13 best paintable wood fillers
Paintable wood fillers are versatile products used in woodworking and home improvement projects to fill gaps, cracks, holes, and imperfections in wooden surfaces before painting or finishing. These fillers are specifically designed to accept paint, stain, or varnish, allowing you to seamlessly blend them with the surrounding wood. Here are some key points about paintable wood fillers:
Purpose: Paintable wood fillers are used to repair and prepare wooden surfaces for finishing. They are commonly employed for tasks such as repairing damaged furniture, filling nail holes in trim and molding, patching cracks in wooden walls or ceilings, and smoothing out imperfections in wood surfaces.
Composition: These fillers are typically made from a combination of materials like wood fibers, gypsum, calcium carbonate, and bonding agents such as latex or acrylic. The exact composition may vary between different brands and types of wood fillers.
Versatility: Paintable wood fillers come in various formulations, allowing them to be used for both interior and exterior applications. Some are specifically designed for outdoor use and are resistant to moisture and weather.
Application: Applying paintable wood filler is a straightforward process:
- Clean the area to be repaired, removing any loose or damaged wood.
- Scoop out a small amount of filler and press it into the gap or hole, overfilling slightly.
- Use a putty knife or a scraper to level the filler with the surrounding surface, ensuring a smooth finish.
- Allow the filler to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions, which may vary depending on the type of filler and the depth of the repair.
- Sand the filled area until it is smooth and flush with the surrounding wood.
- Prime and paint the repaired surface to match the rest of the wood.
Drying Time: Drying times can vary, but most paintable wood fillers dry relatively quickly, often within a few hours. However, for larger or deeper repairs, it may take longer to fully cure.Always follow the manufacturer's recommended drying times.
Painting: Once the filler is dry and sanded smooth, it is ready for painting. You can use the same type of paint that you plan to use on the surrounding wood. The filler should accept the paint and blend in seamlessly.
Stain and Varnish: If you prefer to stain or varnish the wood rather than paint it, make sure to choose a paintable wood filler that is compatible with staining. Some wood fillers are specifically labeled as stainable.
Cleanup: Clean tools and equipment with water if the wood filler is water-based or with the recommended solvent if it is solvent-based.
Storage: Properly seal the container of wood filler to prevent it from drying out between uses.
Paintable wood fillers are valuable for achieving a professional and polished finish on woodworking projects and home repairs. They offer an effective solution for addressing imperfections and damage in wooden surfaces while ensuring that the repairs are visually seamless once painted or finished.

Answer: | The white will show...I don't recommend it for what you need. Good luck! |
Question: | I bought a container about two years ago, and its a little stiff. can it be thined out to make it softer. what can i thin it with. thank you |

Question: | do i have to mix the entire container at once |

Question: | Why can't I get it out of the tube |
Answer: | It will harden with age, just sitting on your shelf. Or it might have come to you from old stock. Once the tube is opened, it will dry out and harden quickly. Probably need to get a new container. |
Question: | Can I drill into hardened mini wax wood filler and re-screw a hinge |
Answer: | Yes, you can. When filling larger holes: you can speed up the drying process by stuffing part of the gap with a small cutoff piece of wood. Make sure to overfill the area, that way it will sand to a straight, smooth finish |
Question: | What is difference or recommended use regarding wood filler and two part epoxy |
Answer: | You must make your questions clearer. MinWax Wood Filler when mixed with epoxy is an excellent product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could this be used to fill a crack in a table. It's the whole length of the table and wide enough for water to spill to the ground through it |
Answer: | I would use a good wood putty that is not porous in place of this. |
Question: | would this fix nail holes that are striped where hidges hold door? does it dry hard |
Answer: | Yes, if you do it right. Any good wood glue or wood filler can be put in a stripped wood screw hole, and the screw pushed into the wet filler, but be careful -- once the filler sets up, you won't be able to tighten or remove the screw. Add a toothpick or 2 if the hole is really loose, just so the screw will stay in place while drying. |
Question: | Can this be used on top of chalk paint |
Answer: | This product is used to repair interior wood holes and gouges. Loose paint and wood chunks should be removed before application. |
Question: | Can it be used to fill cracks or holes in the fresh wood stump |
Answer: | This wood filler is designed for filling holes and gouges in wood. Note that it is non-structural, so it should not be subject to critical stress. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What does "This is an aftermarket of generic part" mean? Is this fake |
Answer: | The product I received wasn't "fake". It works just fine. It's wood filler. You can buy the exact same product in the hardware store, same packaging and everything. |
Question: | Would this protect against carpenter bees |
Answer: | This is intended mostly for filling small holes, so if it is the wood they are after, you would not be covering enough to protect it from them. |
Question: | Cover over nail head metal |
Answer: | Yes this will cover that for nail heads as well |
Question: | Could I use this to fill in a screw hole that is too big and rescrew in that area |
Answer: | Yes, it dries to a hard consistency. I believe that would work. You can also put some pieces of toothpick in with the screw, as you drill it in, to hold it in place. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If you can reconstitute this product with water, then doesn't that mean the repair applied to your job cannot be cleaned with water |
Answer: | If you repair, stain/paint and seal the wood, as a *good* repair SHOULD be done, then there should be no problem. If the product in the jar is a bit dry and one adds water to reconstitute, it’s not the same as if one has filled gouges or cracks... let the product dry and cure... THEN cleaned with water. Fillers are a different creature once they cure; especially if painted/stained/sealed. There’s a big difference between the two circumstances. |
Question: | Can you use this to fill in permanent gaps between my old school farm house wood boards on floor |
Answer: | It's a putty for small projects like fixing a chip, or grain filling the surface of wood before a finish. It's not a building material. has no structural properties. |
Question: | Does this dry hard and is it sandable |
Answer: | Yes, and yes. It dries very hard and is easily sanded. |
Question: | what material are these made from |
Answer: | It's made from calcium carbonate and assorted binders. |

