11 best deer food plots

Deer food plots are areas of cultivated vegetation specifically planted to attract and provide a supplemental food source for deer and other wildlife, particularly in hunting and wildlife management contexts. These plots are strategically planted to benefit deer populations and enhance hunting opportunities. Here's what you should know about deer food plots:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of deer food plots is to provide a consistent and nutritious food source for deer throughout the year. This is especially important during periods when natural forage may be scarce, such as late fall and winter.

  2. Types of Plants: Deer food plots are typically planted with a variety of crops that are attractive to deer. Common plant species include:

    • Clover: Various types of clover, such as ladino, red, and white clover, are popular choices due to their high nutritional value and attractiveness to deer.
    • Soybeans: Soybeans provide a high-protein food source and are often planted in larger plots.
    • Wheat and Oats: These cool-season grains are valuable for early-season hunting and late-season forage.
    • Brassicas: Plants like turnips and radishes are planted for their nutritious tubers, which are especially attractive to deer in late fall and winter.
    • Corn: While corn is not as nutritious as some other options, it is a high-energy food source that can attract deer.
  3. Location: Food plots are strategically located in areas frequented by deer, such as travel corridors, bedding areas, or near water sources. Proper placement is critical to attract and retain deer on your property.

  4. Size and Shape: Food plot size and shape can vary depending on the available land and local deer populations. Smaller plots are easier to maintain, while larger plots can sustain more deer.

  5. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep food plots productive. This includes mowing, fertilizing, and controlling weeds. Many hunters also use game cameras to monitor deer activity in and around the plots.

  6. Hunting Strategy: Deer food plots can be integral to a hunting strategy. They create focal points for deer activity, making it easier for hunters to set up blinds or tree stands nearby.

  7. Wildlife Management: In addition to providing benefits for deer hunting, food plots can contribute to overall wildlife habitat improvement. They can attract other wildlife species and enhance biodiversity.

  8. Legal Considerations: Hunters should be aware of local hunting regulations regarding the use of food plots, including planting times, crop types, and baiting restrictions.

  9. Costs and Investments: Establishing and maintaining deer food plots can be an investment of time and money. Costs can include seed, equipment rental, and ongoing maintenance.

In summary, deer food plots are cultivated areas planted with specific crops to provide deer with a supplemental food source and improve hunting opportunities. These plots require careful planning, maintenance, and strategic placement to effectively attract and benefit deer populations, making them a valuable tool in wildlife management and deer hunting.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you plant this in late july or early August
Answer: I would plant in spring. The seeds listed are for spring plantings, not late summer or fall. However, the instructions aren’t shown (back of bag) in the photo, and I planted this years ago so I have no label to look at. I do remember this is a good product and it produced a good food plot. If you have a warm season late into the year I suppose you could try to plant it, but here in July and August we get little rain and a lot of heat which would not produce a good crop at all.
Question: I am looking for a seed mix that rabbits would like, would they like this
Answer: Probably, it's a mixture of clover with rye grass it's very easy to plant and comes up well
Question: will this groe in lowe sun light
Answer: The grass grew well for me in low light but the rest did not. That being said I had two shooter bux four smaller bux and a doe family mowing it down. If you are unsure use some Durana clover. It's able to tolerate low light and grow well. I would use it with the throw n grow
Question: Why does bag in ad say covers 22,000 sq and bag you receive says covers 11,000 sq
Answer: Their picture does not match the actual product. Evolve does make a $22,000 square foot bag which is twice as expensive when I saw that I thought I was getting a real deal but it turned out to only be the 11,000 sqft. It is a good product easy to plant and comes up well it's $9.99 at Walmart

Winter peas are cold tolerant and will continue to grow through winter into late spring. Winter peas grow rapidly and are sweet as soon as they pop out of the ground.

Forage clovers selected for this blend grow up to 16 inches tall and can withstand tough growing conditions.

