User questions & answers

Question: Can I leave this plugged into an appliance for 2 to 3 days to get an overall reading of what the applicance is using
Answer: What we got was for 110 volt only... I don't know if they have anything for 220.
Question: Hello is suitable for honda eu20i output 220v ?. thank you
Answer: There are a lot of differences of the THP103 and Kill-A-Watt. The THP103 has a cord for hard to reach places, plugs in and gives an instant readout in amps or watts. The Kill-A-Watt is designed to remain plugged into a specific appliance to keep track of how much power is being used over a time period to relate to understanding how one might be charged for power consumption. The THP103 is a quick readout to help plan a generator setup, but with knowing the watts and how often it’s on per day someone calculates the expenses involved over any period of time. Let us know if you find yourself with any additional questions.
Question: Will this work on 220 volts
Answer: I bought this just to get the meters to monitor the load. I expect the case itself is only adding $15-20 more. Maybe you can call Reliance and see if they sell parts but I bet they would be more than just buying the unit on Amazon....
Question: What's the difference in function between this and the Kill-A-Watt
Answer: NO! - Yeah! The pictures tripped me up also - I ordered the wrong one at first. The MB75 measures up to 3750 watts / per phase (2 meters) which is perfect for me and my 10,000 watt (peak) generator. The MB125 meters are scaled for for a larger generator, don't remember the scale, but it was an overkill for me. I would have thought someone would have corrected the obvious picture error by now? Anyway - the meter is great! It gives me piece of mind that I am not overloading the generator.

Answer: d905k kubota engine in a rl4000 light tower we used this in.. and it showes the watts well ...hope this helps... but the kubota uses a regular alternator
Question: Does 10awg/12awg thick wire go in series with this meter (i.e., all current goes thru it) or does it use a shunt or current transformer
Answer: I am not sure what your question is but I think you are asking if this is for a 30 Amp service and yes it is. I used it for metering my transfer switch for my portable generator to power my well pump.
Question: Which current transformer do you use with these
Answer: Hello, thank you for contacting us about the THP103 AmWatt. The readings are real time and this device does not keep track of any data. User questions & answers

Question: hi I have a generator that runs a wattage of 5250 watts with a surge of 6500 would the mb75 be suitable or would it be better to use the mb
Answer: You have 2 legs (hot wires) that feed the panel and 1 neutral. Between the 2 hot legs = 240 volts and between any hot leg and neutral = 120V. When you load balance a panel you will measure the total amps for what you will be using on generator power for each hot leg. If one side is higher than the other you can balance it closer by moving a breaker a position up or down with that adjacent breaker. If you have an amp probe you can find the specific circuits amp value to help you instead of guessing. Keep in mind loads will vary depending on what is in use so to have it perfectly balanced all the time is not realistic but you want to see it close to keep your generator happy.
Question: How is this thing 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" x 8-1/2"??? 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" I would believe. What are its actual dimensions please? Thanks
Answer: I purchased one of these controls and when my electrician came and saw it he told me to send it back. He said that to get any real benefit from it you would have to watch it all of the time. But, to answer your question it should work fine. You can only draw the wattage that your generator can produce from the main breaker. I have a Westinghouse 7500 watt with 9000 watt peak voltage and it would have worked fin with it. The main breaker on my generator is 30 amps.
Question: What is load balancing? So single pole breakers can be moved which shifts devices from 1 pole to the 2nd pole
Answer: My Switch Had 2 meters already installed , with connecting cables, So I don't know if your switch has the same Sequence.
Question: i have a sportsman 7000 wat with 6000 surge will this be good for that
Answer: It is wired in series from generator power source to circuit breaker in my transfer switch application.

