13 best wood deck sealers

Wood deck sealers are protective coatings applied to wooden decks to enhance their durability and longevity. These sealers are essential for maintaining the appearance and structural integrity of outdoor wooden surfaces, as they create a barrier that shields the wood from the damaging effects of weather, UV rays, moisture, and other environmental factors. Here's what you should know about wood deck sealers:

  1. Protection: Wood deck sealers provide a protective barrier that helps prevent moisture from penetrating the wood. This is crucial because moisture can lead to rot, mold, and decay, ultimately compromising the deck's strength.

  2. UV Protection: Many wood sealers contain UV inhibitors that shield the wood from the harmful effects of sunlight. UV rays can cause wood to fade, discolor, and become brittle over time.

  3. Waterproofing: Deck sealers are designed to make the wood surface waterproof or highly water-resistant. This prevents water from soaking into the wood, which can lead to warping, cracking, and other forms of damage.

  4. Enhanced Appearance: Sealers can enhance the natural beauty of the wood by highlighting its grain and color. They are available in various finishes, from clear to tinted, allowing you to achieve the desired look for your deck.

  5. Preventative Maintenance: Applying a wood sealer is a proactive measure to extend the life of your deck and reduce the need for costly repairs or replacement down the road.

  6. Types of Sealers: There are different types of wood deck sealers, including oil-based and water-based options. Oil-based sealers often penetrate deeper into the wood and provide a more natural appearance, while water-based sealers are typically easier to clean up and have a lower odor.

  7. Application: Wood deck sealers can be applied using brushes, rollers, or sprayers. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding application methods, drying times, and the number of coats needed for proper protection.

  8. Maintenance: Deck sealers typically require reapplication every 1 to 3 years, depending on factors like climate, sun exposure, and foot traffic. Regular maintenance helps ensure continued protection.

  9. Preparation: Before sealing a wood deck, it's crucial to clean and prepare the surface by removing dirt, mildew, old coatings, and loose wood fibers. Proper preparation ensures that the sealer adheres effectively.

  10. Environmental Considerations: Some wood sealers are formulated to be environmentally friendly and low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These options are less harmful to the environment and may be preferred for health and safety reasons.

In summary, wood deck sealers are essential for protecting outdoor wooden decks from moisture, UV rays, and other environmental factors that can lead to deterioration. They enhance the appearance of the wood and extend the lifespan of your deck, making them a valuable investment for homeowners looking to maintain their outdoor living spaces.

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains

Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, MARINE creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape. This key feature helps prevent damage to wood caused by water intrusion, such as: wood rot, decay, mold & mildew growth, cracking & splitting. Typical wood sealers form a barrier on the surface of the wood, trapping moisture below the surface. As the water evaporates, it causes the surface coating and the substrate to crack & peel, leaving a broken surface that requires continued maintenance and is susceptible to additional damage. SEAL-ONCE uses cutting-edge, nano-particle technology to allow wood to breath and help prevent water vapor damage by protecting wood from the inside out.

Water-based Product that Will Not Harm People, Pets, Plants, Livestock or Marine Life.

SEAL-ONCE products are ultra-low VOC, low odor, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-ozone depleting. They are safer for the environment, easier to apply than solvent based wood finishes and clean up with soap & water. They do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.

Quick & Easy Application

Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated, but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight. Clean-up brushes or sprayer with warm soapy water.

Choose from 11 Wood Stain Tints

MARINE can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray. The tints are sold separately and when mixed with Clear, the tinted formula provides additional UV protection from harmful sun rays.

