12 best semi transparent deck stain

Semi-transparent deck stain is a type of wood finish commonly used in outdoor home improvement projects. It is related to stains, finishes, and sealers and is typically found in the "Stains, Paint, Wall Treatments, and Supplies" section of a hardware store or home improvement center. Here's what you need to know about semi-transparent deck stain:

  1. Appearance and Coverage: Semi-transparent deck stain is designed to enhance the natural beauty of wood while providing some level of color and protection. It allows the wood grain and texture to show through, giving your deck a subtle, semi-transparent color. This type of stain is available in a range of hues, from light to dark, to match your aesthetic preferences.

  2. Transparency: As the name suggests, semi-transparent stains are not entirely opaque, meaning you can still see the wood grain beneath the finish. This makes them a popular choice for decks and outdoor wooden surfaces where maintaining a natural look is desired.

  3. Protection: In addition to adding color, semi-transparent deck stain provides protection against UV rays, water, and mildew. It helps prevent the wood from fading, cracking, or rotting due to exposure to the elements.

  4. Application: Semi-transparent stains are typically applied using a brush, roller, or sprayer. It's essential to properly prepare the wood surface by cleaning and sanding it before applying the stain for the best results.

  5. Drying Time: The drying time for semi-transparent deck stain can vary depending on the product and weather conditions. It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying times and recoating intervals.

  6. Reapplication: Over time, the stain may wear off due to weathering and foot traffic. Semi-transparent stains are relatively easy to reapply as needed without the need for extensive stripping or sanding.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and resealing, is essential to prolong the life of the stained surface. Keeping your deck clean and free from debris can help maintain its appearance and protection.

  8. Compatibility: Semi-transparent stains are suitable for use on a variety of exterior wood surfaces, including decks, fences, siding, and outdoor furniture. Make sure to choose a product that is appropriate for your specific application.

  9. Environmental Considerations: Some semi-transparent deck stains are available in environmentally friendly, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) formulations, which are less harmful to the environment and human health.

  10. Brand and Quality: There are various brands and quality levels of semi-transparent deck stains available on the market. Consider factors such as durability, color retention, and warranty when selecting a product.

Semi-transparent deck stain is a popular choice for homeowners looking to protect and beautify their outdoor wooden surfaces while maintaining a natural appearance. It offers a balance between color enhancement and wood grain visibility, making it a versatile option for outdoor wood projects.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

Answer: I bought 2 gallons of light oak about a month ago. Look again or call the company.
Question: Can I reapply this over the old coat when I need to
Answer: I'd clean the boards the best you can and let them dry, and then yes, you can reapply it. It says so on the can.
Question: How many sq ft will 2.5 gallons cover
Answer: depends. cover says 100 - 150 sq ft per gallon. I used 7.5 gallons on about 600sq ft of deck and barely had enough, that was 2 coats. 1st coat sucked up a lot, 2nd coat went a lot farther
Question: How many years on before having to reapply
Answer: I live at 9000 ft. in the mountains- .wind, rain, snow, UV. I try to touch up every 2-3 years.

User questions & answers

Question: The listing says semi-transparent, but the picture says transparent, which version is this
Answer: Semi
Question: Is this a gallon container of the product
Answer: Yes this is a one gallon of Thompson water seal
Question: what clear seal do you recommend to use on 12year old pressure treated planks
Answer: I've used Thompson's water-based semi-transparent stain/sealer 3 times now for my 15 year-old pressure-treated deck and it has always done a great job of covering and protecting the wood. It doesn't really last the 4 years they claim, but still very good. They also make an oil-based clear sealer and I use that on my cedar pergola, also very good stuff but it's hard to work with because it doesn't cleanup with water. As an alternative to the oil-base they have an all-purpose water-based clear sealer for wood and masonry. I would use that on my pergola if it was made of pressure treated wood, but with cedar I really want a penetrating oil. So for your pressure treated deck, I would recommend the water-based clear sealer. Given how well the semi-transparent stain has worked for me, I would expect good results with the clear as well. You will certainly want to clean the wood first if you expect to brighten the gray appearance of aged wood. I spray oxygen bleach on the wood first and then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse before sealing.
Question: Would this product work well on untreated Adirondack furniture
Answer: Yes, I think it would be suitable. I have only used it on my deck however. Good protection in a wet climate. Rub it down well after it dries to keep the color from getting on clothes though if you're using a color stain.

