Empowers You to Save Hundreds on Electric Bills
Electricity bills are rising. Now you can cut down on costs and find out what appliances are actually worth keeping plugged in. Simply connect these appliances to the Kill A Watt, and it will assess how efficient they really are. The large LCD display counts consumption by the kilowatt-hour, the same as your local utility. You can calculate your electrical expenses by the day, week, month, even an entire year. Also check the quality of your power by monitoring voltage, line frequency, and power factor. Now you will know if it is time for a new refrigerator or if that old air conditioner is still saving you money. Kill A Watt can help you reduce your power bill and will help find power-wasting appliances so you are able to decide whether it is worth keeping them plugged in. For standard 115 VAC appliances only, 15 amps maximum, 125 VAC maximum.Find Out How Much Electricity You're Using
The U.S Department of Energy reports that 20% of our electric bills come from items that are left plugged in when they are not in use, or items that are in standby mode. With the Kill A Watt P4400 we can monitor the energy eaters in our homes and cut down our electric bills at the same time. Plug whatever item you want into the device and it will tell you the efficiency of that item by displaying the kilowatt per hour. This device will help you determine which items are costing you the most to run. The Kill A Watt also calculates voltage, line frequency, current, and power factor. You can calculate your electric bill before you even receive it from the electric company.Test The Quality of Your Home's Power
But measuring appliance consumption is just the tip of the iceberg. Because it can monitor voltage (Volt) and line frequency it can also test if an outlet is working, or evaluate the quality of the electrical power provided by your utility company. It can detect voltage drops around the house, help to predict brownout conditions or to make sure a new home's outlets are in working condition before escrow closes.

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, is this unit able to capture peak current draw? I want to see if my audio amplifier ever gets close to tripping my breaker |
Answer: | This will only plug into a 120 VAC outlet. The standard 120 VAC outlet in almost all homes is only rated 15A continuous duty, but can take more for a second like when a room air conditioner compressor starts up. This is probably following those same rules. If the wiring is 12 gauge or thicker, it can be hooked to a 20 amp breaker even though all of the outlets in the average house are rated 15A, at least in most states. The reality of the matter is that wiring and outlets can always take somewhat more than the ratings and everything is oversized for safety. But is is always considered unsafe to plug in any device that uses more than 15 amps into a typical house outlet. An exception is commercial outlets that fit both home devices and heavier duty commercial device plugs and those outlets are usually rated at 20 amp. Those outlets are more common in businesses and uncommon in homes. An air conditioner or commercial refrigerator that uses more than about 10 continuous amps will normally be a 240 volt appliance and require different type of outlet designed for 240 volts, same is true of typical electric clothes dryer and this device would not adapt to those. |
Question: | Will this work with two prong (non-grounded) outlets |
Answer: | This device, the P4400, will reset all of its timed measurement values to zero if power is lost or the device is unplugged. The P4460 has "non volatile" memory, using a battery to provide the necessary voltage to power the (S)RAM memory, which means that it will not lose the data if power to the 4460 is lost. The P4460 also will let you input the cost per KWH from your provider to calculate the cost to operate the appliance over a week, month and year (assuming that your use is the same during the extrapolated period as it was during the measurement period). For me the data retention feature is well worth the extra $4 since I want to keep track of the energy used by a window air conditioner which will vary by the outdoor temperature, the sun hitting the building, the humidity, etc. |
Question: | most of my outlets are 20 amps or more, the killawatt is only 15 amps does that make a difference in calculations, the garage is 40 amp |
Answer: | Hello, the correct wire is typically referred to as 10/3 with ground, but yes 10/4 would be the correct amount of wires. Reliance Controls videos have the 10/3 with ground used in install videos. Any other video done by others may not have the correct wire. |
Question: | what is the difference between the p4400 and the p |
