I have the 14 oz and had the 16 oz for thai boxing on heavy bags and they hold up well but they are a little firm and not very soft. A 10 year old may do well with a lighter weight. Revgear I believe has a 12 oz which may be a little smaller which may work but in my opinion is not a soft glove.

Answer:	I'm not sure of the sand but I put water and it works just fine. It will also work with just dirt. But if u want sand I'm sure it will be like half a bag and you can get sand from lowes