Product features

Stain + Sealant in One

Stain + Sealant in One protects and beautifies in one step.

Weather-Ready Application

Allows greater opportunities for staining when it may rain or when the weather may be too hot or cold.

Enhanced waterproofing protection

Helps make sure your wood is protected from cracking due to water.

Advanced SunBlock UV

Helps protects your wood from dangerous UV rays that can wear down the coating.

How much stain do you need to buy?

One gallon of wood stain covers approximately 250-350 square feed, which is enough for a small to medium deck. It should also cover both sides of a 25 foot long fence or a couple pieces of furniture.

Two Gallons

Two gallons of wood stain cover approximately 600 square feed, which should be more than enough for the standard deck project or a 50 foot long fence.

Three or more Gallons

Three or more gallons of wood stain will most likely only be needed on large projects, as they should cover over 850 square feed.

Note: Solid Color Stain requires two coats. You should effectively double your gallons purchased when using a solid.

How To Stain Your Wood Deck In 3 Easy Steps

Sweep debris from deck and then use a product such as Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to penetrate the wood and lift dirt to the surface to be cleaned, as well as clean stains caused by mildew, dirt, algae and mold. Allow surface to dry.

STEP 2

Tape off any surfaces you don’t want stained. Also, avoid staining in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces because the stain will dry too fast to penetrate properly.

STEP 3

For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.

For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even. Make sure to treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.

You’re going to want to follow the directions on your stain container to determine if anything needs done after your final application.

DEFY Extreme 40 Semi-Transparent Wood Deck Stain - Ultra Low VOC Formula, 1 Gallon - Crystal Clear

DEFY

Based on 10 reviews Check latest price
  • DEFY Extreme 40 Wood Stain is an ultra-low VOC (< 40 g/L) synthetic-resin, semi-transparent wood stain formulated using state-of-the-art nano-technology to create a level of durability that simply has not been available in a wood stain finish in the past. Extreme 40 Wood Stain is the newest member of the DEFY line of wood products and is our most innovative, high-performance product yet.
  • Ultraviolet rays cause wood to turn gray and become susceptible to water penetration and decay. DEFY Extreme 40 Wood Stain effectively protects the wood from the harmful effects of the sun and from graying by using state-of-the-art nano-technology
  • Extreme 40 Wood Stain contains zinc oxide particles that reflect the damaging ultraviolet rays from the sun. When you reduce the size of these zinc particles down to the nano level, they become invisible to the naked eye. These nano-particles are distributed at a rate of over 30 trillion per square inch of surface area to provide protection from the sun, much like sun blockers and sunscreen lotions.
  • This VOC-compliant, semi-transparent stain provides the maximum UV protection available, adding a semi-transparent tint to your wood. Extreme 40 Wood Stain is available in six semi-transparent colors: natural pine, cedar tone, light walnut, redwood, driftwood gray, and butternut. It also comes in a clear finish.
  • This will not only help to prolong the graying, but will also enable you to retain the natural color.

User questions & answers

Question: does the clear finish protects from UV
Answer: Yes, this item is the 1 Quart of Mahogany Flame Australian Timber Oil For Decks & Outdoor Furniture.
Question: Do you need to add a coat of varnish on top of this stain on a cedar fence
Answer: My house is part of a condo association and they applied this product to my deck a few years ago and I couldn't walk on it for six weeks. I finally had the entire deck sanded and Australian Timber Oil applied again by an independent contractor which came out beautifully and was trouble free. I have since applied it myself several times and have never had a problem. It sounds to me that it is not being wiped soon enough after it is applied which will create problems. I like the product and plan to continue using it.
Question: What is the coverage for a gallon on aged cedar decking
Answer: I used the oil version and was very satisfied with the results. I have heard of less favorable results with the water based but have not tried it myself

