12 best high temp engine paint colors
High-temperature engine paint, also known as high-heat engine paint, is a specialized type of spray paint designed to withstand the extreme temperatures generated by automotive engines and other high-heat surfaces. These paints are commonly used to protect and enhance the appearance of engine components and exhaust systems. Here's what you should know about high-temperature engine paint colors:
Temperature Resistance: High-temperature engine paint is formulated to withstand the high temperatures produced by engines, typically ranging from 500°F (260°C) to 2000°F (1093°C), depending on the specific product. This resistance is essential to prevent the paint from blistering, peeling, or fading under extreme heat.
Applications: High-temp engine paint is commonly used on various engine components, including exhaust manifolds, headers, engine blocks, brake calipers, and other metal parts that get hot during operation.
Color Options: High-temperature engine paints come in a range of colors to suit different preferences and customization needs. Some popular color options include:
Black: Black is a classic choice for engine components and gives a clean and stealthy appearance.
Silver: Silver or aluminum-colored paint is often used to mimic the look of raw metal or aluminum parts.
Red: Red high-temp paint is a popular choice for brake calipers and can add a sporty look to the vehicle.
Blue: Blue engine paint can be used for a distinctive appearance and is a favorite among enthusiasts.
Primer: To ensure good adhesion and durability, it's recommended to use a high-temperature primer specifically designed for use with engine paints before applying the topcoat.
Preparation: Proper surface preparation is crucial for a successful paint job. This includes cleaning the surface, removing rust or old paint, and ensuring it is free of grease and contaminants.
Application: Engine paint is typically applied in thin, even coats using a spray can or paint gun. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for recommended drying times between coats.
Curing: After painting, the engine components should be cured according to the paint manufacturer's guidelines. This often involves baking the parts in an oven or allowing them to air-dry for a specified period.
Durability: High-temperature engine paints are designed to provide long-lasting protection against heat and corrosion. Properly applied and cured paint can withstand the rigors of engine operation.
Customization: Some enthusiasts use high-temp engine paint not only for protection but also for customization and aesthetics. By choosing different colors and finishes, they can create a unique look for their vehicles.
In summary, high-temperature engine paint colors are specifically formulated to withstand the extreme heat generated by engines and other high-temperature surfaces. They come in a variety of colors, allowing vehicle owners and enthusiasts to protect their engine components while customizing their vehicle's appearance. Proper surface preparation and application techniques are essential to achieve a durable and attractive finish.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this on a wood burning fireplace firebox |
Answer: | Yes especially if it is an alloy box but if the box is made of wood you might want to seal and prime it with the high temperature primer first and make sure that there are no cracks before you go over it with the rust oleum high temp paint, for best results! |
Question: | Can I use this paint to spray the outside of a wood burning stove |
Answer: | I bought 6 cabs and did my gas grill inside and out. After it cured, I ran it for 30 minutes without food. I have a "holder" to grill fish so I am using that for all cooking so I and not cooking directly on the painted area. If after a month it holds up, I will do test cooking on it directly for the stray cats. |
Question: | Paint scratches off very easily 2 days later, even after curing at 200 and 400 degrees. Prepped with degreaser and 150 grit sandpaper. What could I have done wrong |
Answer: | You did not do anything wrong. This particular paint is not durable at all, but it withstands very very high temps. If you need high heat AND durability, then you need to look into some of the high heat Cerakote and Duracoat products, which are much more involved in applying than this is. I just answered another question on here, and in that answer I mentioned watching YouTube vids of ppl using this paint. In this vids, you'll see they are very delicate w the painted objects after cured when re-installing the object in a car engine compartment, for example. The ONLY thing this paint is good at is withstanding very high heat and being applied relatively easily and cheaply. Ps. I guess I should mention that this product is sometimes sold as an "enamel" but this particular paint is not truly what you'd call an enamel. Enamel implies high durability, and this does not have high durability. |
Question: | What temperatures are required to cure the paint multiple times at various temperatures in an oven? Will the final coating survive any contact with food |
Answer: | 24 hours AFTER painted - place in oven one hour @ 175 degrees. A second curing a few hours later is sometimes helpful.Any contact with food in either direction is bad. (part to food / food to part)Make sure wife is out of town.Cook 2 or 3 pizzas one after another to help disguise smell. |

