9 best rated stud finder

A rated stud finder is a specialized tool used in home improvement and construction to locate the position of studs or wall framing behind drywall or other wall materials. Studs are essential structural elements in a wall, and finding them accurately is crucial when you need to hang heavy objects like shelves, mirrors, or cabinets, or when you're planning to make modifications to your wall, such as installing electrical outlets or switches.

Here are some key features and functions of a rated stud finder:

  1. Stud Detection: A rated stud finder typically uses various technologies to detect studs behind the wall. Common methods include electronic sensors, magnetic sensors, and radar-based sensors. These sensors work by detecting changes in density or composition in the wall.

  2. Depth Measurement: Some advanced stud finders can also measure the depth of the stud, helping you determine if it's suitable for anchoring heavy objects securely.

  3. Live AC Wire Detection: Many rated stud finders also have the capability to detect live electrical wiring within the wall to ensure that you don't accidentally drill into a live wire, which could be dangerous.

  4. LCD Display: They often come equipped with a digital display that provides real-time information about stud location, depth, and other relevant data.

  5. Calibration: It's important to calibrate the stud finder properly before use to ensure accurate results. Calibration involves placing the device on the wall and allowing it to adjust to the wall's composition.

  6. Marking Features: Some stud finders have built-in markers or indicators that help you mark the center of the stud precisely, making it easier to mount objects securely.

  7. Battery-Powered: Most stud finders are powered by batteries, so it's essential to ensure they have sufficient power before starting a project.

When using a rated stud finder, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to achieve accurate results. Always double-check your findings and consider using multiple detection methods if necessary to confirm the stud's location.

Keep in mind that the performance of stud finders can vary based on the type of wall material (e.g., drywall, plaster, lath and plaster) and the presence of obstructions or irregularities in the wall. Therefore, it's a good practice to test the stud finder on an area with known stud locations before starting your project to ensure you're comfortable with its operation and accuracy.

Product features

Scanning for wood studs

  • Maximum detection depth: Exact mode:20mm; Deep mode:38mm.
  • Wood detection mode will detect objects in gypsum drywall, plywood sheathing, bare wood flooring, coated wooden wall. Wood detection mode will not detect objects in concrete, mortar, block, brick work, plaster, carpeting, foil-faced materials, metallic surfaces, ceramic tile, glass, or any other dense material.

Scanning for metal objects

  • Maximum detection depth: Ferrous metals: 100mm; Non-ferrous metals (Copper): 80mm.
  • When the metal is detected, the screen will show the depth value synchronously, but if the signal is weak, or the tool cannot distinguish that the metal object is magnetic or non-magnetic, the depth value will not be displayed. The depth value is the distance from the center of the sensor to the scanned object. At the position of minimum depth value, the metal object is located near the center of the sensor.

Scanning for wires

  • Maximum detection depth: 50mm (220V@50Hz / 110V @ 60 Hz).
  • The signal strength of a “live” wire depends on the position of the cable. Therefore, apply further measurements in close proximity or use other information sources to check if a “live” wire exists.

How to find the stud

  • Hold the tool straight up and down, position it onto the surface to be scanned, and do not rotate the tool.
  • Press the mode button briefly to enter the wood stud detection mode, the symbol will flash on the screen. Do not move until the symbol stop flashing and the green light is on, automatic calibration of the tool is completed.

Step 2

  • Move the tool uniformly and slowly over the surface without lifting it off or changing the applied pressure. During the scan , the tool must cling the wall, otherwise it will automatically calibrate again. Please wait for the symbol stop flashing and the green light to light up again and then move the tool.

Step 3

  • When the tool comes close to a stud, the scale m and the percentage n will increase, the distance indicator l will appear. As the tool gets closer to the stud, the yellow indicator will light. As it detected the center of the stud, the red light is on.

Step 4

  • To make the detection results more reliable, when the center is marked, please slide the tool across the wall again to check if the center is near the location of the highest percentage.

