13 best stain for woods

Wood stains are products used in woodworking and home improvement to enhance the appearance of wood surfaces while providing protection and preserving the natural beauty of the wood. Here's what you need to know about wood stains:

  1. Types of Wood Stains: There are two primary types of wood stains:

    • Penetrating Stains: These stains are designed to soak into the wood fibers, enhancing the natural grain and color of the wood. They provide a more natural and transparent finish.

    • Gel Stains: Gel stains have a thicker consistency compared to penetrating stains, allowing for more controlled application and the ability to create uniform finishes. They work well for achieving specific color tones.

  2. Color Options: Wood stains come in a wide range of colors, from light shades to dark hues. You can choose a stain that matches or complements your desired wood finish.

  3. Transparency: Stains can vary in transparency, from clear or semi-transparent to opaque. Transparent stains allow the wood grain to show through, while opaque stains provide more solid coverage.

  4. Wood Compatibility: It's essential to select a wood stain that is compatible with the type of wood you are working with. Some stains are formulated for specific wood types, while others are more versatile.

  5. Preparation: Proper preparation of the wood surface is crucial for achieving an even and consistent stain finish. This may involve sanding, cleaning, and applying a wood conditioner to prevent uneven absorption of the stain.

  6. Application Methods: Wood stains can be applied using brushes, rags, or foam applicators. The chosen method can impact the final appearance, so it's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

  7. Drying Time: Stains typically require some drying time before applying a topcoat or finish. This time varies depending on the product, so it's essential to follow the instructions on the stain's label.

  8. Topcoats: After staining, it's common to apply a clear topcoat, such as varnish, polyurethane, or lacquer, to protect the stained wood surface and give it a polished appearance.

  9. Indoor and Outdoor Use: Some wood stains are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, while others are designed specifically for one environment. Outdoor stains often include additional UV protection to prevent fading.

  10. Safety: When working with wood stains, it's important to follow safety precautions. Proper ventilation, wearing protective gear such as gloves and eye protection, and disposing of used materials according to local regulations are essential practices.

  11. Cleanup: Stains are typically oil-based or water-based. Cleaning tools and brushes used for oil-based stains may require mineral spirits, while those used for water-based stains can be cleaned with water and soap.

Wood stains are versatile products that can transform the appearance of wood surfaces, whether you're staining furniture, cabinetry, floors, or other wooden items. By selecting the right stain type, color, and application method, you can achieve the desired aesthetic and protective finish for your woodworking projects.

User questions & answers

Question: How many
Answer: Yes, it is the Honey Teak, 1 gallon. Ordered two of them from them last August.
Question: Do i have you to use a sealer after to prevent water damage
Answer: Yes, this item is the 1 Quart of Mahogany Flame Australian Timber Oil For Decks & Outdoor Furniture.
Question: Do these have a strong odor
Answer: My house is part of a condo association and they applied this product to my deck a few years ago and I couldn't walk on it for six weeks. I finally had the entire deck sanded and Australian Timber Oil applied again by an independent contractor which came out beautifully and was trouble free. I have since applied it myself several times and have never had a problem. It sounds to me that it is not being wiped soon enough after it is applied which will create problems. I like the product and plan to continue using it.
Question: My dog chewed the leg of my mahogany dining chair. Do the wipes work well with elmer's stainable wood putty? It's a small chew but enough to annoy me
Answer: I used the oil version and was very satisfied with the results. I have heard of less favorable results with the water based but have not tried it myself

User questions & answers

Question: I bought the wrong color gel stain it's too dark on my side table. Can I use a lighter color gel stain over the dark gel stain
Answer: I'm really not sure how that woul.d turn out. I think you will have to sand it down again and start over
Question: is this for interior and exterior staining and spar urethane finish
Answer: We use it mainly on stuff inside the house, but have used it on things outside but after staining and its dry we use a water proof sealer.
Question: Do you need to sand before applying gel stain
Answer: Interesting replies about sanding. You aren't sanding to "smooth" the surface, you are sanding to rough it up so the gel stain adheres better. Gel stain isn't like a regular stain that soaks into the wood, it's more like a paint. A light sanding is all you need.
Question: I have a water based primered wood ,can stain over it
Answer: the main thing is the grain. this gel stain inhances grain when staining un painted... if your primered wood has grain it should enhance... great stuff. I stained a 2 inch space board over wood floors and matched it perfectly

