User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be applied to a deck that the wood is pine treated wood
Answer: Some say wait a year to stain and some say do it right away. I called Cabot with a question at 1-800-877-8246 and they answered pretty fast. I used this on an old deck and it came out very dark but I was ok with that. Couldnt find 7 gallons all at one place. Had to brush it all in to look good. $40 for a gallon is a good price. Accidentally bough $40 for a quart. Make sure you read description. This is a special oil/water mix. It rinses with water.
Question: Is this easily removed from metal balusters? Does the natural make the wood much darker
Answer: Yep, just have rag with you and wipe it off. This is a great stain, highly recommend it. So, I purchased the Natural Cedar, the stain looks milky in the can, but applies and as it drys, gives a rich Cedar color.
Question: How many square feet (approximately) will a 1-gal can cover
Answer: If you sand/prep before and wash planks - 1 gal will get you at least 350 sq feet.
Question: What is the difference between the Heartwood 19204 and the Heartwood 3004? Thanks
Answer: You can call Cabot at 1-800-US-STAIN (877-8246) and they answer pretty quickly. The 19204 is probably the new miscible oil/water mix. And the 3004 would be the classic oil mix. You cannot mix the two or use one on top of the other but you can clean the 19204 brushes after with water. They claim the new mix is more durable.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the coverage of one gallon
Answer: I believe it is. I used it over the previous stain and it seemed very close.
Question: can this be put on with a airless sprayer
Answer: This was my first time in using the new formula of Cabot. I personally prefer the old formula. I am in California and after the winter we have had, the stain is standing up very well to the weather. Waiting to see how often I will need to reapply. To put it on I recommend using a good bristle brush, I use a 3" brush. The pressure treated wood took the stain differently than the redwood did., but it did take it. I also applied the stain in the heat of summer for the best response to the wood. Good luck on your project.
Question: use on pressure treated wood
Answer: Yes, just brush it on.
Question: We have a deck built around an above ground pool. We are replacing boards and want to seal the deck. What is the best, most durable for this
Answer: It is not a stain per se, but a protective coating that penetrates wood. The Amazon seller sold me a pint with a quart price so be careful. Also available at Home Depot or Lowe’s

Cabot 140.0016316.007 Semi-Transparent Deck & Siding Low VOC Exterior Stain, Gallon, New Cedar

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Cabot Bleaching Stain is uniquely formulated to accelerate the natural weathering process of uncoated exterior wood. It contains a small amount of gray pigment and a chemical ingredient that actually bleaches the wood's surface. When first applied, this product gives a delicate gray tone, and during the first few months' exposure it gradually turns into a beautiful, natural driftwood gray color. This weathered effect, if derived by nature, would require many years of harsh exposure, which often turns wood dark and uneven in appearance. Cabot Bleaching Stain produces a self-protecting finish and achieves a uniform weathered look in only 3 to 6 months.

  • Lightly pigmented to accentuate wood grain
  • Water-repellent and UV protection
  • Oil Based and Acrylic Water Based formulas available
  • One coat application
  • When properly applied won't crack, peel or blister

Question: I am looking for "olympic natural look protector plus sealant ", for my red wood deck. is this the same one

Product features

Stain + Sealant in One

Stain + Sealant in One protects and beautifies in one step.

Weather-Ready Application

Allows greater opportunities for staining when it may rain or when the weather may be too hot or cold.

Enhanced waterproofing protection

Helps make sure your wood is protected from cracking due to water.

Advanced SunBlock UV

Helps protects your wood from dangerous UV rays that can wear down the coating.

How much stain do you need to buy?

One gallon of wood stain covers approximately 250-350 square feed, which is enough for a small to medium deck. It should also cover both sides of a 25 foot long fence or a couple pieces of furniture.

Two Gallons

Two gallons of wood stain cover approximately 600 square feed, which should be more than enough for the standard deck project or a 50 foot long fence.

Three or more Gallons

Three or more gallons of wood stain will most likely only be needed on large projects, as they should cover over 850 square feed.

Note: Solid Color Stain requires two coats. You should effectively double your gallons purchased when using a solid.

How To Stain Your Wood Deck In 3 Easy Steps

Sweep debris from deck and then use a product such as Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to penetrate the wood and lift dirt to the surface to be cleaned, as well as clean stains caused by mildew, dirt, algae and mold. Allow surface to dry.

STEP 2

Tape off any surfaces you don’t want stained. Also, avoid staining in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces because the stain will dry too fast to penetrate properly.

STEP 3

For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.

For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even. Make sure to treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.

You’re going to want to follow the directions on your stain container to determine if anything needs done after your final application.
