I believe you could simply use one 6" stem but you would have to add the depth of the shade as well as the fixture canopy for the shortest overall length. Our overall length from the ceiling to the bottom of the shade (using a 12" & 6" stem) is 25 1/8". If you subtract the 12" stem from that, 13 1/8" should be your shortest overall length.