Surface Preparation & Coverage

Approximate coverage: 250-350 sq. ft./gallon per coat. Actual coverage will vary due to the porosity of the surface. All surfaces should be cleaned with SEAL-ONCE All Wood Cleaner before sealing for best penetration and performance. Remove all old coatings, dust, debris and loose material. Remove oil, grease, algae, grime, mill glaze and mold and mildew stains with appropriate cleaners.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the warranty on this
Answer: I don't believe there is any warranty. We applied it two years ago and the covered areas still look good. The section in direct Sun...needs to have it applied again.
Question: How long can the product be stored once the container is opened
Answer: We actually used some that we had stored in our garage that was left over from the last time we stained our siding and that was in the summer of 2012, 6 yrs ago. When we removed the lid, it looked like it had become a gel but my husband used a drill with a paint mixer/stirrer tool and it became liquefied again. We applied it to the siding without incident and the color matched the new 5 gallon containers we bought this summer .
Question: I have 275 ft of fence plus a gate- what's the coverage with using a sprayer
Answer: I’m in the process of staining my fence (I am using a different brand) with a semi-transparent stain. I have 187’ of fence at 5’ high including 2 gates. Applied with a roller and brush, I’m going to need around 13 gallons. My recommendation is rent a sprayer from Home Depot. You’ll save time and money as you’ll use less product and it will go much much faster.
Question: we have a heavy dining set and i am worried about scratches after i stain, how does it hold up to heavy chairs moving back and forth
Answer: I have a deck/patio furniture set, including a cast iron umbrella base. Lots of use over the last year with no evidence of scratches in the deck. The stain penetrates the wood rather than building a barrier so dragging stuff across the boards won't take it off provided the wood is properly prepared.

User questions & answers

Question: How effective is this compared to other wood preservative products--green/brown/copper stains--you have used for wood touching ground
Answer: It is not as effective as tinted products. I apply it every year, and it seems to have extended the life of my 22-year-old cedar deck. It's not great, but I think that's the cost of using a clear product. The deck gets a lot of snow. And there is one area that never sees the sun. Those boards never get to dry completely, and 2 of them needed to be replaced after about 20 years. Those that do get some sun are still solid.
Question: Can I use this to coat wooden clipboards to protect from liquids
Answer: Thompsons Water Seal will protect anything made of wood. Just paint the TWS on with a brush and let dry for 24 hours and apply a second coat. Make sure you coat the edges really well also.
Question: What is product sheen ? I want a matte / satin when dried. This is for cedar posts on a covered deck, doesn't see much sun or rain. Thanks
Answer: Not too much sheen. Great product for our fence.
Question: Is this appropriate for ground-contact Douglas Fir for kids sandbox/playset? Trying to avoid pressure-treated and the cost of redwood if possible

User questions & answers

Question: The instructions say to use with softwoods. What about hardwoods
Answer: "Hardwood" describes wood from trees that lose their leaves seasonally. "Softwood" refers to conifers (e.g. pine trees). There are plenty of Hardwoods that are softer than hard Softwoods (though generally hardwoods tend to be sturdier than softwoods). I suspect they're recommending this for use with Softwoods because they'll be more likely to absorb this than a hardwood would. There's a reason why you don't generally see Pine used to make Barrels (or boats), other than because any consumable liquid you put in a pine barrel would taste like Pine air-freshener smells. If my suspicion is correct, that they're worried about hard closed-pore woods not absorbing this as well as "softwoods".. there are some "Hardwoods" that are very much like "Softwoods" in this regard. For Example.. White Oak is used for Wine Barrels because it has closed pores (and because it has some natural resistance to decay.. more than other North American & European hardwoods). Red Oak, on the other hand, has open pores which makes it way more water permiable. You can actually take a small piece of red oak (like a dowel), put one end in water and blow in the other end, and (depending on the cut and particular tree) you can actually create bubbles in the water because the open pores act like straws. Anyway.. bottom line.. I strongly suspect they're recommending for Soft Woods because they expect they will absorb more of the material.. which would also be important for it to not leave a goopy coating since it applies like a thin paste. For these reasons, it would probably work well on open-pored hardwoods too. I suspect this won't work well with pressure-treated wood either. The protectant that is applied deep into the wood under pressure would close up the pores (by design), prevent this from penetrating into the wood (same problem we have with gluing pressure treated wood). Not only would this decrease it's effectiveness, it would also adversely affect how it looks after it dries. You'll end up with a much thicker top-coat if it can't absorb into the wood. ---Steven. P.S. I was going to check the questions to see if there was info about using this as an anti-rot protectant under a final top-coat.. until I saw in the that it's silicon based. I know it's not related to this specific question but... Silicone-based products are hydrophobic (they repel water). If you tried paint over this with a water-based latex finish, it wouldn't stick. The Roxil would literally push the paint away from it's surface electrostaticly, the same way it makes water drops beed-up. Bummer, for a moment I had hopped this might be a clear alternative to green copper-based wood protectant.. which requires a bit more work to cover with White top-coats. :-/. Oh well.. still looks interesting for what it is. I'm going to get a quart to try out.
Question: Can this be used on pressure treated wood
Answer: I just submitted an answer to another question here.. about this product being recommended for Softwood, not Hardwood. Please check that answer out after it's been approved for posting to see the following in it's full context. Here's the bit I included there specifically about using this with pressure treaded wood though.. "I suspect this won't work well with pressure-treated wood either. The protectant that is applied deep into the wood under pressure would close up the pores (by design), prevent this from penetrating into the wood (same problem we have with gluing pressure treated wood). Not only would this decrease it's effectiveness, it would also adversely affect how it looks after it dries. You'll end up with a much thicker top-coat if it can't absorb into the wood." Sorter context: I think they recommend only using on softwood because it's more likely to absorb deeply into softwood than (most) hardwood. Because it's a paste.. it is either going to absorb into the wood, or it's going to dry as a thick top-coat that's more likely to wear or wash away. The Pressure-Treatment process would also prevent this from absorbing deep into the wood fiber and pores. I suspect (but can't confirm, yet) that this won't apply well to Pressure treated wood for this reason.. at least not to new pressure-treated wood. If you wanted to protect old PT wood that's got a dry weathered surface, you might have more success. --hope this helps, even though it's not based on first-hand knowledge.. just my experience working with wood. :-)
Question: Does anyone know if this product will work on an exterior table that was previously clear coated? It’s in need of a new, more robust clear coat
Answer: I fear the clear coat will repel the Roxil Wood Protection Cream from absorbing into the table wood. If you choose to apply the product, lightly sand the table first.
Question: Should this be used after stain is fully dry or right after I stain wood
Answer: I would let it dry first

