6 best lighting dimmers

Lighting dimmers, also known as dimmer switches, are devices used to control the brightness or intensity of electric lights. They are commonly installed in homes, offices, and various other commercial and residential settings to create different lighting atmospheres, conserve energy, and extend the lifespan of light bulbs. Here are some key points about lighting dimmers:

  1. Functionality: Dimmer switches allow users to adjust the level of illumination from a light source, typically from fully on to fully off, with various levels of brightness in between. This control can help set the mood, save energy, and reduce glare.

  2. Types of Dimmers:

    • Rotary Dimmers: These are the traditional knob-style dimmer switches that you turn to adjust the light intensity.
    • Slide Dimmers: Slide dimmers have a sliding control that you move up and down to change the brightness.
    • Toggle Dimmers: These dimmers resemble standard toggle switches but have a built-in dimming function.
    • Smart Dimmers: Modern dimmer switches can be connected to smart home systems, allowing remote control via smartphone apps or voice commands through devices like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.
  3. Compatibility: Dimmers may not be compatible with all types of light bulbs. Incandescent and halogen bulbs work well with most dimmer switches. However, energy-efficient options like CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) and LEDs (light-emitting diodes) may require specific dimmer models labeled as "LED-compatible" or "CFL-compatible."

  4. Benefits:

    • Energy Savings: Dimming lights can reduce electricity consumption, leading to energy savings and lower utility bills.
    • Extended Bulb Life: Dimming can extend the lifespan of light bulbs by reducing the heat generated when they operate at full brightness.
    • Mood and Ambiance: Dimmers can create different lighting moods, from cozy and intimate to bright and functional.
    • Reduced Glare: Dimming can reduce glare and eyestrain, especially in spaces with screens or reflective surfaces.
  5. Installation: Installing a dimmer switch generally involves replacing a standard on/off switch with a dimmer of your choice. It's essential to turn off the power to the circuit before installation to ensure safety. Some installations may require a neutral wire.

  6. Dimmer Rating: Dimmers have a maximum wattage rating, which indicates the total load they can handle. Make sure the combined wattage of the bulbs on the circuit doesn't exceed the dimmer's rating to avoid overheating.

  7. Three-Way Dimmers: In multi-location lighting setups (e.g., staircases or hallways), three-way dimmer switches are used. They work in conjunction with other switches to control the same light from different locations.

  8. Compatibility with Ceiling Fans: Some dimmer switches are designed to work with ceiling fans that have integrated lights. These switches allow you to control both the fan speed and light intensity.

  9. Regulations: Be aware of local electrical codes and regulations when installing dimmers, and ensure the dimmer switch you choose complies with safety standards.

In summary, lighting dimmers or dimmer switches are versatile tools for controlling the brightness and mood of lighting in various spaces. They offer energy savings, extended bulb life, and enhanced ambiance, making them a popular choice in residential and commercial settings.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work with a lamp that has 3 way switch
Answer: You ay need to click twice at the lamp itself to get it to work for either on or off. I know I need to do that on my 3 way lamp.
Question: Please clarify, is this for on/off only or will it dim my lamp that I would plug into it
Answer: is this for torch lamps
Question: Where is the switch located? close to the outlet? in the middle of the cable
Answer: The slider switch is in a 1" X 2" box at the end of a 3 foot cord. The unit is plugged into the wall outlet and the lamp is plugged into the back of the plug. You can run the cable for the dimmer switch alongside the lamp's cord, or in another direction entirely
Question: would this work to regulate a 3000watt heating element
Answer: You should never use an extension cord or similar item with a 3000 watt heating element. Great way to start a fire.

