12 best solid color deck stains

Solid color deck stains are a type of finish used to protect and enhance the appearance of wooden decks. They fall under the category of stains, finishes, and sealers in the realm of paint and wall treatments supplies. Here's what you should know about them:

  1. Appearance and Coverage:

    • Solid color deck stains provide a consistent, opaque finish that completely covers the natural grain and texture of the wood. They are similar to paint in this regard.
    • They are available in a wide range of colors, allowing homeowners to choose a shade that complements their home's exterior.
  2. Protection:

    • These stains offer excellent protection against weathering elements like UV rays, moisture, and mildew. They form a protective barrier on the surface of the wood, helping to prevent rot and decay.
  3. Application:

    • Solid color deck stains are typically thicker than semi-transparent or transparent stains. They require careful application to ensure an even finish.
    • It's important to properly prepare the surface by cleaning and possibly sanding the wood before applying the stain.
  4. Suitable Wood Types:

    • They are suitable for both softwoods (like pine, cedar) and hardwoods (like oak, mahogany), as well as pressure-treated lumber.
  5. Longevity:

    • Depending on factors like climate, exposure to sunlight, and foot traffic, a solid color deck stain can last anywhere from 3 to 8 years before requiring reapplication.
  6. Maintenance:

    • Maintenance typically involves regular cleaning and inspection for any signs of wear or damage. If the stain starts to fade or peel, it may need to be recoated.
  7. Environmental Considerations:

    • Some solid color deck stains are water-based, which tend to be more environmentally friendly compared to oil-based alternatives. They have lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are easier to clean up.
  8. Precautions:

    • It's important to follow manufacturer instructions regarding application, safety, and disposal of any stains, finishes, or sealers.
  9. Compatibility:

    • Before applying a solid color deck stain, it's important to ensure it's compatible with any previous coatings on the wood. In some cases, you may need to strip old finishes before applying a new stain.
  10. Brand and Quality:

    • Different brands may offer varying levels of quality and durability. It's advisable to choose a reputable brand known for producing reliable and long-lasting products.

Remember that while solid color deck stains can offer excellent protection and aesthetic appeal, choosing the right product and applying it correctly is crucial for the best results. Always consult the manufacturer's recommendations for specific usage instructions.

User questions & answers

Question: How much does 1 gallon cover
Answer: About 1/4 of an 8x12 shed. I used 4 gallons for the whole shed
Question: Will this work with a paint gun
Answer: Yes, this product works well with an airless sprayer
Question: Is there any texture to this solid stain? Does it last without peeling for a couple years
Answer: There is no texture, just a smooth paint that took the texture of what we painted it on. No idea on the peel, only just used in the last couple weeks.
Question: How much do I need for a 24’ x 18’ deck
Answer: This is a water based product and as such gets a better coverage area. The product should yield approximately 600 SF. However, when staining a deck, you'll not meet that coverage area if you use an airless paint sprayer. Typically the average would be 450 - 475 SF. If you roll it, you should expect to get between 500 - 525 SF.

Product features

Stain + Sealant in One

Stain + Sealant in One protects and beautifies in one step.

Weather-Ready Application

Allows greater opportunities for staining when it may rain or when the weather may be too hot or cold.

Enhanced waterproofing protection

Helps make sure your wood is protected from cracking due to water.

Advanced SunBlock UV

Helps protects your wood from dangerous UV rays that can wear down the coating.

How much stain do you need to buy?

One gallon of wood stain covers approximately 250-350 square feed, which is enough for a small to medium deck. It should also cover both sides of a 25 foot long fence or a couple pieces of furniture.

Two Gallons

Two gallons of wood stain cover approximately 600 square feed, which should be more than enough for the standard deck project or a 50 foot long fence.

Three or more Gallons

Three or more gallons of wood stain will most likely only be needed on large projects, as they should cover over 850 square feed.

Note: Solid Color Stain requires two coats. You should effectively double your gallons purchased when using a solid.

How To Stain Your Wood Deck In 3 Easy Steps

Sweep debris from deck and then use a product such as Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to penetrate the wood and lift dirt to the surface to be cleaned, as well as clean stains caused by mildew, dirt, algae and mold. Allow surface to dry.

STEP 2

Tape off any surfaces you don’t want stained. Also, avoid staining in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces because the stain will dry too fast to penetrate properly.

STEP 3

For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.

For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even. Make sure to treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.

You’re going to want to follow the directions on your stain container to determine if anything needs done after your final application.

