Trailing Edge Dimmer

There are two main dimmers: leading edge and trailing edge, collectively known as phase cutting dimmers.

Leading Edge VS Trailing Edge

Trailing Edge dimmers are far more suitable for powering LEDs.

To answer your question - yes you can use a smart switch to control a fan, but as i just mentioned, not this particular one. I have quite a few in my buildings that control everything from exhaust fans to damper motors as well as lighting and they work fine. Question:	Can I use this switch on a single switch
Answer:	Your question could mean a couple different things. People often tie the "negative" or "return" black wire to ground, although that is generally bad practice. For sure you have to use the return wire or you otherwise don't have a circuit. Chances are high this does not have an independent ground built in, which is why we'll be seeing a lot more fires in the future.
