11 best tumbling media for brass

Tumbling media for brass is a specialized abrasive material used in the process of cleaning and polishing brass casings, primarily in the context of firearm ammunition reloading. This process is relevant to Tactical Personal Defense, Hunting, and Shooting Sports, as it ensures that spent brass casings are cleaned, resized, and polished for reuse, promoting firearm maintenance and recycling. Here's what you should know about tumbling media for brass:

  1. Purpose: Tumbling media for brass is employed to remove dirt, carbon residue, tarnish, and other contaminants from spent brass casings. It also helps to restore the casings to a shiny and uniform appearance.

  2. Materials: Tumbling media for brass is typically made from abrasive materials such as crushed walnut shells, corn cob grit, stainless steel pins, or ceramic media. Each type of media has its own advantages and is selected based on the desired level of cleaning and polishing.

  3. Cleaning Process: Reloaders place the spent brass casings into a tumbler along with the chosen tumbling media. The tumbler rotates, causing the media to rub against the brass casings, effectively removing fouling and debris. The duration of tumbling can vary, but it typically takes several hours to achieve the desired results.

  4. Benefits:

    • Improved Reloading: Cleaned and polished brass casings ensure smooth chambering and reliable firearm operation.
    • Aesthetics: Tumbling media restores the brass's appearance, making it look like new, which may be important to some shooters.
    • Recycling: By reusing brass casings, shooters reduce the cost of ammunition and contribute to environmental sustainability.
  5. Media Selection:

    • Crushed Walnut Shells and Corn Cob Grit: These organic media are gentle on brass and work well for general cleaning and polishing.
    • Stainless Steel Pins: Stainless steel pins are more aggressive and are particularly effective at removing tough carbon buildup.
    • Ceramic Media: Ceramic media strikes a balance between cleaning efficiency and brass preservation.
  6. Storage and Care: Tumbling media should be stored in a dry place to prevent moisture absorption, which can diminish its effectiveness over time. It can be reused multiple times before needing replacement.

  7. Safety: When handling tumbling media, it's important to wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection, to prevent exposure to fine dust and debris.

Tumbling media for brass is an essential component in the ammunition reloading process, ensuring that spent casings are cleaned, resized, and polished to maintain firearm performance and appearance. Shooters and reloaders often invest in quality tumbling media and equipment to support their reloading hobby or shooting activities.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the 'Grit' for this media - Thanks
Answer: It's ground up corn cob; I'd say around 40 grit?
Question: Can I clean jewelry/eyeglasses using this media in my tumbler
Answer: Hello, we do not recommended using the Frankford Arsenal Treated Corn Cob Media for cleaning eyeglasses. -Nichole
Question: Can someone post the weight of a cup of this media? I'm trying to get an idea of the volume of the various weights offered
Answer: A 3-1/2 gallon bucket equals about 15lb of media.
Question: Would this work for Nickle
Answer: If you mean nickel-plated brass - yes, it works great!
Question: the picture makes the product round.. is it round or square
Answer: It's more of a rectangle with rounded corners.
Question: is it collasable
Answer: The inside is a removable hard white plastic box(almost like a sm bathroom garbage container). Great for cleaning or to protect the actual cooler...but not for collapsed glass. So don’t think so, as the frame is pretty stable. I work at a large aquatic center and carry everything I need for work in it. I think I got this one 3 or 4 years ago and other than alittle wear on the wheels it still looks new.
Question: Will this fit in an airplane overhead compartment
Answer: Yes, but I usually "check" it at the gate for free....saves me from having to haul it all over more airports. I LOVE this luggage...holds alot and is very sturdy!!!
Question: Is this coolers removable liner made of a hard plastic insert or could it leak on floor if ice melts
Answer: It is a hard plastic. I put ice in it for 12 hours. When I got home I took the liner out and dump the water. No leak

The key feature is the unique dimension of the pin media - 0.047” diameter by 0.255” length (tolerance < ±5%). guntap only offers this size pin since it does not get jammed in primer pockets or flash holes, making the clean-up process quick and easy.