Answer: | Hello and thanks for your question! The PB30 inlet box is just a plug for a generator cord in an outdoor rated enclosure. It is used to connect a generator cord and then bring the wiring into a building to connect to what should be a transfer switch or device. The wiring from the PB30 brought inside doesn’t have to connect to a transfer switch for the power to be utilized, but every state law requires a transfer device to connect generator power to. Hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this model 220v (Non US) AC compatible? If not, which model is? Thanks in advance |
Answer: | At the moment, we don't have an API or developer program. That being said, we see integrations are an important part of the future of Sense and will continue to look into additional ways to connect with other devices. In the meantime, check out our IFTT integration! |
Question: | does this work on 220v 60hz house outlet |
Answer: | Unfortunately, Sense does not have an option for an ethernet port, our monitors must have a consistent WiFi connection. |
Question: | Can it be set for a period of time (such as 24 hours) and record usage only then |
Answer: | Using IFTT, you can log device turning on (or off) in a Google spreadsheet; see https://ifttt.com/sense_energy_monitor --- that said, if Google goes belly up and closes, same cloud-based service problem exists. |
Question: | To how many decimal places does this one display for Watts |
Answer: | For those of you familiar with Python or Docker, the open-source Vuegraf project allows you to pull all metrics from the vue service and store them into your own InfluxDB and build graphs in Grafana. You can set alarms to trigger when certain thresholds are breached. Search the Internet for vuegraf and it should be the first result. |

This is a CMOS 8-bit successive approximation A/D converter that uses a differential potentiometric ladder-similar to the 256R products. This converter is designed to allow operation with the NSC800 and INS8080A derivative control bus with TRI-STATE output latches directly driving the data bus. This A/D appears like memorylocations or I/O ports to the microprocessor and no interfacing logic is needed.
User questions & answers
Question: | Can this measure 240 volts |
Answer: | YES it does read temperature in Celsius as well as Fahrenheit. I just bought this meter and am looking at it right now and if you read the instructions it can be switched to read either C or F. Just use the select button to choose which one after yo have set the range switch to TEMP. |
Question: | Can this device show me how much electricity my travel trailer consumes each month? I live in it full time |
Answer: | The Triplett spec states that 10A of current can pass through the meter but only for 10 seconds. There is no fuse protection within the meter when it is set to the 10A range. Therefore, you risk burning the meter out if 10A of current is passed through the meter for an extended period of time. |
Question: | Will this tell me how much my panels are putting back into the grid |
Answer: | yes it can |
Question: | What's the difference between the p4400 and p4400-vp |
Answer: | Get the BTMETER High voltage digital multimeter. This is the only one on Amazon that I could find that tells you how many volts it goes up to. It says 1000 volts and list for under $30. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the app on my wife ios phone and my android phone be simultaneously logged in to the app |
Answer: | Yes it will that is what I use mine for. It gives me an AC reading right between the Grid Ready inverter and the power grid. |
Question: | Does the app function when outside the home? Ie. Will I be able to see real-time data for my home while away at work |
Answer: | The P4400-vp can be shipped on international orders. Great Britain and France, even the Island of St. Martin Dutch side (120VAC) and St. Maartin French side (240VAC). have significantly different power from the US. The French and Great Britain use power 240VAC "Phase/ or live leg to ground" instead of the US "live leg to live leg" for 240VAC. Even though this unit is not usable for 240volt it is cleared for international use since the unit tests on phase to ground 120VAC and this is what we use in the US. It would appear that this has to do with the way the ground (round plug) and neutral are utilized in the device. |
Question: | does it sum up power usage for a period of time, like every month |
Answer: | What I understand of resolution on this context is: the increment steps of the measure. A 10 resolution will measure either 0, 10, 20, 30 .... but never a number in between. |
Question: | Is it truly worth 300 bucks |
Answer: | Not really. If you are sure which range is best you should start high and work your way down until you get the accuracy you need. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it mearsure watts |
Answer: | Time/Watts/Cost Time/Volts/Cost Time/Current/Power Plus two more modes |
Question: | How do I install batteries and what size battery |
Answer: | No visible battery door, hatch. Since it plugs into power when in use, if there is a battery, it's charging when being used. |
