13 best cedar fence stains

Cedar fence stains are specialized products designed to protect and enhance the appearance of cedar wood fences. Cedar is a popular choice for fencing due to its natural beauty, durability, and resistance to decay and insect infestations. However, over time, cedar can weather, turn gray, and become vulnerable to UV rays and moisture. Cedar fence stains address these issues by providing a protective barrier and enhancing the wood's appearance.

Here are some key points about cedar fence stains:

  1. Protection: Cedar fence stains provide a protective layer that helps shield the wood from moisture, UV rays, mildew, and other environmental factors. This protection can extend the lifespan of your cedar fence.

  2. Color Enhancement: Stains come in a variety of colors, and you can choose one that complements your outdoor aesthetics. They can deepen the natural color of cedar or even change it to a different hue while allowing the wood's grain to show through.

  3. Transparency Levels: Cedar fence stains are available in different levels of transparency, including clear, semi-transparent, and solid. The level of transparency affects how much of the wood grain is visible.Clear stains offer minimal color change but provide UV protection, while solid stains offer more color coverage.

  4. Application Methods: Cedar fence stains can be applied using various methods, such as brushing, rolling, or spraying. The chosen method depends on your preferences and the stain product you select.

  5. Maintenance: Stained cedar fences require periodic maintenance. The frequency of reapplication depends on factors like climate, exposure to the elements, and the quality of the stain used. Regular inspections for wear and tear are essential to ensure the stain continues to protect the wood effectively.

  6. Preparation: Before staining your cedar fence, it's crucial to prepare the surface properly. This may involve cleaning, sanding, or power-washing to remove dirt, mildew, and old stains.

  7. Stain Types: There are two primary types of cedar fence stains: oil-based and water-based. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Oil-based stains tend to penetrate deeper and provide longer-lasting protection, while water-based stains are easier to clean up and emit fewer fumes.

  8. Environmental Impact: Some stains are formulated to be eco-friendly and low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds), making them a more sustainable choice.

  9. Cost: Cedar fence stains come in a wide price range, with premium brands often offering better longevity and color retention. However, the initial cost may be higher.

Remember that the choice of cedar fence stain depends on your preferences for appearance, budget, and environmental considerations. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper application and maintenance to ensure your cedar fence remains both protected and visually appealing for years to come.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you open the metal can
Answer: You can use a flat head screw driver to get the lid off or they sell actual paint lid tools at the hardware store.
Question: How long has this lasted with lots of sun
Answer: It’s been on my fence 1 year and still looks fantastic! Had plenty of sun, rain and some snow. I think it says 3 years?
Question: How many feet does 5gallon cover
Answer: 5 gallons cover 625 sq. ft.
Question: Does it work on concrete
Answer: No I do not think it would work on any concrete or stone surface. It's not a paint and I think it would not soak in. I have used it on my wood deck and fence but it really works better on a wooden fence.

Product features

Stain + Sealant in One

Stain + Sealant in One protects and beautifies in one step.

Weather-Ready Application

Allows greater opportunities for staining when it may rain or when the weather may be too hot or cold.

Enhanced waterproofing protection

Helps make sure your wood is protected from cracking due to water.

Advanced SunBlock UV

Helps protects your wood from dangerous UV rays that can wear down the coating.

How much stain do you need to buy?

One gallon of wood stain covers approximately 250-350 square feed, which is enough for a small to medium deck. It should also cover both sides of a 25 foot long fence or a couple pieces of furniture.

Two Gallons

Two gallons of wood stain cover approximately 600 square feed, which should be more than enough for the standard deck project or a 50 foot long fence.

Three or more Gallons

Three or more gallons of wood stain will most likely only be needed on large projects, as they should cover over 850 square feed.

Note: Solid Color Stain requires two coats. You should effectively double your gallons purchased when using a solid.

How To Stain Your Wood Deck In 3 Easy Steps

Sweep debris from deck and then use a product such as Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to penetrate the wood and lift dirt to the surface to be cleaned, as well as clean stains caused by mildew, dirt, algae and mold. Allow surface to dry.

