User questions & answers

Question: does it detect floor studs under carpet and padding
Answer: Scan goes 1.5 inches on deep scan most subfloors are 1 inch plus carpet and pad.....my guess is no. Im guessing you need to add floor outlet. In that case look for hvac vents in floor to show orientation of floor joices. Best thing ive done is drill 1/8 inch hole and put long steel wire down through insulation then go in crawl to see if in between floor joices. Ive seen some electricians just drill it where homeowner wants floor outlet and if they hit joice they just drilled it out and installed floorbox to hide mistake. Most stud finders dont do good on flooring
Question: Does it work on metal studs
Answer: Yes.
Question: Our walls are 3/4 inch tongue and groove. Will this be able to detect through that
Answer: The ProSensor 710+ should detect through wood tongue and groove walling material.
Question: will it detect and show studs behind plaster and lath
Answer: This unit can detect studs through lath and plaster, but it is not guaranteed as it is on drywall. Because lath and plaster usually is usually thicker and less consistent, it could lead to some inconsistent readings. The multiple sensors and deep sensing capabilities on this stud finder give it a better chance on lath and plaster, but it cannot be guaranteed.

Product features

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for floors? Or does it have to be hanging free in order to auto-level. I need to establish a level line 2" above my wavy old floor
Answer: I have the same question, I am putting in new floors and want to level them in this old house.
Question: Is there an option for it to level itself
Answer: Yes, it automatically levels itself.
Question: Can It project horizontal laser line to both side at the same time
Answer: It cannot. The laser projects out of any one of the three slits (left, top, right) at a time.
Question: How does the wall mount work
Answer: The wall mount is an oval-shaped plastic unit with a retractable ~5/8" spike on the back. It is hung using the spike and then the laser unit will attach magnetically. Note that the spike lines up level with the laser, so you use the spike as a pilot hole for your first hole when mounting things. The laser will of course also work without the wall mount, you can just hold it against the wall and it works fine that way too if you're not drilling. Hope that helps!

Find the Edges and the Center of Studs

1. StudScan Mode:

Use this mode to find the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 inches (19 millimeters) deep. For best results, always start in this mode when looking for studs.

Note: WireWarning detection works in all modes. The indicator flashes on the screen when detecting a live, unshielded wire.

2. DeepScan:

If Stud Scan mode provides irregular readings, or the Signal Strength Indicator is weak, the studs might be behind more than ¾ inches (19 millimeters) of drywall Quickly push the handle of the device downward twice to switch into DeepScan mode. This doubles the scanning depth to 1½ inches (38 millimeters) deep and allows for increased accuracy on deeper targets.

Note: WireWarning detection works in all modes. The indicator flashes on the screen when detecting a live, unshielded wire.

Metal Scan Mode Detects Both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metal

3. Metal Scan Mode:

Use this mode to locate and avoid hazards such as pipes behind walls. Metal Scan mode detects non-ferrous metal such as copper pipe up to 1½ inches deep, and ferrous metal such as rebar, up to 3 inches deep.

Use Metal Scan mode to differentiate between metal and wood studs. First, find the stud in StudScan mode. Then, switch to Metal Scan mode and run the MS 740 up and down the stud. The tool alerts in a pattern as it detects the drywall screws in the wood for wooden studs. The unit alerts along the length of the studs with metal studs

Note: WireWarning detection works in all modes. The indicator flashes on the screen when detecting a live, unshielded wire.

AC Scan Mode Helps Find and Trace Live, Unshielded Wires

4. AC Scan Mode:

In this mode, the LCD screen finds live, unshielded, electrical wires up to 2 inches (51 millimeters) deep. Move the MS 740 slowly across the surface and the signal indicates the proximity of the source. Mark where the strongest signal appears. Continue this process to track the wires through the walls.

Integrated Marking Tool for Easy One-Handed Operation

The MS 740’s integrated erasable marker allows easy, one-handed operation. When the target is found, simply push down on the 'mark' button. The pencil marks the surface without interrupting the scan. The MS 740 comes with a pencil pre-installed, and refills in the box.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: What is the scanning depth for the MultiScanner 740?

