14 best wood glues

Wood glue is a type of adhesive specifically designed for bonding wood materials together. It is a crucial tool in woodworking and various DIY projects where a strong and durable bond is required. Here's what you should know about wood glue:

  1. Types of Wood Glue:

    • PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) Glue: PVA glue is the most common type of wood glue and is available in various formulations, including standard, water-resistant, and waterproof. It dries clear and is easy to sand, making it suitable for a wide range of woodworking applications.
    • Aliphatic Resin (Yellow Glue): This type of wood glue is known for its strong bond and resistance to heat and moisture. It's often used for woodworking projects that require extra durability.
    • Polyurethane Glue: Polyurethane glue is waterproof and offers excellent bonding strength, making it ideal for outdoor projects and applications where the bond will be exposed to moisture or extreme conditions.
    • Epoxy: Epoxy adhesives are versatile and offer very strong bonds. They consist of two components that must be mixed before application and are often used for bonding dissimilar materials.
    • Cyanoacrylate (CA) Glue: CA glue, often referred to as "super glue," is a fast-setting adhesive suitable for smaller woodworking tasks and for bonding wood to other materials like plastic or metal.
  2. Bond Strength:

    • Wood glue creates strong bonds that can withstand considerable stress, making it suitable for various woodworking projects, including furniture, cabinetry, and structural applications.
  3. Drying Time:

    • The drying time of wood glue varies depending on the type and brand. Some glues set quickly, while others require more time. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific glue you are using.
  4. Preparation and Application:

    • Proper surface preparation is essential for a strong bond.Ensure that the wood surfaces are clean, dry, and free from any contaminants like dust or oils.
    • Apply an even layer of glue to both surfaces to be bonded.
    • Join the pieces together and clamp them firmly to allow the glue to cure. The clamping time and pressure requirements will depend on the type of wood glue used.
  5. Cleanup:

    • Most wood glues can be cleaned up with water while they are still wet. Once dry, excess glue can be removed by sanding or scraping.
  6. Safety:

    • Wood glues are generally safe to use, but it's essential to follow safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Some glues may emit fumes, so use them in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate protective gear as needed.
  7. Storage:

    • Store wood glue in a cool, dry place, and keep the cap tightly sealed to prevent it from drying out. Proper storage extends the shelf life of the glue.

In summary, wood glue is a versatile adhesive used in woodworking and DIY projects to create strong and durable bonds between wooden surfaces. Choosing the right type of wood glue for your specific project and following proper application techniques will ensure successful and long-lasting results.

Question: Could I use this to install a chair rail to a wall? TIA
Answer: Dimensions: 9.0 " H x 3.0 " W (or Diameter on bottom) NOTE: This bottle is not a good fit in my mesh pockets on my daypack. But its great for carrying water and the narrow mouth keeps the fluid from splashing all over when sipping.

User questions & answers

Question: On E7310's product description, it says ANSI Type 1 waterproof. It is not soluble in water after dry. right
Answer: I've never glued drywall and prefer to use the recommended placement of it using drywall screws or nails. This has a drying time when using it. Do not know how to stabilize the drywall in place if you were to glue it. Although I think it would hold, once dry, I wouldn't recommend it.
Question: Hi, I'm trying to glue a mirrow to the hutch part of my desk. Do you think this will work and not fall apart on me
Answer: This product has an average shelf life of two years if unopened.
Question: What is the lowest temperature the glue can set at
Answer: You will still need nails to hit the wall joists. The glue will work, but it will eventually pull the layer of paint or Sheetrock paper from the wall. Glue is mainly used in corners where molding like chair rails meet each other.
Question: Is this pet friendly
Answer: This is very good glue, but I do not know if it will hold under water. I use this glue for exterior wood projects and I am satisfied for my use.

Answer: Just be sure to allow glue to cure before exposing piece to water (or severe moisture)!!!!!!
Question: Is this glue apprpriate for gluing a bottom chair brace intp the chair leg
Answer: This is a poor choice for gluing glass to anything . I'd use a silicon caulk / glue instead .
Question: How can I get the glue out of the bottle and it new
Answer: Below 50 degrees any PVA (polyvinyl acetate/yellow or white glue) doesn't develop as strong a bond and takes days to set. As this product contains a certain amount of water, it is suggested that your glue be set in a mild temperature.
Question: This advertisement says $10 for 36 ounce bottle? I'm buying this now incase it was a mistake and grabbing that deal
Answer: I assume you mean "is it safe for pets?" Although ingestion should be avoided and a poison center or vet should be called as a precaution, This glue is indeed considered non-toxic and therefore generally safe for pets. In regards to wood glue that is unsafe for pets; Be sure to avoid glues that foam as they dry, like Gorilla Glue and other polyurethane glues (avoid any glue that contains diphenylmethane diisocyanate - also known as MDI - as the active ingredient). User questions & answers