STEP 2

Tape off any surfaces you don’t want stained. Also, avoid staining in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces because the stain will dry too fast to penetrate properly.

STEP 3

For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.

For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even. Make sure to treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.

You’re going to want to follow the directions on your stain container to determine if anything needs done after your final application.

User questions & answers

Question: How many years does it last
Answer: Our cedar fence posts were installed two years ago and stained with Leatherwood. They needed to be re-stained last fall, so 18 months? At that point, we could tell they needed re-stained, but they didn't look too bad. Now they look bad (i.e., washed out/faded). So it appears their two-year promise is a stretch and depends on how well the stain is applied and whether the wood is primarily in shade or sun.
Question: is this non toxic
Answer: Yes, this is non toxic. There are no toxic raw materials in this product.
Question: can this be applied to pressuure treated wood decking
Answer: “For any horizontal surfaces like decks we recommend our Wood Defender 200 Series. It is formulated for horizontal surfaces that will be tracked or walked on.”
Question: Is it oil based and can I apply with pump up sprayer
Answer: Hello and thank you for your question. Our product is in fact an oil based stain and is easily applied with a pump garden style sprayer. If you have a lot of fence to stain, a backpack style pump sprayer may allow you to complete the job more efficiently. To apply, begin at the top of the fence and simply saturate the surface which will allow the product to soak in evenly. The Wood Defender is designed to soak in evenly without any need for back-brushing to achieve a nice even uniform application. One of the most important attributes of the Wood Defender product as compared to other products on the retail market is that the stain can remain in the sprayer for extended amounts of time without causing any problems. For example, if you get started and need to take a break simply work yourself to a corner or a stopping point and set the sprayer down. You can leave the stain in the tank, hose, gun, tip without any issues. Hours later or days later, when your ready to start spraying again shake it up very well and continue where you left off! Once you've completed the job, you may clean out your pump sprayer with mineral spirits and then flush that with fresh water. Now your ready to use the pump sprayer for other projects until your fence needs to be re stained. Thank you for your interest in our Wood Defender Exterior Wood Stains and good luck with your project!

User questions & answers

Question: will this work in paint gun
Answer: yes it will, that's how I applied it.
Question: Will be applying to white cedar fence. How dry does the wood have to be
Answer: I did not heed the "one year" to dry on the new portion of my deck. Did old and new at the same time when the new portion was perhaps 2 months old. There was a definite difference. I washed and brightened both. Also did two coats. The 2nd coat was done while the first coat was still wet as per instructions. Also brushed vs. rolled. The stain seeped into the older wood much better and the color is richer. Don't believe the stain will last for years. In covered areas yes, it does. But my deck area that gets full S.Carolina sun, does not last the year. I re-stained last year and will be doing a layer of water proofing on horizontal surfaces this year in hopes that I won't have to stain again for a while. I am still happy that I bought the water based just because of the clean up and the ease of re-staining even if I feel I had to do it much quicker than if I had used oil based.
Question: Can I use this on my new cream colored bamboo blinds? Unsure about the method they were colored, but almost no sheen. Want stain protection in kitchen
Answer: Hard to say without looking at the wood , but if the wood still looks porous enough we're the Stain can soak in some I would think a light coat possibly 2 would do it. It's very thin milky color but dries clear
Question: I am applying this to a fence. Would you recommend it for fences? Also, if you have used this product how well is it holding up
Answer: Using it for 10 years, great on fences. Apply W weed oil sprayer. Brush W 4" throw away brush as needed. Time between coats varies W the look you want. 2-3 years looks great. At 5 years fading is noticeable. Apply when cool. Dampen surfaces to get soak in.
Question: Can I use this on kitchen cabinets made with walnut veneer? My goal is to keep the natural raw, light look but also see the grain, not milky
Answer: No, don’t use on kitchen cabinets. Instead use water base polyurethane. Easy clean up and is just as good as oil base polyurethane.
Question: Can this be used to seal laminate flooring
Answer: It is not for interior use. Also you cannot stain , paint or varnish over Seal-Once products. Seal-Once must be applied to raw wood.
Question: Can this be used over an oil base stain
Answer: No.
Question: What’s the best product for Douglas fir pergola
Answer: No, this Seal Once product is not made for pergola floors, it has a dull finish. Not shiny. I would think you would want a poly eyrthane, which is durable and has a shine, recommend a semi-gloss. I would suggest you go to Sherwin Williams and consult their opinion.