Answer: I haven't tried but other reviews indicate the fast drying formula is already thinned out
Question: Looking to paint hollow doors- Do I need a wood conditioner first? Or will this cover well in 1 coat
Answer: This is not a paint, but rather a stain. If you're looking to cover up defects or anything along those lines this will not work. Yes, it will alter the color of the wood with one use though.
Question: Is this considered a gel stain or regular stain
Answer: It's not a gel stain but the consistency is thicker than a regular stain.
Question: Should this be applied with a brush or cloth
Answer: We used a brush to apply and a cloth to rub it in/off after a few minutes. It's very easy to work with.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you laquor over this stain
Answer: Yes, comes out very nice
Question: Is this a dark turquoise paint? Can it be used in a paint spraye
Answer: The first layer goes on light, but as you add a second and third coat is is deep and GORGEOUS! I used it on my wood floors in the kitchen! I wouldn't recommend spraying, because that would cause a lot of air bubbles- stick with a stain sponge and you will be done in no time!
Question: What about water based stain on kitchen cabinets, will cooking on stove damage or lessen colour? Especially because of boiling water and splatters
Answer: I haven't used it in a wet area, but I would say it would all depend on the poly coat and not the stain in this case. I haven't had any issues with it under poly thus far.
Question: Has anyone used the color "whitewashed"? How did it turn out? Is the color able to stay? I heard lighter color is a bit harder for wood to absorb
Answer: I used it on my old hollow core dark doors and I LOVE the results. I just sanded before applying, used a paint sponge to paint it on, and then wiped it off with a cloth. The doors now look like a gorgeous sun lightened wood...couldn't be happier. Don't wipe too vigorously...just gently, and if too much comes off the first time you can always reapply.

Question: how long it takes to dry
Answer: I have no idea on how quick it will dry. I always give a wood finish at least 24 hours to dry. Nothing worse that putting another coat of finish over a first/previous finish that is NOT dry. With a 24 hour dry time, I know the finish is DRY and ready to be over coated.
Question: How many sq ft does 1 quart cover
Answer: I was using rough cut freshly sanded hemlock and it soaked it up pretty good. I quart got for me through about 7-8 10ft X 6” boards

User questions & answers

Question: How much product do you typically use for let's say a large outdoor dining table? I'm oiling my outdoor furniture for the first time. Thanks
Answer: I am in the process of redoing a 5 piece dinning set. It's 4 chairs and a table. I ran out of both the oil and the cleaner/brightener. If yours is as large as mine I recommend using the 32oz or even larger. Could even get the gallon size for the oil if you need more than one coat like my set does.
Question: Is this safe to use on an outdoor patio set made from Acacia wood, or does it have chemicals that will destroy the quality of the wood
Answer: Star brite Teak Oil is ideal for acacia wood.
Question: What's the differnce between this brand and the wadco brand for half the price
Answer: I used both Watco and Star Brite on a set of 4 hairs teak chairs that were very weathered. I cleaned them all with the Star Brite clieaner first, which did a great job. My goal with the teak oil was to replace the natural oil that had leached out over the years. Without that oil, the wood absorbed rain water and was starting to split from the wet dry cycles. The Star Brit is thinner and really soaked in. 1 quart gave me 2 coats on one chair and a start on a second chair. My wife then got the Watco, so I used it on the rest of the chairs. Its much thicker and doesn't soak in nearly as much. One quart id 3 chairs. It colors the wood a lot more, which I didn't want. I wish I had used only Star Brite. It does a better job of penetrating deeply into the wood and truly reconditioning it. The Watco is more of a surface finish, giving quick, superficially pretty results. I don't think its nearly as good for rejuvenating severely weathered, dried wood. May it'g work best for preserving newer teak, but I wouldn't recommend it on old teak.
Question: One of the comments mentioned the color "brown" Is this mostly clear or does the darken the wood too much? I will uses this on raw wood
Answer: The oil has a brown color and since I put it on dark brown wood bench, I couldn't tell if coloring was a factor. I don't think it would change raw wood that much, unless it was a really light wood. Oil does soak in and that might make a slight difference.