Roxil Wood Protection Cream

Weatherproof fences, decking, sheds, furniture and more without changing their appearance.

Roxil Wood Protection Cream is a silicone cream emulsion for wooden structures. The unique cream formula is applied in a single coat directly to unpainted softwood timber using a brush or roller. After application, the cream will absorb into the wood surface and create an invisible waterproof barrier.

Waterproofs in a single coat

Most competing wood weatherproofing treatments are spray applied liquids. Liquids, when spraying or applying by brush, are difficult to apply accurately without dripping or splashing onto plant life or adjacent structures. The cream formulation of Roxil Wood Protection Cream is easy to apply neatly and allows for precise and measured application. It also results in a complete even coverage that lasts longer than competitor products.

Roxil Wood Protection Cream will cover approximately 45 – 55 square ft. per quart.

Only a single coat of Roxil Wood Protection Cream is needed to protect cleaned softwood timbers for 10+ years. The cream formula also allows for a quick and accurate application, with no splashback or run off on vertical or horizontal surfaces. To ensure best results, treatment surfaces should first be cleaned using a biocidal wood cleaner. For particularly vulnerable surfaces, a pre-treatment application of a suitable wood rot treatment should be considered.

Unique Cream Formulation - Instantly Waterproof

Most liquid treatments change the appearance of wood, leaving a stained color or a sheen. Roxil Wood Protection Cream does not change the color or texture of the wood that it is applied to, allowing it to retain its natural beauty. If desired, it is possible to apply a stain before the application of Roxil.

Reduces Mold and Algae Growth

Softwoods are highly susceptible to mold and algae growth due to their absorbent nature, especially in areas with high rainfall or in shade. Roxil Wood Protection Cream creates an invisible waterproof barrier that significantly reduces moisture ingress and makes the surface of softwoods inhospitable to mold and algae.