Answer: The MS 740 scans up to the following depths:

- Stud Scan: ¾ in (19mm) deep.

- DeepScan: 1½ in (38mm).

- Metal Scan: 3 in (76mm).

- AC Scan: 2 in (51 mm).

Question: How can I tell if I’m in DeepScan mode?

Answer: When the MultiScanner 740 is in DeepScan mode, the STUDSCAN indication on the LCD flashes continuously.

Question: How can I be certain the object found behind my wall is a stud when in DeepScan mode?

Answer: The increased sensitivity in DeepScan mode may have located something other than a stud. Studs are equally spaced to either side (12, 16, or 24 in. apart) and typically run from floor to ceiling. To better confirm that what you found is a stud, check for other studs equally spaced to either side 12, 16, or 24 in. apart or for the same stud at several heights directly above and below the first stud indication. A stud reading also measures approximately 1 ½ in. (38 mm) apart from each edge.

Question: The stud finder seems to be detecting more targets than there should be. What am I doing wrong?

Answer: There may be electrical wiring and/or metal or plastic pipes near or touching the back surface of the wall. Switch to Metal Scan mode where, combined with WireWarning detection, pipes and electrical wiring should be detected adequately. You can also check for studs equally spaced to either side (12, 16, or 24 in. apart).

Question: Can I find studs behind lath and plaster construction?

Answer: Yes. Using Metal Scan mode, you can identify a stud behind the lath and plaster wall by locating the pattern of nail or screw heads attaching the wood lath to the studs. The nails or screws should be found in a column when scanning for metal. However, if the plaster has metal mesh reinforcement, MultiScanner 740 may be unable to detect studs through that material.

Question: Can I use this scanner on the exterior of my home?

Answer: No. Zircon StudSensors are designed and recommended for interior use only.

Question: I am having difficulty detecting metal, what can I do to remedy this?

Answer: Recalibrate the tool in another location. The tool could’ve been calibrated over, or close to, a metal object, reducing sensitivity. The metal target could also be too deep; if this is the case scan in both horizontal and vertical directions. Metal sensitivity is increased when metal object is parallel to the sensor, located at the front end of the scanner beneath the cross hairs.

Question: I suspect electrical wires in a certain area when I scan, but why am I not detecting any?

Answer: Wires may be shielded in metal conduit or behind a metallic wall covering. It could also be that the wire is deeper than 2 in. or that the wire may not be live (hot). Try the Metal Scan mode to see if you can find metal, wire, or metal conduit. Always exercise extreme caution when working near electricity.

Question: Is the tool waterproof?

Answer: No. The MultiScanner 740 is splash and water resistant, but not waterproof.

Question: What is the difference between AC Scan and WireWarning detection?

Answer: Most Zircon StudSensors have WireWarning detection that indicates when the tool is in the vicinity of live AC voltage. Tools with the WireWarning detection feature continuously detect hot electrical wires (unshielded) up to 2 inches deep while you are scanning for studs or metal. The WireWarning detection is always on, in all modes, to alert you to the presence of hot, unshielded AC wires behind the wall. Depending on the model, either an LED light or an icon on the screen will appear when live AC voltage is being indicated.

In addition to WireWarning detection, some tools also have a dedicated AC Scan Mode. The difference between WireWarning detection and AC Scan Mode is the user interface. WireWarning detection is indicated by a light or icon that is either on or off. In AC Scan mode the bars on the LCD screen indicate when the tool is moving towards the source of the voltage or away from the source of the voltage. Both WireWarning detection and AC Scan Mode may indicate over a smaller or larger zone around the wire depending on conditions. Both features allow the user to interactively calibrate the sensitivity to AC voltage. If the unit indicates over a large area the user can re-calibrate the unit closer to the source of AC in order to reduce sensitivity so the unit will indicate AC over a smaller zone around the wire.

Question: What can this product do in terms of wire tracing?

Answer: Zircon tools with AC Scan Mode are not full featured wire tracers, however when users are mapping a section of a wall AC Scan Mode can assist them in locating the route a wire takes through that section of the wall.

