11 best quiet whole house fan shutter
A quiet whole house fan shutter is an essential component of a whole house fan system used for ventilation in residential buildings. It plays a crucial role in controlling the flow of air in and out of the house. Here's what you need to know about it:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a quiet whole house fan shutter is to regulate the flow of air between the attic and the living space of a house when the whole house fan is in operation. It allows fresh, outdoor air to be drawn into the house through open windows while simultaneously expelling hot, stale indoor air into the attic and out through roof vents.
Noise Reduction: The term "quiet" in the name suggests that these shutters are designed to minimize noise transmission from the attic to the living areas when the fan is running. This is important because traditional whole house fans can be quite noisy, and the shutter helps dampen the noise.
Construction: Quiet whole house fan shutters are typically constructed from durable materials such as aluminum or galvanized steel. They are designed to withstand the rigors of continuous operation and provide a long service life.
Operation: These shutters are hinged and can be opened and closed automatically or manually. When the whole house fan is turned on, the shutter opens to allow air to flow freely between the house and the attic. When the fan is turned off, the shutter closes, sealing off the attic to prevent heat loss or gain and to maintain energy efficiency.
Energy Efficiency: Properly functioning shutters help improve the energy efficiency of a whole house fan system. By preventing unwanted heat transfer between the attic and the living spaces, they contribute to maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the shutter continues to function correctly. This includes cleaning the shutter blades and ensuring that the hinges and springs are in good working condition.
In summary, a quiet whole house fan shutter is an integral part of a whole house ventilation system, designed to regulate airflow, reduce noise, and maintain energy efficiency in residential buildings. It ensures that fresh outdoor air can be drawn in while expelling stale indoor air, contributing to a healthier and more comfortable living environment.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a two story, 3700 sf home with a solar attic fan. How much of cooling difference will adding the whole house fan make to cooling my house |
Answer: | The solar attic fan will probably make the whole house fan work more efficiently as the attic should be cooler. You can definitely benefit from the whole house fan though as it will cool your house and the attic rather than the attic only. I would only add that the 36-inch fan would probably be more adequate for your size house, but that depends also on the footage vs fan allocation. My house is 3400 sq ft and the fan works great for us. |
Question: | I live in the North East, how well do the shutters prevent cold air from sinking from the attic into the house during the winter months |
Answer: | It is pretty good at stopping the air flow but you will still loose a lot of heat. The metal shutters have no insulation value so you basically have a 3 foot square hole in your ceiling. This hole also lets in a lot of heat in the summer when the fan is not in use. There is a fix for this. There are several videos on You Tube that show you how to construct a cover, inside your attic, out of 2 inch insulating foam. It has doors that will still open and close when the fan is on. I have not built mine yet but plan to as soon as it cools off some. |
Question: | How wide are the vent veins that actually move? Will they fit between 24" on center truss giving you 22 1/2" opening |
Answer: | The cut out is 26" if i remember.. I tried to install it your method but couldnt and had to use the joint in middle method with extra wood for frame.. This fan has paid for itself already. Works great |
Question: | I have a 950 sq ft home. It says not to install in smaller that 1200 sq ft.... If I left it on low would it be ok |
Answer: | Approx 800 square foot here... We open the windows and leave the fan on low; it performs admirably. Make sure your attic venting is adequate; that makes the biggest difference. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dementions of the grill insert in the celing |
Answer: | 14"x20" |
Question: | Would the idea be to install this fan and direct it towards another existing attic fan for example installed in the side of the house |
Answer: | The fan does not need to be directed toward an attic fan. The fan is designed to bring in the cool air from outside and push it into the attic forcing the hot attic air out through all the roof vents. |
Question: | Do you have an o&m manual that i can review before i purchase.? want to see how to install |
Answer: | Yes. Please send email to [email protected] and I’ll reply with the manual. |

What is HVI-916?
HVI-916 is the testing procedure for measuring energy efficiency and airflow (Cubic Feet of Air Per Minute "CFM") of whole house fans. It is the true apples to apples comparisons. All other CFM ratings are whatever the manufacturer makes up.
Should I purchase a whole house fan even though I have air conditioning?
