12 best cheap pocket knives

Cheap pocket knives are affordable, compact cutting tools that can fit into your pocket for everyday use. They are often popular for tasks such as opening packages, cutting cords, or performing light-duty cutting jobs. Here are some key points to consider when looking for an inexpensive pocket knife:

  1. Blade Material: Inexpensive pocket knives typically feature stainless steel blades. While they may not hold an edge as long as higher-quality blades, they are still functional for most everyday tasks.

  2. Blade Type: Pocket knives come in various blade types, including drop-point, tanto, serrated, and more. Choose a blade type that suits your intended use.

  3. Locking Mechanism: Ensure the knife has a reliable locking mechanism to keep the blade securely in place while in use. Common mechanisms include liner locks, frame locks, and back locks.

  4. Handle Material: Budget pocket knives often have handles made from materials like plastic, aluminum, or basic stainless steel. Choose a handle material that suits your preferences for grip and durability.

  5. Size: Pocket knives come in different sizes, from small keychain-sized options to larger folding knives. Consider the size that will best fit your needs and be comfortable to carry.

  6. Opening Mechanism: Look for an easy-to-use opening mechanism, such as thumb studs, flipper tabs, or nail nicks.Ensure that the knife is easy to open with one hand if needed.

  7. Pocket Clip: A pocket clip is a convenient feature for carrying your knife securely in your pocket without the need for a sheath. Check if the knife has a reversible or removable pocket clip.

  8. Price Range: Determine your budget before shopping for a cheap pocket knife. Prices can vary widely, so it's essential to set a reasonable spending limit.

  9. Brand Reputation: Some reputable knife brands offer budget-friendly options that still provide decent quality. Research brands with a history of producing reliable knives.

  10. Legal Considerations: Be aware of local laws and regulations regarding the carry and use of pocket knives in your area. Some places may have restrictions on blade length and locking mechanisms.

  11. Maintenance: Keep in mind that inexpensive pocket knives may require more frequent sharpening and maintenance compared to higher-end knives.

While cheap pocket knives may not offer the same level of craftsmanship and longevity as more expensive options, they can still serve as practical tools for everyday tasks. It's essential to prioritize safety and functionality when selecting a budget-friendly pocket knife that meets your needs.

User questions & answers

Question: what size are the star screws holding the belt clip on
Answer: If you can afford a carving jack why would you even consider buying this ??? don't get me wrong it's a good little knife for the money but it's bulky and not ergonomic at all your hand will hurt after a wile and the blades don't lock like the carving jack . You'll have to sharpen it to your liking ,but I rather loose a $ 25 knife in the woods than a $140 any day of the week. over all it's not a bad little knife once is sharpened
Question: What is the handle made of
Answer: We do not carry a left handed model.
Question: I bought this knife and opened it fine. Now I can't close it! Can someone please help
Answer: This is sad. I am 63 years old and remember when "Schrade" and "Uncle Henry" were brand names of knives you were PROUD to own and showed off to all your friends. Fortunately I do still have one old 'Uncle Henry" old enough to be of good quality. I recall sharpening a knife (Uncle Henry) for our Sgt and when he cut himself with it the doctor (took 12 stitches inside & out to sew him up) said it looked like he had been cut with a scalpel. I bet you couldn't get one of these new knives that sharp.
Question: Can you clean a deer with it
Answer: To all those complaining about the blades not locking, a blade lock was developed to keep a knife from closing when it is used to stab, like a folding skinner going through thick hide at the start of a cut (which is the wrong way to start that cut, too, by the way). If you are using this tool in any way that causes the blades to close on your fingers, you don't know how to use the tool, and you're looking for a hardware fix for a training deficiency. Stop blaming the tool and fix your ignorance. Nobody is born knowing how to use a carving knife, or any other type of knife, any more than they're born knowing how to use a hammer, saw, drill, gun, stove, oven, or jackhammer, and you shouldn't expect to expertly use a tool until you've spent some time learning how to.