User questions & answers

Question: I watched one of your videos on youtube for installing this and the tech used 10/3 wire! Is that suitable or do I need
Answer: You are correct. The image is wrong, It's of a PB20 box. It's just the photo that's incorrect. You'll get the 30amp box if you order this item. I did and I was happy when it came.
Question: Can this be used without a transfer switch. i know you have to use one, but will it work without it
Answer: This box is to connect your generator to the transfer switch, not to connect any sort of load (like your welder) to the generator or panel. As an aside, if your welder is 50A @ 220v then that's 11,000 watts and way over the rating of your generator.
Question: The picture shows a 20 amp, ground lug pointing out. A 30 amp has the ground lug pointing in. Am I correct
Answer: I didn’t realize until after I received it that the unit is intended eve installed indoors. I needed outdoors. I tried to communicate with the company to exchange it for the one I needed. The response was that they carry over 100000 items from hardware to healthcare products and unless I could provide them the ID number of the one I needed they would not know what to send me! Furthermore if I did do an exchange I would have to pay shipping both ways and it’s quite heavy. In the end the back and forth with them took so long that the 30 day return option ran out and I’m now stuck with it. I do not recommend this company under any circumstances. I’ve had it since last summer and am trying to find someone who can figure out a way to install it before Hurricane season.
Question: fo I need the 50amp inlet box if I plan to run a welder? my generator is 7500 watt, but I know my welder has a 50amp plug
Answer: Yes you can but be aware that the outside unit will take 2 ganged breakers as well as 2 ganged breakers for the air handler leaving you with only 6 for other items. This is the way I have mine configured. This also assumes you have a generator capable of handling load. I have a 12,000 watt generator and a 2 1/2 tin heat pump ac.

Product description

Empowers You to Save Hundreds on Electric Bills

Electricity bills are rising. Now you can cut down on costs and find out what appliances are actually worth keeping plugged in. Simply connect these appliances to the Kill A Watt, and it will assess how efficient they really are. The large LCD display counts consumption by the kilowatt-hour, the same as your local utility. You can calculate your electrical expenses by the day, week, month, even an entire year. Also check the quality of your power by monitoring voltage, line frequency, and power factor. Now you will know if it is time for a new refrigerator or if that old air conditioner is still saving you money. Kill A Watt can help you reduce your power bill and will help find power-wasting appliances so you are able to decide whether it is worth keeping them plugged in. For standard 115 VAC appliances only, 15 amps maximum, 125 VAC maximum.

Find Out How Much Electricity You're Using

The U.S Department of Energy reports that 20% of our electric bills come from items that are left plugged in when they are not in use, or items that are in standby mode. With the Kill A Watt P4400 we can monitor the energy eaters in our homes and cut down our electric bills at the same time. Plug whatever item you want into the device and it will tell you the efficiency of that item by displaying the kilowatt per hour. This device will help you determine which items are costing you the most to run. The Kill A Watt also calculates voltage, line frequency, current, and power factor. You can calculate your electric bill before you even receive it from the electric company.

Test The Quality of Your Home's Power

But measuring appliance consumption is just the tip of the iceberg. Because it can monitor voltage (Volt) and line frequency it can also test if an outlet is working, or evaluate the quality of the electrical power provided by your utility company. It can detect voltage drops around the house, help to predict brownout conditions or to make sure a new home's outlets are in working condition before escrow closes.

    User questions & answers

Question: Hi, is this unit able to capture peak current draw? I want to see if my audio amplifier ever gets close to tripping my breaker
Answer: This will only plug into a 120 VAC outlet. The standard 120 VAC outlet in almost all homes is only rated 15A continuous duty, but can take more for a second like when a room air conditioner compressor starts up. This is probably following those same rules. If the wiring is 12 gauge or thicker, it can be hooked to a 20 amp breaker even though all of the outlets in the average house are rated 15A, at least in most states. The reality of the matter is that wiring and outlets can always take somewhat more than the ratings and everything is oversized for safety. But is is always considered unsafe to plug in any device that uses more than 15 amps into a typical house outlet. An exception is commercial outlets that fit both home devices and heavier duty commercial device plugs and those outlets are usually rated at 20 amp. Those outlets are more common in businesses and uncommon in homes. An air conditioner or commercial refrigerator that uses more than about 10 continuous amps will normally be a 240 volt appliance and require different type of outlet designed for 240 volts, same is true of typical electric clothes dryer and this device would not adapt to those.
Question: Will this work with two prong (non-grounded) outlets
Answer: This device, the P4400, will reset all of its timed measurement values to zero if power is lost or the device is unplugged. The P4460 has "non volatile" memory, using a battery to provide the necessary voltage to power the (S)RAM memory, which means that it will not lose the data if power to the 4460 is lost. The P4460 also will let you input the cost per KWH from your provider to calculate the cost to operate the appliance over a week, month and year (assuming that your use is the same during the extrapolated period as it was during the measurement period). For me the data retention feature is well worth the extra $4 since I want to keep track of the energy used by a window air conditioner which will vary by the outdoor temperature, the sun hitting the building, the humidity, etc.
Question: most of my outlets are 20 amps or more, the killawatt is only 15 amps does that make a difference in calculations, the garage is 40 amp
Answer: Hello, the correct wire is typically referred to as 10/3 with ground, but yes 10/4 would be the correct amount of wires. Reliance Controls videos have the 10/3 with ground used in install videos. Any other video done by others may not have the correct wire.
Question: what is the difference between the p4400 and the p
Answer: Hello and thanks for your question! The PB30 inlet box is just a plug for a generator cord in an outdoor rated enclosure. It is used to connect a generator cord and then bring the wiring into a building to connect to what should be a transfer switch or device. The wiring from the PB30 brought inside doesn’t have to connect to a transfer switch for the power to be utilized, but every state law requires a transfer device to connect generator power to. Hope this helps!

