What types of equines would get the most from a grazing muzzle?
Most horse owners have either had or known an “air fern” or “easy keeper" in their time; a horse who can’t even look at food without putting on weight. Horses, ponies, and donkeys who fit that description are at the top of the list of equines that would get the most out of a grazing muzzle. Even if they haven't shown any signs, they could still be at risk for laminitis. A 2015 study in the Journal of the British Veterinary Association estimated that 10-25% of all horses have insulin resistance or pre-laminitic metabolic syndrome.
Why is under-eating just as bad as over-eating for horses?
In nature, horses graze and move constantly in herds. Continuous grazing keeps their digestive tracts healthy and stomach acids level, constant roaming and movement keeps them physically fit, and socializing with herdmates gives them the community they need for their mental health. Isolating a horse in a stall or dry lot is unnatural for them and can lead to digestive, physical, and mental health issues. However, if they are at risk for laminitis, turning them out in the pasture can be even worse. So what do you do? Consider a grazing muzzle! You will want to keep a close eye on your horse for the first few weeks he is wearing the new muzzle to make sure it is fitting properly. Also, make sure that the muzzle fits into whatever water source your horse has access to in the pasture (there are issues with it fitting into certain types of automatic waterers). And finally, if you are leaving the muzzle on 24/7 you will want to consider adding salt to your horse's daily feed since they can't really access a salt block while wearing a grazing muzzle. | Answer: | No clue why you would ask this. Do you mean before or after animals have been licking it? It's salt. As far as I know 100% salt plus the natural minerals in it that make it pink and some others that don't. I think steaks have to be juicy to begin with, or they won't be juicy at all. Congrats. This is probably the most odd Amazon question ever! |