User questions & answers

Question: The listing says semi-transparent, but the picture says transparent, which version is this
Answer: Semi
Question: Is this a gallon container of the product
Answer: Yes this is a one gallon of Thompson water seal
Question: what clear seal do you recommend to use on 12year old pressure treated planks
Answer: I've used Thompson's water-based semi-transparent stain/sealer 3 times now for my 15 year-old pressure-treated deck and it has always done a great job of covering and protecting the wood. It doesn't really last the 4 years they claim, but still very good. They also make an oil-based clear sealer and I use that on my cedar pergola, also very good stuff but it's hard to work with because it doesn't cleanup with water. As an alternative to the oil-base they have an all-purpose water-based clear sealer for wood and masonry. I would use that on my pergola if it was made of pressure treated wood, but with cedar I really want a penetrating oil. So for your pressure treated deck, I would recommend the water-based clear sealer. Given how well the semi-transparent stain has worked for me, I would expect good results with the clear as well. You will certainly want to clean the wood first if you expect to brighten the gray appearance of aged wood. I spray oxygen bleach on the wood first and then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse before sealing.
Question: Would this product work well on untreated Adirondack furniture
Answer: Yes, I think it would be suitable. I have only used it on my deck however. Good protection in a wet climate. Rub it down well after it dries to keep the color from getting on clothes though if you're using a color stain.

Answer: I bought 2 gallons of light oak about a month ago. Look again or call the company.
Question: Can I reapply this over the old coat when I need to
Answer: I'd clean the boards the best you can and let them dry, and then yes, you can reapply it. It says so on the can.

Answer: depends. cover says 100 - 150 sq ft per gallon. I used 7.5 gallons on about 600sq ft of deck and barely had enough, that was 2 coats. 1st coat sucked up a lot, 2nd coat went a lot farther

Product features

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains

Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, NANO+POLY creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape. This key feature helps prevent damage to wood caused by water intrusion, such as: wood rot, decay, mold & mildew growth, cracking & splitting. Typical wood sealers form a barrier on the surface of the wood, trapping moisture below the surface. As the water evaporates, it causes the surface coating and the substrate to crack & peel, leaving a broken surface that requires continued maintenance and is susceptible to additional damage. SEAL-ONCE uses cutting-edge, nano-particle technology to allow wood to breath and help prevent water vapor damage by protecting wood from the inside out.

Water-based Product that Will Not Harm People, Pets, Plants, Livestock or Marine Life.

SEAL-ONCE products are ultra-low VOC, low odor, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-ozone depleting. They are safer for the environment and do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.

Quick & Easy Application

Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight.

Available in 11 Tinted Wood Stain Colors

NANO+POLY can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray. The tints are sold separately and when mixed with Clear, the tinted formula provides additional UV protection from harmful sun rays.

Surface Preparation & Coverage

Approximate coverage: 250-350 sq. ft./gallon per coat. Actual coverage will vary due to the porosity of the surface. All surfaces should be cleaned with SEAL-ONCE All Wood Cleaner before sealing for best penetration and performance. Remove all old coatings, dust, debris and loose material. Remove oil, grease, algae, grime, mill glaze and mold and mildew stains with appropriate cleaners.