Question: I want to affix a small wooden piece of a kitchen drawer Will this work
Answer: It's better to glue your parts together before painting. That way you will get a much better bonding of parts together. Than too you can cover up your joint with paint better and make it not so noticeable.
Question: What’s with the pricing? This is not $.46/oz
Answer: I used the Gorilla Wood glue in wood only, for a piece of a wood fence that broke off. It is out in the elements and has held nicely. For concrete you might want to try the all purpose gorilla glue as it is able to form a bond with many other types of material
Question: Can I use it to repair floating wood floor
Answer: If you can use screws to attach metal and wood, it will be better ...... I don't think the glue will work with metal, unless is Gorilla Glue, 100% water proof. Which you can use it to almost everything, metal, wood, ceramic, plastic etc.
Question: I have a door that is stained that I want to put a decorative stained wood slat overlay on, will this hold the overlay securely
Answer: No the original is a different formula that thing will expand a lot. This is wood glue for working with with wood. I didn't notice any of the glue expanding. It stays in the same place when it dries. It gives you about 5 mins of working time before it begins to harden.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this Item the bottle only, I assume it does not include the glue
Answer: Yes.
Question: Do the bottles come with the cap lanyard
Answer: 30-45 min at 60+ degrees is fine.
Question: Is there a warranty for this? Mine has stopped working
Answer: Foregone 3 is safe for "indirect use" on food items and is F.D.A. Approved. I assume "direct use" means putting it on a hot dog like it's mustard (edible)? The only "glues" I know like that would be direct use would be gelatin and a flour/water mix; they were used back in the day, with limited success. I know firebird 3 has been used in millions of cutting boards without any reported ill effects. Hope this helps.
Question: Is the Gluebot made from dead horses
Answer: Good question.. I only use Type III. Mostly on raw wood (unfinished) I have used it on pieces of furniture that have been finished. Discovered no problems. Clean up with shop rag, slightly damp.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the mixed epoxy be injected with a syringe to ensure it fills a deep screw hole? Need to make sure the hole is filled in order to drill a new hole
Answer: You can certainly try. I am not sure it will be thin enough to fit in a syringe. I would use the original JB Weld (8265S) rather than the Wood Weld. It can be drilled and tapped and is the strongest product we have. Thanks JB Weld support
Question: Can I use this to repair chair legs that my dog chewed ver badly or should I use regular wood filler
Answer: This is much stronger than wood filler, you can only work with a little at a time though, it dries very quickly so I suppose it depends how many repairs you need to make. I would probably still use J-B Weld, the finished repairs will be much stronger. Don't know what sort of finish you want to use afterwards that would be a factor too. If you are painting over the repairs it will be great for that.
Question: can one drill and srew into it
Answer: Yes, but I would always drill a pilot hole before screwing in a wood or sheet metal screw,
Question: What is highest temperature a cured joint can withstand
Answer: It's made for wood, so if wood burns then that is the highest temperature it can withstand.

User questions & answers

Question: Would this work on gluing suede or other fabrics to wood
Answer: I don't build Bows but I know of people that do and they use it. I use it in woodworking and if it's not an oily wood and you have tight joints, the glue is stronger than the wood it holds. you can also ask the bond company them selfs; I have written to them about questions and within a day or two have heard back from them.
Question: is this glue good for gluing the leg of a table
Answer: Yes. Is is a "type 1 water proof glue"......It IS NOT an epoxy. It is not for sheathing planking ..No glue ever made is "water proof" "for below the waterline " ..glue joints, any/all glue joints should not be "continuously exposed" to water. The dried/cured glue should reside in clamped tight joints and should be covered with layers of caulking and hard enamel paint, or alternaltively, sheathed in epoxy resin...Titebond 3 is an excellent glue for boat building ..Before anyone builds a boat and gets in it their woodworking (and reading comprehension) skills should be up to par
Question: Can this glue adhere beads to wood
Answer: I don't know why you would want to keep a jar of glue 5-10 years. I would purchase smaller quantities on a "use as needed" basis. However, if you keep it in a moderate, non freezing temperature, well sealed, it would probably be ok for a few years. I have found most glues I have forgotten on the back shelf to be ready to be thrown away. I would not take the chance of using a 10 yr. old glue.
Question: Am filling a hole with wood to hold a hinge. current screw doesn't grab anymore. Is this strong enough
Answer: In my experience, absolutely. Water-resistant and really strung. I have used it for 25+ years for all sorts of wood projects including 10-12 cutting boards. FYI, my Sealy Mattress plant used Franklin to assemble box spring frames along with staples and we did not have wood separation at the joints.