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use a pump sprayer for application
Answer: I've never applied it that way. Brushing or using a pad is how I've applied it and this color turns out beautiful.
Question: Would this work to finish a picnic table
Answer: It will work fine as long as the lumber is dry and treated lumber is sometimes not very dry. I would put 3-4 coats on it because it soaks in quickly. If it sits in the sun, it will require re painting each year most likely.
Question: How much coverage per gallon
Answer: If the wood is dry particularly if it is in the sun a lot then it takes much more waterseal. I painted a fence and a deck and it took 26 gallons. I would guess the fence is 400 feet total and the deck is 24 x 24 feet. The deck had already received 8 coats of waterseal over an 8 year period and it is covered. It took much more than I expected. In fact, I had guessed it would take about 15 gallons. I must say, however, I was very pleased with the outcome both in color and durability. I will use it again.
Question: How u apply on deck post ? Shake well before using ? How many coat needs ? I used one coat , but seems watery, next day check found not wa proof
Answer: I had mine brushed on..A lot depends on how dried out/cracked open the wood is, as to how far in it will soak. It is watery/thin that does help for it to soak in more. It may require more than one coat.

DEFY 1 Gallon Semi-Transparent Deck Stain for Hardwoods, Cedar Tone

DEFY

Based on 49 reviews Check latest price

Product description

DEFY Deck Stain for Hardwoods is a synthetic, semitransparent wood stain specially formulated for use on smooth cedar, mahogany, redwood, and other dense or difficult to penetrate woods. This V.O.C. compliant, water-based formula penetrates deep into wood fibers providing maximum long-term protection from weather damage and color retention superior to conventional stains. It was specifically designed with smaller resin particles to better penetrate wood, which helps to eliminate surface buildup and peeling. This product also works well on composite woods. DEFY Deck Stain for Hardwoods contains powerful sunscreens that block damaging UV rays. Ultraviolet rays cause wood to turn gray and become susceptible to water penetration and decay. Deck Stain for Hardwoods is made with synthetic resins that do not attract mildew and algae like other natural resin (oil-based) stains do. Additionally, this deck stain is a water repellent that reduces water penetration up to 90%. It can be used on interior or exterior smooth hardwood surfaces including: wood siding, decks, outdoor wood furniture, and other hardwood surfaces. For more porous surfaces such as pressure treated, pine and cedar log siding, or rough sawn lumber, use DEFY Extreme Wood Stain. DEFY Deck Stain for Hardwoods is available in three, semi-transparent colors: Cedar Tone, Light Walnut, and Natural Pine. Periodically, as the surface begins to get dirty or dull, simply wash it down with a mild detergent and water. As the weather begins to wear away at the surface and the color begins to fade, a maintenance coat should be applied. The first step in the maintenance process is to apply a coat of Wood Brightener. This will lighten any minor graying and clean the surface. Allow the surface to dry, then apply a single coat of DEFY Deck Stain for Hardwoods.

  • FORMULATED FOR USE ON HARDWOODS – This environmentally friendly, water based deck stain is formulated with smaller resin particles that absorb easier into hard or oily wood types, including smooth cedar, redwood, mahogany, and other dense, or difficult to penetrate woods. The result is a better penetrating deck stain that lasts longer.
  • WATER-BASED, SEMI-TRANSPARENT FINISH - This environmentally friendly, low VOC deck stain protects wood surfaces from fading, graying and damage caused by UV rays. It allows the wood grain to show through with a beautiful semi-transparent, natural matte finish.
  • EXTREMELY DURABLE, HIGH QUALITY RESINS – DEFY Deck Stain for Hardwoods is made with the highest quality resins available that have better resistance to fading and darkening. The result is a quality wood stain that typically lasts a season or two longer than competitive products.
  • RESISTS FLAKING AND PEELING - Penetrates deep into wood fibers and helps eliminate surface buildup and peeling.
  • EASY TO MAINTAIN – When it’s time to do a maintenance coat, there’s no need to sand or strip the surface again. Simply brighten the wood with DEFY Wood Brightener and apply a single maintenance coat of DEFY Deck Stain for Hardwoods.

