It would also depend on whether you’re putting them into a stud or just drywall…on average studs are 16” apart in modern construction. |

On the small size bracket an 8 inch deep shelf should be just fine, both sides of the bracket are 6 inches long so any weight should be balanced. Make sure to install the brackets into a stud and displace weight equally and away from the very edge of the shelf to prevent any excess pressure from unbalanced weight distribution. | Answer: | They will be about 18% stronger mounted upside-down. Think of the bracket as a lever, and consider the leverage the farthest screw from the fulcrum has on the shelf. The fulcrum of the lever is different in each configuration. "Upside-down," the fulcrum is the bracket's bend, where it touches the wall, and "right-side-up," the fulcrum is the tip of the short arm of the bracket. Look at the distance from the fulcrum to the farthest screw from the fulcrum in each configuration. Measuring the picture of the brackets, I get 40 mm for the upside-down configuration and 34 mm for right-side-up. The farthest screw has 1.18 times the leverage upside-down as it has right-side-up. The nearest screw to the fulcrum is much less significant in each case. Take out the farthest screw, and the shelf will pull the nearest screw out of the wall easily. |

| Answer: | Well, In terms of aesthetics, 10 inches and 2 inches would be the maximum width and thickness recommended. I haven't been use 12 inches width before, maybe you could try it. However, if your board is long and need it carry more stuffs, I would like to share you a fantastic way to install it, that is you could Use 4 brackets (two pairs) in total, and make one pair upwards installed(picture5), then another pair make it downwards installed(picture4) in the middle of the board or the right point you think. Trust me, you would found that was marvelous! Hope this help. |

What you need to consider more is how you are going to mount them.
