11 best foil insulation boards

Foil insulation boards are a type of insulation material commonly used in construction and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) applications to improve energy efficiency and temperature control within buildings. These boards are related to window insulation kits, weatherproofing, and various tools and home improvement supplies. Here's some key information about foil insulation boards:

  1. Material Composition: Foil insulation boards typically consist of multiple layers of material, including a core layer of rigid foam insulation, often made from materials like expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS), or polyisocyanurate (polyiso). One or both sides of the board are covered with a reflective foil facing.

  2. Reflective Properties: The reflective foil facing on the boards serves as a radiant barrier. It reflects heat away from its surface, helping to maintain a consistent temperature inside the building and preventing heat loss during the colder months and heat gain during the warmer months.

  3. Thermal Insulation: Foil insulation boards provide thermal insulation by reducing heat transfer through conduction and radiation. They have a high R-value, which is a measure of their thermal resistance, making them effective at reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling.

  4. Installation: These boards are relatively easy to install. They can be cut to size and fitted between wall studs, roof rafters, or floor joists. They can also be used to insulate crawl spaces and attic spaces. The foil facing should face the interior of the building to maximize its reflective properties.

  5. Applications:

    • Wall Insulation: Foil insulation boards are commonly used in walls to enhance thermal insulation and reduce heat loss.
    • Roof and Attic Insulation: They are also used in roofs and attics to control heat transfer and maintain a comfortable indoor environment.
    • Floor Insulation: Foil insulation boards can be installed under floors to prevent heat loss to the ground.
    • Ductwork: In HVAC systems, these boards are used to insulate ductwork to minimize heat gain or loss during air distribution.
    • Window Insulation: While not typically used as window insulation kits, foil insulation boards may be used in conjunction with other materials for window insulation in certain applications.
  6. Weatherproofing: Foil insulation boards can contribute to weatherproofing by creating a barrier against moisture and air infiltration. This can help reduce drafts and prevent moisture-related issues like condensation and mold growth.

  7. Cost and Energy Savings: Installing foil insulation boards can lead to significant energy savings by reducing the need for heating and cooling, ultimately lowering utility bills.

  8. Regulations: It's essential to follow local building codes and regulations when installing foil insulation boards to ensure proper installation and compliance with energy efficiency standards.

In summary, foil insulation boards are versatile materials that play a crucial role in improving energy efficiency, temperature control, and weatherproofing in residential and commercial buildings. They are commonly used in various applications within the construction and HVAC industries.

User questions & answers

Question: Temperature rating
Answer: According to the manufacturer's web site -60 to 180 Fahrenheit.
Question: would this be good for a well house insulator? if not what would b good
Answer: I would say no. This is for small things that don't need much insulation. I would say a board type insulation like Tyvec would be a better choice for a well house.
Question: I want to make custom fit side window covers for may car. Do the edges need to be sealed/wrapped with tape to keep from ripping/fraying/etc
Answer: I would say that is not necessary. The material is stromg and does not tear easily. However, I made tabs from blue 3M masking tape to make it easier to remove the Reflectix window cover from the windows. If you should happen to cut your cover a bit small making a tape edging solves that problem. Check out YouTube for some good ideas on using Reflectix for window coverings...lots of good pointers.
Question: Would this help keep heat out if put on inside of windows (AZ
Answer: You bet! That's what I did with it. I measured windows inside the van, cut the material out about 1/2-3/4" larger than the window size, top and bottom, then just push it into the window and smooth it into shape in the area. Trimmed little bits until it fits snugly. Then I wrote on each piece with marker pen to denote which window it goes in. You can easily take them out for driving, and then put them back when you are storing or parking in the sun. It covered the two back door and two side door and two overhead windows in overcab area. Would need larger size if you have more windows.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this tape have a peel off Backing
Answer: LOL ..... Good question .... I had the same question but it went into my laundry room so it wasn't a big deal. I have a stainless steel fridge ... this is a slightly darker color than that so I would say Brushed Nickel....It also feels smother than stainless too. It's like Pepsi and Coke ...It's hard to tell them apart by looking.!!! If I had more stainless steel finishes in that room ... It would still be pretty hard to see the difference. P.S -- It's a good quality unit .... Nice supply lines too.
Question: Can you wrap this around a portable airconditioner hose to help with heat
Answer: I didn't know the hose threading on the spout was removable. I don't know if that part is replaceable, you might want to check the internet and/or call the manufacturer. Are you sure that part is supposed to come off? Your faucet may have been defective (I'm not sure).
Question: will this tape adhere solidly to wood or is adhesion weak
Answer: It's 2 or 3-hole 4" installation
Question: How many feet are in each roll
Answer: Yes, it will accept a garden hose.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used to insulate the airducts in the crawlspace
Answer: Yes that is what I am using it for
Question: Is it very reflective
Answer: I am not sure if you are asking about reflecting visible light or radiant "heat". In either case I would call it almost mirror like. I have read that these aluminum products reflect almost 100% of radiant heat making it a perfect companion for traditional High R insulation: perfect for attics, basements etc.
Question: what is the R value of this product
Answer: 6-13 if more than 1/2” airspace is maintained on both sides. Very little if it’s flat against drywall. Depends on how tightly it’s installed too ( and whether you want it tight ).
Question: What is the R value if used to wrap interior duct work
Answer: The r value when used in duct work is 6.1.