Brass Shine Powder Detergent In-Depth

Brass Shine is guntap's unique formulation that is unrivaled by the alternatives, whether it be a homemade concoction, or a competitor's product. Our product was made by reloaders for reloaders.

Ideally suited for Stainless Steel Tumbling Media in a wet rotary tumbling system, it can be used in a magnetic tumbler, and some have had excellent results in an ultrasonic cleaner. Since everyone has a different setup, we provide suggestions on where to begin, but you'll eventually find what works best in your situation.

The powdered nature of the detergent makes it as concentrated as possible without dilution. In addition, the chemicals used in Brass Shine are designed to clean your brass as thoroughly as possible in the least amount of time. Using products like dish soap will give you average results with a ton of foam to clean up afterwards.

Do it right the first time: use Brass Shine for consistently excellent and predictable results with the shortest amount of clean up time.

Directions for Proper Cleaning

  • Using the included scoop, reference the suggested dosages below for how much detergent is needed to thoroughly clean your brass
  • Use warm/hot water
  • Do not overload your tumbler as your brass will require additional cleaning cycles and premature motor failure may occur
  • If excessive foaming occurs, use less detergent next time
  • Once brass is clean, rinse by hand, or run a clean water rinse cycle

Suggested Dosages

Suggested Dosages - you will fine tune based on your set up:

  • For 1 qt drum: Use 1/2 quart of warm water and 1 tsp for lightly soiled brass or 2 tsp for heavily soiled brass
  • For 1 gal drum: Use 2-3 quarts of warm water and 1 tbsp for lightly soiled brass or 2 tbsp for heavily soiled brass

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this clean live ammunition
Answer: I've cleaned live .22 shells that were lead tips and it worked well, not perfect but good enough to shoot. put 250 rounds in tumbler at a time n checked in 4 hours, but may take longer depending on how bad. hope this helps.
Question: Can it be used for sterling silver jewelry? Is it pre-treated with rouge
Answer: I see no reason why this compound cannot be used for polishing sterling silver jewelry. The compound is treated with a fine polishing compound(1000-2000 mesh) in a mixture non-reactive chemicals , in fact, as the compound is used, you must add it back to the mass. If you look into the literature you will note that fact yourself. It is compound that will not attack brass, so it is "OK" for the sterling. The same alloying elements that are used in brass are also used in sterling. When chemicals are used to polish metal alloys, thy must be chosen so they do not react with those elements and not necessarily the basis metal, which in the case of Sterling Silver, it is the silver itself.
Question: Dumb nube question. What are the two different medias use for. Is one better for polishing and one for cleaning? I usually pick up dirty range brass
Answer: From my experience, treated walnut tends to clean dirty brass well but they come out rather dull. The corn cob makes it shiny but doesn't clean as well. My walnut also seems to load up fairly quickly. (I reload a lot)
Question: How well does it clean primer pockets
Answer: 20 years experience tells me FIRST deprime, then clean with dove soap and water in rotary tumbler and stainless steel media; then shine/polish with vibratory tumbler first choice corn cobs with 3/4 a capful of NuFinish added per load. "NuFinish Once a year car polish" will keep the shine. NoLube sizing dies love that light coat of NuFinish. Before I discovered steel media, I liked pet store Lizard Litter for vibrator cleaning and cost. When you're done, admiring your like new brass... be sure and inspect EVERY primer hole/pocket for stuck media... whatever kind you use for cleaning/polishing. Steel media is the absolute best cleaner... but certain media/brass combinations are bad actors for leaving a pair of media pieces stuck in a primer hole. Any dry media likes to find a home in primer pockets, take a few extra turns on the media separator. I inspect while priming. BE SAFE OUT THERE GANG.

