11 best deck treatments

Deck treatments encompass a range of products and techniques used to maintain, protect, and enhance the appearance of outdoor decks and other wooden structures. They are an essential part of the paint and wall treatments supplies in the realm of home improvement. Here's what you should know about deck treatments:

  1. Purpose: Deck treatments serve several purposes, including protecting the wood from the elements, preventing rot and decay, enhancing the deck's aesthetics, and ensuring the safety of the surface by reducing slipperiness.

  2. Types of Deck Treatments:

    • Deck Stains: These are available in various types, including transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stains. Stains add color and protect the wood from UV rays and moisture.
    • Sealers: Deck sealers are clear or lightly pigmented and create a protective barrier on the wood's surface to shield it from water and UV damage.
    • Water Repellents: These products are designed to repel water and may not change the wood's color. They are effective in preventing water damage.
    • Deck Paint: Unlike stains, deck paint provides a solid, opaque finish and is often used on older or weathered wood surfaces. It offers strong protection but covers the natural grain.
    • Deck Cleaners and Brighteners: These products help clean and refresh the wood before applying other treatments. They remove dirt, mildew, and stains.
    • Deck Restorers: Deck restorers are designed for heavily weathered or damaged wood surfaces. They can fill cracks and bring new life to older decks.
    • Anti-Slip Coatings: For safety, anti-slip coatings can be added to the treatment to reduce slipperiness, making the surface safer, especially in wet conditions.
  3. Choosing the Right Treatment: The choice of deck treatment depends on factors like the type of wood, desired appearance (natural wood or colored), and the level of protection needed. Climate and exposure to the elements also play a role in the selection.

  4. Surface Preparation: Before applying any treatment, it's essential to prepare the deck surface properly. This typically involves cleaning the deck, removing debris, and making any necessary repairs or replacements of damaged wood.

  5. Application: Deck treatments can be applied using brushes, rollers, or sprayers. The application method may vary depending on the product's consistency and the size of the deck.

  6. Drying and Curing: Allow the treatment to dry and cure thoroughly as per the manufacturer's instructions. Proper drying ensures that the treatment adheres well and provides the intended protection.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to extend the life of the deck treatment. Depending on factors like weather conditions and foot traffic, you may need to reapply the treatment every one to three years.

  8. Safety: Consider the safety aspects of the treatment. If you have concerns about slipperiness, opt for treatments with anti-slip properties, especially if the deck is near a pool or in a rainy region.

Deck treatments are crucial for preserving and enhancing the longevity and beauty of your outdoor wooden structures. The right treatment, when applied and maintained correctly, can protect your deck, keep it looking great, and ensure that it remains a safe and inviting space for family and guests.

Turner's Choice Wood Treatment (5 Gallon Pail) | Seals and Protects from Moisture, Decay, and Pest Damage

Based on 26 reviews Check latest price

Product description

DIRECTIONS FOR USE: For best results soak the wood blank for a period of up to 24 hours prior to turning or carving. Immediate submersion of green woods is recommended however not mandatory. Soft and closed cell woods require additional soak time whereas hardwoods will absorb the solution immediately. Each and every Native or Exotic wood requires specific procedures to be determined by the artist. Treatment is considered complete when the exodus of air bubbles from the submersed blank is no longer observed. Extended treatment time will not compromise the result. Heating of the solution to a temperature of up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit will accelerate treatment and assist in the Bulking and curing of the Silicone and Cedar Oil compounds. Allow a determined drip and cure time prior to the initiation of the cutting or carving procedure. A72 hour elapsed wait time is satisfactory but will vary on different wood species. Final sanding and finishing turns will become enhanced as an internal adhesion of the wood fiber has been promoted by the treatment. Start to finish projects are recognized. Staged drying periods during production are not necessary.

User questions & answers

Question: Does Turners choice require a catalyst to be mixed in the gallon as an activator, then do you have to cure it in a oven for a little time
Answer: I used this for some birch “cookies”. Soaked in covered container..then let air dry.
Question: Is it suitable to apply this product to wood using a vacuum chamber
Answer: I can't even speculate. I just paint it on. It doesn't work on all woods, but right now I'm getting miraculous results on second-growth redwood that was cut a year ago. I paint it on, cover with plastic, and repeat every day or two for a week or two.
Question: Can i apply a stain after treating wood with turner's choice wood stabilizer
Answer: Yes you can apply stain after treating. For best results let the piece dry thoroughly.
Question: We are planning on using wood slices for a craft; Will we still be able to paint on the slices once this is applied? How long does it take to "cure
Answer: I have not used it as a base for finish but, I think I'd try giving it 48 hrs to dry. You might be able to go directly over it with oil base paint or may be acrylics. You might need coat of SealCoat, sanding sealer , dewaxed shelac by Zinser. I would probably recommend that but, you can experiment and see what works for you. If you are using end grain slices they may develop pie shape splits. They sell Turner's Choice under a new name now though you can still find T C on the web.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference between ipe finish and tigerwood finish, as my deck has been called both
Answer: the AEB10 has good sustain and great tone even through a small amp. It's a great bass for the money. Much better than the AEB5E tone wise. They play about the same.
Question: The deck is Tigerwood, but rails are not. Can I use this on rails that are a softer wood
Answer: The best way to answer is with a picture but I don't see that option. The button is on the bottom of the neck where the neck attaches to the body. The other end is exactly where you would expect nearly every guitar.
Question: Need a good oil based sealer for cedar siding,a darker brown
Answer: Yes, this should plug into any standard amp.