User questions & answers

Question: I plan on using this with a track lighting kit that uses dimmable leds. do i need anything (transformer?) between this switch and the track fixture
Answer: It would depend on the rack light system you use. If it uses 120v lamps then no. if it is a lower voltage lamp system it would have its own transformer as part of its installation and this dimmer is probably not what you need. You would then want a dimmer designed for low voltage applications. As far as I know though there is no hard and fast rule on this today as all the dimmers and transformers are electronic and may or may not be compatible with other electronic devices including the led drivers fjord the particular lamps in the track system you select. You should consult with the dealer you ate purchasing from and the installing electrician. If you ate doing it yourself you'll need do your research through the manufacturers of the equipment for comparability like the electrician would.
Question: What size bulb can be used with this dimmer? There seem to be all kinds of size bulbs available
Answer: That's right in the description: 150 watts LED / CFL, 600 watts incandescent. Just add the power requirements of all the bulbs controlled by the dimmer. For example, I'm using it to control 4 60 watt incandescent bulbs, total 240 watts. For LEDs / CFLs, use the actual power required, not the "equivalency". So a 23-watt CFL that says it's as bright as a 100 watt incandescent still only counts as 23 watts.
Question: difference in led and incandescent lighting dimmers
Answer: Some incandescent dimmers modify the output of the power in such a way that it either won't work at all or can damage the LED dimmer. LED dimmers I believe use finer PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) which will work with all dimming bulbs - incandescent, CFL, and LED bulbs. Using LED bulbs with a non-LED dimmer is a bad thing as is using LEDs that are not designed to be dimmed at all. The payback for the additional expense of the LED dimmer is pretty quick if it removes a large enough incandescent light bulb.
Question: Led dimmable bulb is flickering with this switch, is it bad
Answer: Problem: Flickering or FlashingPossible Cause #1: Incorrect VoltageLED downlights have a specified input voltage. Incorrect voltage to the driver can cause the LED to flicker or toflash on and off. * Check the input voltage of the driver (Ex: 120V) then check the voltage being delivered to the fixture (Ex: 277V). There may be a mismatch. If possible, replace the driver on the downlight for one with the correct input voltage to match the line voltage or, if that is not an option, install an applicable voltage transformer to the line voltage to achieve the required input voltage for the original fixture.Possible Cause #2: Incompatible DimmerIf the LED downlight was not designed for a particular dimming load or if the driver is not compatible with thedimming control then issues may occur. * Try bypassing the dimming circuit. If the LED functions normally then an incompatible dimmer or dimming load may be the issue or the driver is not a dimming driver. Consult factory to determine whether the driver is dimmable and, if so, what kind of dimmer is compatible with the driver. Please check this web link for a list of factory qualified compatible dimmers: http://www.liton.com/webcatalog/brochures/wp_dimmingfacts.pdfPossible Cause #3: Occupancy Sensor/Control Rated WattageThese controls sometimes have a minimum rated wattage in order to function correctly. For example, theremaybe a minimum of 20W required for the control unit but the LED might only consume 10W. * Add additional fixtures to the circuit to get to the required wattage for the dimming control or replace the dimming control unit with one that has a lower wattage requirement.remedyremedyremedycontinue...TROUBLESHOOTINGLED DOWNLIGHTSA DIVISION OF EEMA LIGHTING GROUP * 5461 WEST JEFFERSON BLVD., LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA * PH: 323.904.0200 (1 800 515 4880)FAX: 323.904.0201 (1 800 972 4880)Problem: Flickering or Flashing cont..Possible Cause #4: Dimmer OverloadA common problem with LED dimming is the inadvertent overloading of the LED driver. LED drivers are rated fora maximum load (measured in volts, amps and/or watts) that must not be exceeded. The number of lamps that can be installed on a single-phase control dimmer may seem to be an easy calculation. For example, suppose you want to know how many 15W LED fixtures can be installed on a 600W dimmer. Youmight divide the 600W by 15W and determine that you could control 40 fixtures. Unfortunately, that result mightbe wrong. In fact, you may only be able to use 6 LED fixtures on a dimmer rated for 600W.Even though the LED fixture may draw only 15W continuously, there may be a start-up in-rush current or arepetitive half cycle surge that makes the dimmer think that the current is much higher. That 15W LED fixturemay appear to the dimmer as a 100W incandescent load. If that happens and you are using more than 6 LEDfixtures, you will overload the dimmer. The average start-up or half-cycle stress that has been observed is the equivalent of a 100W incandescent lamp, even for LED loads of less than 20W! * For 10W & 15W Liton -DLV products, consult the charts in the LED Dimming Facts Guide to reference tested maximums by dimmer. * Remove the dimmer from the line to see if the problem is solved. * Change dimmer to one with a higher maximum load. * Split the circuit into multiple loads.Possible Cause #5: Dimmer UnderloadSome dimmers may not perform well if too little load is put on them. A minimum number of fixtures may berequired to operate correctly due to the 25W - 40W minimum load that most incandescent dimmers require tooperate correctly under all conditions. When using incandescent bulbs, the minimum load requirement waseasily met. However, with LED four or more loads may be required for a dimmer to reach the required minimumload. * For 10W & 15W Liton - DLV products, consult the charts in the LED Dimming Facts Guide to reference tested minimum by dimmer. * Remove the dimmer from the line to see if the problem is solved. * Change dimmer to one with a lower minimum load.