FAQs
Q: Do I need to match the filler to the color of the wood if I plan to stain the wood?
A: GoodFilla is designed to accept stain similarly to wood. However, the stain needs to be darker than the filler. If you are using a light stain, match the filler to the color of the wood.
Q: How do I make a custom color with the base/neutral?
A: A liquid or powdered universal tint or dye is ideal. You can also use paints, food dyes, or stains to tint the filler to your desired color. Results will vary depending on the pigment load. Always test by applying the final finish over the dried filler.
Q: Can you use the filler outside?
A: Yes. Mix with a water-based weather-proof glue. For extra protection, be sure the area is coated/sealed with a clear coat.
Q: Can I mix wood flour into the filler?
A: Yes. Test the results and color by applying finish to the dry, sanded filler.

User questions & answers
Question: | Which sandpaper grit should I use to smooth it out |
Answer: | I used this to fill in holes caused by woodpeckers. I believe last summer I used a medium fine grit. Doesn't take much to smooth it out. |
Question: | Why is mine so watery |
Answer: | Did u "work" the tube (with lid on work up & down because sometimes it separates a little from sitting). If that doesn't work then return it for new 1. Should be kind of a thick toothpaste consistency. |
Question: | Can this be used under acrylic paints |
Answer: | I use latex paint over so why not acrylic too |
Question: | I am looking to fix the door hinges of a ikea pax wardrobe with a stripped the screw hole. doors are heavy and can i apply this and screw it after |
Answer: | Use glue and a wooden matchstick. Put wood glue in the stripped hole. Insert the matchstick and let dry. Cut the matchstick flush with the surface and drill a new hole. Larger holes use multiple matchsticks or slivers of wood |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone have success filling chips on hard wood floors and success staining this stuff |
Answer: | I've done it successfully several times. I've had to mix a little wood glue with the filler each time and make more than one application since there is shrinkage as the mixture drys. Then I've roughed it up a bit with fine sandpaper and applied stain or varnish stain. Takes some care and practice. |
Question: | Why isn't the color of the filler marked on the package??? Very not friendly!!! Color is everything with filler |
Answer: | It's a WOOD filler. You paint or stain afterward. |
Question: | Could it be used to fill in shower grout lines and Rust-Oleum used to refinish without grout lines |
Answer: | We do not recommend using this product to fill in shower grout lines. We apologize for the inconvenience. |
Question: | Is this product dry powder or premixed |
Answer: | Hello, this was premixed and not just dry powder. As a "do it yourself senior of 87 (!)", I found it really excellent for what I needed for 2 medium sized jobs. It filled the holes and dried nicely. I bought it originally on a recommendation of a local timber yard and then bought another box from Amazon. If you do not use it all at once I found it useful to push it down off the sides of the box, and cover it with a bit of plastic very loosely on the top of the mixture, hardly touching. June. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a recommended temperature range for applying this product |
Answer: | Yes ideally you want to apply where your temp is 72 degrees and 50% humidity. You can apply it between 65 -85 degrees. Any thing outside of that will affect dry and cure time. |
Question: | Can I let the final Aqua coat layer stand two weeks before painting |
Answer: | Yes you can let it dry for an unlimited time before applying primer and paint. Just make sure you lightly sand with 320 right before you start applying your primer. |
Question: | what if the cabinets have already been painted? Should I sand them all the way down Or will a light sanding work |
Answer: | If you have previously painted your cabinets you will need to let them fully cure [as per the manufacturers guidelines]. Not dry but cure. At that point you will lightly scuff sand with 220 to give it some tooth so the grain filler has something to stick to. After scuff sanding you can blow off the dust or use a cotton rag. Do not use tack cloths as they have oils and waxes in them and will repel the grain filler. Then apply 1-2 coats of grain filler. 1 coat of primer and 1-2 coats of paint. Always try your complete planned processes on the front of a drawer first. |
Question: | Can I use this on old cabinets installed in 1972? Also, can I use it on the inside of the cabinet or is it just for the outer doors |
Answer: | Yes. Inside or outer surface, wherever you have wood grain that you want to make smooth. I used Aqua Coat on the outside of oak cabinets and both sides of the doors and drawer fronts. The outside of the doors needed 3 coats with light sanding (220) between coats. It was labor intensive for the 22 cabinets I painted but well worth the time and effort. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do this product work with laminate kitchen cabinets?! I want to fill in the 70s door designs and make it flat; I’ll than paint over it |
