14 best equestrian reins
Equestrian reins are an essential part of a horse's bridle and play a crucial role in controlling and communicating with the horse while riding. Reins are used by the rider to guide the horse, signal movements, and maintain contact. They are typically made from various materials, with different styles and lengths to suit various riding disciplines and preferences. Here are some key aspects of equestrian reins:
Materials: Reins can be made from various materials, including leather, nylon, rubber, and synthetic materials.Leather reins are traditional and popular for their durability and comfortable grip. Synthetic materials like biothane are also used for their easy maintenance and weather resistance.
Styles: There are different styles of reins, each with its own purpose and characteristics. Some common styles include:
Split Reins: These are two separate reins, one for each hand, and are commonly used in Western riding. Split reins provide precise control and are often longer.
One-Piece Reins: Also known as continuous reins, they are a single piece of rein that attaches to both sides of the bit. English riders frequently use one-piece reins for a consistent contact with the horse's mouth.
Draw Reins: These are adjustable reins that are used to encourage a horse to lower its head and neck. They can be controversial if not used correctly and are often employed in training.
Laced Reins: Laced reins have a decorative stitching pattern along their length, providing an extra grip for the rider.
Rubber Reins: Rubber reins have a rubberized or textured surface that offers a secure grip, even in wet conditions.
Webbed Reins: Made from webbing materials, these reins are lightweight and easy to clean, making them suitable for casual riding.
Length: The length of reins varies depending on the riding style. Western split reins tend to be longer, while English reins are generally shorter. The length affects the rider's ability to communicate with the horse effectively.
Attachment: Reins attach to the bit or bridle through buckles or snaps. Some reins have quick-release snaps for easy attachment and removal.
Grips: Many reins have hand grips or stops along their length to help the rider maintain a consistent hand position and contact with the horse's mouth.
Bit Attachment: Reins are typically attached to the bit rings through the use of rein snaps or buckles. The type of bit used can influence the choice of reins.
Color and Aesthetics: Reins come in various colors and designs to match the rider's preferences and style. However, traditional colors such as brown and black are common in formal riding disciplines.
Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance of reins are essential to ensure their longevity and effectiveness. Leather reins may require regular cleaning and conditioning, while synthetic reins are generally more low-maintenance.
Equestrian reins are a critical component of the rider's aids and communication with the horse. Riders should choose reins that are appropriate for their riding style and preferences and ensure they are in good condition for safe and effective riding. Proper use of reins, along with skilled riding techniques, is essential for a harmonious partnership between rider and horse.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be returned |
Answer: | In the past I have bought a 4 pack that was specific: each one said right on it which leg it was for. This most recent packet has just 2 rights and 2 lefts. I put them on all four legs, no problems, just be sure to put the lefts on the two lefts and the rights on the 2 rights. They work great, wouldn't take my horse out on a trail without them. |
Question: | What size scissor snaps would fit these reins |
Answer: | My order was received within a week of ordering. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the length of the reins |
Answer: | Legs vary you have to measure and size according to professional choice chart on their website. My 15.1 horse wears medium and my 15.2 horse wears large |
Question: | Are the fasteners pure brass |
Answer: | This does not come with bell boots |
Question: | Aren't these "pulley" draw reins supposed to come with the pulleys? Mine arrived yesterday without pulleys. I'm Bummed |
Answer: | If you are just wanting something to cover your horses legs for burrs I would recommend leg wraps and not boots. They go up the horses leg further and you could probably find them for cheaper. If you want these for the quick and easy convienece I wold see if you could find something cheaper, if you do not ride in burr covered areas all the time, or something that covers the leg a little more. Thanks! |
