13 best underlayment pads
Underlayment pads are essential components in flooring installations, serving several important purposes in both residential and commercial settings. These pads are used in conjunction with various types of flooring materials and are categorized under underlayments, a vital aspect of the flooring industry. Here is some information about underlayment pads:
Sound Dampening: One of the primary functions of underlayment pads is to reduce sound transmission. They act as a barrier between the subfloor and the finished flooring material, absorbing impact noise and minimizing sound transfer between rooms or levels of a building. This is particularly important in multi-story buildings and apartments where noise control is essential.
Moisture Protection: Underlayment pads can provide a moisture barrier, preventing moisture from seeping up from the subfloor and damaging the flooring material. This is crucial in areas prone to high humidity or moisture exposure, such as basements or bathrooms.
Thermal Insulation: Underlayment pads can also offer thermal insulation properties. They help to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature by reducing heat loss through the floor, which can be especially important in colder climates.
Smooth Surface: Underlayment pads create a smoother and more even surface for the installation of flooring materials like laminate, hardwood, vinyl, or carpet. This helps to eliminate minor imperfections in the subfloor and ensures a more professional and aesthetically pleasing finish.
Impact Resistance: Some underlayment pads are designed to enhance the durability and impact resistance of the flooring above them. This is particularly useful in areas with heavy foot traffic or where the flooring may be subject to heavy loads.
Installation Ease: Underlayment pads often come with features like adhesive backing or interlocking mechanisms that make them easier to install. They can also provide a cushioned surface that makes it more comfortable to walk on the floor.
Compatibility: Underlayment pads are compatible with a wide range of flooring types, including laminate, hardwood, engineered wood, vinyl, tile, and carpet. They are available in different thicknesses and materials to suit the specific requirements of each flooring type.
Environmental Considerations: Some underlayment pads are eco-friendly, made from recycled materials or designed to be recyclable, reducing their environmental impact.
Code Compliance: In some building codes and flooring manufacturer warranties, the use of underlayment pads is a requirement to ensure proper installation and performance of the flooring.
In summary, underlayment pads play a crucial role in flooring installations by providing sound reduction, moisture protection, thermal insulation, and a smooth surface. They contribute to the comfort, durability, and longevity of various types of flooring materials, making them an important component in the construction and renovation of residential and commercial spaces.

Answer: | Yes underlayment provides great cushioning also provides a vapor and moisture barrior |
Question: | would this be good to use under 14.3mm thick laminate that already has the padding attached? laminate is being laid over vinyl floor |

User questions & answers
Question: | I plan to staple down 3/8" engineered flooring in the upstairs of a home over vinyl flooring. Will this underlayment work underneath |
Answer: | If your floor is level, just pull up the old vinyl, put down this underlayment, and float the floor. There were a few areas where I had to staple to the subfloor over this underlayment, and it worked just fine. It's not that difficult, and I am certainly not a pro. |
Question: | How is it different than roberts 70-193 super felt underlayment 360-feet square roll for sound reducing and absorbing ? Is it just bigger role |
Answer: | Hi There! The felt is going to have an stc rating of 66, will be 3mm thick and will be made of felt with the built in vapor barrier. The Roberts First Step underlayment is going to also be 3mm thick, with a stc rating of 67. This underlayment will be made up of two sheets of plastic with polypropylene foam beads in between those. Question: | Should you use both glue & nails for hardwood flooring with this type of underlayment with Bamboo hardwood 1/2 thick |
Answer: | I used under engineered hardwood which did not require glue or nails because it clicked together. I would think that you definately would not use glue. |
Question: | I'm investigating underlayment options for a floating, vinyl plank floor- mainly to add a little cushion- is this product suitable? If not, any sugges |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would an 8’ square rug pad work out ok for my 10’ rug so I don’t have to trim it |
