13 best basement underlayments
A basement underlayment is a crucial component in the installation of flooring within a basement. It serves as a layer between the subfloor and the finished floor material, providing various benefits such as insulation, moisture protection, and sound absorption. Here's a brief overview of basement underlayments and their key features:
Moisture Barrier: Basement underlayments often have a moisture barrier or moisture-resistant properties to protect the flooring above from potential moisture or water infiltration commonly found in basements.
Insulation: Many underlayments provide thermal insulation, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature and reduce energy consumption.
Noise Reduction: Basement underlayments can dampen sound and reduce noise transmission between floors, enhancing the acoustic comfort within the space.
Subfloor Protection: Underlayments act as a protective layer for the subfloor, preventing damage from spills, cracks, or other potential hazards.
Smooth Surface: Underlayments help to create a smooth and even surface, ensuring a proper and attractive installation of the final flooring material.
Material Types: Underlayments come in various materials, such as foam, rubber, cork, felt, or specialized engineered materials. Each material type offers distinct benefits in terms of insulation, soundproofing, and moisture resistance.
Installation Methods: Basement underlayments are typically easy to install, often coming in rolls or sheets that can be cut and laid out over the subfloor. Some may have adhesive backing or require additional adhesives for proper installation.
Compatibility: It's important to choose an underlayment that is compatible with the flooring material you intend to install. Different flooring types (e.g., hardwood, laminate, carpet) may require specific types of underlayments for optimal performance.
Cost and Durability: Consider the cost and durability of the underlayment, ensuring that it fits within your budget and offers the necessary longevity and protection for your flooring investment.
In summary, basement underlayments play a vital role in providing a suitable base for flooring in a basement environment. They offer protection, insulation, noise reduction, and moisture resistance to enhance the overall performance and longevity of the flooring installation. Choose an underlayment that meets the requirements of your specific flooring project and basement conditions.