BioLogic Deer Radish Food Plot Seed, 2lb (Plants 1/4 Acre)

Bio Logic

Based on 275 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Biologic's DEER-RADISH is a blend of two different varieties of radishes and a small percentage of New Zealand Brassica and can be planted by itself or added to Biologic seed blends to further increase attraction. Through our research we’ve determined Biologic's DEER-RADISH’s are among some of the most attractive food plots available. Whitetails love the highly nutritious forage and the long, sweet, nutrient packed roots making this plant 100% consumable. Biologic's DEER-RADISH creates one of the most attractive food plots available. When to Plant: DEER-RADISH is very hardy and will germinate in drier conditions than other common food plot crops; however, there must be some soil moisture available. Soil moisture is more critical than temperature. Plant early August in the North, and early September in the South. ?How to Plant: DEER-RADISH is best planted by spreading the seed on a well-prepared seed bed at 8lbs per acre. If possible use a cult packer to help cover the seed and ensure good seed to soil contact. Broadcasting the see on a well-prepared seedbed just prior to a rain also produces an excellent stand as the rain serves to bury the seed the appropriate depth (1/4 inch) and ensures adequate soil moisture for germination. Disking is not a recommended method of covering the seed, as it will bury the seed too deep to allow germination. DEER-RADISH can be used to top-dress existing clover stands, adding several tons of nutritious forage during the fall. A mechanical grain drill is also an excellent method of planting.

From the Manufacturer

BioLogic's DEER-RADISH can be planted by itself or added to BioLogic seed blends to further increase attraction. As an added benefit, the deep penetrating roots help bust through tough hard pans and help rejuvenate soils. Through our research we've determined BioLogic's DEER-RADISHES are among some of the most attractive food plots available. Whitetails love the highly nutritious forage and the long sweet, nutrient packed roots making this plant 100% consumable. Radishes produce glycosinolate compounds, which can reduce weeds and nematodes and are an excellent choice for claiming new soil to your food plot program without having to use excessive glyphosate based products. BioLogic's DEER-RADISH creates one of the most attractive food plots available.

  • Extremely Attractive and Nutritious
  • Fast Germinating, Fast Growing and Long Lasting for UNBELIEVABLE ATTRACTION
  • A deadly combination of forage and roots deer can't resist

Question: With correct soil p.h. can this be frost seeded in February in Washington state with good results
Answer: They go on the bottom of the white cushion seat and the blue seat. Makes the cushion removable and cleaning the seat easy. But honestly this is by far the easiest potty chair ever to clean! I’m a neat freak and have tried many different kinds with my kids. This is the best!
Question: does Imperial Whitetail Clover need an inoculant applied before planting
Answer: I suppose it could fit. In it’s description, “Suit for most standard toilets. Except the square shape or the height of your toilet is over 16" from the ground”. mine is 16 and it fits.
Question: I'm in central florida .... will this grow if planted in early November and last throught the winter ? Can it handle shady area's
Answer: Mine are more oval and fit perfect. I think the only toilet it won’t fit will be a square toilet. Some people said they had issues with height of the toilet for it not fitting. My toilets are all a little less than 16 inches from bottom to toilet seat. So, these work perfect. And I LOVE them! Very sturdy, easy to put together and easy to fold up when not using.
Question: Im from central texas if i plant in spring will it last throughout fall and winter months
Answer: The dimension of the potty training seat is as below FYI: the width from side to side is 16 cm (6.3 inches), the length from front to back is 23 cm (9 inches).

The weight of the clover seeds will contain approximately 34% coating material that contains the inoculant and water holding material for better establishment and viability of the seed. There is no difference in the seeding rates between the coated and raw seed due to the increased germination and viability of the bulk clover seeds that are coated and inoculated.

User questions & answers

Question: Planted in early march, no signs or growth or germination. When should I expect germination? Soil test and prep were completed per instructions
Answer: Tom, there are no spring planting dates recommended for central TX due to the early heat and dry weather. The clover will not have time to get a root system developed that can survive your average summer. My recommendation would be to get a lab soil test to be sure your soil pH is correct ASAP and add any lime called for this spring and thoroughly disk it into the soil. This will give the lime time to correct the pH before you plant in the fall. You also should consider planting Fusion. It's a blend of Whitetail Clover and our WINA forage chicory. This blend is more drought tolerant in dry climates due to the deeper root system the chicory develops.
Question: Will this grow in central texas
Answer: Fusion is not designed for really sandy soil. Does very well on medium to heavy soil. Whitetail inst. has some good annual mixes for sandy soil. Most are fall planted. Pure Attraction, WinterGreens and Ambush all work well on thin soil
Question: can alfa-rack be fertilized after it,s 4 or 5 inches tall
Answer: Thank you for your question about the Whitetail Institute Fusion (Perennial) Clover & Chicory Food Plot Seed (Spring and Fall Planting). According to the manufacturer, 'Fusion should not be planted in low light areas. It requires 6-8 of direct sunlight to achieve desired results. Whitetail offers No-Plow, Secret Spot and Bow Stand annuals for areas with filtered sunlight such as woods that receive some sun reaching the ground through the canopy." Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you again, and have a wonderful day!
Question: How late can you plant this? I just cleared my plot out and it's June 23. Was hoping to have it ready for this season
Answer: 1.5 acres