Answer: | I have an 8’x10’ rug and I bought the 8’x10’ rug pad and it was a perfect fit and no trimming was needed. |
Question: | What is the return policy |
Answer: | As far as I know the return policy from Amazon is very good. They are always willing to work with their customers. I have returned a couple of things with no problem and very fast monitory return to my bank |
Question: | Ive got 2: my rug is 7'10" x 10' 2". whats the best size. when i vacuum, the rug pulls up. will the felt/rubber allow vac to operate correctly |
Answer: | I would buy the 8 x 10 (true to size) rug pad. You want the pad to be a little bit smaller to fit properly. You would probably want to trim the pad to 7’8” x 10’. I have these rug pads and they work very well and I vacuum with no problem. |
Question: | Will this pad disintegrate over time? My last one, not one from this company, literally turned to a green sand |
Answer: | I have had that happen with cheap rubber. I’ve had this pad only a few months and it seems to be mostly felt. I anticipate that this will last a long time. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be cut to size |
Answer: | this question is asked over and over here... and sometimes the seller answers to say they will cut it to size if you leave the dimensions in the 'gift' note. the one I bought says gift option is not available so I can't leave a note in that box. I believe because the one I bought is fulfilled by Amazon, not the seller. I'd prefer to have 'prime' and struggle with cutting it myself... some say its too hard, some say no problem... but why do the people that 'don't know' the answer, still answer !?? Pet peeve! |
Question: | Can you cut a 9 X12 pad slightly smaller |
Answer: | The seller will do this for you, at no additional fee. Just type the dimensions into the "gift message" box at the time of purchase. OR, if you already have this in your possession,it's easy to cut with a proper tool, for example: 1) a sheet rock knife, 2) a carpet knife or 3) WIRE CUTTER (this is what I used, and it was sooooo much easier than with my sheet rock knife. Best Wishes! |
Question: | Which side of the pad goes on the floor and which side faces the rug? There is a texture on one side of the pad. I'm wondering if it matters |
Answer: | http://www.rugpadcorner.com/2013/10/08/which-side-of-felt-rug-pad-goes-down/This smoother side is meant to be used up against the back of an area rug. The other side is a little fuzzier and softer and it goes against the hard floor. The reason for this is to prevent any scratching or damage to hardwood floors. It is argued that the smoother side provides a stiffer foundation for the back of the area rug, adding to the protection of the rug. Based on this, always place a felt rug pad softer side down against the floor. |
Question: | what side goes down? (on hardwood floors |
Answer: | The softer more plush side is what you want touching your floors. Neither side is harmful but softer side down.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used under tile flooring |
Answer: | No. |
Question: | how wide and how long |
Answer: | I only know one of its dimension(s). Item is approximately 45" wide. That's approximately 3.75ft wide. So at 100sqft, if i do the math, it should be about 2ft long. PS. rough estimate 3.75ft x 26ft |
Question: | Silver side up or down? One person said up and another says down |
Answer: | Silver side to contact cement foundation, silver acts like visquine (plastic) to help against moisture, black is designed to absorb sound and create padding between foundation and laminate flooring. |
Question: | Can this be used with vinyl plank flooring |
Answer: | It can but it will affect the installation of planks, planks need a solid surface to lay on otherwise you'll compromise all seams. |
- Increased room comfort: Room comfort is enhanced by The High-performance sound control and acoustic improving properties of the underlayment.
- Highest rated sound proofing: US tested and certified after passing the strictest acoustic tests (6” concrete slab without ceiling assembly) which guarantees optimal sound proofing.
- Enhances safety: Absence of VOC and other poisonous emissions makes the living space safer and more valuable. Natural product made in EU of pure wood fiber material without any glue additives. Easy to handle and install using commonly available household tools.
- Squeak-free floor: High compression strength protects the "click-lock" system of floors, ensures that the floor will not squeak, prevents "springy" effect when walking and increase floor longevity.
- Natural microclimate regulator: “Vapor Open” technology prevents conditions for mold growth under the floor. Being a natural and porous material, it can absorb 20% of its weight in water and thus prevent a minor leak from spreading.
