11 best laser detectors
Laser detectors, also known as laser receivers or laser detectors for laser levels, are essential tools used in construction and surveying to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of laser level measurements. These devices work in conjunction with laser levels to assist users in aligning and measuring various construction and layout tasks. Here's what you need to know about laser detectors:
Function: Laser detectors are designed to detect the laser beam emitted by a laser level. They are equipped with sensors that can identify the laser's position and elevation, allowing the user to locate a specific reference point or elevation.
Compatibility: Laser detectors are typically used with rotary laser levels and line laser levels. These levels emit a laser beam that may not be visible to the naked eye over long distances or in bright lighting conditions. Laser detectors help make these laser beams visible and usable.
Use Cases: Laser detectors are commonly used in construction for tasks such as:
- Establishing level and grade lines for foundations and concrete work.
- Setting accurate elevations for walls, ceilings, and suspended ceilings.
- Ensuring proper slope and alignment for tasks like drainage and landscaping.
- Checking and aligning surfaces for tile installation and wall framing.
Audible and Visual Signals: Laser detectors are equipped with both audible and visual indicators to guide the user. When the laser detector detects the laser beam, it emits a sound and typically displays a visual signal, such as LED lights, to indicate the beam's position.
Grade Matching: Some laser detectors are capable of grade matching, allowing users to set and match slopes easily. This is particularly useful in applications like road construction and landscaping.
Mounting Options: Laser detectors can be attached to a mounting rod or bracket, which can be adjusted in height to align with the desired measurement point or elevation.
Accuracy: The accuracy of laser detectors can vary depending on the model and manufacturer but is typically specified in millimeters. Higher-end models tend to offer greater accuracy.
Reception Range: Laser detectors have a reception range, which defines the distance over which they can detect the laser beam. This range varies from model to model but can extend to several hundred feet.
Power Source: Laser detectors are powered by batteries, and some models may have rechargeable options. It's important to ensure the detector has sufficient power for extended use.
Environmental Conditions: Laser detectors are designed to withstand various environmental conditions, including dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. They are built to be rugged and durable for use on construction sites.
Calibration: Periodic calibration is necessary to maintain the accuracy of laser detectors. Manufacturers may provide guidelines on how to calibrate their specific models.
In summary, laser detectors are valuable tools that enhance the functionality of laser levels in construction and surveying applications. They help ensure precise measurements, alignment, and leveling over long distances and in challenging conditions, making them indispensable tools for professionals in these fields.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a Dewalt 18 volt rotary laser. Is this receiver compatible with it |
Answer: | Designed for measurement of moisture content from the surface down to .25” (6.4mm) or .75” (19mm) deep inside wood "The above measurements are conservative. Example, I can place my hand on the opposite side of a 2x4 when taking a reading on the other side and affect the meter reading." FROM THE USER'S MANUAL 1. If the thickness of the piece of wood or other building material is greater than .75 inch (19mm), and you wish to get more of a full thickness rather than a shallow measurement, it is a good idea to take measurements in 3/4” mode on both sides and average the readings. "However, refer to my comment above regarding the 2x4. We have many companies and individuals that use Orions (and our previous MMC models) to measure 1.5 inch thick to 2.0 inch thick material, and are only measuring from one side (face).” 2. To prevent high or inaccurate readings, always have a minimum 1-inch (25mm) air gap underneath the piece of wood you are measuring. During this process make sure your hand is not directly underneath the wood you are measuring. Ron Smith - Wagner Meters Sales Manager |
Question: | Would it work with pulsing line lasers |
Answer: | First, regardless of the meter utilized, in general a meter’s accuracy is somewhat affected by the type and amount of treatment in the wood. Next, the Orion model 930 is well-suited for measuring wood with thicknesses up to 2”. IF there is very little moisture gradient in the thicker pine (3” and above) the depth of readings with the 930 will also represent the overall moisture content of the thicker pieces. To best answer these type of technical questions, we highly recommend you call Wagner Meters so their experts can help with your individual situation. Ron Smith - Wagner Meters |
Question: | Does this receiver go with a Bosch laser |
Answer: | For measuring the moisture in wood that has fairly smooth, flat surfaces at least 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches, one of Wagner’s non-pin Orion-model moisture meters would be fine. If you have rough, rounded surfaces, you may need to use a pin-type moisture meter with longer pins with insulated shafts on a slide hammer cabled to the actual meter. |
Question: | will this work with 3d series laser level |
Answer: | Although the Wagner Meters commitment to customer satisfaction dates back to its inception (the 1960s), the dawn of 2012 brought in a new era. Wagner Meters now offers a standard seven-year warranty policy on all Orion meters as well as the MMC and MMI moisture meters. Effective since January 1, 2012, Wagner Meters has implemented extended warranty protection on these models to ensure that woodworkers, manufacturers, installers, and inspectors can measure and monitor their wood products moisture content (MC) with renewed confidence. |

At the same time, the loudspeaker reports "metal". When the instrument is closest to the metal, a central symbol appears on the display.