  • Includes Lutron Toggler LED+ (formerly C.L) Dimmer Switch; coordinating wallplate sold separately

User questions & answers

Question: Is this considered triac based (forward phase control or leading edge) or 0-10v switch
Answer: The AYCL-153P is a triac based dimmer rated for 150W of compatible LED/CFL or 600W of incandescent/halogen lighting. For compatible LEDs with this dimmer, or another Lutron dimmer, please visit www.lutron.com/ledfinder or www.lutron.com/ledtool.
Question: do I need two of these switches in a 3-way application or can I use one dimmer with a normal 3-way on the other end
Answer: Lutron does not recommend two AYCL-153P-WH dimmers in 3-way application. The second location would need to be a standard 3-way mechanical switch.
Question: Can you fit three of these switches side by side in a standard 3 gang box
Answer: The switch generates heat so it has tabs on both sides to prevent you from mounting them side by side without being aware that you have to "derate" them if you want to install them side be side. In other words, you can put 600 watts of incandescent bulbs on one dimmer if you mount it alone but only 500 watts of incandescent on a dimmer with one side tab removed (you remove only the tab(s) that overlap) and only 400 watts load with both tabs removed (as you would do mounting 3 switches in a standard 3 gang box). They also include a chart for derating when you mix CFL/LED bulbs with incandescent.
Question: Anyone know the difference between the "Ariadni" switch (AYCL-153P) and the "Toggler" switch (TGCL-153P
Answer: I was wondering this exact same question, so I called Lutron and learned that they're the exact same switch. The model numbers differ because they're marketed/sold differently (e.g. Home Depot vs. other stores). So, if you find one cheaper than another, as I've done here on Amazon, buy the less expensive one!
Question: Where is it made? USA
Answer: HI,Customer, It is Made in China, UL listed
Question: Are there a 2, 3 snd 4 gang wall plates for these
Answer: Yes, these are standard size switches. Home Depot or Lowes should have multi-gang plates.
Question: installed but not turning on when the slide is in between and also hear some sound when you keep your ears on switch in dim mode . anyone else faced
Answer: No sounds from mine. Make sure your bulbs a dimmable type? Just a guess.
Question: can this dimmer be used on 12 volt LED lamps
Answer: I doubt it, but contact mfg., they are very responsive.

Cloudy Bay dimmer improves the compatibility of dimmable CFLs and LEDs compared to standard dimmers by eliminating flicker, making sure lights operate properly at all levels.

Trouble shooting

1: Light flash in the whole dimming range

a. Check the lighting/lamp is dimmable or not

b. The lighting fixture is not compatible with our dimmer

c. Most dimmable LEDs and CFLs will not acheive as low level as incandescent or halogen sources.

d. Control a group of lighting fixtures/lamps with one dimmer may cause flicker due to variation of dimming circuit and dimming range. Please use dimmer to

control lights/lamps in the same type or same model.