User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to adhere this to the current brick paver floor or just lay it on top? If it needs to be adhered, what should I use |
Answer: | There is no need to to use an adhesive. You can simply lay our product on top of the existing floor and lay the finishing floor on top of it. For more comfort of installation, you can use small pieces of adhesive tape to connect the wood underlayment sheets with each other. However, if the gaps between bricks in your current brick paver floor are deeper than the thickness of the underlayment you want to use, we suggest you to level the existing floor first. Also, in order to avoid matching of gaps between bricks in your current brick paver floor with lock system of finishing floor, we suggest to lay down the underlayment with an angle against the gaps between bricks in the existing floor as it is written in our installation instructions (you can find a downloadable copy in our listing). We hope this helps you and feel free to reach out again with any other questions you might have. SunCo America Team |
Question: | Can you put down vinyl planks with peel off back (adhesive) on this |
Answer: | I do not recommend doing that as these are made out of compressed material. So if you glue any thing to it it will just fall apart |
Question: | I am installing evp or lvp flooring, will this underlayment be ok |
Answer: | Since vinyl isn't rigid like laminate or other wood type flooring I find out that cork maybe better option because of higher PSI sq ft especially when you use 1/4 option or more. Being this say manufacturer recommend this underlayment and I would use 1/8 version without blink of an eye. Simply I love it after I done laminate floor. |
Question: | Do you have to use a seperate vapor barrier over concrete floors when installing engineered wood floors |
Answer: | Dear rwm925,Thank you for your question! Vapor barrier should be installed ONLY if the the installation is in a basement that is very damp and humid, or a first floor of a house without a basement and also with the same moist conditions. If the floor you are working on is in upper floors, or not in a dry humid environment, vapor barrier is not needed. Also, vapor barrier might be needed if the concrete slab is newly poured, and it did not have enough time to cure and dry. Otherwise, by all means, use without any barrier. It will benefit your microclimate in the house. We hope this helps you and please feel free to let us know if you have any further questions. The SunCo America Team |
Product features
Benefit from the properties of the natural material
Fibers are bound together by “Lignin”, which is a wood resin that is secreted in the process of milling wood and acts as a binding agent of the wood fibers; a natural glue. This substance is responsible for the durability and sturdiness of the boards.
In order to produce a high-quality product made out of wood fibers, a very precise proportion of Lignin and length of the fibers is required. Only Pine and Spruce are suitable to be utilized in the production of these products.
Quality sound control
The high density of the wood fiber natural insulation means that it is also very effective at reducing both airborne sound like talking, music, traffic noise, and impact sound such as footstep, moving furniture, rain noise through walls, floors, etc.
High compression strength
Ability to hold pressure and not being "foamy", ensures that floor would not squeak at the joints. Underlayment should be solid and flexible rather than soft and elastic. It prevents "floating" and "springy" effect when walking, keeps the floors hard and sturdy under your feet. It also protects locks from breaking and prolongs life of your wood floor.
Compensates on minor unevenness in the concrete
Being somewhat flexible, but not soft, the Underlayment “coats” the bulges in the concrete on it’s bottom layer, remaining hard and sturdy on it’s top. Speed and ease up your installation process.
Installation that meets your needs
Implement solutions that work best for you. May be installed in two or more layers to raise up the level (if needed) or used as an additional sound insulation for walls or ceiling. Ideal for use with underfloor radiant heating systems.
Incredible sound insulating properties and air quality regulation
The wood fibers, like natural hair and wool, are hollow inside, which allows the internal capillaries to conduct water and air through the fibers. This process is responsible for the incredible heat and sound insulating properties of wood fiber materials as well as the Water Vapor Open feature. it is a "breathable material" that allows airflow to circulate.
It can retain moisture to up to 20%-25% of its mass. While the retention of moisture occurs, the fibrous material doesn't lose its thermo-physical properties and sound insulating qualities throughout the process.
It can adapt to changing moisture levels in the air in the space where it is installed. It also works as a natural indoor microclimate regulator in those spaces, due to its capability to absorbs excess moisture from the air, then releases it back when the air is dry. This process minimizes the possibility of stale smells by preventing conditions for mold and mildew growth under the flooring surfaces.
