13 best voltage detectors
Voltage detectors, often referred to as voltage testers, are essential tools used in the field of electrical work for detecting the presence or absence of electrical voltage in a circuit or electrical device. These devices help ensure the safety of individuals working with electrical systems by allowing them to identify live wires or potentially dangerous electrical conditions.
Here are the key features and aspects related to voltage detectors:
Principle of Operation:
- Voltage detectors operate on the principle of detecting the electromagnetic field generated by an energized conductor or voltage-carrying component. When an electric field is detected, the voltage detector alerts the user.
Non-Contact Design:
- Most voltage detectors are non-contact devices, meaning they can detect voltage without direct contact with the conductor or wire. This non-contact feature enhances safety during testing.
LED or Audible Indicators:
- Voltage detectors typically have LED lights or audible alarms that activate when voltage is detected. The intensity of the LED lights or the sound of the alarm may vary based on the detected voltage level.
Voltage Range:
- Voltage detectors are designed to detect a specific range of voltages, typically indicated in volts (V). Common voltage ranges include low voltage (e.g., 12V to 1000V) and high voltage (e.g., 1000V and above).
Safety Features:
- Voltage detectors often come with safety features such as auto power-off to conserve battery life, ergonomic designs for comfortable handling, and durable construction to withstand the demands of electrical work.
Applications:
- Electricians, technicians, and individuals involved in electrical work use voltage detectors for a variety of tasks, including checking outlets, switches, circuit breakers, wiring, and appliances for the presence of voltage.
Usage Guidelines:
- Users must follow safety guidelines when using voltage detectors, such as verifying the functionality of the device before use, maintaining proper insulation and grounding, and being aware of potential electrical hazards.
Types of Voltage Detectors:
- Voltage detectors come in different types, including pen-style voltage testers, contact voltage testers, and clamp-style voltage testers. Each type has its own specific applications and features.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this test through the wire insulation |
Answer: | Yes. You can tell if it is an energized cord/circuit. |
Question: | Why does my tester beep 6 times, flashes red then turns off |
Answer: | i never noticed mine beeping and flashing but it alway's shut's down unless you hold the power button down for a few second's. |
Question: | Hi what does a slow beep with a red light indicate it's not rapid. Thanks Tom |
Answer: | Klein non-contact sensors are known for being misleading, by blinking red and beeping even when there is no electrical current nearby. It does blink red and beep fast (and continuously) at 110v power and is pretty good for that. The slow blinks/beeps, even when touching wood or the edge of a kitchen counter, mean nothing. Some say it's due to very low voltage or 'phantom voltage' but this doesn't always seem to be the case. |
Question: | This pen tester make any sounds when it detects power |
Answer: | Yes it make a sound and flash red, but make sur than the tester is on green to be sure to test 120 volt because you have two options bleu for low voltage and green for 120 volts! |

User questions & answers
Question: | The volt sensor is so sensitive it goes off near an outlet. Is that normal? I thought I could stick it in the slots to find out which side was hot |
Answer: | Yes, you can insert the tip of this tool into the slots of an outlet then press the button and it will tell you which side is hot. You can also use it to test the wires in a circuit if you are unsure which is the hot lead. If the wires are connected to the switch, outlet etc touch the tip to the bared wire at the contact point and it will tell you if it is hot. You can also just touch the insulation covering the wires to get a reading too. Try to keep the wires you are testing separted by a few inches if possible, this will help prevent any false reading you might get by voltage seepage from the insulated hot lead. If you didn't know - the hot wire in a circuit is usually black, red or maybe some other dark color, the white is the neutral or return and the green is the ground. Start by testing the dark wire first but as a precaution be sure the check the white also - someone may have wired in incorrectly and that could be a hot lead. I've had - well had, until I left it someplace - one of these for years and it's a good useful tool. So I gotta get another one now, and I'm getting one of these. |
Question: | Can this be used as a circuit breaker finder |
Answer: | You could use them to find a circuit breaker, if you had someone to watch the tester, while you went through your panel turning off and on your breakers untill you found the one that controlled that circuit. If you didn't want to do that then you will need to buy an circuit breaker finder kit. |