2. Light flash in low dimming range

a.Slightly turn the adjustment dial counter- clockwise to achieve full compatibility with the lights

3. Get dimmer list from light bulb/lighting fixture's supplier to avoid compatible issue with our dimmer, a broad dimmer list means less dimming issue, such as flicker, buzz, or flash issue, also, better buy FCC compliance lighting product for stable performance.

User questions & answers

Question: does this switch work w ikea ceiling lamps? i don't need all bells, whistles. just a simple dimmer. thanks
Answer: It should work with any lamp that uses standard incandescent or halogen bulbs, or most dimmable CFL bulbs. With LEDs it's a bit trickier, only some brands of dimmable LED bulbs will work. (This is because the switch draws a small amount of current through the light bulb and LEDs are so efficient that this tiny amount of power can make some bulbs glow even when the switch is off.)
Question: Is there a smart light switch that does not require a neutral wire
Answer: Absolutely! The Lutron smart dimmer, does not require a neutral wire, and wires together similar to a normal switch, just be advised that this switch does not work with all LED frequency bulbs.
Question: Is it really true that you cannot recall the last brightness settings without using the pico remote
Answer: There is another one, PD-5NE-XX*, that has the "bump" in the middle like the Pico remote. However, it is pricey (they showed $99-$135 on their web site: http://www.casetawireless.com/Pages/Products.aspx). Like the Pico remote, the bump is for a favorite setting, not the last setting. They also make one with a nightlight where the bump is: PJN-3BRL-GWH-L01, but that is a Pico remote, not the main switch.
Question: Is there a minimum load? when i connect this, the status lights aren't on, switch is unresponsive, and led light bulbs are stuck at half power
Answer: These "two wire" dimmer switches are a little tricky. Assuming you went through your troubleshooting listed on your instructions (wiring, FASS switch) there are a couple of things to consider. If possible replace with an incandescent bulb as one will definitely give you the minimum load. If it doesn't work then it's defective. If the incadescent bulb works take a look at this document that discusses minimum loads:http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/367-2035_LED_white_paper.pdfIt talks about minimum load of these types of units in general and it may be possible one LED may not be enough. Also there is an approved bulb list on their sitehttp://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/3683266_Caseta_CFL%20LED%20Bulb%20list.pdfThat will let you know if they've tested your bulb. I'm running multiple LED floods so I'm comfortably into minimum load range.

User questions & answers

Question: Is each dimmer on a different RV to allow two units to be installed next to each other and remain independent from each other
Answer: I think one set dimmer can work with 2 set deck lights in 32pcs lights not any problem.
Question: I have the lights on a timer. With this dimmer the lights do not come back on when power is resored. Is there a way to use the dimmer on a timer
Answer: Hello, you should use the remote turn on the lights while you connect the dimmer with the deck lights. I don't know your timer's dimmer is fit for our deck lights. But you can try it.
Question: Hi. Is there a way to add daylight sensor to the lights that are dimmed with this dimmer? Without needing to turn on the lights with remote
Answer: I have a photocell outlet with a timer that the lights plug into and this dimmer DOES NOT work with it. The dimmers state defaults to off, so if the power is cutoff by the photocell outlet then it is in the Off status and when the photo cell turns back on the lights are off until you use the remote. Making the remote useless. If the default status was 100% on or 50% power when the photocell gave it power this would be an awesome device. But if you want the lights to come on at dusk and then dim you are not going to get it with this device.
Question: Will this dimmer work with another brand's power supply? If so, does the power supply have to be a dimmable kind to work
Answer: I not sugget to do like this. Because the dimemer just fit for our deck lights and power supply. You can try. But we can't sure it is can work with another power supply. Because we never test the dimmer with others. Hope you can understanding.
