13 best underlayment mats

Underlayment mats are materials used in flooring installations to provide additional support, insulation, moisture protection, and soundproofing. They are a crucial component in various types of flooring projects. Here's what you should know about underlayment mats:

  1. Purpose: Underlayment mats serve several purposes, depending on the type of flooring and the specific needs of the installation. Common purposes include:

    • Moisture Protection: Underlayment mats can act as a moisture barrier, preventing moisture from the subfloor from reaching and damaging the flooring material, especially in areas like bathrooms or basements.

    • Sound Reduction: They can reduce noise transmission between floors, making them a popular choice for multi-story buildings or rooms where noise reduction is essential, such as bedrooms or home theaters.

    • Insulation: Underlayment mats can provide thermal insulation, helping to keep floors warmer in colder climates.

    • Cushioning: Some underlayment mats offer cushioning and support, making floors more comfortable to walk on, which is especially important with hard flooring materials like tile or laminate.

  2. Types: There are various types of underlayment mats available, each designed for specific flooring applications. Common types include:

    • Foam Underlayment: This is a lightweight and cost-effective option. It provides basic cushioning and some soundproofing benefits. Foam underlayment is often used with laminate and engineered wood flooring.

    • Rubber Underlayment: Rubber underlayment is more durable and provides excellent soundproofing properties. It's commonly used in commercial spaces and areas where noise reduction is a top priority.

    • Cork Underlayment: Cork underlayment is a natural and environmentally friendly option. It offers good insulation and cushioning properties and is commonly used with hardwood and laminate flooring.

    • Felt Underlayment: Felt underlayment provides both soundproofing and moisture protection. It's commonly used with hardwood and engineered wood flooring.

  3. Installation: The installation process of underlayment mats varies depending on the type of mat and flooring material. Generally, the mats are rolled out over the subfloor, with seams and edges properly sealed or taped to ensure moisture protection. The flooring material is then installed on top of the underlayment.

  4. Considerations: When choosing an underlayment mat, consider factors such as the type of flooring you're installing, the subfloor condition, the room's purpose, and your budget. Some underlayment materials may be better suited for specific applications.

  5. Manufacturer Recommendations: Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific underlayment product you choose.Proper installation is crucial to achieving the desired benefits and ensuring the longevity of your flooring.

In summary, underlayment mats play a vital role in flooring installations by providing insulation, soundproofing, moisture protection, and comfort. Choosing the right type of underlayment mat for your project and following proper installation guidelines is essential for a successful flooring installation.

Radiant Floor Heating Mat System for Laminate and Wood Floor Heat, 120V, 15 Sqft, 3 ft x 5 ft

Based on 30 reviews Check latest price

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this under luxury vinyl tile? The lifeproof type with underlayment backing
Answer: If you want it to be waterproof, yes. If that is not a consideration, no. Also, I put the membrane down in one day, then left overnight to cure. I didn’t apply the tape until I was installing the tile. That is the way to avoid any raised/dried mortar at the seams. If applied the same day, it can be leveled more easily.
Question: Can this be used under ceramic tile
Answer: You should be able to. But you need to read the specs
Question: are these CSA approved?\
Answer: The printed side is up so you have a second extra layer of protection under the floor and have the grid for straight line cutting
Question: iIwould like to install this under a section of laminate flooring, but not entire 1800 sq ft. What underlayment could i use in the unheated areas
Answer: Am in Florida, so no basements here. But I did recently install it on our concrete base and it seems like it’ll be fine. Both sides are a moisture barrier built in. Perhaps for a basement adding a dedicated moisture barrier first would help

Why Choose ThermoFloor?

  • Safe and reliable FiberThermics heating elements mean peace of mind under combustible laminate and wood floors.
  • Complete solution – Subfloor, Noise Reduction, Mold and Mildew Resistance, Moisture Wicking, and Heating in one system.
  • Ready-To-Go – Simply roll out underlayment, make electrical connections, lay laminate or engineered wood, and enjoy your new warm floors.