Question: | I plan to staple down 3/8" engineered flooring in the upstairs of a home over vinyl flooring. Will this underlayment work underneath |
Answer: | If your floor is level, just pull up the old vinyl, put down this underlayment, and float the floor. There were a few areas where I had to staple to the subfloor over this underlayment, and it worked just fine. It's not that difficult, and I am certainly not a pro. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this "safe," are there chemicals on it, would it cause allergy, is it ok to be in the same room with it uncovered for extended time period, etc |
Answer: | Not sure why you would have it uncovered for extended period. We are just now installing for first time. Previous underpayment had no odor and once covered no odor year later. I think we will be just as happy with this brand |
Question: | If installing laminate on this, do you also need to use 6 mil plastic over the concrete before this |
Answer: | Yes- there is a vapor barrier element to this, but not like 6 mil plastic. Still need the vapor barrier. |
Question: | I have joint problems does this provide good cushioing or would i be better with a rubber underlayment |
Answer: | Yes underlayment provides great cushioning also provides a vapor and moisture barrior |
Question: | would this be good to use under 14.3mm thick laminate that already has the padding attached? laminate is being laid over vinyl floor |
Answer: | Since your laminate already has attached pad there is no need to provide an extra layer of underlay cushioning . However if moisture coming from your concrete subfloor is an issue then a standard vapor barrier plastic should be used (plastic sheeting without any foam underlay) |
Question: | Can any one please tell me how wide is this material |
Answer: | About 44” for the foam portion. There is excess plastic and adhesive to connect strips. |
Question: | can this be used under vinyl plank luxurious flooring |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used under the solid hardwood flooring, installed on top on vinyl floor? In other word, can this be put in the middle of vinyl and hardwood |
Answer: | there is a high chance that the vinyl becomes slippery due to the finished aluminum |
Question: | Can you hear the floor system russle when walking on it |
Answer: | Not at all. I've used various types of underlayment and this is by far my favorite. No noise, great insulation, and comfortable to walk on. |
Question: | Any reason not to use this with lvp with a pad already on the bottom of the plank |
Answer: | LVP tends to be very thin, with a very tiny click lock mechanism. I'd be concerned that too much padding may allow the planks to separate. It might be worth trying, though. While LVP walks a little quieter than Pergo, both products tend to walk a lot noisier than hardwood. A quality pad like this makes all the difference with Pergo. It makes the floor sound more solid, and a lot quieter. It should help out with LVP, as well. |
Question: | I am on the second floor and need quiet foot traffic. Will this help with that |
Answer: | Yes, the IIC rating is what most condo complexes now require to minimize noise transfer. Used it on several condo projects. Great pad. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it have an adhesive tape line |
Answer: | It does have it on one side, but it’s pretty worthless. It’s better and easier to just use tape(sub flooring tape/painters tape). |
Question: | How good is the sound proofing quality of this product |
Answer: | This is a thin and dense underlayment which is great because it eliminates that squishy feel some laminate floors have, but I would think the thinness and density may give it less soundproofing than other thicker underlayments |
Question: | can i use this on top of carpet floor to apply vinyl floating floor |
Answer: | I would not |
Question: | how to get rid of strong chemical smell from the pad |
Answer: | leave it on the floor green side up, after installing, for a couple of days to outgas. It's going under a water tight vinyl plank anyhow. You won't smell it after its installed. |
- Increased room comfort: Room comfort is enhanced by The High-performance sound control and acoustic improving properties of the underlayment.
- Highest rated sound proofing: US tested and certified after passing the strictest acoustic tests (6” concrete slab without ceiling assembly) which guarantees optimal sound proofing.
- Enhances safety: Absence of VOC and other poisonous emissions makes the living space safer and more valuable. Natural product made in EU of pure wood fiber material without any glue additives. Easy to handle and install using commonly available household tools.
- Squeak-free floor: High compression strength protects the "click-lock" system of floors, ensures that the floor will not squeak, prevents "springy" effect when walking and increase floor longevity.
- Natural microclimate regulator: “Vapor Open” technology prevents conditions for mold growth under the floor. Being a natural and porous material, it can absorb 20% of its weight in water and thus prevent a minor leak from spreading.
User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to adhere this to the current brick paver floor or just lay it on top? If it needs to be adhered, what should I use |
Answer: | There is no need to to use an adhesive. You can simply lay our product on top of the existing floor and lay the finishing floor on top of it. For more comfort of installation, you can use small pieces of adhesive tape to connect the wood underlayment sheets with each other. However, if the gaps between bricks in your current brick paver floor are deeper than the thickness of the underlayment you want to use, we suggest you to level the existing floor first. Also, in order to avoid matching of gaps between bricks in your current brick paver floor with lock system of finishing floor, we suggest to lay down the underlayment with an angle against the gaps between bricks in the existing floor as it is written in our installation instructions (you can find a downloadable copy in our listing). We hope this helps you and feel free to reach out again with any other questions you might have. SunCo America Team |
Question: | Can you put down vinyl planks with peel off back (adhesive) on this |
Answer: | I do not recommend doing that as these are made out of compressed material. So if you glue any thing to it it will just fall apart |
Question: | I am installing evp or lvp flooring, will this underlayment be ok |
Answer: | Since vinyl isn't rigid like laminate or other wood type flooring I find out that cork maybe better option because of higher PSI sq ft especially when you use 1/4 option or more. Being this say manufacturer recommend this underlayment and I would use 1/8 version without blink of an eye. Simply I love it after I done laminate floor. |
Question: | Do you have to use a seperate vapor barrier over concrete floors when installing engineered wood floors |
Answer: | Dear rwm925,Thank you for your question! Vapor barrier should be installed ONLY if the the installation is in a basement that is very damp and humid, or a first floor of a house without a basement and also with the same moist conditions. If the floor you are working on is in upper floors, or not in a dry humid environment, vapor barrier is not needed. Also, vapor barrier might be needed if the concrete slab is newly poured, and it did not have enough time to cure and dry. Otherwise, by all means, use without any barrier. It will benefit your microclimate in the house. We hope this helps you and please feel free to let us know if you have any further questions. The SunCo America Team |

