Answer:	I've never had any issues with them retracting or coming loose. You need to push on the red button and push down on the black lever to release the tension first, then they will retract. These are great straps. They don't get tangled or cluttered. Easy to use and don't take up too much space for storage.

HOW TO USE YOUR NO-RATCHETING AUTORETRACT CARGO TIE DOWN STRAPS

Step 1: Use the included hardware to install your strap! One S hook makes the pre-drilled bolting hole easy to access. See hardware dimensions below.

Step 2: Unlock the strap. It's as easy as PRESSing the red button on the handle and placing the lever under the tab.

Step 3: Pull the hook as far out as you need to reach your tie-down anchor spot.

Step 4: Note the dimensions of this strap. The durable polyester webbing is 1" wide and extends up to 6 feet long.

Step 5: When the S hook is safely in the anchor spot, PRESS the red button to tighten it, since that will retract the strap webbing. Then lift the ergonomic handle to place the tab above the lever; now it's locked. NO RATCHETING NECESSARY! In fact, don't bother even lifting the handle. Just press the button.

Step 6: Ready to unload your cargo? Unhook the S hook. Then PRESS the red button while cradling the strap and your strap will retract smoothly into the ratchet housing. No mess, no fuss!

Question:	Is there a minimun length that needs to be out for these to work properly
Answer:	Just enough that you can ratchet it tight. I use mine at about 2 feet to tie down my commercial zero turn mower. I also removed the tail pieces & bolted the ratchets directly to the frame rail on my trailer. There is a hole already in the ratchet for d oing that - you just have to provide your own properly sized bolt. These things work really well & by having them bolted to the trailer, you don't have to worry about putting them up & getting them out, or worse yet, forgetting to put them up & losing them.
Question:	If i use them as boat tansom and bolt them on the boat trailer will the ratchet rust over time

Question:	What type of metal are they made of? the question is are they going to rust
Answer:	They are steel. Mine are not rusting yet. I'm sure that if exposed to road salt and moisture they will corrode. The mechanism that rolls up the strap is covered but doesn't appear to be sealed. Corrosive environments may cause that to stop functioning over time. I am very happy with these straps though. For 9 months they have worked well for me but I only use them a couple times a month.
Question:	First time I used had trouble getting them to release once they were tight. Is there a secret
Answer:	Ours works as described ("Push the red button to release"). It is worth noting that the tighter you tighten any ratcheting tie-down, the more force is required to release. That seems to be generally true of most cam-lock devices. A vice-grips is a good example. We have owned the last three generations of Erickson versions of this device. Each as been a marked improvement on the previous. This is their best effort yet. Hope you enjoy yours as much as we enjoy ours.

Answer:	I don't know. I never disassembled mine to find out. I just keep mine sprayed down with WD40. Feel free to disassemble yours and get back to us on your findings

Answer:	Sorry it took so long to reply....................that would be the strap length, mine measures 48 !/2" from the center of the mounting hole to the inside of the hook.

Answer:	If I remember right it was 1/2 inch.
Question:	Do these auto retract like a seatbelt or do they require winding by hand
Answer:	First you have to push the center button and push the ratchet handle all the way in to unlock it. When you push the button in the center of the handle they auto retract on the spool. I have had mine on for almost a year now and use in both fresh and salt water and they work great! I will always have this type of transom strap from now on.

Answer:	It’s a nylon seatbelt type of strapping, and the ratchet is steel. I have mine on an open deck trailer and have no problems with water.

Answer:	There is Not a weather protection cover. That said, my original Cargo Buckles were well Over 15 years old before replacing. Two were on the front side of trailer so they caught All the schmegg. A little lube after a rinse and good to go. 2 of the original 4 are still useable. Awesome product

Answer:	You can purchase a flat strap with eyes at harbor freight and hook it between the cargo straps. Works great.

Answer:	the strap can take 3000 lb.s but in excess of 1000 lb.s will break the retractable spring mechanism .

Answer:	Hello, no there is not a locking mechanism to make it a shorter strap. I believe if they did that the load would be to great and break the mechanical parts. I have three of these and they work great!