User questions & answers

Question: Would you consider this good for self-defense
Answer: Designed & engineered in Oregon, made in China (says so on the packaging)
Question: Hi,can you take this knife to chile
Answer: No. It is a locking knife, but not a lockback. "Lockback" means there's a "spring loaded" (torsion bar, actually) locking leaver (rocker bar) located on the spine (back) of the frame which unlocks the blade when pressed. The locking mechanism for this knife is on the side of the frame (it's actually a part of the frame itself), near the pivot (same side as the pocket clip) and must be pulled back to unlock the blade. Since it has no "knob" and does not protrude from the frame, it can be a bit difficult to pull it back (it's very tight). It is very difficult (and not particularly safe) to close this knife with one hand.
Question: Do I have to sign for the knife
Answer: There are many kinds of stainless steel, as well as surface treatment and playing options. These have varying levels of corrosion resistance, and the environment matters as well. For example, SS430 will eventually gain rust, especially on untreated (e.g sharpened) surfaces. 304 will corrode in chlorinated environments (e.g. saltwater, chlorine). 316 corrodes under heavy alkalines (e.g. Sodium). There will always be something that is corrodes or oxidizes a metal, you just want to avoid metals incompatible with chemistry it may see for your use case. You shouldn't be surprised that your $8 knife may not be made of the most robust material available.
Question: Is this legal in Michigan
Answer: If you look on the back of the knife you will see a lock that is built in the frame (it is a bent piece of metal of the frame itself). You push down on the arm and close the blade.

Answer: Everyone seems have a different opinion of what is a good fit than I do. I bought a large tall, I am 5' 10" 165 lbs. Wear a 42 long jacket. The shirt I received is apparently of very good quality and color but it would easily fit two of me.

Question: Can this be Personalized
Answer: It’s the carhartt logo. Duh. Why would you remove the carhartt label??. If you don’t want a carhartt label then buy a non carhartt pocket t shirt.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this knife hold up to salt water
Answer: Spring release. However be advised the knife will sometimes open in your pocket. Inexpensive purchase and my blade does hold it's edge but I don't like it sometimes opening up in my pocket.
Question: Can this knife be engraved
Answer: Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I had one screw that fell out, caught it before lost; then tightened the others. I think the manufactures should add locktight or some other thing to hold this product together. Again, yeh, I know what you mean.
Question: As usual, I'm reading different blade lengths for this knife; 3.25, 3.5 and 3.7. Would someone please provide a precise blade measurement? Thank you
Answer: The blade simply says"440 stainless" I would not suggest buying this knife mine won't even stay closed after a day of use.
Question: Why do these say china when the ones in the kershaw "store" state they are made in america? are these knock offs or does kershaw have two grades
Answer: Gotta press your thumb into the cutout in the handle. Push to the side. Unless your talking about how it randomly opens, and is hard to keep closed. Then you gotta tighten the screws by the blade a bit.

Product features

High-Performance Steel

A budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics.

Attractive Blade Coating

Black oxide coating is a chemical bath, or conversion coating, that converts the surface of the blade steel to magnetite. Mainly for appearance, black oxide does add some mild corrosion resistance and tends to minimize light reflection from the blade. The blackening process gives the blade an attractive, smooth, tactical, fierce black surface that is very desirable to knife owners.

Fast Deployment

Using a torsion bar to move the blade out of the handle, Kershaw’s revolutionary SpeedSafe Assisted Opening system enables smooth, secure, fast one-handed blade deployment. Apply manual pressure to the flipper or thumb stud with a light push or pull back to overcome resistance of the torsion bar, and the blade opens smoothly and locks into place for confident handling without premature closure.

Secure Locking System

Kershaw’s frame lock design makes knives safer, securer, sturdier and quicker for one-handed blade deployment. The knife handle, or frame, has two metal plates on either side of the blade, and when open, the lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent blade closure. To close the knife blade, push the frame to the side to unlock the blade and fold the blade back into the handle.

One-Handed Flipper

Knives with SpeedSafe open have two options for one-handed blade deployment. To activate the smooth, instant open, user can push a thumbstud or press a flipper. The flipper on SpeedSafe assisted knives is easy to operate by both left- and right-handed users. And, once blade swings open and locks into place, flipper either disappears for aesthetics or remains visible for added finger protection.

Durable Handle

Very tough, able to take heavy-duty hard use, and versatile, glass-filled nylon handle material is a nylon synthetic polymer reinforced with glass threads for increased strength. Glass-filled nylon has incredible stiffness for a secure and stable grip, great ability to withstand heat, and dimensional stability combined with excellent wear resistance. Unique to certain Kershaw products, an exclusive and iconic texture is used on the handle to identify the brand and to provide additional traction when using the knife. The pattern is in a 'K' shaped repeating pattern to provide an extremely secure and safer grip. The K-Texture pattern ensures the user will always have a secure hold, even in slippery, wet, marine conditions.