User questions & answers

Question: How long does it last
Answer: Consumer Reports says semi-transparent stains last for two years and need to be recoated after two years for best appearance. Maybe longer intervals for wood in the shade.
Question: Is this food safe? I'm using it for cheese boards and charcuterie boards
Answer: No, this product would not be appropriate for rinishing a surface intended for contact with food.
Question: My deck is new pressure treated pine. i live in northern illinois. deck is in direct sun light 6 hours of the day will this product hold up
Answer: I'm in central VA and my deck is in direct sunlight from dawn to dusk. I stained my deck last spring (2017) and I won't be staining it this year. I used a plant sprayer to apply this stain and it went on easy. Just make sure you tape up and cover surrounding areas with plastic because the sprayer gets messy.
Question: Is this compatible with log jam chinking
Answer: We would have gone with this timber oil if they had a darker shade.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

User questions & answers

Question: will this work in paint gun
Answer: yes it will, that's how I applied it.
Question: Will be applying to white cedar fence. How dry does the wood have to be
Answer: I did not heed the "one year" to dry on the new portion of my deck. Did old and new at the same time when the new portion was perhaps 2 months old. There was a definite difference. I washed and brightened both. Also did two coats. The 2nd coat was done while the first coat was still wet as per instructions. Also brushed vs. rolled. The stain seeped into the older wood much better and the color is richer. Don't believe the stain will last for years. In covered areas yes, it does. But my deck area that gets full S.Carolina sun, does not last the year. I re-stained last year and will be doing a layer of water proofing on horizontal surfaces this year in hopes that I won't have to stain again for a while. I am still happy that I bought the water based just because of the clean up and the ease of re-staining even if I feel I had to do it much quicker than if I had used oil based.
Question: Can I use this on my new cream colored bamboo blinds? Unsure about the method they were colored, but almost no sheen. Want stain protection in kitchen
Answer: Hard to say without looking at the wood , but if the wood still looks porous enough we're the Stain can soak in some I would think a light coat possibly 2 would do it. It's very thin milky color but dries clear
Question: I am applying this to a fence. Would you recommend it for fences? Also, if you have used this product how well is it holding up
Answer: Using it for 10 years, great on fences. Apply W weed oil sprayer. Brush W 4" throw away brush as needed. Time between coats varies W the look you want. 2-3 years looks great. At 5 years fading is noticeable. Apply when cool. Dampen surfaces to get soak in.
Question: Can I use this on kitchen cabinets made with walnut veneer? My goal is to keep the natural raw, light look but also see the grain, not milky
Answer: No, don’t use on kitchen cabinets. Instead use water base polyurethane. Easy clean up and is just as good as oil base polyurethane.
Question: Can this be used to seal laminate flooring
Answer: It is not for interior use. Also you cannot stain , paint or varnish over Seal-Once products. Seal-Once must be applied to raw wood.
Question: Can this be used over an oil base stain
Answer: No.
Question: What’s the best product for Douglas fir pergola
Answer: No, this Seal Once product is not made for pergola floors, it has a dull finish. Not shiny. I would think you would want a poly eyrthane, which is durable and has a shine, recommend a semi-gloss. I would suggest you go to Sherwin Williams and consult their opinion.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it take a long time to dry
Answer: We have had a ton of rain so I have not used it yet.
Question: How cold can I apply this to my covered porch?? Thanks rr
Answer: Hello, The application temperature must be between 50-90 F.
Question: Should I wipe down the wet spots after a few days of drying
Answer: Hello, Yes lightly wipe those spots and and make sure those areas are dry before putting into use. note: wet spots could have been caused by a lack of penetration into the wood (a previous stain or sealant could be the culprit), applying to heavy, or the presence of moisture in the wood.
Question: How do you open the plastic seal lid
Answer: Hello, Thanks for your question on this. The plastic lid can be slightly difficult to take off, but is applied to ensure safe transport. To remove, I have found that a paint can opener or flat head screw driver wedged either in the top or on the side on the can works pretty easily. Be sure not to use a hammer to try and wedge the flat head screw driver in, as you want to avoid damaging the metal can.

User questions & answers

Question: In the reviews, everyone mentions the light oak color but I don’t see it available. Is it discontinued or renamed
Answer: I bought 2 gallons of light oak about a month ago. Look again or call the company.
Question: Can I reapply this over the old coat when I need to
Answer: I'd clean the boards the best you can and let them dry, and then yes, you can reapply it. It says so on the can.