Benefit from the properties of the natural material
Fibers are bound together by “Lignin”, which is a wood resin that is secreted in the process of milling wood and acts as a binding agent of the wood fibers; a natural glue. This substance is responsible for the durability and sturdiness of the boards.
In order to produce a high-quality product made out of wood fibers, a very precise proportion of Lignin and length of the fibers is required. Only Pine and Spruce are suitable to be utilized in the production of these products.
Quality sound control
The high density of the wood fiber natural insulation means that it is also very effective at reducing both airborne sound like talking, music, traffic noise, and impact sound such as footstep, moving furniture, rain noise through walls, floors, etc.
High compression strength
Ability to hold pressure and not being "foamy", ensures that floor would not squeak at the joints. Underlayment should be solid and flexible rather than soft and elastic. It prevents "floating" and "springy" effect when walking, keeps the floors hard and sturdy under your feet. It also protects locks from breaking and prolongs life of your wood floor.
Compensates on minor unevenness in the concrete
Being somewhat flexible, but not soft, the Underlayment “coats” the bulges in the concrete on it’s bottom layer, remaining hard and sturdy on it’s top. Speed and ease up your installation process.
Installation that meets your needs
Implement solutions that work best for you. May be installed in two or more layers to raise up the level (if needed) or used as an additional sound insulation for walls or ceiling. Ideal for use with underfloor radiant heating systems.
Incredible sound insulating properties and air quality regulation
The wood fibers, like natural hair and wool, are hollow inside, which allows the internal capillaries to conduct water and air through the fibers. This process is responsible for the incredible heat and sound insulating properties of wood fiber materials as well as the Water Vapor Open feature. it is a "breathable material" that allows airflow to circulate.
It can retain moisture to up to 20%-25% of its mass. While the retention of moisture occurs, the fibrous material doesn't lose its thermo-physical properties and sound insulating qualities throughout the process.
It can adapt to changing moisture levels in the air in the space where it is installed. It also works as a natural indoor microclimate regulator in those spaces, due to its capability to absorbs excess moisture from the air, then releases it back when the air is dry. This process minimizes the possibility of stale smells by preventing conditions for mold and mildew growth under the flooring surfaces.

Convenient weight and size!
Easy to store and work with. Can be installed by sections. Each package is 90 sqft, 15 sheets, 2x3'.

Our revolutionary Advanta Green laminate floor underlayment smoothest out little sub floor imperfections while quieting impact sound and floor to ceiling noise. Not only does it dampen ambient sound in the room it's installed in, but it also inhibits sound from traveling into the room below. Although it is promoted as an upgrade underlayment taking the place of poly foam, it doesn't carry a heavy upgrade price when compared to cork or rubber. On the other hand, in recent head-to-head Sound Transmission Loss tests, Advanta Green outperformed both cork and rubber in the majority of test band frequencies.

Answer: | Barely near 3mm, but the material quality is superior, compared to other brands that are double the price! |
Question: | Is the sound test rating available |
Answer: | Yes. I just bought it and installed it under mine and it worked out fine |
Question: | Can this be used under glue down luxury vinyl tile |
Answer: | If i remember right it was 48 inches. |
Question: | what is the length and width of this? Is it 40 inches wide |
Answer: | Yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hello, is this a suitable underlayment for stick-on vinyl tiles that are 1.2mm thick |
Answer: | No...this underlayment is a fiberboard and will have poor adherence to anything that has to stick to it. I used seam tape with my installation and the tape would easily loose adhesion due to the fibers dislodging from the underlayment and accumulating on the sticky surface of the tape. Otherwise, I am well pleased with products performance for my floating lvp floor. |
Question: | I need 3mm in addition to the 1/4 inch that the Steico underlayment provides. Can I use a 3mm foam vapor barrier underneath to make up the difference |
Answer: | The thicker the layers, the spongier they get. The more movement, the less wear. I think layer them would be a mistake. |
Question: | I'll be installing this on a concrete slab and want to know if I can use it in a bathroom underneath tile or marble floors |
Answer: | We recommend using our Underlayment under the floating floors. In the bathrooms, you can use it in places where there is no direct water exposure to the finishing surface. Our clients do install STEICO Underlayment under tile but we have not accumulated enough experience yet to recommend using it this way. |
Question: | I see that taping is an option for this flooring but is it better for the microclimate to not tape it |
Answer: | Hello! Since the underlayment is designed as Water Vapor system, it has an ability to "breathe" no matter if tape is there or not (air is going through all the surface). Tape might be used on joints if desired to fix the Underlay and prevent moving while installing, tape could be used on full length of joints, by small pieces or could be not used at all. |
Product features
Benefit from the properties of the natural material
Fibers are bound together by “Lignin”, which is a wood resin that is secreted in the process of milling wood and acts as a binding agent of the wood fibers; a natural glue. This substance is responsible for the durability and sturdiness of the boards.
In order to produce a high quality product made out of wood fibers, a very persice proportion of Lignin and length of the fibers is required. Only Pine and Spruce are suitable to be utilized in the production of these products.
Quality sound control
Meet the Building code with STEICO soundproof.

This process is responsible for the incredible heat and sound insulating properties of wood fiber materials as well as Water Vapor Open feature. it is a "breathable material" that allows airflow to circulate.
It can retain moisture to up to 20%-25% of their mass.