Convenient Pocketclip

Stainless steel contains chromium to equip knife handles to withstand rusting and provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel offers durability and is often used in combination with another material to make for an easier grip. Offering excellent durability, stainless steel knife handles often incorporate etching, patterns, ridges or lines for a less slippery grip.

Attractive Blade Coating

Kershaw’s Bead-Blasted finish enhances a knife’s aesthetics and complements its end-use. The high-tech finish is achieved by applying a mixture of fine media onto the blade’s steel under high pressure, creating a smooth, non-reflective matte surface. Fine media includes glass and aluminum oxide beads that allow color variation and optimal performance results for an overall stunning effect.

With two steel plates, or liners, on the inside of each handle scale, the liner locking system safely secures the blade open and prevents unwanted blade closure. The lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent closure, and angles or is bent towards the blade tang creating a bias locked position. Apply manual force to move the lockbar to the side and fold the blade back into the handle.

Glass-filled nylon has incredible stiffness for a secure and stable grip, great ability to withstand heat, and dimensional stability combined with excellent wear resistance.

Convenient Pocketclip

Kershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. The reversible pocketclip allows user to choose to carry knife tip-up or tip-down or to choose on which side knife carries. The user may select either a preferred tip position or a preferred carry side.

Answer: That is a question for Kershaw. As far as I know all of this model are made in China. For one thing the price would be more if it was a USA knife, also the steel should be different. The 8Cr13MoV is a China steel.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the handle material of this blade
Answer: It does unscrew but I do not know if it is standard with other handles. I truly do NOT recommend this cane. It was extremely fragile and broke in half on the second day it was used. It was leaning against a patio chair and slipped to a wooden deck floor. It fell about 20 " to the deck snapped like a tree limb in a hurricane. No repair was possible. All I could think of was that my husband could have been using this on stairs and it could have broken. It was somewhat attractive but please look for something safer.
Question: What are the dimensions of the blade
Answer: 3/4”
Question: How heavy is this knife? Does it easy carry
Answer: No this cane is made in India.
Question: Is the blade of this folding knife stabilize
Answer: On a coloring book or another somewhat sturdy surface on top of the table it should be fine. There are straps on the sides to pull it nice & tight. I love this thing!

Crag J1904 Black PVD AR-RPM9

The Crag is a substantial cleaver style knife that can tackle even the hardest tasks with ease. Featuring a 3.43” long blade that is over an inch wide, the crag can power through bigger cuts with ease while still being acute enough for delicate work. The 4.72” handle provides a substantial grip while still being light and maneuverable in hand.

AR-RPM9 Powder Steel

The Crag’s blade is constructed from our proprietary AR-RPM9 steel that perfectly blends edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening. This is the ideal option for an every day carry knife that will stay strong through all of your adventures.

Cutting Profile

A cleaver style blade is a perfect choice for those who tend to do larger cutting tasks on a regular basis, the wide profile allows the blade to glide through material much more easily and with substantially more control than a thinner knife. The squared off tip increases the overall durability of the knife while still allowing it to deal with finer tasks.

Blade

We were very careful in our consideration of the blade thickness of the Crag, we wanted to make sure that the blade could be heavily used while also not being so thick that it would bind up on material or get stuck. The perfect mid-point ended up being 0.13”, just thick enough for big tasks but still thin enough behind the edge to be an effective slicer.

Handle Material

Carbon Fiber adds just a touch of class to this otherwise beefy blade. We use a Carbon Fiber laminate that is smooth to the touch and extremely durable and resistant to moisture and temperature changes. The smooth finish is exceptionally comfortable in the hand and helps to elevate this knife to something with just a little bit more swagger.

Features

In order to ensure smooth and fast operation we’ve outfitted the Crag with a ceramic ball-bearing pivot construction which allows for quick and snappy one-handed flipper deployment and smooth closing action. A ceramic detente ensures that this knife will maintain crisp, snappy action for a lifetime of use.

Clip

The Crag features a blacked-out deep-carry clip that sinks all the way into the pocket ensuring that your knife won’t get caught on any wayward surfaces. We’ve also included a large lanyard hole that is compatible with 550 paracord or leather cordage for those who prefer to carry their knives using a lanyard.