Question: | Do I also need to get the gloss clear one if I'm using it to paint brake calipers or just this paint is enough |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on gym equipment? Looking to paint my squat rack neon green. Thx |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Has anyone had luck with the VHT clear coat enamel? Does it last and resist chemicals |
Answer: | Hey Josh, Pretty much like any other Clear Coat. It does work. Should re spray a couple of coats. It will last for awhile, depending how it's used!! Hope this helps! {wolfman} |
Question: | can i use this on my brake calipers |
Answer: | Yes. I've used it on my brake calipers and it works great. Depending on how much you drive you may have to touch it up to keep it bright every so often but that's going to happen regardless of what paint you use because brake dust, etc. I use this because its high temperature. |
Question: | Is it OK to use a gray primer and then use a hot pink paint over top of the gray |
Answer: | Primer of any kind will be good for a nice finish for whatever you are painting. I recommend 3 light coats of primer lightly sanded in between. When getting ready to apply you engine paint, beware, this is thick paint. It has heavy particulate matter which is the paint. I recommend that you turn the paint can upside down for 3 to 4 hours. This paint settles heavily. After several hours upside down, shake violently to get it mixed well. After that don't spray too close to your target surface. Do not spray at any temp less than 72 degrees fahrenheit, and spray evenly side to side about 5 to 6 inches, from surface. |

Question: | Please for the love of God state the exact name of the paint. Ford red is different from Chrysler red etc |

Question: | Will this adhere to chrome motorcycle exhaust pipes |
Answer: | No! will not stick to chrome..best bet is a Jet Hot Coating from a powder coater.. This stuff does not hold up well under high heat conditions, will flake off at the hot bends of pipes |
Question: | For inside tubing on exaust manifold, is primer application sufficient for protection without , color, VHT paint coatings |
Answer: | I think it is. I have used this primer ONLY on the exhaust of one of our cars. Curing is tricky. Have to follow istructions on the primer can. |
Question: | Can I use this on a firepit to prevent rust |
Answer: | Yes but any paint will do that as long as you clean the rust off . All your doing is keeping the water and air from getting to the raw metal . The high tempPaint has to be bake in an oven to 600*F |
Question: | can this be used for arts and crafts to and not just cars |
Answer: | I don't see why you couldn't use this for other applications but if your not going to be heating your crafts to over 1000* why would you need a high heat clear coat. |

Question: | can I use it to paint my kitchen stove or what product would you recommend |
Answer: | that's why i purchased it, no other product lasted on my electric stove top. this product has not discolored since i put it on about 3 months ago. all other stove top paints did not work,, glad to help |
Question: | Could i spray this directly on the grill burners (not the holes of course) and the brackets that hold the burners to the fire box |
Answer: | My guess would be no, it's for high heat but probably not that high. I just spray the outside and legs after winter. It does a great job of covering the rust on my cheapo Walmart BBQ. Makes it look brand new every spring, this is my third season using it. |
Question: | Do you think I could spray my oven racks with this? Would it scratch off at the bottom |
Answer: | I used this for the exterior of my BBQ grill not the metal racks but the enclosure/ exterior body. I personally would not spray this on my oven racks for safety reasons. |
Question: | no lead |
Answer: | Here is a list of the contents; lead is not one of them: Acetone, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Xylene, Ethylbenzene, Iron Manganese Oxide, Magnesium Silicate, Copper Chromite Black, Solvent Naptha, Light Aromatic, 1,2,4 Trimethylbenzene, and Carbon Black |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the finish? Flat, glossy |
Answer: | Flat finish has a pale color, glossy has a shine to color. |
Question: | is this good to paint my heater metal cover, its pealing |
Answer: | Yes , after you remove the pealing paint, spray on. |
Question: | Can I spray on the interior of an old charcoal grill that I'm trying to fix up |
Answer: | I needed to do the same with my old grill. Inside the top the old paint was flakening off. After scraping I sprayed on with the Krylon. The problem was that additional flakening continued to occur and hence more flaks falling on the food. Maybe if you took the grill top off and sanded it completely then all would be okay in using the Krylon. |
Question: | COLOR |
Answer: | It's a flat black. I used it on my fireplace insert and it dried looking like cast iron. Very nice. |

User questions & answers
Question: | For prepping a fire pit do you apply to the outside only or interior, log grate, etc |
Answer: | I applied to the outside and inside but not the mesh cover or the log grate. |
Question: | can this be used on kitchen appliances? (fridge, stove, dishwasher |
Answer: | I'm sure it can be used on stove because by it's an high heat be tolerance spray |
Question: | Would you use this on a new fire pit to help it last or only once a fire pit starts to deteriorate |
Answer: | You could use it either way. before deterioration might be best, in my opinion. I don't know if that paint layer would peel quicker, though.Good luck! |
Question: | Can this be used on the inside lid of my grill which has become very rusted (after sanding of course |
Answer: | I would NEVER put paint n the inside of a grill. I have been grilling and smoking eat for 35 years. For the outside it's OK but never paint the inside. Get a round wire brush for your drill and brush it clean. Coat the inside of your grill with Canola oil. Oil and season it by cranking up the heat with no food. Let it get to a very high temp for at least 45 minutes to an hour for a proper seasoning. Then you will be ready to cook. Cleaning of the hood is not really required of a smoker or grill. Best of luck. Smoke rolling here today. 6 racks of baby backs, 2 pork buttts and 20 chicken quarters. I love it. |