    User questions & answers

Question: Does anybody make one of these that allows monitoring two circuits with two ct's, and just toggle the display
Answer: I bought two meters and hooked up the coils to my wires coming from my generator feed to my double pole breaker , then I bought two more coils on eBay and put them on my main feed .Soldered the coils from both feeds to a four double pole mini switches so when the switches were in the up position the meters read the house power (normal power) When the four switches are in the down position I would monitor the generator feed when using the generator during a power outage.Wasn’t sure if the switches were necessary or if I could just parallel the coils from the a Phase and the ones feeding the b phase but used the switches to separate the coils from each other just in case. Works perfect this way.Now I can monitor normal power or generator power with just two meters.
    Question: es resistente al agua
Answer: Saludo amigo no para nada no es resistente al agua
Question: Does the meter display values up to the test values or main specifications? (ie. rated up to 100 amps, but displays only up to 5 amps
Answer: (What are you connecting this too?) You’ll get what ever the AMP value from the watts divided by voltage. Watts / voltage = amps Im running 3500 watts at 240v = 14.5 amps (this is shown on my display) If you are only seeing 5 amps, then your wattage is only around 600w on 120v circuit. Hope this helps
Question: Does this record the amount of power used over a period of time
Answer: It records watt-hours, but not time. If you want to know how much power was used over, say 30 days, you must manually note when you first began monitoring the circuit. This can be as simple as taking a picture of the display with your phone, which will of course time/date stamp your picture. One added benefit, it will retain watt-hours even if power is lost. It is not cleared until you manually clear it with the button to the right of the display.

    User questions & answers

Question: What type of fuel do you put in
Answer: no, it has a pull start but it pulls very easy. Never had to pull more than twice. Electric starter is just one more thing to go wrong on a generator
Question: Has anyone converted theirs to propane
Answer: The Westinghouse product I am interested in will not ship to CA. What makes this odd is this exact unit is sold online and in stores here in CA. If it were in stock I would gladly buy locally. Maybe these situations will slowly bring Amazon to its long overdue knees.
Question: Does it have an electric start
Answer: I don't have it but from what I know about it is that you can measure watts for long period of time, So - reset meter, set it to continuously measure watt*hour (WH, watt for 1 hour=60 minutes*60=for 3600 seconds), connect your turned off amp, turn it on and immediately turn it off exactly after 1/2 second. Meter SHOULD show wattage consumed for 1/2 second because they say it measures power FEW TIMES PER Second (though still will be measuring after amp will be turned off, but it is ALMOST not consuming power) - that will be your surge power - multiply it by 3600 and by 2 (because 3600 for hour and for whole 1 sec it would be twice higher) and divide it on 115, or whatever voltage will be during measurements (put voltmeter to measure voltage, or just measure voltage before starting test, though voltage can can change fast). And you will get average current for first 1/2 sec. If you manage to turn it off exactly after 1/4 sec (but don't forget to multiply measured WattHour by 3600 and by 4, because 3600 higher for 1 hour and for whole 1 sec it would be 4 times higher) then measuring current surge will be more accurate. This calculation imitates WattHours consumed by amp as if it worked with average current equal to surge current for 1 hour, and that is why you divide those WattHours on voltage to get average current equal to surge current (which actually happened only during part of first second). So, if meter accurate enough to measure small power consumption then all this will work. But remember: amp MAY not like it, though SHOULD Tolerate such thing - anyway, don't blame me if something happens to it. I would do that myself, i believe this is not unusual for amp.
Question: Why won't it ship to California
Answer: Be Careful- defeating a polarized plug can be dangerous. The wide prong is neutral and connected to ground. The narrow prong is "hot" (energized) compared to ground. Some devices such as tools, chargers, and others use polarization to reduce the chance of electrical shock. If the device, such as most lamps, doesn't have a polarized plug then there is no concern, an adapter or extension cord is fine. If a device has a polarized 2 prong plug and you decide to use an adapter anyway, make sure the KillaWatt's plug's small slot on front is aligned with the wall plugs small slot and the larger slot on front aligns with the larger slot on the wall plug to maintain polarity. It is impossible to reliably maintain polarity using an extension cord so I would never attempt it. I would never cut off the ground prong, the blade prongs on the KillaWatt are the same size because the ground prong aligns the correct prongs with the wall plug so they do not need to be different sizes. Once you cut off the ground prong the odds are 50/50 of dangerously reversing the polarity of the plug on the front of the KillaWatt since it may, or may not, be plugged in correctly. Similarly if the wall plug slots are both the same size you are once again at 50/50 odds of plugging the KillaWatt in incorrectly with an adapter making the KillaWatt itself an "adapter" permitting you to plug polarized plugs into unpolarized wall plugs. Once again if the lamp etc doesn't have a polarized plug this is not an issue. (If you want to know more about why polarization makes things safer just ask)