User questions & answers

Question: Fa walnut media 18 pounds for $16.99 free shipping w prime xtra shiping time. however further down the item ships at 8.4 # what is correct weight
Answer: Mine was 18 pounds. I used it today, worked real good. A bit finer then other media I have used but worked well.
Question: The description says walnut but the details say corn cob. Which is it
Answer: John, this media is a finely ground walnut. It cleans the brass in less time than corn cob, but is a little bit dustier.
Question: What size grit is it
Answer: It is about three times the size of a grain of sand. Some just a little bigger.
Question: Do you need media polish with this like corn
Answer: Yes, I use about 1/2 teaspoon of red jeweler's rouge and 1-2 tablespoons or so of mineral spirits in a typical tumbler charge. Leave cover off for "drying" 1/2 hour then add your brass. The Mineral spirits binds the rouge to the media and cuts down on dusting.

The key feature is the unique dimension of the pin media - 0.047” diameter by 0.255” length (tolerance < ±5%). guntap only offers this size pin since it does not get jammed in primer pockets or flash holes, making the clean-up process quick and easy.

PLEASE NOTE: Although the pins are compatible with almost all common brass cartridges, certain cartridges that use a 25 caliber or 6.5mm diameter projectile can have some pins stuck sideways inside the neck. Keeping cartridges unsized when cleaning will help mitigate this issue.

guntap Brass Shine Powder Detergent

Brass Shine Powder Detergent is specifically formulated to clean brass cartridges and other metal parts with minimal foaming in a rotary or magnetic tumbler using guntap Stainless Steel Tumbling Media pins.

Brass Shine utilizes a proprietary formulation that is specifically designed to clean metals. Most homebrew recipes use dish soap, which is designed to clean your dishes, not your brass. Using common household chemicals results in poor and inconsistent results. Brass Shine, on the other hand, features:

  • Biodegradable ingredients to minimize harm to the environment
  • Minimal foaming make clean-up quick and easy
  • Concentrated formulation means less waste and better results
  • Each pound of detergent can create 25 gallons (or more) of cleaning solution
  • Scoop is included with each bag to eliminate any measurement errors

CAUTION: Keep out of reach of children. May be harmful if ingested or inhaled. If skin contact occurs, rinse areas thoroughly with clean water. MSDS available upon request.

Stainless Steel Tumbling Media In-Depth

Manufactured and packaged in the USA, helping to support small business and the domestic economy.

Created from the highest quality 302/304 stainless steel wire sourced from a US-based steel mill with certificates of conformance.

Every guntap pouch is stamped with a lot number to trace the origin and chemical content of the pins. This is unlike the inferior imported stainless media sold by others.

Easy to Use and Lasts a Lifetime

Ferromagnetic 300-series stainless steel that is attracted by a magnet (but not magnetic itself, nor is it a 400-series stainless), making for easy pick up with the guntap Pin Sweeper.

guntap Stainless Steel Tumbling Media allows for virtually unlimited tumbling cycles with brass cartridges, so there's no need to replenish your media due to breakdown, unlike walnut, corn cob, or ceramic media.

Amount of Media Required for Tumblers

  • One Quart Drum: Between 1 and 1.5 pounds of media
  • One Gallon Drum: 5 pounds of media
  • Homemade Tumbler: 5 pounds per gallon of drum volume
  • Cement Mixer: No less than 50 pounds, preferably 75 to 100 pounds

  • Per 1 gal water: Use 1 tsp + 1 tbsp for lightly soiled brass or 2 tsp + 2 tbsp for heavily soiled brass

Manufacturing Products for Reloaders

For handloaders, cleaning your brass cartridges is one of the keys to ensuring consistent loads. With vibratory tumbling, your brass might look clean on the outside, but on the inside, it's just as dirty as before you started.

With guntap's combo of Stainless Steel Tumbling Media and proprietary Brass Shine Detergent, your brass cartridges will look like new again. The Pin Sweeper will quickly gather your pins to get your ready for your next cleaning session.