User questions & answers

Question: Can someone explain the color options and it turning Gray what is the point of getting a color if it's going to be grey
Answer: I don’t believe the color relevant, it’s not like paint. One way or another you will get an aged wood look, and, in my opinion, the color will depend on what wood you are using.
Question: can I use this on a deck that has already been sealed with an oil sealer like Timber Oil
Answer: No, bare untreated wood.
Question: Does this product need a sealer after it dries
Answer: I built wooden planter boxes 6' X 8' from untreated Douglas Fir and used nothing but Eco on them. 3 years later, they are looking brand new!
Question: Can you dilute eco wood treatment for a lighter stain? i just want a very light grey
Answer: We have used this product on entire structure and mixed according to directions. However, I recommend testing on a scrap piece of board then you are sure to get the color you want. It does get a little darker after a couple of days depending on your wood. I have no doubt you can dilute and get the perfect shade you want. We wanted ours darker so we sprayed on 2 coats and it turned out perfect. Love it! . This is a great product and when we are completely finished I will be happy to share photos.

User questions & answers

Question: does it work on wood floors
Answer: It works well on tile but since it etches the tile it wouldn't work well on wood.
Question: Is this product non-toxic? Will I be able to check it in a suitcase for air travel
Answer: Not sure if it is non-toxic or not, but it etches tile like an acid. I would be surprised if they would allow this on an airplane.
Question: Followed the directions but the slate has a milky haze. We have tried rinsing again to no avail. Any suggestions
Answer: It will go away over time but you can use some nano scrub to help remove it faster. Send us pictures if you continue to notice anything after a few days.
Question: Would this help my dogs from slipping and sliding on tile floors
Answer: When my tile got wet it was very slippery. Fell a few times. I live in florida so during the summer it rains everyday. I put this product down acording to the instructions. No more slipping!! Amazing.. As for your dogs ... i dont know. To me it would definately help. But with it being tile... and dogs... they're gonna slip some no matter what u put down
Question: how is it applied
Answer: Apply Xypex with a semi-stiff nylon bristle brush, push broom (for large horizontal surfaces), or specialized spray equipment. Do not apply Xypex with a trowel, roller, paintbrush or paint sprayer. The full Xypex application guideline is a three page document that I can’t link to/attach here, but if you perform a search for Xypex Coating Installation and Procedure you’ll pull it right up.
Question: Will it work on concrete that has some paint or coloring on it? I wouldn't think so, but thought I would ask
Answer: You will want to remove as much paint as possible. For the remaining paint, as long as that stays adhered to the wall, the product should stick ok to it. 80-90% removal is really what you are looking for. Hope this helps!
Question: Can I use this product to seal my damp basement concrete block wall
Answer: YES! THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS FOR! The REASON Xypex is so expensive is because it not only fills in cracks and creates a protective border but it actually EXPANDS inside cracks or where ever there is a need! Of the twenty plus people that have used this to waterproof their basement we have not only not had EVEN ONE complaint, but have been thanked numerous times! I used it on my Mom's basement-she had fought it for 45 years trying everything and once we used the Xypex on it 4 years ago NOT A DROP OF WATER LEAKS IN ANY LONGER! Dave
Question: Can i use this product if I have cracks repaired with epoxy
Answer: The short answer is no. The long answer is it depends on what you are trying to accomplish.(yes and no) If an epoxy injection has failed to stop water then you will need to chip and grind the epoxy away and make sure you have a clean and saturated substrate prior to Xypex treatment. If your goal is to stop water make sure you use both Xypex Concentrate and Xypex patch n plug. If you are wanting the Xypex to adhere to the epoxy and grow crystals through the concrete somehow after it gets through the epoxy to decrease permeability in the concrete then the answer is no. Xypex works with concrete not epoxy. Xypex is cementitious and similar to concrete, epoxy is foreign and with waterproofing is more of a blocker instead of healing concrete. Xypex is hydrophilic and has a catylytic affinity to water, epoxy is hydrophobic and wants to block water. Sometimes we use both to accomplish the same goal but I suppose if you wanted to coat your walls with Xypex Concentrate adjacent to the cracks that are filled with epoxy you are good to go. The Xypex will grow up until the point where the epoxy injection is, obviously depending on the porosity and permeability of your concrete but in that case yes it would be like a belt and suspenders approach.

The Thompson's Company has earned a well-deserved reputation as identifying industry trends and emerging technologies.

In the early 1920’s, polymer chemist Edward Addis Thompson developed a formula that protected buildings from exterior water damage.