    User questions & answers

Question: What is the hole size in CT
Answer: NO.We don't have a AC meter which can measure up to 200A power.
Question: What are the cutout dimensions? What panel thickness is max
Answer: Yes, but note that the Watts and Watt-Hour readings will be inaccurate. The meter uses the voltage reading to determine watts and watt-hours. So you can monitor a 240V line with the unit powered off 120V. You just have to multiply watts and watt-hours by 2. I am doing this exact thing on my baseboard heater circuit. The heater is 240VAC but I don't have handy access to 240V to power the meter where I want to use it. So I plug it into 120VAC using an old power cord and multiply "power" and "energy" by 2 to get correct values.
Question: Do you have a unit that can measure up to 200Amp
Answer: Fuel must meet these requirements. Clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline A minimum of 87 octane/87 AKI (91 RON). Gasoline with no more than 10% ethanol is acceptable. Do not use unapproved gasolines, such as E85. Do not mix oil in gasoline or modify the engine to run on alternate fuels. This will damage the engine components and void the warranty, To protect the fuel system from gum formation, mix a fuel stabilizer into the fuel. Please refer to your owners manual for further instructions.
Question: Can the meter be powered from a different circuit then the circuit that's being monitored
Answer: I don't know of anyone converting, but would be interested in any response from someone who has. My home standby generator, Generac, is propane and I love it.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can this be connected to mains 240v to read l1 l2 of an electrical panel? or is there one that will work
    Answer: yes
Question: What's the test clip/ring for
Answer: You would need to use a grip amp meter to be sure take measurements with it first then fit extended leads and compare results
Question: Can i use this on a portable generator to see power being used
Answer: The inner diameter of the CT coil is approx 1.6cm.
Question: Does anyone know if increasing the split transformer leads length to 24" would affect the accuracy
Answer: The cutout would be 1.8" x 3.4" for a slightly loose fit. standard max panel thickness would be .032" but if you trimmed the holding tabs you could accommodate up to a .150" panel. If you remove the holding tabs and use a different retention system 1/2" panel would work.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can this be set up to use and view on a desktop computer or does a person have to have a cellphone
Answer: The OUT signal is a simple on/off detector with no adjustments. However, the analog detector signal can be tapped at pin 12 on the IC. The output is not doppler. The RCWL-0516 appears to be a free-running 3 GHZ oscillator tank that moves around in frequency depending on multipath resonances in the near environment. I did try doppler-like detection at very close proximity, and was able to see heartbeat frequency on pin 12 with a digital scope. If you tune the chip placement inside a Cantenna, it might be highly directional. Happy Hacking!
Question: Does this work with a 240 line
Answer: Customers who bought this module for their own DIY projects did not say that permission/certification is required to use this module. And no one is saying this product is illegal. Thanks
    Question: Any monthly app fees