User questions & answers

Question: Could this be used on an exterior door to help with swelling from humidity? If so how to apply
Answer: I doubt it would help much. It stops water penetration but not humidity problems.
Question: Can the protector be applied on damp wood
Answer: I think not.
Question: Will this work on outdoor mahogany floor
Answer: Yes will protect it
Question: Hello, Do you have to re-apply every year
Answer: Probably. To tell, splash some water on the finish. If the water forms bubbles, the surface is OK for another season. However, after a year the surface may look dirty, and so you may want to clean it and re-seal it. Again, after you clean the surface, splash some water on it and see whether the previous seal still holds.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it take a long time to dry
Answer: We have had a ton of rain so I have not used it yet.
Question: How cold can I apply this to my covered porch?? Thanks rr
Answer: Hello, The application temperature must be between 50-90 F.
Question: Should I wipe down the wet spots after a few days of drying
Answer: Hello, Yes lightly wipe those spots and and make sure those areas are dry before putting into use. note: wet spots could have been caused by a lack of penetration into the wood (a previous stain or sealant could be the culprit), applying to heavy, or the presence of moisture in the wood.
Question: How do you open the plastic seal lid
Answer: Hello, Thanks for your question on this. The plastic lid can be slightly difficult to take off, but is applied to ensure safe transport. To remove, I have found that a paint can opener or flat head screw driver wedged either in the top or on the side on the can works pretty easily. Be sure not to use a hammer to try and wedge the flat head screw driver in, as you want to avoid damaging the metal can.

Stain + Sealant in One

Stain + Sealant in One protects and beautifies in one step.

Weather-Ready Application

Allows greater opportunities for staining when it may rain or when the weather may be too hot or cold.

Enhanced waterproofing protection

Helps make sure your wood is protected from cracking due to water.

Advanced SunBlock UV

Helps protects your wood from dangerous UV rays that can wear down the coating.

How much stain do you need to buy?

One gallon of wood stain covers approximately 250-350 square feed, which is enough for a small to medium deck. It should also cover both sides of a 25 foot long fence or a couple pieces of furniture.

Two Gallons

Two gallons of wood stain cover approximately 600 square feed, which should be more than enough for the standard deck project or a 50 foot long fence.

Three or more Gallons

Three or more gallons of wood stain will most likely only be needed on large projects, as they should cover over 850 square feed.

Note: Solid Color Stain requires two coats. You should effectively double your gallons purchased when using a solid.

How To Stain Your Wood Deck In 3 Easy Steps

Sweep debris from deck and then use a product such as Olympic Premium Deck Cleaner to penetrate the wood and lift dirt to the surface to be cleaned, as well as clean stains caused by mildew, dirt, algae and mold. Allow surface to dry.

STEP 2

Tape off any surfaces you don’t want stained. Also, avoid staining in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces because the stain will dry too fast to penetrate properly.

STEP 3

For clear, toner and semi-transparent stains, apply a thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or spray. For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. To avoid lap marks, apply to a few boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.

For best results, backbrush into the surface to work finish into the wood and ensure the coating is even. Make sure to treat all areas of the wood, including joints, edges and ends.

You’re going to want to follow the directions on your stain container to determine if anything needs done after your final application.

The Science of SEAL-ONCE and Innovative Use of Nanotechnology in Wood Finishes & Stains

Unlike many top-coat sealers sold today that trap moisture below the surface, NANO+POLY creates a flexible, breathable barrier which allows water vapor to escape.

They are safer for the environment and do not contain nitrates, phosphorous compounds or heavy metals like many Oil-based sealers & stains on the market today.

Quick & Easy Application

Apply first coat with a synthetic brush; pump-up garden sprayer; air-assisted; and/or airless sprayer. Use 15-17 tip and medium to coarse spray pattern. When spraying, always back brush for best results. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat. For best results, apply in the shade and out of direct sunlight.

Available in 11 Tinted Wood Stain Colors

NANO+POLY can be tinted for use as wood stain in any of the 11 color tints available: Clear, Light Brown, Natural, Brown, Mahogany, Redwood, Bronze Cedar, Cedar, Black, Battleship Gray, Shale Gray & Cape Cod Gray.

