13 best heat lamp bulb
A heat lamp bulb, often referred to as an incandescent heat bulb, is a type of light bulb designed to emit both light and heat. These bulbs are commonly used in various applications where the generation of heat is necessary, such as keeping animals warm in agricultural settings, incubating eggs, providing additional warmth in outdoor spaces, or assisting in specific industrial processes. Here are some key points about heat lamp bulbs:
Design and Construction: Heat lamp bulbs are typically constructed using the same basic principles as traditional incandescent bulbs. They consist of a filament wire inside a glass or quartz envelope filled with inert gases. When electricity passes through the filament, it heats up and produces both light and heat.
Infrared Radiation: The heat produced by heat lamp bulbs is primarily in the form of infrared radiation. This type of radiation is not visible to the human eye but can be felt as warmth when it contacts a surface or object.
Color Temperature: Heat lamp bulbs can vary in color temperature, which is measured in Kelvin (K). Lower color temperatures (around 2700K) produce a warm, yellowish light, while higher color temperatures (above 5000K) produce a cooler, bluish light. For applications where heat is the primary goal, the color temperature may not be a significant consideration.
Wattage: The wattage of a heat lamp bulb determines its heat output and energy consumption. Higher wattage bulbs produce more heat but also consume more electricity. Common wattages for heat lamp bulbs range from 100W to 250W or more.
Applications:
- Agriculture: Heat lamp bulbs are often used in farming to provide warmth to animals, especially young livestock, poultry, and reptiles.
- Food Service: In the food industry, heat lamps are used to keep prepared food warm until it is served to customers.
- Outdoor Heating: Some heat lamp bulbs are designed for outdoor use and can be installed in patio heaters or other outdoor heating devices.
- Industrial Processes: Heat lamp bulbs are used in various industrial applications, including curing paints and coatings, drying processes, and maintaining specific temperature conditions.
Safety Considerations: When using heat lamp bulbs, it's crucial to follow safety guidelines and ensure that the bulbs are installed correctly. These bulbs can become very hot, and improper use can lead to fire hazards or burns.
Lifespan: The lifespan of a heat lamp bulb can vary depending on its quality and usage. They typically have a shorter lifespan compared to some other types of bulbs, such as LED or CFL bulbs.
Replacement: When replacing a heat lamp bulb, it's essential to choose a bulb with the appropriate wattage and fit for your specific application. Consult the manufacturer's guidelines or the product label for compatibility information.
In summary, heat lamp bulbs are specialized incandescent bulbs designed to emit both light and heat, primarily in the form of infrared radiation. They find applications in agriculture, food service, outdoor heating, and various industrial processes where controlled heat generation is required. It's crucial to use them safely and follow recommended wattage and installation guidelines for specific applications.

User questions & answers
Question: | can this bulb ne used to heat a surface to 130°f? i have alizard who needs surface temps that high |
Answer: | No this bulb does not emit the UVA or UVB rays that reptiles require for vitamin D and other health needs. For reptile heat only you need the Red bulb which emits as much heat but not the blinding light. |
Question: | I want ot buy 1000 units do you have that quantity? can you contact me directly |
Answer: | i am a private buyer only needing one and purchased it on amazon. |
Question: | I want to replace my garage lightbulb with this. Will i feel the heat in a cold garage if the light is 2 feet over my head |
Answer: | An Infra red lamp will heat an object within the beam spread of the bulb. (within reason) If you have an 8 ft. ceiling in your garage and use a standard medium base ceramic light bulb holder from Lowes or Home Depot (couple bucks), you will feel warmth directly under the lamp. Make sure you buy a 250 watt white light lamp and not the red heat lamps. If this is over a small workbench, I think you'll like it but your toes will still be cold. (ha) |
Question: | How bright is this bulb when not in heating mode |
Answer: | There is no non-heating mode that I know about. I did switch from the clear bulbs to red ones since the light was too bright. If you want bright light versus dimmer red then that shouldn't be a problem. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for my outdoor sulcata tortoise? he has a rancho/hut usually use a red heat bulb |
Answer: | I think it will. It emits infrared heat but from elements rather than a bulb. They come in several different sizes so, depending on how cold it gets in your area, you can use a high wattage or low wattage. I live in Colorado and use it in my chicken coop. I use the large one and it cranks out about the same amount of heat that the bulb does. The only glitch is you don't know if it's working or not but I have had mine for a couple years with no problems. Of course, I only use it in the winter but I used to go through several bulbs each winter. |
Question: | Does this put off any light, even red light |
Answer: | This kind of heater does no light emitted,it would not disturb normal sleeping habits of reptiles. |
Question: | I got one from here, how long does it take to heat up |
Answer: | Heat lamp immediately produces heat. I have 20 gallon turrarium and this lamp wouldn’t warm it up more than low 80’s with my house around 70 degrees. I replaced this lamp with a 150w which works way better. |
Question: | would this be ok with a Crested gecko? my room is around 45 to 50 degrees |
Answer: | This power is just right for the temperature you need. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this inside my chicken coop? we have baby chicks and want to use inside small chicken coop (separate from the hens |
Answer: | Yes, it can be used in a small coop, that’s how I used it. I also had a temperature gauge to ensure the temperature was accurate, consistent and appropriate for the chicks during their growth process. I liked the ceramic heat lamp because it didn’t produce light at night time. I noticed the chicks slept through the night thoroughly, which I felt was really important. Our chicks are now at nine weeks, outside and doing really well. I may use the heat lamp again this winter in their outside coop if we get some severe cold. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | China |