User questions & answers

Question: does it detect floor studs under carpet and padding
Answer: Scan goes 1.5 inches on deep scan most subfloors are 1 inch plus carpet and pad.....my guess is no. Im guessing you need to add floor outlet. In that case look for hvac vents in floor to show orientation of floor joices. Best thing ive done is drill 1/8 inch hole and put long steel wire down through insulation then go in crawl to see if in between floor joices. Ive seen some electricians just drill it where homeowner wants floor outlet and if they hit joice they just drilled it out and installed floorbox to hide mistake. Most stud finders dont do good on flooring
Question: Does it work on metal studs
Answer: Yes.
Question: Our walls are 3/4 inch tongue and groove. Will this be able to detect through that
Answer: The ProSensor 710+ should detect through wood tongue and groove walling material.
Question: will it detect and show studs behind plaster and lath
Answer: This unit can detect studs through lath and plaster, but it is not guaranteed as it is on drywall. Because lath and plaster usually is usually thicker and less consistent, it could lead to some inconsistent readings. The multiple sensors and deep sensing capabilities on this stud finder give it a better chance on lath and plaster, but it cannot be guaranteed.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work thru plaster/wood lathe
Answer: Hello! Our stud finders work by finding density, and concrete tends to be denser than studs behind it. The density of the concrete will throw off the sensor. Best regards, The Franklin Sensors Team
Question: Can this detect electrical wires
Answer: Nope - your only hope there would be to buy (or find a tool rental place that will rent) the $700 Bosch D-Tect 150 terahertz radar unit. That will literally look inside anything short of an aluminum trailer skin and see stuff as deep as six inches..
Question: Will this work through tile. Need to install grab-bar in shower
Answer: If you are asking if it will, the answer is probably not. It senses the subtile change in the inductance of its coils produced by the VERY slight change in density of a stud behind a sheet rock wall. The problem with finding rafters is that they are under decking, plus underlayment (probably tarpaper) and THEN the shingles. And neither the shingles nor the tarpaper are particularly uniform. I'm afraid the only tool that will do what you want is the $700 Bosch terahertz radar unit.
Question: Will this be accurate with metal studs
Answer: Hello, The T13 is slightly deeper sensing at 1.7" deep while the 710+ senses to 1.6" deep, and the T13 has a pencil caddy. Both have 13 sensors and a 7" LED display. Thank you for your inquiry! Best regards, The Franklin Sensors Team

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work to detect studs in walls with spray foam insulation
Answer: Hi. Zircon stud finders and multiscanners are optimized for standard interior drywall construction. Other interior surfaces can be penetrated with our scanners, but brick, slate, and rock type material are too dense. Thanks.
Question: How is "wirewarning detection" different than "ac scan mode"? both say they find, "live, unshielded electrical ac wires up to 2 inches (50 cm) deep
Answer: Hi. The packaging you received your A250 in is called "FFP". That stands for frustration free packaging. The other type would be the standard plastic "clamshell". Most folks prefer the FFP. I believe you can purchase the stud finder products either way from Amazon. Thanks.
Question: does this stud finder come packaged, mine did not is that normal
Answer: Hello Chris. Due to the variables in building techniques, materials and densities in exterior construction Zircon stud sensors are recommended for interior use only. Our stud sensors locate studs by finding changes in density and the density of the material you mention would not allow the A250 to calibrate properly and as such would prevent it from scanning for the studs. Thank you.
Question: Will it work with brick walls
Answer: Hello. The stud finder A250 does not come with a case. Thank you.

Product features

Zircon MultiScanner A200

The MS A200 is a handheld tool dedicated to quickly and efficiently find studs, detect metal and alert you of live AC wiring. The A200 comes equipped with 3 scanning modes: StudScan, DeepScan and Metal Scan.

3 Mode Multifunctional Wall Scanner with Backlit Display

The Zircon MultiScanner A200 makes scanning easy with its newly designed ergonomic grip. The scanner's StudScan finds shallower wood or metal studs up to 0.75 in. (19 mm) deep while DeepScan doubles the scanning depth to 1.5 in. (38 mm).