Power Cable Measurement
- Press the center button to turn on the detection function, then press the right button to access the metal detection interface.
- Place the instrument on the surface of the detector and move the instrument left and right in the same direction. When the instrument gradually recognizes the power cord, the * cord symbol appears on the screen and gradually increases as the instrument approaches the power cord.
Screen Declaration
A: Magnetic / non-magnetic
B: Depth
C: Central location
Single and Continuous Measurement
- Single measurement: Briefly press the "ON" button to switch on the device. The device automatically switches to the individual measurement interface of the laser and the loudspeaker sends the current measurement mode. Aim the laser at the target to be measured and press the button for single measurement. The measurement result is displayed in the main display area and the loudspeaker announces the current value
- Continuous measurement: Long press the "ON" key to enter the continuous measurement mode. The maximum value (Max) and the minimum value (Min) are displayed in the auxiliary display area.
Area Measurement
- Area measurement: Measure the area of a rectangle. Measure the length and width of the rectangle according to the screen mode. The results are displayed in the main display area.
Single Pythagorean Measurement
- Measure one hypotenuse side and the right angle side according to the Pythagorean theorem principle, and the instrument automatically calculates the length of the other right angle side that is displayed in the main display area. Note: When testing the Pythagorean method theorem, the two measurements mean that the reference point of the measurement must remain unchanged and the line between the two laser points and the three reference points must be a right-angled triangle, otherwise the calculation result differs significantly from the actual results.
Double Pythagorean Measurement
- Similar to the simple Pythagorean measurement, when measuring 2 hypotenuse edges and 1 right-hand edge, it must be ensured that the reference points of 3 measurements remain unchanged and the right-hand edge must be measured perpendicular to the target edge, otherwise the calculated results differ significantly from the actual ones Results.

Product features
Johnson Laser Detectors
When operating lasers outdoors on large jobsites, you typically can't see the beam. Laser detectors become a mandatory accessory to detect beam height and ensure the accuracy of your work.
Detectors must be chosen based on the color of the laser, the type of laser (line vs. rotary), and the style of detector required. Styles include single sided LED, single and dual style LCD, and machine mountable. All of the detectors shown here are for red beam rotary lasers (635/650nm).
Most Johnson Level detectors feature variable audible tones to tell you if you're too high, too low, or on grade. All detectors have a visual indicator to show you high/low/on grade, but the type of indicator varies by model. Read on to choose the perfect detector for your new Johnson laser!
Model #40-6705 LED Display Detector
Accurately detects laser beam (635/650nm) signals from rotary lasers. This detector features:
-LED Display: Three LED's light up to alert on grade / too high / too low.
-Audible Alert: The detector will beep when a laser signal is found but is too high or too low. The LED's will indicate which direction to move the detector to find grade. A solid tone will indicate when the detector is on grade.
-Low Battery Indicator: The detector will perform a battery check at startup and alert you to a low battery or exhausted battery.
-The accuracy of this detector is not adjustable, and is:
= 0.06" for distances < 165'.
= 0.10" for distances > 165'.
Grading
The 40-6715 dual sided display detector's LCD display shows on grade/high/low and lets the operator read either side of the detector for convenience. The detector accuracy can be reduced for rough work like this excavation or increased for fine work such as setting walls or posts.
Excavation / Site Prep
Here the 40-6535 laser is shown paired to the 40-6791 machine mountable detector. Super-strong rare earth magnets secure it, making placement on any steel surface simple. On this skid steer, the contractor located the detector on the boom arm because the boom arm moves roughly 1:1 with the bucket, but some contractors prefer to put it on the bucket directly. The choice is yours; regardless of where you locate it, installation is simple and pairing it with the 40-6792 remote display lets the operator see the display inside the cab.
Checking Floor Height
This contractor was building a bus repair terminal and just finished the exterior block walls. Concrete was coming in the next day, and they were using Johnson Level lasers and detectors to complete one final check of floor height prior to the concrete pour. The floors all had to have a specific slope for drainage, and Johnson Level's dual-slope rotaries and rotary detectors provided a simple way to complete this layout.