Question: | How far does the heat reach i have 36×18×36 enclosure |
Answer: | From a distance of 12 inches you will have about an 11 inch radius area hovering at about 90°. The farther away the less heat, and the closer the more heat, etc. I have two over a 75 gallon tank and they do great. Make sure you know what temperatures your creature should be at and always remember they don’t have to be perfect. Reptiles especially can adapt to many environments so the best thing to do is make sure that you keep it consistent! Good luck, and provide the best home you possibly can for your creatures!! |
Question: | will this fit a 5.5 inch heat lamp |

Product description
The basic design of the incandescent lamp has not changed much since the late 1800s, when Thomas Alva Edison successfully produced the fist operational electric light bulb. The filament inside an incandescent lamp must be protected so that oxygen does not reach it and cause it to evaporate on contact. Most incandescent lamps are either vacuum-sealed or gas-filled. Incandescent lamp filaments are made of tungsten. Tungsten is a metal that can operate at very high temperatures without evaporating too quickly an resulting in early lamp failure. Incandescent filaments only convert about 10 percent of the energy used into visible light, so it is necessary to use a material that can withstand extremely high temperatures. Most lamps use a coiled filament design, which has been found to be stronger and deliver better performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this sit on glass lid facing down? Will the heat shatter glass |
Answer: | Yes, it can be placed on a glass surface No, glass doesn't shatter because of heat. Glass WILL shatter because of RAPID, RADICAL temperature changes I.E. VERY COLD glass exposed to hot or boiling liquid, and vice versa. Heated/Cooled SLOWLY, will not break glass. It WILL however, reduce the amount of heat transfer slightly, due to the absorption of heat by the glass plate. |
Question: | can this be clamped to a wire cage? I have a desert tortoise and I live in Az and he is a big so I cant easily put him in a tank |
Answer: | Yes, but you probably will need to thread a dowel or attach a piece of wood to the side of the wire cage and clamp the lamp to that so it hangs over the cage. Good luck! :-) |
Question: | What type of bulb shoud I buy for this lamp? I have an aquatic turtle |
Answer: | i bought this one for mine http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Reptile-Basking-Watts/dp/B0002DIX5O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411648253&sr=8-1&keywords=repti+basking+spot+lamp+50w . i am using a 50w because my tank is pretty full to the top. My bulbs have lasted almost a year and im still on the first one. I hope this helps |
Question: | Is ti compatible for all bulbs |
Answer: | This lamp will not work with all bulbs. Several things you need to do to determine compatibility: 1) Wattage. This lamp comes in 3 sizes. The maximum wattages are: 5.5" rated up to 75 watts 8.5" rated up to 150 watts 10" rated up to 250 watts 2) Bulb base. This lamp appears to have an E26 base. Most light bulbs in the US have an E26 base. 3) Bulb shape and size. This lamp is made for R and BR shape bulbs. For example, R20 bulbs will work with this lamp. The number after the R or BR is the maximum diameter of the bulb in eights of an inch. An R20 bulb is 20/8 or 2.5 inches. The sizes of this lamp (5.5", 8.5", 10") correspond to maximum supported bulb diameter. Therefore, an R20 bulb will work with all sizes of this lamp. An R50 bulb will work with some but not all sizes of this lamp. 4) Voltage. You don't really need to look at this. As the product images show, this lamp supports up to 250 V, which will work in pretty much any country (for household usage). You will still have to figure out if your bulb is compatible with your wall socket though. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it emit Far or Near infra red light? Or both |
Answer: | Neither. I called Phillips and the rep. told me it's not infrared. All these red lights on Amazon are not infrared. He pointed me towards this one https://www.amazon.com/Philips-145516-175-watt-PAR38-Clear/dp/B002CYW0AA |
Question: | What wavelength does this bulb emit |
Answer: | Heat lamps do not output a specific wavelength. They output everything from red at 650nm to 1100nm infrared. If you google incandescent heat lamp then click on images, you will see what the spectrum looks like. Hope that helps. |
Question: | why do you say it's infrared, when some say it is not, but it's just red color? any proof that it's actual infrared spectrum |
Answer: | A lot of ignorant comments.. it outputs in both infrared and visible light. Most of the output is in fact infrared. Infrared is any heat you feel radiating from the light at a distance. The heat you feel is infrared energy. Infrared = thermal light. The bulb also puts out some visible light in the red color spectrum so it’s not 100% infrared. (Infra-red means below red in the light spectrum.. which is not visible) |
Question: | Is this a Teflon-coated bulb |
Answer: | I called the Philips Company and asked specifically about this model bulb.I was informed that the company puts a silicon coating on some of their bulbs and that this bulb specifically has has no coating on it.There is a bulb that does have a coating, and it's number 159327.UPDATE:The bulb that I received appears to have a coating on it. Two reasons why:The coating can be smelled after it has run for a few minutes. When comparing with three other bulbs that do not have a coating on it, there is an mark that appears on the bulb I received that is missing on the other bulbs.comparison photo called philips-amazon-415836-comparison.jpg - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3EYYHNgU811clRneUk0dEZ3OFk/view?usp=sharing The box I received from this product has this information on it820915Ordering Code:250R40/HR 120V 4/1 TPI bought these bulbs from Home Depot, and they also had coating on them. For the use of an infrared sauna, any coating is not optimal. In the case of a bathroom, a coating would likely be optimal. |