Question: The listing says semi-transparent, but the picture says transparent, which version is this
Answer: Semi
Question: Is this a gallon container of the product
Answer: Yes this is a one gallon of Thompson water seal
Question: what clear seal do you recommend to use on 12year old pressure treated planks
Answer: I've used Thompson's water-based semi-transparent stain/sealer 3 times now for my 15 year-old pressure-treated deck and it has always done a great job of covering and protecting the wood. It doesn't really last the 4 years they claim, but still very good. They also make an oil-based clear sealer and I use that on my cedar pergola, also very good stuff but it's hard to work with because it doesn't cleanup with water. As an alternative to the oil-base they have an all-purpose water-based clear sealer for wood and masonry. I would use that on my pergola if it was made of pressure treated wood, but with cedar I really want a penetrating oil. So for your pressure treated deck, I would recommend the water-based clear sealer. Given how well the semi-transparent stain has worked for me, I would expect good results with the clear as well. You will certainly want to clean the wood first if you expect to brighten the gray appearance of aged wood. I spray oxygen bleach on the wood first and then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse before sealing.
Question: Would this product work well on untreated Adirondack furniture
Answer: Yes, I think it would be suitable. I have only used it on my deck however. Good protection in a wet climate. Rub it down well after it dries to keep the color from getting on clothes though if you're using a color stain.

The Thompson's Company has earned a well-deserved reputation as identifying industry trends and emerging technologies.

In the early 1920’s, polymer chemist Edward Addis Thompson developed a formula that protected buildings from exterior water damage. His discovery became known as Thompson's WaterSeal Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer and initially was used by architectural and construction firms for concrete applications.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 25 ft. bridge across a creek. Can this product be applied with a pump up sprayer and is it safe if it goes in the creek
Answer: I used a pump sprayer to apply to 600 ft of fence. It took less than a day to do two coats. The product is thin and water-like; goes on slightly opaque and dries clear with little change to wood tone. The label says it is completely safe for humans, pets and the environment. Our fence weathered the first winter and hasn't grayed out at all.
Question: Will this make deck surface slippery
Answer: No it’s actually sticky for quite a while.
Question: I installed white cedar shingles 5 months ago and like the original natural blond color. Will this product prevent them from turning silver/gray
Answer: Hello: Yes, it will. Jim
Question: Can i apply over paint? can i apply paint over this? i'm doing both in adjacent areas and am concerned about overspray of each
Answer: Applying ToughTimber over paint is not recommended. It can be painted over, however, you should wait 7 days until the ToughTimber is fully dried. Overspray cleans easily with soap and water. Let us know if you have any additional questions. Thank you!

User questions & answers

Question: I already put linseed oil on my pine joists (in my shower) over a year ago now. Could I now put this product on for a better waterproof seal
Answer: I don't see why not. It has been a year. If it was only a few months, I would not use it.
Question: Can this be used on outdoor cedar furniture to seal and maintain the woods natural color
Answer: I have not tried cedar specifically but so far the all the other types of wood have kept their original color. There was a little bit of a whitish film right after application but that went away after it soaked in.
Question: If i use this on a trellis made of new pine 2x4s, how long can i reasonably expect it to last? when will i want to to reapply? no ground contact
Answer: If you apply the product generously and then come back before it dries and do another light application you should get a minimum of 3 years and most likely 5 years.
Question: I have made a wooden sink cover for my kitchen. Would this product keep the wood from warping/taking on water damage
Answer: We used this product in the back of a box truck. The floor has been wet many times over the last year and the wood has held up great. We have no warping or damage. Good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the preferred application method according to the label
Answer: Apply to a clean, dry composite deck using a manual pump sprayer. Spray the sealer in an even , ample amount to soak in well. Cover end pieces and edges of boards thoroughly as well. Use a squeegee to get even coverage if necessary. Allow to dry thoroughly, 24 to 48 hours if needed. It will dry clear unless there is a deep puddle left standing upon application. (Small puddles will soak in and dry clear. Deep peddles may leave a slightly milky look after drying.) If you have no mold in your deck before you use this, this product will keep mold out of your composite deck for about three years.
Question: Is this product water based
Answer: I haven't put it down yet. I'm not sure if it's water based or not. I'm ordering a second gallon before I start as I won't have enough to finish. I will post what I find once I've had an opportunity to use it.
Question: I have eon decking which can't have any petroleum based products. what exactly is in this product and will it harm my eon decking
Answer: I don't know about your decking product, but we used this cleaner on our "TREX" deck, and it worked great. We power washed the deck before applying the cleaner, and it dried looking practically brand new.
Question: will this work on Trex decking
Answer: This works very well on Trex decking.