Question: Where can I get help using my MultiScanner?

Answer: Technical Support is available Toll Free on our Customer Support Number 8:00am – 5:00pm Mon – Fri PST or on the Zircon Website.

Question: Does this come packaged as 2 individual finders, or 1 packaged containing both
Answer: One Amazon package. Two individual packages inside the Amazon package. Each individual package has one magnet.
Question: Have you had any problems with these accidentally finding wires or conduits in the walls
Answer: Wires, no. Metal conduit, yes. However I use it in commercial spaces and it's obvious if it finds conduit. There's power or another receptacle type nearby
Question: Will they work on metal stud with 5/8 level 5 sheetrock
Answer: Yes they will. I use it for that purpose everyday

Black & Decker's Stud Finder is a simple, yet indispensable tool that detects the location of studs up to 3/4-inch thick. This compact, easy-to-use stud finder operates by moving over the surface of the wall. LED lights on the stud finder light-up to accurately indicate the location of studs.

From the Manufacturer

Black & Decker Stud Sensor takes the guesswork out of locating wood studs to hang pictures, install closet shelving, run chair railing and more. Whether you are a pro, do-it-yourselfer or decorator, this Stud Sensor will help you get the job done faster and easier. Stud Sensors detect studs through walls by sensing the differences in wall density between studs and the hollow spaces in your walls. This Stud Sensor has both audible and visual indicators that show when the edge of a stud is located. It is always best to hang shelves, photographs, artwork and other items securely into the studs in your walls. If these items are secured only in the drywall, nails and anchors can come loose under their own weight over time. With the diameter of a stud being less than 1-inch thick and studs being placed either every 16 inches or 24 inches, depending on the construction of your home, it isn't always easy to guesstimate a stud's location. Without a stud sensor you can only guess where studs may be hidden under your walls. This usually results in driving a nail or anchor between the studs in the empty spaces in your walls, leaving holes.

Answer: haven't come across one in my walls yet.

Product features

Zircon StudSensor A100

The SS A100 is a handheld tool dedicated to quickly and efficiently find the edges of studs and alert you of live AC wiring. The A100 comes equipped with 2 scanning modes: StudScan and DeepScan.

Locate Studs and Scan for Live AC Wiring Safely and Efficiently

The Zircon StudSensor A100 makes scanning easy with its newly designed ergonomic grip. The tool's StudScan finds shallower wood or metal studs up to 0.75 in. (19 mm) deep. Slide the Mode Selector Switch to DeepScan Mode. This doubles the scanning depth to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep and allows for increased accuracy on deeper targets.

The A100 also includes WireWarning Detection that automatically operates in StudScan and DeepScan Modes. This safety feature alerts you to the presence of live, unshielded electrical AC wires while scanning for studs.

Before use, always be sure to install a brand new 9V alkaline battery. Zircon stud finders, particularly those with screens, require and consume a great deal of current from batteries. For optimal performance, brand-new, recently purchased alkaline batteries with an extended expiration date, are strongly recommended for use in these tools.

Edge Finding

Before scanning, hold the A100 flat against wall and press the Power Button to calibrate. Be sure not to move the scanner while calibrating. After a short beep sounds, confirming calibration is complete, continue pressing the Power Button and slide the scanner slowly against the surface.

Be sure not to drill at the edge of the stud. Continue to scan the surface until the stud's center is detected.

The easy-to-read screen will alert you as the stud detector approaches the edge of the stud in both scanning modes. Once the edge is detected, the patented arrow-shaped SpotLite Pointer will shine, the translucent base will illuminate, and an audio tone will sound. DO NOT DRILL HERE! Instead, mark the spot in the “V’ marker groove at the head of the tool and continue past the stud. Repeat the process in the opposite direction and mark the opposite edge of the stud. The center of the stud is midway between the two marks.

The center of the stud center is the stud's most secure location. It is critical to drill in the center when mounting heavy objects.

StudScan and DeepScan Modes

Use StudScan Mode to find the edges of wood or metal studs up to 0.75 in. (19 mm) deep.

