These tools are related to rebar cutters, benders, cutters, hand tools, power hand tools, and are a crucial part of the toolbox for professionals and hobbyists alike. Here's what you need to know about wire strippers:
Purpose: Wire strippers are designed to remove the insulation or outer covering from electrical wires and cables. This process is necessary when splicing or connecting wires, as it exposes the conductive metal inside.
Types: There are several types of wire strippers available, including manual, automatic, and self-adjusting models. Manual wire strippers require the user to adjust the cutting blades to the appropriate wire size, while automatic and self-adjusting strippers automatically adjust to the wire's diameter.
Components: Wire strippers typically consist of a pair of handles and a set of jaws or cutting blades. The jaws are designed to grip the wire's insulation, while the blades cut through it.
Wire Gauge: Wire strippers are available in various sizes to accommodate different wire gauges. It's important to choose the right size stripper for the specific wire you're working with to ensure a clean and precise strip.
Safety: When using wire strippers, safety is paramount. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and gloves, to protect against potential wire fragments or sharp edges.
Versatility: Some wire strippers come with additional features, such as built-in crimping or cutting capabilities. This makes them versatile tools for a wide range of tasks, including electrical work and cable assembly.
Wire Types: Wire strippers can be used on various types of wires, including solid-core and stranded wires. Different strippers may be more suitable for specific wire types, so it's important to choose the right tool for the job.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of wire strippers is essential to ensure their continued functionality. This may include cleaning the blades and adjusting or replacing worn parts.
Usage: Wire strippers are commonly used in electrical installations, wiring projects, and repairs. They are also employed in industries such as automotive repair, telecommunications, and electronics.
Quality Matters: Investing in high-quality wire strippers can make a significant difference in ease of use and precision. Quality tools are more durable and tend to provide better results.
In summary, wire strippers are indispensable tools in the fields of construction, electrical work, and general DIY projects. They come in various types and sizes to accommodate different wire gauges and are designed to safely and efficiently remove insulation from wires and cables. When used correctly, wire strippers contribute to the overall safety and reliability of electrical systems and connections.

User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone uses it for jewlery making? How is it? Thanks |
Answer: | I've never used it for jewelry but it cuts wire very crisply and the nose has a flat crimper that would close small metal parts easily. |
Question: | does it cut guitar strings ? how about bike break cable |
Answer: | As a bike mechanic, I would highly recommend getting a tool specficially for cable cutting. It's a curved blade that won't fray the stands. I expect steel cables will dull this blade quickly. |
Question: | How can you tell which crimp area to use? The color codes on the tool show 2 "ranges" of wire gauge, but it looks like there are 3 crimp areas |
Answer: | On the left there is a label ("INSUL AND NON-INSUL") that points the center of the two places to crimp, with the one closest to the pivot color coded for blue and yellow connectors (or 16 - 10 gauge), and the next crimp area for red connectors (or 22 - 18 gauge). The bump on the right side between the two is not meant for crimping. |
Question: | Where are these made |
Answer: | Thank you for contacting Irwin Tools. The country of origin for this self adjusting wire stripper is Taiwan. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this truly strip all kinds of wires, like breadboard jumper wires |
Answer: | Definitely: breadboard jumper wires are my primary use. |
Question: | How well do these strip 12 gauge romex (individual conductors, of course)? That would be main use for these; already have simple strippers |
Answer: | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4XrsWv6enw&list=PLqVZGHwrUlvGV22O6vEEfTmhLLsNBVbRI&index=2#t=142.377521If you watch this Youtube video you see a man announce, at 50 seconds in, how he is replacing 12 gauge wire with 10 gauge. This fellow then easily strips 10 gauge wire at about 2:00 minutes withthis very vice grip tool. He makes it look so easy. It is not a commercial just a guy rewiring his portable solar panel.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4XrsWv6enw&list=PLqVZGHwrUlvGV22O6vEEfTmhLLsNBVbRI&index=2#t=142.377521 |
Question: | Will this work for speaker wire |
Answer: | I haven't had any luck with it on Genesis Speaker wires in 16 and 14 gauge. Cat 5e and Cat6 STP and UTP it does well stripping the jacket but watch for nicks on UTP and peal back. |
Question: | Does it have blade height adjustment? I could not get it to strip a 12 gauge wire |
Answer: | It is supposed to auto adjust for most heights and do 10-24 AWG wires. There is a micro adjust that can be adjusted so the grab side doesn't dig into the wire. My first pair wouldn't strip anything regardless of gauge, and the new pair strips intermittently. When it does strip it causes more damage to the insulation exposing wire in front of the strip point, despite the micro adjustment. I am giving them a week in the field and testing on various wires and will hopefully have some sample video and photos.Perhaps I will figure out how they can be used without these problems if not they will also be returned. |