User questions & answers

Question: Is there an additional cost to mail in or is postage included in the price of the kit
Answer: dont wast your time with this company or its product. i never received the results back and they didnt return any calls or mssgs.
Question: Can this be used to determine "soil percolation" capabilities of a person's yard ? Can it tell makeup % of clay, sand, loam, organic
Answer: I don't think so. If you would like to know about the percolation rate of the soil in your yard, the most reliable method is a field measurement where you dig a hole in the soil and fill it with water. Return every few hours to monitor the rate at which the water level goes down. I recommend staking a cheap yard stick in the hole. It is relatively simple to calculate the percolation rate in inches/hour. Ideally, this would be done when the surrounding soil is moist, so you should refill the hole a few times and use the percolation rate from the third filling. Alternatively, wait for the rainy season. If you would like to know the distribution of particle sizes in your soil, you might try a basic "jar test". All you need is a jar and water. This will give you a very rough idea about the texture of your soil.
Question: Does the envelope need a stamp
Answer: Yes, you will have to buy a priority mail stamp for about seven bucks
Question: Does it test for sulfur
Answer: Thank you for your question about the Whitetail Institute Laboratory Soil-Test Kit. According to the manufacturer, "No, this test does not test for Sulfur, but it does test for other nutrients like Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), and Magnesium (Mg)." Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you again, and have a wonderful day!

Product features

Ensure a Successful Food Plot

Testing your soil is the MOST IMPORTANT STEP for ensuring food plot success. It ensures the most attractive, nutritious, and productive food plot possible.

Whitetail Institute's Soil Test Kit is very easy to use and everything that you need is included.

Furthermore, you will receive your results by mail or email within one week. The results are very easy to understand as well.

Learn About Your Soil

Not all soils are the same. Some soils are heavier, some are lighter, and some hold lime and fertilizer longer than others.

Most high-quality forages grow best in soils with a neutral soil pH between 6.5 and 7.5. If soil pH is below that (and most fallow soils are), nutrients are bound up in the soil and the plants cannot access them. In this instance of the pH being below 6.5, you would need to add lime to raise the soil pH level. Without a Soil Test Kit, you would not know how much lime and fertilizer are needed to ensure the greatest health of your forage.

Make Informed Decisions from the Results

Different types of forages have different fertilizer requirements.

The scientific precision of the Whitetail Institute's Soil Test Kit allows you to make informed decisions on how much fertilizer and which kinds are needed.

This is because a laboratory soil test such as Whitetail Institute's Soil Test can tell you very precisely what your existing soil nutrient levels are. You will be able to see how much Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), and Magnesium (Mg) are in your soil. With all of this information, you will be able to move forward with confidence knowing you are really providing your soil with what is needed so that in turn your soil can provide you with the best possible forage.

Save Money and Time

Whitetail Institut's Soil Test Kit tells you exactly how much lime and fertilizer is needed for optimum results (saving you the time you might have spent trying to guess how much is needed) and makes sure you don't buy more than you need.

It also ensures that your money is not wasted.

For example, let's say the soil pH in your plot is 5.0, which is highly acidic. If the soil pH is below 6.5 then the nutrients in the soil are bound up and the plants cannot access them. If you fertilize and plant without adding lime to raise the soil pH first, the plants will only be able to access about half of the nutrients in the fertilizer you put out. That means that however much you spent on fertilizer, you just wasted half of your money. A soil test can prevent this from happening.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it say when to plant
Answer: Two pounds is supposed to plant about 1/4 of an acre.
Question: What plants grow? I see a mix of greens but what is it clover, brassicas, rye, etc
Answer: When to Plant: DEER-RADISH is very hardy and will germinate in drier conditions than other common food plot crops; however, there must be some soil moisture available.  Soil moisture is more critical than temperature.  Plant early August in the North. Food plot size may also have an affect if the deer will eat and damage the plant before the season, but if you can put up a temporary barrier you should be fine.
Question: If one is $19.98, why are two $99.90? Is the two pack a different size bag? Are the pictures generic pictures that don't reflect the actual weight
Answer: the bulbs grow very bushy an big an it depends on how big a bag u use an how heavy u put it out to grow u should mix this product with oats or wheat makes a great plot
Question: Does it say when to plant
Answer: I planted in September in South Arkansas. I had a good stand before the first frost and then it was mowed to the roots by the deer.