User questions & answers

Question: Cedar tone color on Cedar - Is cedar tone "orange"? I like the natural color of cedar, but the deck stain for hardwoods does not come in clear
Answer: If you go to the DEFY website, you can get a free sample to test it out on your wood. The final color will depend a lot on the natural color of your wood. When we used "dark walnut" on a mahogany deck, it turned out brown, but the same stain on our Kumaru fence turned out a more reddish color. So you should test it out first. Hope this helps!
Question: can this stain be mixed to make other colors
Answer: I did not try it, I don't think so. Its the best stain.
Question: Saw some comment saying reapply in one or two year. Does it mean reapply on top of the one year old coat
Answer: Reapply only if water is absorbed into the wood.
Question: Is cedar tone "orange" on the Hardwood-specific stain? I like the natural color of cedar, but it is only available in standard - non-hardwood product
Answer: It's more orange-ish, here's a pic of it applied to a pressure treated deck, and a cedar fence - http://www.defywoodstain.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/defy-extreme-cedartone-deck-stain-finished-deck-fence-1024x61.jpg

It is sold in one gallon containers and covers 100-150 square feet per gallon depending on wood texture and porosity.

Question: will this work in paint gun
Answer: yes it will, that's how I applied it.
Question: Will be applying to white cedar fence. How dry does the wood have to be
Answer: I did not heed the "one year" to dry on the new portion of my deck. Did old and new at the same time when the new portion was perhaps 2 months old. There was a definite difference. I washed and brightened both. Also did two coats. The 2nd coat was done while the first coat was still wet as per instructions. Also brushed vs. rolled. The stain seeped into the older wood much better and the color is richer. Don't believe the stain will last for years. In covered areas yes, it does. But my deck area that gets full S.Carolina sun, does not last the year. I re-stained last year and will be doing a layer of water proofing on horizontal surfaces this year in hopes that I won't have to stain again for a while. I am still happy that I bought the water based just because of the clean up and the ease of re-staining even if I feel I had to do it much quicker than if I had used oil based.
Question: Can I use this on my new cream colored bamboo blinds? Unsure about the method they were colored, but almost no sheen. Want stain protection in kitchen
Answer: Hard to say without looking at the wood , but if the wood still looks porous enough we're the Stain can soak in some I would think a light coat possibly 2 would do it. It's very thin milky color but dries clear
Question: I am applying this to a fence. Would you recommend it for fences? Also, if you have used this product how well is it holding up
Answer: Using it for 10 years, great on fences. Apply W weed oil sprayer. Brush W 4" throw away brush as needed. Time between coats varies W the look you want. 2-3 years looks great. At 5 years fading is noticeable. Apply when cool. Dampen surfaces to get soak in.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a sealer as well as a stain
Answer: Water beads off of it when it rains. I used this on one outdoor chair and an oil based stain on another chair and after three years the water based stain looks so much better. I will never use oil based again. For my decks, I reapply this every five years. I might lightly sand spots that are scratched first, but otherwise it looks great.

User questions & answers

Question: Are you able to still see the wood grain after applying
Answer: Yes, since it's really a stain. I used on a bare wood chair which had never been painted and I used the cedar color on. I also used it on an old rattan chair in a darker color and it turned out perfectly. You can see the grain on both items.
Question: Is this the price for one can
Answer: Yes. Only one can came to me when I ordered.
Question: Can this be applied over fading exterior latex stain? Thank you
Answer: I applied it over NEW lattice for a garden trellis- sorry, but I do not know about latex-you might give it a try as long as the old will not peel off. Hope this helps. ^__^
Question: Dose this need a clear finish on top to pertect the stain
Answer: I used the stain to stain my mailbox post. Didn't use a clear finish over it. I liked the matte finish look. It held up in the weather just fine.
