Answer: I purchased it specifically to store for survival/emergency ... but being cautious I thought I would test before storing. This filter didn't even eliminate rust from water that my wife had been using for canning. I tried multiple time thinking it would require some break in period or whatever ... nope. I returned ... NO WAY would I recommend this product for survival fitler.

The filter is placed in tree bottom of the upper bucket. The upper bucket is for dirty water and gravity drives it through the filter, then the cleaned water drips from the bottom of the upper bucket, through the hole in the lid and into the lower bucket where it's stored.

Answer: You use a scotch brite to refresh the filter. Simply let the filter dry COMPLETELY, the use the scotch brite to rub the outside. You don't need a lot of elbow grease. You will notice "dust" coming off it when you rub it. I use my vacuum hose beside where I am cleaning it. Rinse the filter with clean water and it's ready for another use. I have had mine for many months and my well water is terrible. I use one of these as a first filter, and then run it through another clean filter. Hope this helps.