  • A translucent oil finish that protects and beautifies wood's natural appearance
  • Water repellent; deep penetrating
  • Ideal for decks, siding, fences and trim
  • Available in 5 wood toned colors
  • Not intended for interior surfaces

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be applied to a deck that the wood is pine treated wood
Answer: Some say wait a year to stain and some say do it right away. I called Cabot with a question at 1-800-877-8246 and they answered pretty fast. I used this on an old deck and it came out very dark but I was ok with that. Couldnt find 7 gallons all at one place. Had to brush it all in to look good. $40 for a gallon is a good price. Accidentally bough $40 for a quart. Make sure you read description. This is a special oil/water mix. It rinses with water.
Question: Is this easily removed from metal balusters? Does the natural make the wood much darker
Answer: Yep, just have rag with you and wipe it off. This is a great stain, highly recommend it. So, I purchased the Natural Cedar, the stain looks milky in the can, but applies and as it drys, gives a rich Cedar color.
Question: How many square feet (approximately) will a 1-gal can cover
Answer: If you sand/prep before and wash planks - 1 gal will get you at least 350 sq feet.
Question: What is the difference between the Heartwood 19204 and the Heartwood 3004? Thanks
Answer: You can call Cabot at 1-800-US-STAIN (877-8246) and they answer pretty quickly. The 19204 is probably the new miscible oil/water mix. And the 3004 would be the classic oil mix. You cannot mix the two or use one on top of the other but you can clean the 19204 brushes after with water. They claim the new mix is more durable.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be strayed onto a fence
Answer: Transformation Siding & Trim stain can be used on fences. For optimal performance, we recommend that the fence be cleaned well and any grayed/sunburnt wood sanded down prior to application. For more information, please visit our website at https://www.sashco.com/log-home/ or call us at 1-800-767-5656.
Question: Is the item provide slip resistance
Answer: Transformation Siding & Trim does not provide slip resistance. Because it does not dry to a high shine, it is less likely to be slippery when wet. You can add something like Shark Skin to the top of the stain for slip resistance.
Question: Do you need to use a sealer along with this product
Answer: Transformation Siding & Trim is meant to have 2 coats applied (1 heavy flood coat, 1 lighter 2nd coat). There is no additional sealer required. If you would like to talk to one of our product specialists, you can email us at [email protected] or call us at 1-800-767-5656.
Question: So it says semi-transparent and I’m wondering how much tint is in the Natural color. I am looking for a light golden color for my exterior ceiling
Answer: The Natural is one of the lightest colors in the Siding & Trim line. You can see quite a bit of the wood character through it. We ALWAYS recommend brushing out samples of the stains, because your wood will contribute quite a bit to the finished look. You can get free samples by calling us at 1-800-767-5656.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it take a long time to dry
Answer: We have had a ton of rain so I have not used it yet.
Question: How cold can I apply this to my covered porch?? Thanks rr
Answer: Hello, The application temperature must be between 50-90 F.
Question: Should I wipe down the wet spots after a few days of drying
Answer: Hello, Yes lightly wipe those spots and and make sure those areas are dry before putting into use. note: wet spots could have been caused by a lack of penetration into the wood (a previous stain or sealant could be the culprit), applying to heavy, or the presence of moisture in the wood.
Question: How do you open the plastic seal lid
Answer: Hello, Thanks for your question on this. The plastic lid can be slightly difficult to take off, but is applied to ensure safe transport. To remove, I have found that a paint can opener or flat head screw driver wedged either in the top or on the side on the can works pretty easily. Be sure not to use a hammer to try and wedge the flat head screw driver in, as you want to avoid damaging the metal can.

User questions & answers

Question: How much does 1 gallon cover
Answer: About 1/4 of an 8x12 shed. I used 4 gallons for the whole shed
Question: Will this work with a paint gun
Answer: Yes, this product works well with an airless sprayer
Question: Is there any texture to this solid stain? Does it last without peeling for a couple years
Answer: There is no texture, just a smooth paint that took the texture of what we painted it on. No idea on the peel, only just used in the last couple weeks.
Question: How much do I need for a 24’ x 18’ deck
Answer: This is a water based product and as such gets a better coverage area. The product should yield approximately 600 SF. However, when staining a deck, you'll not meet that coverage area if you use an airless paint sprayer. Typically the average would be 450 - 475 SF. If you roll it, you should expect to get between 500 - 525 SF.