Answer: | This product is used to repair holes, dents, scratches, and defects on wood, wallboard, molding or painted surface. |
Question: | What color is it |
Answer: | This wood filler is color beige. |
Question: | What color does it dry |
Answer: | Same color as when it's wet, tan or light wood color |
Question: | Is this shapable like a putty or is this more of a liquid |
Answer: | It is shapable like a putty. It doesn't dry so quick so have to work real fast with it. It doesn't take a long time either though once you've applied it for it to dry enough to sand it although I try to leave it drying overnight. It's one of the best wood fillers on the market in my opinion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this product help minimize the grain on oak cabinets before priming and painting |
Answer: | Yes. But why paint over oak cabinets and hide the grain? |
Question: | Is this putty easily sandable? Not harder than the wood itself (maple, in my situation |
Answer: | Yes it is easy to sand. I have used a lot of wood-fillers over the years, but Famowood is by far the best. |
Question: | I need to fill deep gouges in particleboard flooring under carpet. Is something better or cheaper when color and stainability aren't issues |
Answer: | Its a great product. I have used both the Famowood and Durhams Rock Hard water putty to fill in blemishes, cracks and large knot holes in plywood subflooring. Both worked very well with negligible shrinkage. A little sanding and a second application was required on large repair work. Both should work equally well on particle board. So far I have had no blemishes show through the finished VTC Vinyl flooring. As for pricing I would check local pricing and compare the cost with Amazon. Probably shipping charges will dictate your final choice.Regards,W. Les Clarke |
Question: | Am I the only one that is struggling to open the vapor lock seal lid? Certainly I am doing something wrong |
Answer: | Yes, had a hard time opening the lid myself. I tried just about everything I had on my workbench to try and pry open lid. I ended up using pliers to pry open the lid but it didn't look the same when I was done with it. Good product poor lid design |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fix a dime sized hole on a desk |
Answer: | I bought the one gallon and used it all for repairs on the house. Not cheap but I really like this stuff. Not cheap either but worked on everything I used it for. One trick I used was to fill holes with a block of hard wood and take up space and the fill and cover with sculp wood if deep. Bonds well mixed easy and sands good |
Question: | I accidentally bought the natural instead of white. Will this natural color show under white paint |
Answer: | I use Saran Wrap pushed down on the leftover product before putting the lids on the containers. I then store them in a cabinet in the garage that is heated. The two part mix is quite stable and lasts at least a couple years. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I know that paint will bond to this but will it bond to paint? Can I apply it to a crack in a painted surface or do I have to remove the paint first |
Answer: | Not sure. I would test a small area first, then try to use it. Let it dry then try to lightly pry it away from the paint. If it feels like its bonding, then try to finish the project. |
Question: | Can this be used to fill gouges and dents in hardwood floors |
Answer: | No, that wouldn't be a good idea at all! It might work ok on a stationary wooden item, but not something that is trafficked like a hardwood floor!! |
Question: | Would this work to fill in a quarter inch space around replaced wood in a subfloor |
Answer: | Instead use a cement based filler. For a small repairs use a premixed cement base crack filler like Henry Premixed Patch n' Level. |
Question: | My cat scratched the top of a cabinet door and put some really good nicks in it. Will this make it look like the scratches never happened |
Answer: | It would depend on what it's made out of/how it's finished. If it's stained wood, then, no, you'd need a stainable wood filler (this one isn't stainable). You could paint over this wood filler and it would look pretty good, however, after you'd sanded it down and everything. If the nicks aren't too deep, though, a touch up pen is your best bet. If they are deeper and your cabinets are wood and painted, this will work. If they're deeper but the cabinets are wood and stained, a product such as this would be more what you're looking for: http://www.amazon.com/Elmers-E887Q-Stainable-Filler-3-25-Ounce/dp/B001T4YU7K |

User questions & answers
Question: | do i have to mix the entire container at once |
Answer: | This fill need to be use and let dry for some time before you can stain /paint over it, and when storing it for the next time turn the container up side down so it doesn't dry out over time. |