For best results, always start in StudScan Mode when looking for studs.

If StudScan Mode provides irregular readings the studs might be behind deeper than 0.75 in. (19 mm). Slide the Mode Selector Switch to DeepScan Mode. This doubles the scanning depth to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep and allows for increased accuracy on deeper targets.

Note: WireWarning Detection works in both StudScan and DeepScan Modes. The WireWarning Detection Icon will flash when live, unshielded wires are detected.

WireWarning Detection

Safely Scan in both Modes

WireWarning Detection is a feature that is always on while scanning in StudScan and DeepScan Modes.

It alerts you to the presence of live, unshielded, electrical AC wires up to 2 inches (50 cm) deep.

As you approach an area with live AC voltage, a lightning bolt icon will display on the screen. This the WireWarning Detection Icon. If your scan directly starts over an area with live AC voltage, the WireWarning Detection Icon will flash.

Note: Please turn off the electricity and use extreme caution in areas where live AC voltage is detected before nailing or drilling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Does the StudSensor A100 include a battery?

Answer: No. Zircon stud finders and detectors, particularly those with screens, require and consume a great deal of current from batteries. For optimal performance, a brand-new, recently purchased 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date, is not included but is required to properly power the A100.

Question: I inserted a 9V battery, but the tool doesn't turn on or is giving me strange readings. Is my tool broken?

Answer: Please be sure to use a fresh, brand new 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date. Batteries that may work in a smoke detector or remote control may not have adequate voltage to power the sensing technology in StudSensors.

Question: Does this tool need to be calibrated?

Answer: Yes, as with all Zircon tools, the StudSensor A100 needs to calibrate to the surface before scanning. Calibrating the tool on an empty wall gives the device a chance to measure the wall thickness and material density, as well as register factors like humidity, temperature, and even the minor electric readings from your hand, which all have an impact on the readings from the wall. Calibrating is easy and just takes a second. To calibrate, simply place the unit flat against the surface to be scanned and press the Power Button. When powering the A100 on, all the icons on the screen and the SpotLite Pointing System will briefly flash and the tool will beep. After this occurs, the screen will then clear and, depending on the selected mode, the words "StudScan" or "DeepScan" will remain, indicating that calibration has occurred and the tool is ready to begin scanning. It is important not to move the tool or begin scanning until the calibration process has taken place for the most accurate results.

Question: What is DeepScan Mode?

Answer: Unlike StudScan Mode, which scans through one layer of drywall up to 0.75 in. thick (19 mm), DeepScan Mode scans through 2 layers of drywall up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep. DeepScan Mode is a higher sensitivity scanning mode that should be used when there are extra layers of wallboard or paneling. Extra layers in a wall can make it difficult to find studs in regular StudScan Mode. To minimize false positives and/or finding other objects further behind the wall that may not be a stud, always start your scan in StudScan Mode first.

Question: How can I be certain the objects found behind my wall are studs in DeepScan Mode?

Answer: DeepScan Mode has increased sensitivity so you may have located something other than a stud. Studs are equally spaced to either side (12, 16, or 24 in. apart) and typically run from floor to ceiling. To better confirm that what you found is a stud, check for other studs equally spaced to either side and for the same stud at several heights directly above and below the first stud indication. A stud reading would also measure approximately 1.5 in. (38 mm) apart from each edge. Anything larger or smaller may not be a stud if not near a door or window.

Question: Will this StudSensor A100 locate metal studs?

Answer: Yes, the A100 will locate metal studs in StudScan, DeepScan, and Metal Scan Modes. Since stud finders are looking for a change in density behind drywall, not a particular material, in StudScan and DeepScan Modes the detector will react to metal studs the same as it would for wooden studs. The A100 will locate wood and metal studs up to 0.75 in. (19 mm) deep while DeepScan Mode locates targets up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) deep.

Question: Why does the tool beep and the lights flash when scanning for a stud?

Answer: The tool could've been calibrated over a stud, calibrated on a dense part of the wall, or the back of the unit may have slightly lifted or tilted during the scan. Move the StudSensor A100 over a couple of inches to the left or right, re-calibrate, and start your scan again.