Product features

Question: Is this the price for one can
Answer: Yes. Only one can came to me when I ordered.
Question: Can this be applied over fading exterior latex stain? Thank you
Answer: I applied it over NEW lattice for a garden trellis- sorry, but I do not know about latex-you might give it a try as long as the old will not peel off. Hope this helps. ^__^
Question: Dose this need a clear finish on top to pertect the stain
Answer: I used the stain to stain my mailbox post. Didn't use a clear finish over it. I liked the matte finish look. It held up in the weather just fine.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this product cover a chip on a snow white desk
Answer: Yes but you might want to use the thicker marker more like a crayon vs the marker one
Question: If using on wood floor to correct small marks, can you polyurethane over the Crayon/Markers
Answer: I don’t see why not, that is if you using the marker, the poly would keep it from rubbing off
Question: Are these waterproof? Can they be used for bathroom cabinets? What happens if water often drips down on them
Answer: Sorry, my needs have not included "waterproof", however the quality of the colors/coverage is an excellent match. As I check the package I see no qualifiers for this. Here is the manufacturer's Q/A email address for your convenience: [email protected]. Good Luck.
Question: Does this work on brown laminate floors
Answer: While I don't have direct experience with this brand I have used many other brands of the exact same products. People like that Fred guy calling things glorified pens and crayons shouldn't be listened to. He clearly couldn't be bothered to do any research and learn how to use the products and to get good results you need to put in effort and learn the general idea of how to use them. It's not just rub wax in the scratch and color over with a marker. With that said there is a chance these will work on your floor and look great but I don't know what type of "markers" are in this package. If it has the resin markers they do have a decent shine and depending on the damage you are looking to cover up it could be enough to make the damage not noticeable. Personally I would recommend looking for a stronger filler and "paint" system since you are working on a floor. These marker and wax kits are nothing more than a temporary cover up. In my younger years I worked for a furniture company and we used things like this as well as other things to cover and damage that may have come factory on the furniture or damage caused by us. The idea of stuff like this is to make it look new and last a a couple wipe downs after the customer gets it home so the customer thinks they caused the scratches after a week when they wiped all the soft painted wax away thanks to cleaning. A few good scratches could turn a 1998 $1400 couch in to a $600 couch. I spent a lot of hours a day with a fine paint brush painting wood grain with a fine brush over wax filled cracks and scratches to keep all the furniture looking perfect. Never have we had a customer think the scratches came new when they bought something but twice I remember customers coming back some time later to buy something else and they both made a comment about how easily their expensive furniture got scratched. I don't think it is the right thing to do but I was young and it was my job. This stuff just doesn't last and is not good for a surface that is being walked on. A resin marker is fine but for a floor you need a more solid a permanent filler.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you mix this with a clear oil based polyurethane
Answer: Soap and water and let dry for 24 hers or wood cleaner
Question: Can this be used for concrete staining
Answer: Strictly speaking, it is not necessary. However, Red Oak has grain that (depending on the board) can present some difficulties with even-ness of staining. Using this pre-Stain prevents those issues from occurring and, in my opnion the extra time is well worth it.
Question: It states that it is water-based. Does this mean it will rub off or drip off in the event the material makes contact with water
Answer: I would, it will help prevent blotchy areas. Soaks right in, I have had good luck with it.
Question: Can more than one coat of stain be applied
Answer: I used this on cherry when applying a black cherry stain. In general, pre-stain makes the actual stain lighter. With the black cherry stain and no pre-stain it made the wood appear too dark and very purple. When applying the pre-stain It worked perfectly for what I was trying to achieve. I was able to match an antique dark cherry dresser almost perfectly. Always test with a scrap piece with and without the pre-stain but it works on all wood types.
