10 best z wave programmable thermostat
A Z-Wave programmable thermostat is a home automation device that allows you to control your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system remotely using Z-Wave wireless technology. These thermostats offer advanced features and capabilities beyond traditional programmable thermostats. Here's what you need to know about Z-Wave programmable thermostats:
Z-Wave Technology: Z-Wave is a wireless communication protocol used in smart home devices. Z-Wave devices create a mesh network that allows them to communicate with each other and with a central hub or controller. Z-Wave programmable thermostats use this technology to connect to your home automation system.
Remote Control: One of the key benefits of Z-Wave programmable thermostats is the ability to control your HVAC system remotely using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. This remote access allows you to adjust temperature settings, set schedules, and monitor your home's temperature from anywhere with an internet connection.
Programmability: Like traditional programmable thermostats, Z-Wave thermostats enable you to create heating and cooling schedules to optimize energy efficiency. You can set different temperature settings for various times of the day or week to ensure comfort and save on energy costs.
Integration: Z-Wave thermostats can be integrated into a larger Z-Wave smart home ecosystem. This means they can work in concert with other Z-Wave devices such as smart lighting, security systems, and sensors. For example, you can set up "scenes" that automatically adjust the thermostat when you arm your security system or open a door.
Energy Savings: Z-Wave programmable thermostats often include features like occupancy sensors and learning algorithms. These features can help you save energy by automatically adjusting the temperature when the thermostat detects that no one is home or by learning your temperature preferences over time.
Compatibility: It's important to ensure that the Z-Wave thermostat you choose is compatible with your HVAC system. Some thermostats are designed for specific HVAC setups, such as single-stage or multi-stage systems, and may not work with all systems.
Installation: Depending on your HVAC system and wiring, installation of a Z-Wave thermostat may require professional assistance. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions and, if necessary, consult with an HVAC technician for proper installation.
In summary, a Z-Wave programmable thermostat is a smart home device that uses Z-Wave technology to provide remote control, energy savings, and integration with other smart home devices. It offers a high level of customization and convenience for managing your home's heating and cooling systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Using Zwave, can you remotely turn on/off the fan to manually recirculate air, or can you only set the temperature? Can you read the current temp |
Answer: | I don't know about the other software support. I use Nexia. Yes, you can read the current temperature, and set the target temperature. Yes, you can set fan modes: auto, on, cycle within the app. |
Question: | Is there a way to control temperature overshoot? thought 'indoor heat delta stage 1 off' would do it, but no options available on screen |
Answer: | Good question. Not sure. I would imagine there is a way to do that. There are many functions that are on sub menus that don't show on the screen in the picture but I have not done that myself. |
Question: | Can it work with Smart Things |
Answer: | I use it with my zwave home security system. I also can access it remotely through the alarm system app. |
Question: | Can I easily override the program with the z-wave controller or manually and will the thermostat resume its normal program automatically |
Answer: | I'd like to be able to change the thermostat to ESM (energy save mode) through z-wave. I don't see the option in HomeSeer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this thermostat control a z-wave outlet to turn on a plug-in heater at a set room temperature |
Answer: | I believe the short answer is "no" - However depending on what 'hub' you are using for automation, once you add this unit to your smart devices you might be able to set up an automation script where the hub would send the command to turn on the outlet for the plug in heater when the thermostat reaches a certain low temperature and turn it off when the temperature reported by the thermostat reaches a certain 'high' temp but would be done on the controller level - not within the thermostat. Hope this makes sense! I think you can do this within the smart things app if you are using that but would have to test and I don't have the smart outlet or a need to do this myself. |
Question: | Is this a standalone unit, or does it require connection to a hub |
Answer: | The beauty of this thermostat is it has a very simple user interface and it will work manually or connected to a z-wave hub. In manual mode, you do not have a scheduling function, but that's what you use a hub for. I have about 10 z-wave devices connected to a Wink hub (about $70) and set schedules through the app, which is a much better interface than, say, the touch screen interface on many of the Honeywell thermostats and doesn't cost a cent to maintain the schedules on the Wink cloud. So, if you don't care about schedules, it doesn't matter. If you do, then a setup like Wink is more universal and you won't be paying for extra thermostat features that you don't even use. |
Question: | Does it work with google home. if so what hub do i need |
Answer: | No, not directly as Google Home is not a zwave controller, you need a z-wave hub/controller first to control zwave devices. The only zwave controller that is compatible with Google Home at this time, is SmartThings hub, so if you have an ST and GH, yes they will work together. |
Question: | The manual says DO NOT USE batteries if you are using your house power (i.e. common 24V). Can you use batteries as a back up power source |
Answer: | There's not much reason to. If your furnace/AC has power, the unit would have power. If it doesn't, there's nothing for the thermostat to do because they won't turn on anyway. Its not a programmable thermostat, so there's no settings to lose. Your automation controller has to be the source of the schedule for this, so you'd just set it to recover the device when power came back on. That said, it probably won't hurt anything to have the batteries in there. The real issue is you do not want to join it to the Z-wave network using batteries if you're hard-wired, because it joins the network differently to conserve power. I suspect that's really why they say that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you program just the fan mode |
Answer: | Hi there, this unit REQUIRES an internet connection, based on a WiFi (wireless) connection. Once the device establishes an internet connection to the Honeywell cloud (which is cool!) you can effectively control the thermoostat from anywhere you have an internet connection.... even your smartphone. Enjoy! |
Question: | Is it smart enough to decide whether to run the heater or cooler to keep the temperature fixed |
Answer: | The WiFi setup requires you to create an account on mytotalconnectcomfort.com. It’s not that hard. The biggest problem with this thermostat is the unreliable remote connectivity ever since Honeywell spun off their thermostat division 6 months ago. Now it’s frequent periods of time where the thermostat will not respond to remote commands. It’s maddening |
Question: | What if i have a C wire |
Answer: | When you put it on circulate, the fan comes on for about 10 minutes every 20 minutes or so. The owners manual says it runs about 35% of the time. I used this feature this Fall with the system off (no heat or a/c) just to circulate the air through my Filtrete filters. |
Question: | Can you create a fan schedule? I’d like the fan to always run from 10pm until 6am |
Answer: | These thermostats are not the same. Even the screen is different. The RTH9580 doesn't have the 3D look of the 9300 series. |