Metal Scan locates both non-ferrous (non-magnetic) metal, such as copper pipe, and ferrous (magnetic) metal, such as rebar. The A200 is able to detect non-ferrous metal up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep, and ferrous metal up to 3 in. (75 mm) deep.

The A200 also includes WireWarning Detection that automatically operates in StudScan, DeepScan and Metal Scan Modes. This safety feature alerts you to the presence of live, unshielded electrical AC wires while scanning for studs and metal.

Before use, always be sure to install a brand new 9V alkaline battery. Zircon stud finders, particularly those with LCD screens, require and consume a great deal of current from batteries. For optimal performance, brand-new, recently purchased alkaline batteries with an extended expiration date, are strongly recommended for use in these tools.

StudScan and DeepScan

Use StudScan Mode to find the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs up to 0.75 in. (19 mm) deep.

For best results, always start in StudScan Mode when looking for studs.

If StudScan Mode provides irregular readings, or the Signal Strength Indicator is weak, the studs might be behind deeper than 0.75 in. (19 mm). Slide the Mode Selector Switch to DeepScan Mode. This doubles the scanning depth to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep and allows for increased accuracy on deeper targets.

Before scanning, hold the A200 flat against wall and press the Power Button to calibrate. Be sure not to move the scanner while calibrating. After a short beep sounds confirming calibration is complete, continue pressing the Power Button and slide the scanner slowly against the surface.

When the A200 finds the edges and center of a stud, 'Edge' and 'Center' displays respectively, indicating you have found your target. When the stud's center is located, the SpotLite Pointer also illuminates and a short beep sounds.

The center of the stud is the stud's most secure location. It is critical to drill in the center of a stud when mounting heavy objects.

Note: WireWarning Detection works in both StudScan and DeepScan Modes. The WireWarning Detection Icon will appear when live, unshielded wires are detected.

Metal Scan

Detect Both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metal.

Use Metal Scan Mode to locate and avoid hazards, such as pipes, behind walls and determine if a stud is wood or metal.

Metal Scan Mode detects non-ferrous metal, such as copper pipe, up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep, and ferrous metal, such as rebar, up to 3 in. (75 mm) deep.

To use, be sure to first calibrate the A200. For maximum sensitivity, press and hold the Power Button while holding the scanner away from the surface. Once a short beep sounds confirming calibration is complete, place against the surface to be scanned. Be sure to continue to hold the Power Button.

Just like in AC Scan Mode, slowly slide the scanner across the surface and mark the spot where the most display bars peak. Continue scanning until the bars reduce and reverse the direction.

The midpoint between the two marks is the location of the metal target.

Note: WireWarning Detection works in Metal Scan Mode. The WireWarning Detection Icon will appear when live, unshielded wires are detected.

WireWarning Detection

Be Alerted of Live Electrical Wiring in all Modes.

WireWarning Detection is a feature that is always on while scanning in StudScan, DeepScan, and Metal Scan Modes.

It alerts you to the presence of live, unshielded electrical AC wires up to 2 inches (50 cm) deep.

As you approach an area with live AC voltage, a lightning bolt icon will display on the LCD screen. This the WireWarning Detection Icon. If your scan directly starts over an area with live AC voltage, the WireWarning Detection Icon will flash.

Note: Please turn off the electricity and use extreme caution in areas where live AC voltage is detected before nailing or drilling.

Auto Correcting Technology (ACT)

Automatically Have Common Errors Corrected.

This feature enables the scanner to automatically adjust for common calibration errors. It checks calibration 10 times per second and automatically recalibrates when/if needed. If scanning begins directly over a stud, the tool will transparently recalibrate, so you don't have to, and will find that stud when you scan back over it.

This recalibration is usually transparent and no indication is made. If an arrow icon illuminates, the scanner was calibrated near or over a stud and then moved away. The arrow indicates the direction of the missed stud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Does the MultiScanner A200 include a battery?

Answer: No. Zircon stud finders and detectors, particularly those with LCD screens, require and consume a great deal of current from batteries. For optimal performance, a brand-new, recently purchased 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date, is not included but is required to properly power the A200.