Big yes! Extremely hot air gets trapped in your attic during hot summer days. Through the late afternoon and evening, air conditioning has the chore of battling this heat that is radiating into the home. Because hot air within the house rises to the highest levels and cold air sinks to the lowest levels, air conditioning is fighting a losing battle. Customers relying on A/C alone find that they end up with a hot upper level and cold lower level.
How much does it cost to operate?
The cost to operate a whole house fan is about 10% of what it costs to run a typical residential air conditioner.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product include an opening vent cover or luvered opening |
Answer: | It's been a few years since I installed one but the ones I did all had an insulated double door that opened before the fan turns on. Depending on how well your attic is vented you may want to add more to let the heat out. These things move some air. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Would this fan fit on a 24 on center framing |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. The HV1000 series whole house fan is able to be seated either 16" or 24" on center. |
Question: | is there a way I could control 2 of these linked together |
Answer: | Hello, yes you may. The fan is controlled with a switch and 2 can be installed to operate on a single switch. Thank you and regards, Mark - Battic Door Energy |
Question: | would this be suitable for two floor home @ 2400 Sq Ft? if not- which would one recommend |
Answer: | No. I liked the construction and the insulation cover so I purchased it for my 1700 SF home. It was not adequate for the size of my home. I replaced it with a Quiet Cool CL-3100 which was much more effective and QUIET. If you live in a warm area like southern California inland areas, I recommend a larger unit, or as I did, I added smaller Quiet Cool CL-1500 for the master bedroom. The Tamarack is also very, very NOISY. I constructed a box to mount it on so that it was about a foot above the rafters as the instructions said this would help alleviate noise; this didn't help. If you can live with the sound of a piper cup taking off all night long then maybe the larger Tamarack is for you. |
Question: | what is the duct diameter of the QA 5500? I am assuming |
Answer: | 18” |
Question: | Is there somewhere I can download a copy of installation manual |
Answer: | You can see an installation video at centricair . com. |
Question: | Is it possible to duct this directly to a gable vent |
Answer: | I suppose you could but I don't know if you should. I added a gable fan also. Venting directly to the gable will not remove hot attic air which helps tremendously. The house fan runs during the night and fills the house with cool air that keeps the house comfortable all day. The gable fan runs during the day to constantly remove hot attic air. We only need air conditioning during a heat wave. |
Question: | What happens if in install a larger unit them my house needs |
Answer: | The size of the home isn't the issue, it's the amount of attic ventilation. If you do not have enough attic ventilation to exhaust the amount of air you are pushing into the attic, it can cause over pressurization issues including forcing the hot attic air down the walls and into the house. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there some way to contact the shipping department for this item before I buy |
Answer: | Look for the QuietCool web site and call them. I did before I bought. They told me it was silent but it isn't. |
Question: | What are the dimensions of the ceiling box |
Answer: | The ceiling box for the QC CL-2250 is 14x18x10. Additional specs. can found here: http://www.quietcoolfan.com/quietcoolproductsheet.pdf |
Question: | why would u exhaust air in the attic |
Answer: | Because the attic is 120-160 degrees and is a heating blanket on your home. Any natural air is cooler than your attic. Makes your whole home a breeze way to outdoors. |
Question: | Since it's an 18 inch duct which only has 245 square inches of opening, how can it produce 4757 cfm? My calculations suggest 1000 cfm |
Answer: | That duct size suggests 45 ft/s or 31 mph air flow. Seems plausible. Not supersonic or anything ;-) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have a pull chain or do you need to hard wire it to a switch |
Answer: | Mine has a pull chain for hi/low/off. However, I leave mine on high and put an inline remote on it so I can turn it on an off from the living room. You will need to wire it with some type cord to a standard 110V power supply. I had a power outlet already in the attic for an attic fan so I simply wired my fan via an extension cord to the power outlet. Easy. |
Question: | How many watts does it use |
Answer: | 2.8 amps on high. 120 volts X 2.8 amps = ~335 Watts1.5 amps on low. 120 volts X 1.5 amps = ~180 Watts |
Question: | What is the decibel sound rating of this fan |
Answer: | I don't have a hard number on the sound rating of this fan, but I am happy with its performance in my garage. Standing right under it you would be able to hold a conversation with somebody close to you by raising your voice just a bit. At the lower speed setting the sound drops probably about 6 to 10 dB and the conversation would be fairly comfortable. |