How to Choose Your ThermoFloor Mats:

  • You can combine several, any-size mats to get the right total coverage.
  • ThermoFloor cannot be cut. Make sure you choose the mat sizes you need to fit your specific application.
  • Measure the area of the room and subtract any area with permanent fixtures or flat-bottomed furniture. Make sure the mat options you select will fit together without overlapping or cutting.
  • If you need help choosing your fit, please contact our support team.

  • Make sure you choose a single voltage option when purchasing multiple mats. 120V and 240V mats do not mix voltages connecting to one thermostat.
  • 120V – Use this variation if you have a room under 200 sq. ft.
  • 240V – Use this variation if you have a room over 200 sq. ft.

  • You will need one thermostat per 200 sq. ft. with a 120-Volt system and one thermostat per 400 sq. ft. with a 240-Volt system.
  • A 240-Volt system heats the same as 120-Volt, there is no need to use a 240-Volt on heated areas less than 150 sq. ft.
  • Fill any unheated area with 1/8" padding.

Why Choose Electric Radiant Floor Heat?

  • Directly warms the body, not the ceiling, so it feels warmer than forced-air or convective heat.
  • Warms from the floor up, unlike forced air heat that leaves the legs and feet cold.
  • Radiant floor heat is totally quiet. There are no noisy fans blowing warm air into the room.
  • No uncomfortable drafts because there are no fans blowing air.

Cleaner & Healthier

  • Cleaner, healthier and hypoallergenic because they eliminate the need for carpet.
  • No dirty vents or ducts that trap and circulate air with dirt, dust mites and allergens.
  • Helps to eliminate mold and mildew.
  • Electric radiant floors are maintenance free, so there are no dirty filters to change.

Saves Energy

  • Radiant heat feels 6-8 degrees (F) warmer than forced air. You can save an estimated 3-5% for every degree the thermostat is turned down.
  • Radiant heat does not rise to the ceiling, where an enormous amount of convective heat is wasted.
  • Utilizes 100% of supplied electrical energy to create warmth directly under the floor. No energy is expended operating fans or pumps.

Gauti Uncoupling Membrane 1/8" - 323 sq feet (3.3' x 98'5" ft) - Tile Underlayment - for Waterproofing and Crack Prevention (1x30m)

Based on 16 reviews Check latest price

Product description

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT: This uncoupling membrane has been designed and manufactured by Gauti, not Schluter. If you specifically require Schluter uncoupling membranes, please do not order this product. Thank you.

  • PREVENTS TILE CRACKS: Gauti Uncoupling Membrane has an open rib structure which allows for in-plane movement that effectively neutralizes the differential movement stresses between flooring and tiles. This completely eliminates a major cause of cracking and delamination on the tiled surface.
  • WATERPROOFING: The polyethylene composition of the Gauti Uncoupling membrane provides reliable waterproofing for indoor and outdoor applications. It protects the flooring from any moisture penetrating through the tiling surface.
  • LOAD DISTRIBUTION: The membrane provides a virtually incompressible layer within the tile assembly. The advantages of uncoupling are achieved without sacrificing point load distribution capabilities. The ability of the Gauti Uncoupling Membrane to support and distribute heavy loads while preserving the integrity of the tiled surface has been verified through extensive ANSI 108.10 compliant testing.
  • VAPOR MANAGEMENT: Excess moisture and vapor between the underside of the Uncoupling Membrane and the flooring is allowed to escape through the configured channels on the underside of the membrane. This prevents moisture and vapor from causing damage to the tiling layer above the membrane.
  • EASY INSTALLATION: Cut the Gauti membrane to size if required, then embed the anchoring fleece (which is laminated to the underside of the membrane) into an adhesive so that the entire surface is strongly bonded. Thinset mortar and laminate tape are recommended for a moisture sealed and crack-proof finish.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone what size and shape trowel should be used for installation
Answer: When placed on a solid foundation, columns or pillars can support tremendous loads. The same physical principle applies to DITRA installations. Column-like mortar structures are formed in the cutback cavities of the matting. Loads are transferred from the tile covering through these column-like mortar structures to the substrate. Since the matting is virtually incompressible within the tile assembly, the advantages of uncoupling are achieved without sacrificing point load distribution capabilities. The ability of DITRA installations to support and distribute heavy loads while preserving the integrity of the tiled surface has been verified through extensive laboratory and field testing, including applications exposed to vehicular traffic. - Schluter Systems