Question: | does this tester work on low-voltage landscape lighting wires |
Answer: | The non contact voltage tester will. |
Question: | can it tell the diffrence between 220v and 110v |
Answer: | If you can’t tell the difference 110v and 220v .You Dont Need A Meter. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this multimeter be used for an Automtive Tech |
Answer: | While this multimeter can do plenty of things for automotive. Most serious mechanics get the 87 or 88 series. |
Question: | what is the range of the capacitor that can be tested in this model |
Answer: | hope this helps. Range/Resolution: 1000 nF / 1 nFRange/Resolution: 10.00 μF / 0.01 μFRange/Resolution: 100.0 μF / 0.1 μFRange/Resolution: 9999 μF / 1 μFRange/Resolution: 100 μF to 1000 μFAccuracy: 1.9% + 2Range/Resolution: > 1000 μFAccuracy: 5% + 20% |
Question: | Can this multimeter be used on vehicles for a parasitic load test? I don't want to spend over $400 for the Fluke 88 as it is for personal vehicle use |
Answer: | it has been used on motorbikes for sure. It just needs to be in amp mode. If you're doing parasitic load, then you're focused on DC Amps. The 117 has up to 6, while the 88 has up to 10. I don't see a big issue as you're just doing parasitic, not actual use. If anything actually pulls more than 6, you'll blow the internal fuse and have to replace it, but that's about it. Shouldn't be a problem(I've just tested mine on my car and it works). |
Question: | What are the differences to pick between the Fluke 117 and the Fluke 115? My intended use would for ham radio and kit-building of electronic kits |
Answer: | The 117 adds • VoltAlert™ technology for non-contact voltage detection • AutoVolt automatic ac/dc voltage selection Both are handy but not essential. Be aware of none of these 'electrician' Flukes (115/116/117) read milliamps or microamps -- essential for electronics troubleshooting & design work but unnecessary for electrician tech work. That said, when reading current in amps they do seem to read accurate down to around at least 0.010 amps (10 milliamps) or so. |
Question: | is it two prong or three prong? can't see it in the picture |
Answer: | It's actually made to be plugged into a grounded wall socket, replacing the 2 3-pronged outlets with its 6 available grounded outlets. It can even replace the outlet cover and be screwed into place. I've got a bunch of these and love them. |
Question: | What are the actual dimensions of this unit |
Answer: | against the wall, mine is about 4 inches wide, 4 3/4 inches tall, and about 1 3/4 inches deep |
Question: | Will this work with half-switched outlets (where one outlet is always live and one is switched), or do all the outlets get power from only one outlet |
Answer: | All power for this device comes from the TOP outlet of your receptacle -- so if that is switched then all outlets on this device will be switched (or if your bottom outlet is switched then all outlets on this device will NOT be switched). |
Question: | Can this actually completely replace the existing outlet wall plate, or does it only plug in/screw on TOP of the wall plate |
Answer: | This can replace the existing wall plate -- that's how I am using it. |

Question: | Can this determine if a lightbulb socket has power |
Answer: | It will always glow when the "hot" side is present. However, if you are missing the neutral to your lightbulb socket your lightbulb will not work, but the instrument will still glow, showing power is present. |
Question: | What does this one do better than a non-contact tester at 1/3 of the price |
Answer: | It has better build quality, and it's not made in China (to me that means it's less likely to contribute to my death or injury). |
Question: | is this better than the klien |
Answer: | I find the Fluke's build quality to be better than the Klein. If I drop the Klein, the tail cap falls off and the batteries fly out. I don't have that issue with the Fluke. Also the power button works better, my Klein's button is too sensitive. Also the Fluke I have (the 1AC model) will detect voltage in most tamper resistant receptacles without having to open the shutter, where my Klein will not (some user reported the Fluke is not sensitive but relatively my experience is the opposite). Finally, the Klein and the Southwire are made in China (although the Southwire at least has a LED flashlight built in). The Fluke is not made in China so it is easily worth twice the price to me. You can check out the Fluke and Southwire models at Lowes (and purchase there if you like one or the other). The Klein is often on sale at HD but I really recommend against it compared to the other two. |
Question: | What is the difference between fluke 2ac and fluke 1ac-a1-ii |
Answer: | The 2ac is the newer model with an "always on" function. It has a button that is used only to ensure that it still has battery power. The 1ac is the older one that can be turned on or off. They both test for voltage presence the same way, but the 1ac has an audible alert function which the 2ac does not have. |