Question: I inserted a 9V battery, but the scanner doesn't turn on or is giving me strange readings. Is my scanner broken?

Answer: Please be sure to use a fresh, brand new 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date. Batteries that may work in a smoke detector or remote control may not have adequate voltage to power the sensing technology in MultiScanners.

Question: Does this scanner need to be calibrated?

Answer: Yes, as with all Zircon scanners, the MultiScanner A200 needs to calibrate to the surface before scanning. Calibrating the scanner on an empty wall gives the device a chance to measure the wall thickness and material density, as well as register factors like humidity, temperature, and even the minor electric readings from your hand, which all have an impact on the readings from the wall. Calibrating is easy and just takes a second. To calibrate, simply place the unit flat against the surface to be scanned and press the Power Button. When powering the A200 on, all the icons on the screen and the SpotLite Pointing System will briefly flash and the scanner will beep. After this occurs, the screen will then clear and, depending on the selected mode, the words 'StudScan', 'DeepScan' or 'Metal' will remain, indicating that calibration has occurred and the scanner is ready to begin scanning. It is important not to move the scanner or begin scanning until the calibration process has taken place for the most accurate results.

Question: What does 'Center Finding' mean?

Answer: Center Finding stud finders locate both the edges and the center of wood and metal studs and joists in one step. 'Edge Finding' stud finders, on the other hand, only find the edges of studs, so you must determine the center. Finding the center of the stud to mount heavy objects is critical as the stud's center is the most secure location of the stud.

Question: What is DeepScan Mode?

Answer: Unlike StudScan Mode, which scans through one layer of drywall up to 0.75 in. thick (19 mm), DeepScan Mode scans through 2 layers of drywall up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep. DeepScan Mode is a higher sensitivity scanning mode that should be used when there are extra layers of wallboard or paneling. Extra layers in a wall can make it difficult to find studs in regular StudScan Mode. To minimize false positives and/or finding other objects further behind the wall that may not be a stud, always start your scan in StudScan Mode first.

Question: How can I be certain the objects found behind my wall are studs in DeepScan Mode?

Answer: DeepScan Mode has increased sensitivity so you may have located something other than a stud. Studs are equally spaced to either side (12, 16, or 24 in. apart) and typically run from floor to ceiling. To better confirm that what you found is a stud, check for other studs equally spaced to either side and for the same stud at several heights directly above and below the first stud indication. A stud reading would also measure approximately 1.5 in. (38 mm) apart from each edge. Anything larger or smaller may not be a stud if not near a door or window.

Question: Will this MultiScanner A200 locate metal studs?

Answer: Yes, the A200 will locate metal studs in StudScan, DeepScan, and Metal Scan Modes. Since stud finders are looking for a change in density behind drywall, not a particular material, in StudScan, DeepScan, and Metal Scan Modes, the detector will react to metal studs the same as it would for wooden studs. The A200 will locate wood and metal studs up to 0.75 in. (19 mm) deep while DeepScan Mode locates targets up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep. In Metal Scan Mode, the detector will only detect metal studs, in addition to any other metal, within its specified scan depth and range.

Question: Why does the scanner beep and the lights flash when scanning for a stud?

Answer: The scanner could've been calibrated over a stud, calibrated on a dense part of the wall, or the back of the unit may have slightly lifted or tilted during the scan. Move the MultiScanner A200 over a couple of inches to the left or right, re-calibrate, and start your scan again.

Question: What is WireWarning Detection?

Answer: WireWarning Detection is a feature that is always on while you are scanning in StudScan, DeepScan, and Metal Scan Modes to alert you to the presence of live, unshielded electrical AC wires up to 2 in. (50 mm) deep. As you approach an area with live AC voltage, a lightning bolt icon will display on the LCD screen. This is the WireWarning Detection Icon. If your scan directly starts over an area with live AC voltage, this icon will flash. Please turn off the electricity and use extreme caution in areas where live ac voltage is detected before nailing or drilling.

Question: Why does the area of voltage appear much larger than an actual wire?