Question: | Is this rated for 15a/1800w continuous? in other words, what happens if you connect it to an ev charger, which will draw 15a all the time |
Answer: | Yes, rated15A continuous. Only draws about 1 watt (0.008 amps) by itself. Basically, it will draw what the EV charger draws. If you get one, you will see that the EV charger draws max load early, then power draw dwindles as the car gets closer to full charge. It will not draw 15A continuously. You will also be able to measure the watt-hour capacity of your electric vehicle's battery storage. Plus it makes you cool without smoking cigarettes. Very cool. |
Question: | Having an issue with 2 outlets in my house and I need to track the power at them. When they lose power and when it came back.Do these keep history |
Answer: | I dont think these are what your looking for. They do a great job tracking power used, but there isn't a function for testing outlets. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use it on a gas dryer that takes 30 Amps for a split second to start? I know it runs below 8 amps once started |
Answer: | Its a crap shoot as to whether this meter can handle the surge current of start up. Maybe itll work once, twice, a few times. But eventually it WILL fail. Id recommend one of those add in power monitor displays with a split core transformer that is clamped around the input hot line to sense current. For example, a CrocSee CRS-022B. Much, much safer. And can sense up to 100A! |
Question: | can be used connecting 220 Volts at 60 Hz |
Answer: | Yes, this item is designed for 110-220v, 50-60hz, AC power. |
Question: | Can you plug space heaters into it safely |
Answer: | It depends, the max. wattage rating of the PN2000 is 1760w @110v or 2000w @125v (16 amps). As long as your space heater rating is lower than this, it should work. Most space heaters have a max. output of 1500W, so you should be good to go. Note: Due to the large start-up amps of space heater, though device has abilities to deal with it, we still recommend not to use the device near the max rated specs (in most cases, the true RMS Current will be around 15A) for a long time to avoid any unexpected damage or accident. And please kindly know that the inner and outer device material is fireproofing. If device is over used or exposure to excessive heat, it may cause a melt incident but it won't start a fire. Still, you need use this device carefully to avoid any fire hazard. |
Question: | Does it tell you how much electricity has been used in 24 hours and the cost of usage |
Answer: | Yes, it will give a total usage over any time period (loose power circuits will be fine, consumption kWh will be kept in memory). So you just need to let it run 24 hours and check the Electricity Consumption (EC). Regarding the cost of usage, you have to do the math. Here gives you an example: Let's say your billed KWH is 0.07 and the distribution charge is 0.04. Then the KWH charge $0.07 + distribution charge $0.04 = $0.11 per Kilowatt Hour(kWh) usage. So if your device is using total 2.4 kW-hrs(EC) per 24 hours (which is equal to 100 watts in one hour), then you are paying $0.11 per kWh * 2.4 kilowatts per day = $0.264 for each day of use. Hope this explains it better. |

User questions & answers
Question: | El aparato acepta 220V de alimentación |
Answer: | Yes! Trends will show days, weeks, months, and year usage in kilowatt along with $$ spent. You can also break it down into each known device. |
Question: | Is it possible to get a manual |
Answer: | It is worth $300 to me because I'm an Engineer who lives in Arizona and have to feed an air conditioner with electricity for half the year. Because half my electric bill is dependent upon hourly usage totals, calculated each hour between 3 PM and 8 PM. The highest hourly total in a billing period times $16 makes every kW of Demand important. It may well save me more than $300 a year to be able to monitor my on peak usage. If you understand how your billing is done and what affects the numbers, yes, it can be well worth it. I love my Sense. Otherwise, it just gives you numbers that are meaningless. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then it probably is not worth $300 to you. I hope this helped. |
Question: | What is maximum length of time this will gather information |
Answer: | No, 240 Volts is higher than the maximum allowable voltage. The limits: Max. Voltage: 125 Volts, Max. Current: 15 Amps, Max. Power: 1875 Watts (that's about the highest a microwave will go). Also, you can see it doesn't have the correct 3 pronged plug for appliances like washing machines. |
Question: | We are only 3 people in the family and the consumption is higher than in other houses With this device can I find out what is spending most energy |
Answer: | It reports the total consumption from when plugged in, but will restart if power is interrupted. The report does include the duration of measurement. It is limited to 110-120 V current. |