Question: What is WireWarning Detection?

Answer: WireWarning Detection is a feature that is always on while you are scanning in StudScan and DeepScan Modes to alert you to the presence of live, unshielded electrical AC wires up to 2 in. (50 mm) deep. As you approach an area with live AC voltage, a lightning bolt icon will display on the screen. This is the WireWarning Detection Icon. If your scan directly starts over an area with live AC voltage, this icon will flash. PLEASE TURN OFF THE ELECTRICITY AND USE EXTREME CAUTION IN AREAS WHERE LIVE AC VOLTAGE IS DETECTED BEFORE NAILING OR DRILLING.

Question: Why does the area of voltage appear much larger than an actual wire?

Answer: Static charge may develop on drywall, spreading voltage detection as much as 12 in. (30 cm) laterally from each side of an actual wire. To narrow detection, turn the tool off and on again at the edge of where the wire was first detected and repeat the scan.

Question: I suspect electrical wires in a certain area when I scan, but why am I not detecting any?

Answer: Wires may be shielded in metal conduit or behind a metallic wall covering. It could also be that the wire is deeper than 2 in. (50 mm) or that the wire may not be live (hot). Always exercise extreme caution when working near electricity.

Question: Does the A100 work on wood paneling and other wood surfaces?

Answer: The A100 is optimized to scan through standard interior sheetrock / drywall (gypsum) construction. This tool will work on wood, plywood, wood paneling and particle board up to 1.5 in. (38 mm) thick when in DeepScan Mode.

Question: Will the A100 work on textured wall surfaces, acoustic ceilings, or wall paper?

Answer: Yes, the A100 will work on textured surfaces and dried wall paper as long as it does not contain any metallic foil or fibers. For highly textured walls or acoustic ceilings, place or tape a thin piece of cardboard onto the surface to be scanned. Recalibrate and scan over the cardboard in DeepScan Mode.

Question: Can I use this tool to find studs behind carpet?

Answer: No. Zircon tools are designed for hollow interior walls. They will generally work well to find studs or joists through a plywood subfloor, after the carpeting/flooring has been removed.

Question: Will the A100 work on ceramic tile?

Answer: While the StudSensor A100 may be able to scan through ceramic tile in DeepScan mode to locate studs, the many variable layers behind tiled surfaces make it one of the more difficult scanning environments.

Question: Does this StudSensor work on lath and plaster?

Answer: No. Due to irregularities in plaster thickness, this tool is not recommended for use on lath and plaster.

Question: Can I use this tool to scan the outside wall of my house?

Answer: No. Zircon StudSensors are designed and recommended for interior use only.

Question: I'm planning to mount my new flat screen TV to the wall. Will this tool help me?

Answer: Yes. The A100 is ideal for basic home or office projects. The center-finding technology allows you to easily find and mark the center of the stud for secure mounting of TV's and AV equipment, closet or garage shelving, heavy mirrors, light fixtures, coat racks and more.

Question: Is the tool waterproof?

Answer: No. The StudSensor A100 is splash and water resistant, but not waterproof.

Question: What is the difference between magnetic and electronic stud finders?

Answer: Magnetic stud finders are simply magnets that look for anything magnetic behind a wall. Typically, they are advertised to find screws or nails that hold the wall surface to the studs. However, nails often times are not placed in the center of studs, making it difficult to determine where the stud's center is or how wide the stud is.

Electronic stud finders, such as the A100, on the other hand, operate by detecting density changes behind a surface (like a wall) and will clearly and precisely indicate the edges and center of a stud. The center of a stud is the most secure location when mounting anything heavy. For applications like mapping out floor joists, electronic stud finders have an advantage over magnets because they are not attracted to nails holding floor boards to a subfloor, as well as nails in joists.

Question: Does the StudSensor A100 come with a warranty?

Answer: The StudSensor A100 includes limited one year warranty when fulfilled by and shipped from Amazon.

Question: Where can I get help using my StudSensor A100?