Answer: Static charge may develop on drywall, spreading voltage detection as much as 12 in. (30 cm) laterally from each side of an actual wire. To narrow detection, turn the scanner off and on again at the edge of where the wire was first detected and repeat the scan.

Question: I suspect electrical wires in a certain area when I scan, but why am I not detecting any?

Answer: Wires may be shielded in metal conduit or behind a metallic wall covering. It could also be that the wire is deeper than 2 in. or that the wire may not be live (hot). Try Metal Scan Mode to see if you can find metal, wire, or metal conduit. Always exercise extreme caution when working near electricity.

Question: Does the A200 work on wood paneling and other wood surfaces?

Answer: The A200 is optimized to scan through standard interior sheetrock / drywall (gypsum) construction. This scanner will work on wood, plywood, wood paneling and particle board up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) thick when in DeepScan Mode.

Question: Will the A200 work on textured wall surfaces, acoustic ceilings, or wallpaper?

Answer: Yes, the A200 will work on textured surfaces and dried wallpaper as long as it does not contain any metallic foil or fibers. For highly textured walls or acoustic ceilings, place or tape a thin piece of cardboard onto the surface to be scanned. Recalibrate and scan over the cardboard in DeepScan Mode.

Question: Can I use this scanner to find studs behind carpet?

Answer: No. Zircon scanners are designed for hollow interior walls. They will generally work well to find studs or joists through a plywood subfloor, after the carpeting/flooring has been removed.

Question: Will the A200 work on ceramic tile?

Answer: While the MultiScanner A200 may be able to scan through ceramic tile in DeepScan mode to locate studs, the many variable layers behind tiled surfaces make it one of the more difficult scanning environments. To find studs through ceramic tile, we suggest using Metal Scan Mode to find the nails or screw heads attaching the backing surface to the studs.

Question: Does this MultiScanner work on lath and plaster?

Answer: Yes. Using Metal Scan Mode, you can identify a stud behind the lath and plaster wall by locating the pattern of nail or screw heads attaching the wood lath to the studs. The nails or screws should be found in a column when scanning for metal. However, if the plaster has metal mesh reinforcement, the MultiScanner A200 will not be able to detect an accurate pattern of nail heads through that material.

Question: What does the Signal Strength Indicator do?

Answer: To help you filter out the target from potential decoys that would give the A200 a false reading, the Signal Strength Indicator gives a reading of the strength, or the certainty, of the returning signal from the wall. Three bars (the highest level) indicates an obvious result behind a normal wall, while two bars (or below) indicates that while the device has found something, it may either be a smaller object than your target, or the target is behind an extra thick wall. Since every wall is built differently, and since any wall can have pipes, wires, or other objects behind it that can return a result, you can use the Signal Strength Indicator to 'map out' your wall to determine the target from the other objects.

Question: Can I use this scanner to scan the outside wall of my house?

Answer: No. Zircon MultiScanners are designed and recommended for interior use only.

Question: I'm planning to mount my new flat screen TV to the wall. Will this scanner help me?

Answer: Yes. The A200 is ideal for basic home or office projects. The center-finding technology allows you to easily find and mark the center of the stud for secure mounting of TV's and AV equipment, closet or garage shelving, heavy mirrors, light fixtures, coat racks and more.

Question: Is the scanner waterproof?

Answer: No. The MultiScanner A200 is splash and water resistant, but not waterproof.

Question: What is the difference between magnetic and electronic stud finders?

Answer: Magnetic stud finders are simply magnets that look for anything magnetic behind a wall. Typically, they are advertised to find screws or nails that hold the wall surface to the studs. However, nails often times are not placed in the center of studs, making it difficult to determine where the stud's center is or how wide the stud is.

Electronic stud finders, such as the A200, on the other hand, operate by detecting density changes behind a surface (like a wall) and will clearly and precisely indicate the edges and center of a stud. The center of a stud is the most secure location when mounting anything heavy. For applications like mapping out floor joists, electronic stud finders have an advantage over magnets because they are not attracted to nails holding floor boards to a subfloor, as well as nails in joists.