Question: Will it unravel if cut, looking to use as window coverings in a travel trailer
Answer: Yes - You can attach a garden hose without any additional adapter - This is why I purchased this unit for my sink in the garage - It fits the bill and works fine.
Question: how thick is it
Answer: Good question, but I don't know if it has a ceramic valve insert nor lead free. I bought this faucet for my utility sink....and do not plan to drink any water from this faucet.
Question: This might be weird but can u sew it and it hold the stitching well
Answer: Yes. The distance between the center of the cold and hot inlets is 4 inches. It's a great utility room faucet.

User questions & answers

Question: can it be used for automobile
Answer: solid brass according to specifications
Question: Can I use this to cover a window
Answer: no there shouldn't be as long as you keep the hot water side closed and set it up with a plug or cap on the inlet just in case some turns it on not knowing there is no hot water hooked up. If you just need cold water why not just put in a single hose bib?
Question: If used on walls in garage will it keep the garage cool in summer
Answer: I would box it up and take it back with the receipt to the place of purchase and they should give you a replacement.
Question: can this be used on pipes to eliminate the noise
Answer: If you look at the picture of the faucet the large rings behind each of the two faucet handles are what would be mounted against the wall so it would only be mounted at the most a couple of inches away from the wall depending on how it was plumbed in. Not sure where you got the 9" measurement but that could be from the wall to the end of the spout.

User questions & answers

Question: My flexible duct insulation is falling off. Can I use this to wrap the insulated Mylar duct to hold the insulation in place
Answer: You need the non perforated type to seal ducts. Even then you still need a air gap around the ductwork or the Radiant Barrier will sweat. And you have missing fiberglass just patch the holes with tape make sure it's fully covered and then rewrap airtight with tape and Mastic. Good luck I'm about to undertake the same project myself.
Question: Can this product be installed against house wrap and than install lp lap siding
Answer: For best insulatuve results,be sure to create at least a 1 inch air gap between layers.
Question: If I was to put the radiant barrier against my vinyl siding then put the waterproof/plastic covering the radiant barrier the plastic waterproof melt
Answer: You should run this on the very top of your exterior. It must have an air gap to be useful. It should go like this exterior: OSB/Ply/Zip etc. (SHEATHING) *Optional* IF, you're using an exterior insulation then you'd run that (I'm using 1" Rigid Foam XPS). *Optional* Filling my seams around the 1" Rigid Foam using spray foam (in the can). Helping to create an airtight seal. House wrap (Tyvek). This is debatable, some say to run the Tyvek underneath the exterior rigid foam and normally I'd agree. BUT using the radiant barrier it is suggested by almost all manufacturers to ensure your radiant barrier has an air gap and reflects out. *Required* Create your air gap. Using whatever you wish ie. Wood or foam, you make furling strips. I am using a 4' x 8' of the 1" rigid foam cutting that into 2" wide 4ft long strips. I marked my exterior studs with a blue chalk line (ensuring ease for location of my 16" OC and studs). Now running my 1" foam (Furring strips) down the sides and one in the center using liquid nail and screw/nail into each one. After I have created my air gap I used the radiant barrier (one sided) shiny side facing out towards the world. Stapling them up and then using the foil tape to create the air seal. You can then run your siding on top of the foil and you're done. Short Answer- Exterior- *SHEATHING (OSB, PLY, WHATEVER) *Exterior Insulation (Optional) seal the seams *Tyvek (tape the seams) *CREATING YOUR AIR GAP- Running your Furring Strips down your stud bays and adding a center furring strip to ensure gap remains. *Staple up your Radiant Barrier (Shiny side facing out) Seal your seams. *Siding
Question: Is this perforated? Is it a vapor barrier
Answer: Is this material perforated or solid. This is important as to where I use it Thank you

User questions & answers

Question: I am building a small shed for my generator. Will this work for that? Is it fire proof
Answer: Not fire proof
Question: Can I wrap air ducts that form condensation with this
Answer: Yes it will work, however the regular duct wrap maybe less expensive
Question: May I use this on RV windows
Answer: This is best type of insulation for RV windows. It will reflect 97% of radiant heat, plus have a great resistance to conductive flow of heat. AD-5 reflective insulation will stop both Conductive and Radiant flow of heat, also good sound barrier.
Question: Can this be glued up? Thanks
Answer: Yes. Before the insulation is glued be certain that the glued area is clean and dry. We used this insulation glued to the fiberglass top of a cargo van to reduce heat transfer. The inside of the cargo area stays some what cooler in the summer and slightly warmer in the winter keeping the cargo at better temperatures then outside.