Question: | I live in a 1200 SQ FT Town house (Condominium) in Southern California. I do not have any roof vents. I do have soffit vent screens, I am okay to use |
Answer: | I installed this on my 1100 Sq Ft townhouse in LA. I also do not have any roof vents, but.. there are soffit vents all around the building (4 units) and it works OK for me. I have not had any complaints from my neighbors (they share the attic with me and this fan pressurizes the attic) . The only thing I worry about is the pressure comes out all around the light switchs in all 4 units. To be safe, I run it almost 95% of the time on low so it's not noticeable. If you feel the air from your own outlets and switches you know what your neighbors will feel it. They can't hear it, but I recommend you be carefull they don't complain to the management. To be fair, I am friends with the other neighbors so They know about it and would tell me, but since I installed this and used it since 2002, I think it's earned it's keep. The low pressure is good enough for me. It cools down any room I need it to right away and if I only use it when it's hot, it cools everyone else's attic as well as mine. All in all, just keep the above in mind and use it on low only till people get used to it. I think they may just think it's the wind.... ;-) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why would you want to draw hot humid pollen laden ambient outside air into your home? Why not draw cool 54 degree air from your crawlspace instead |
Answer: | Great question. The correct way to operate a whole house fan is to run it when it is cooler outside than it is inside. This is a great opportunity to ventilate the home as well. If you live in a place with a high pollen count I would suggest adding an allergy screen even if you don't buy a whole house fan. If you still have questions, we would be more than happy to answer them. Just give us a call at 888-QUIETCOOL or 951-325-6340 |
Question: | Can this be installed on a wall |
Answer: | it would take some fabrication but yes your probably better off looking for something that is made for a wall |
Question: | Is qc es3100 single or two speed |
Answer: | It is a two speed fan but you can connect it up to run on a single speed (on high) or both speeds. |
Question: | Does it come with a switch |
Answer: | no it does not. I got the wifi hub and that made install pretty easy. they do sell a separate control switch |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have a similar model with a plug |
Answer: | Contrary to the other commentor, some assistants can unlock via voice such as Apple's Homekit. However, HomePod currently won't, and if using a phone requires that phone to be unlocked. So yes, if your phone was face up near the door, and there was an open window or something and the phone was still unlocked, theoretically a person could yell to unlock. But realistically, since phone auto lock shouldn't be an issue, and wouldn't be able to yell through and outside door, so would require an open window, or very thing glass and the mic super close to the door. |
Question: | My power supply cord has 3 wires. Connected black to black, white to white, and green wire to a mounting screw. Fan not working. Any idea |
Answer: | Sort-of- depending on what you mean by 'have a code'. Each phone would have the ability to lock and unlock the lock, and each would be set up as their own user with access that you could control (ie, if you decided you only wanted 3 kids, you could revoke access for the one you didn't want anymore). Also, you could see in the logs which kid opened the lock and when. But the kids themselves wouldn't have to remember any codes, they would just have to remember to carry their phones. Unless you added the accessory keypad device- then they COULD have a unique keycode to punch in for access in case they forgot their phones. I hope that helps. PS- you should consult a lawyer before abandoning one of your children, as there may be legal ramifications. |
Question: | What is the cfm |
Answer: | Yes you will! This page walks you through how to do that: https://www.yalehome.com/en/yale/yalehome/support/yale-smart-home-support/samsung-smartthings/pin-code-management/ |
Question: | Will this fit between 16 inch studs (14.5 inches |
Answer: | We test our locks using both an ANSI/BHMA standard and a special proprietary salt water test to help ensure quality and operation in these types of environments. Our finish and hardware is covered by a lifetime limited warranty - electronics are covered by one year. |

Question: | Can you operate the system by remote control without the smart thermostat attached |
Answer: | without the controller hooked up it simply goes to full speed when plugged in. with the controller plugged in it can operate at any of the speeds 1-10. I operate mine with an Alexa controlled smart outlet. It returns to the same speed every time. Set it at speed 6, and then have the Alexa plug (or a plain wall switch) turn the power on an off. But you have to keep the controller plugged in or it will go to 10. |