User questions & answers
Question: | These are rated for 10-22 gauge but can they strip 8 gauge |
Answer: | I have some 8 gauge 133/29 tinned Marine copper wire with a PVC jacket. The 8 GA. marine wire with PVC jacket didn't slip right in from the side needed to be pushed in from the front. The first strip was fairly bad, wire was uneven and developed bird cages. However the second strip went much better and the stranded wire was straight. However were the stripper cut into the PVC insulation on both side of the wire the cut wasn't straight 90 degrees, the insulation was cut a wedge shape on both sides of the wire. so there's a gap approx. 1/8" that wedge shape from the wire to the full diameter of the insulation. Though it may work to install a connector it's not considered in the trade to be a viable strip. The stripper needs to cut the insulation at 90 degrees from the wire so a when installing a connector there no gap between the insulation and connector terminal. So I would have to answer NO it won't, at least on some 8 gauge wire and insulation. The wire I tried stripping is 8 AWG AWM style 1029 or AWM style 1231 E73051 105C 600 volts VW-1 CSA TEW AWM T A/6 1050 600 VOLT FT1 LL45926 Sold as 8ga Stranded Tinned Copper (133/29) UL1028, TEW, PVC Primary Wire TEW stands for Thermoplastic Equipment Wire |

User questions & answers
Question: | will this arrive in retail packaging, any warranty offered |
Answer: | Well not a warranty but it does say if it comes in damage will to return for a replacement but good packaging very high quality for the price still have mine working just as good as the day i got it |
Question: | What's the difference between these and the "New Version |
Answer: | What new version are you referring to? If you are talking about the CP-302G that tool covers a different size range. This one is for 30 - 20 AWG and the CP-302G is for 20 - 10 AWG. |
Question: | Are these any good for stripping small stranded wires |
Answer: | I'm not really sure...I used this stripper for a single job installing overhead fluorescent lights. The wires were pretty small, but I'm not sure what the gauge was. |
Question: | Will these work on small communication wire |
Answer: | Yes, as long as the AWG is between 20 and 30. Most communication wire is AWG 24, 26, so it would work. But, it is up to you to know the AWG of the wire you are using. If you use a hole that is too small in the stripper, you could nick the conductor and that would not be good. It's critical the proper AWG hole is used for the AWG wire. |
Question: | what is the average length of this tool |
Answer: | In order to obtain an average, I would have to buy, say, ten of them, measure each one, add all their lengths together, and then divide by ten, which should give me approx. 6¼ inches, as stated by the seller. |

Question: | Does it have a locking mechanism so it doesn't stay wide open |
Answer: | Unfortunately it doesn't have one. This is one of the reasons why I lost the spring. |
Question: | What are the exact dimensions of these strippers? I'm looking for something compact enough to fit into a small toolkit case |
Answer: | The wire cutter is 6" long, the width of the grip is about 3 5/8" not depressed, and at the tip is about 1 3/16" not depressed. The thickest section across the length is 5/8" in the grip area. These measurements are by sight with a ruler. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with heavy duty wires/cords |
Answer: | Dear friend, Thank you for your support. As for the problem you said, the range of products used by the line between 10-24AWG. Have a nice day! Thank you ! |
Question: | Can this strip and crimp coaxle cable |
Answer: | Yes, it will strip coax cable. I stripped a piece of RJ-6. The outer jacket was removed leaving the wire mesh shield in place. I then pushed the mesh shield down and stripped the inner layer exposing the copper core. Worked like a charm. However, I don't recommend crimping coax cable with this tool. The crimper on this tool is designed for crimping electrical connectors. Suggest you invest in a coax crimp tool. |
Question: | Are these heavy or fairly light |
Answer: | They are not too heavy as to drag you down while you are working. However, these are sturdy wire strippers. They are not so light as to feel cheap. They are just right. |
Question: | What is the brass tuning screw for on the wire stripper |
Answer: | It's supposed to be for adjusting the stripping strength so you don't damage the wire when you strip it. I wouldn't recommend these strippers to anyone. They broke the second time I tried to strip a wire. Spend a little more and buy a brand name. Otherwise, you may be having to order a new one quicker than expected. |
