Its a great knife that mimics the size of a folder but in the reliability of a fixed blade. Both the basic and the Epic are great knifes.
Question: What is measurement of the distance between the screws on the belt clip? Trying to figure out if I can make this a horizontal carry
Answer: " 1 " inch apart. You can horizontal wear if the belt loops are close together on your pants. Remember that the belt clip is reversible. So I would wear it with the belt clip phasing-out. The case of the knife has a thumb release which is tight at first. So if you cross draw the knife the case might come out together. To ensure that this doesn't happen. what you need to do is buy yourself a velcro strap so you could wrap it around your belt and then knife case. This will keep the case secure to your belt and your knife could be drawn easily.
Question: Can the belt clip be put on the other side of the sheath
Answer: Yes Clip is ambidextrous
Question: Will the Drop point knife work in a ghost strike sheath and visa versa
Answer: No it wont work in the Ghost Strike sheath.

User questions & answers

Question: I would use this for only opening boxes at home but have several questions
Answer: 1. The size can be deceiving. This knife fits my hand well and locks open solidly, and with a sharp blade, not much pressure is required. Especially for cutting packing tape and boxes, which is my primary use for the Gerber. When I first got the knife, I thought it would roll over in my hand, but this hasn't been a problem.2. When mine is closed, the folded knife is smooth all around. If this is a problem, maybe loosening the screw and jiggling the blade into a better position would fix that issue? I have only used the original blade to date.3. I haven't had any problems opening or closing the knife, but I can imagine someone with smaller or weaker fingers having difficulties at first. I'd assume after some use the lock will become a little easier to manipulate. Hope this helps, and after using it for a while now I am very happy with the knife.-Zach
Question: How to buy e.a.b. lite folding knife by gerber
Answer: Usually with a credit card
Question: Has anyone traveled in a airplane w this knive without the blade? so it would be tsa compliant, in a carry-on bag
Answer: I have forgotten I had is several times and gotten all the way home and realized it was in my carry with the blade still in.
Question: I've done everything I can think of to try to close the knife but it won't budge. Not sure if it's defective or what. No directions
Answer: there is a metal strip that springs out when the knife is opened. you have to manualy push it back to allow the knife to close. it is on the inside where it can hold the blade in place.

Product description

Folding Knife, Paraframe I, Liner Lock , Number of Blades 1, Blade Edge Fine, Blade Type Drop Point , Blade Length 3 In., Length Open 7 In., Closed Length 4-7/64 In., Blade Material Stainless Steel, Handle Material Stainless Steel, Handle Color Gray, One-Hand Operation No, Locking Blade Yes, Belt Clip Yes, Sheath N/A, Frame Lock Handle Design and Titanium Nitrade Coated Blade, Includes Lightweight Open Stainless Steel Handles, Application For Cutting

From the Manufacturer

If Gerber had settled for making just one version of the Paraframe knife, people might have been content. Because this reputable example of frame lock design caught on admirably among knife lovers...making the Gerber Paraframe a mainstay of the industry. But we figured there's no merit in being stingy, so we worked up a total of eight versions. And the people were pleased. There is a simplicity to this knife that relates as much to function as it does to form. It's a breeze to open. The clip point blade configuration is ideal for cutting in close quarters. Openness rules the day where the handle is concerned—there's more air than metal—so it's quite lightweight and quite easy to keep clean. Clip a Paraframe into your pocket, and you're fully equipped to take care of business. Your only challenge is figuring out which one...

  • Frame lock handle design
  • Lightweight open stainless steel handles
  • Sturdy Pocket Clip
  • Overall Length: 7.01
  • Length Closed: 4.11

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have dual thumb studs
Answer: Yes! It has thumb studs on both sides of the knife.
Question: What is the blade length? This is a basic knife specification and it's missing from the description. I assume it's 3 inches
Answer: Actual cutting edge is 3 inches.
Question: Mine is very hard to close, I have to pry the frame lock open. Is the a way to loosen this up? I carry a wood wedge with me
Answer: Mine is easy to one-hand open. Could be too tight (just loosen) or it could be manufacture issue. If it's new, get it replaced. If not new, try loosening it. Peace
Question: Is it a good size
Answer: It's a good sized knife fits in pockets well

User questions & answers

Question: Are there instructions on how the blade unfolds and how to change the blade? Mine came with none and online searches have produced no results
Answer: The stud on the folded blade is designed to be a thumb opening point. If the blade is stiff, just grab the back of the stud and pull it open with your other hand. The stud, when the blade is locked open, pushes downward slightly and released the razor blade. You can simply reverse the blade to get a new cutting edge. Replacing the blade can be done by pulling the old one straight out (while pushing downward on the stud) and slipping a new blade into the slot. Push the new blade in far enough to lock into the notches on the rear of the blade. It's actually simpler than it sounds and will take you 10 seconds with minimal practice.
Question: Does it come with any blades
Answer: It comes with one blade.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: I have a gerber knife that looks identical to the 31-000668. It is p/n 8970916A. There is no country of origin marking, but it has a US Pat# 6354007. I would guess that it's US made. Hope this helps.
Question: Mine doesn't seem to close. What's the secret
Answer: It has a liner lock so just move the liner to the side and close the blade.