Question: Can somebody tell me the room diemensions that this would fit
Answer: The price has gone up but I wouldn't hesitate to purchase again if I needed it to protect my expensive floor installation.
Question: For basement gym should I get 1/2 or 3/4 inch mat

Question: Will this product hold up while doing burpees and such. The ones I have now are very cheap and when I push off the interlock part seperates
Answer: Some type of plastic with a thin layer of a felt material bonded to it. Doesn't seem toxic to me. Have used many times with no problems. Assume would be no more toxic than a plastic water bottle.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you lay this fabric down and have a truck roll over it to drop the aggregate
Answer: Yep!! Make sure you have somewhat of a solid base under the plastic fabric and all will be well. If you couldn't have the truck back over it you would have ONE TOUGH TIME getting the fabric under the rock after it is unloaded.
Question: If cut, so the edges fray? Can it be used a path in the garden without any mulch etc on top? It would only be down during the growing season
Answer: The edges do fray, but minimally. We covered ours with bark mulch in our garden walk way, but also placed it on a border between a low rock wall with lithodora hanging over and a neighbor's yard that is mowed with a riding mower. Works fine. We are pleased with the product, though after a couple years it is pierced by a few very persistent weeds. Our neighbors use it as a pathways in their large garden.
Question: is this product permeable
Answer: The fabric is woven. I have not seen any water stand on it.
Question: can this be used for weed barrier in a large home vegetable garden
Answer: I would sure think so - we bought to put under gravel for a road track, and I think a side benefit is that nothing (weeds) will grow in the road area where we have the fabric.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this product used for tile on concrete floors
Answer: I have the 1/2" gray and 1/2" black...textured 1 side only.
Question: Does this roll come w/any “Kerdi band” for the joints
Answer: Ok, this is going to involve math. :) The tiles are two feet by two feet. That's 4 square feet, so take the number of square feet in the package, and divide by 4. The 96 square feet package, for example, is 96/4=24. Thus, there are 24 tiles in the 96 square foot package. Measure the length and width of your room. If you don't want to cut a tile, round the length *down* to the nearest two feet. If your room is 13 feet 7 inches, round down to 12 feet. Then, since each tile is two feet square, divide that by two. You'll be able to fit up to six tiles along that 13 foot 7 inch wall without cutting anything. Do the same for the other wall. If you can fit six tiles along one wall, and four tiles along the other, you can fit up to 24 tiles in the room without cutting. If you instead want to cut the edges off of some tiles and go full wall-to-wall, round *up* to the nearest even number instead. So, that 13 foot 7 wall would round up to 14 instead. The rest of the procedure is identical with the dividing by two, measuring the other wall, etc.
Question: Is this design for heated floors
Answer: I would go with more (3/4). The 1/2 feels very thing and that extra 1/4" makes a big difference
Question: Can you use this product in place of concrete board in bath room for putting tile over
Answer: These are good to protects floors from barbell workouts, but they slip on (my) hardwood floors and separate with cardio movements like burpees.

User questions & answers

Question: Can we lay this over existing tile and then tile on top of it

Question: This goes above or below heating mat
Answer: you have to purchase everything separately, membrane comes by itself
Question: Does this item comes with heating element wires
Answer: Thinset mortar goes underneath, then the same is used again for the tiles after wires are laid.
Question: Does this product work with Heatwave cable
Answer: Schluter all set mortar for tile
