User questions & answers
Question: | What’s the difference between the regular slx and the slx xt? what’s the xt |
Answer: | I just stuck one side to the surface I was taping then rolled at the end of the paper covering until it came up. Then I stuck the second surface to the exposed sticky. It was pretty easy but I was using it to wrap gifts. It worked really well for that. |
Question: | What rod can I use for both Flounder and Bass |
Answer: | I only used it for gift wrapping. It would probably work on patches but not permanently. My guess. |
Question: | New rrel for me. Has been awhile since i used a baitcaster. Can someone help explain each part of the reel to hone in my skills. Or a video or manual |
Answer: | It was hard to remove the "down " side from formica, the up side did not stick well. My guess is removal from cloth might be a challenge. |
Question: | Are these right hand or left hand? it doesn't say anywhere |
Answer: | The answer to your question is I don't know BUT...do not buy Amazon basics. It does not stick worth a dodo. And the cutter doesn't work! I had to trash mine and ordered the scotch again. Scotch is darn good double sided tape. |
Product features
SHIMANO STABLE SPOOL DESIGN (S3D)
Shimano's S3D technology leads to significantly reduced spool vibration. By designing a balanced and uniform thin wall aluminum constructed spool, S3D creates an incredibly smooth feeling when casting and retrieving lures.
SUPER FREE SPOOL
SF was designed to eliminate friction on the spool shaft during the cast. In standard baitcasting reels, when the clutch bar is pressed down, the pinion gear is freed and actually can drag on the spool shaft creating friction that can limit the length of a cast. With SF the pinion gear is supported by a ball bearing so that when the clutch is disengaged in preparation for a cast, the pinion gear and spool shaft are kept in perfect alignment. The result is zero friction upon the spool shaft.
HAGANE BODY
The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body stiffness and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing. The result transforms the angler's actions directly into cranking power. It's efficiency through strength.
SVS INFINITY
The SVS Infinity provides easy-to-manage, consistent spool control and brake force. With brake weights that use inner friction against the raceway during the cast, SVS Infinity controls spool speed for precision casting especially when using lighter lures. The external adjustment knob provides for quick, precise adjustments for either the conditions or when you switch baits.
- Gear ratio: 6.2:1, Weight: 7.6 ounce
- Mono Line Capacity (lbs/yd): 8/180, 10/155, 14/110
- PowerPro Line Capacity (lbs/yd): 30/190, 50/120, 65/80
- Line retrieve per crank: 26 inch
- Max. dragforce: 11 lbs, Bearings: 6 S A RB and 1 Rollerbearing

Product features
MICRO MODULE GEAR
The Micro Module Gear System creates a smooth retrieve. The new gear set makes use of smaller teeth and more of them. This means that there are more contact points between the drive gear and pinion gear. The result is a more efficient gear train with less gear feel.
X-SHIP
X-Ship provides improved gear durability. By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings, the pinion gear maintains precise alignment with the drive gear. This means the gears will stay in the same position under the heaviest loads. The added benefit is that friction between the spool shaft and gear are eliminated. This will enhance the casting performance of the reel with lighter lures, and allow for longer casts.
CI4+
The new CI4+ is the next generation of Shimano's CI4 material and 250% stronger. It is over one and a half times stronger than Shimano's normal XT-7 graphite and is over 20% lighter. Because it does not contain metal, it is also impervious to rust. So, as a result of its strength and weight, it allows Shimano to create an extremely lightweight reel with very precise tolerances.
SUPER STOPPER
Super Stopper anti-reverse uses a one-way stainless steel roller bearing that eliminates back-play. This provides the angler with instant hook setting power.
A-RB
These stainless steel ball bearings are specially treated to drastically increase the corrosion resistance of the bearing. These bearings will last at least 10 times longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings in high salinity environments.

Product description
An addition to the highly-touted family of SLX reels, the SLX MGL 70 features Shimano’s low inertia MGL Spool in a compact 70-size reel. The MGL Spool excels in the castability of both finesse and heavy lures, while the compact size of the SLX MGL 70 makes it a perfect reel for light-line applications as well as flipping and pitching. But don’t count the SLX MGL 70 out in heavy-cover situations because of its compact size, the Cross Carbon Drag provides more than enough stopping power to keep trophy bass out of the trees. The SLX MGL 70 incorporates Shimano’s SVS Infinity Braking System to increase casting distance and enables anglers to achieve the ideal cast by easily making adjustments from the palming side plate to match changing weather conditions or casting a variety of lures. Just like the rest of the SLX family, the SLX MGL 70 is built with the same tournament-ready, rigid HAGANE Body for increased durability and a lifetime of performance.
- HAGANE Body: The HAGANE Body is a metal reel body with high rigidity. The body rigidity and impact resistance virtually eliminates body flexing. The result transforms the angler's actions directly into cranking power. It's efficiency through strength.
- MGL Spool III: An ultra-thin spool that thoroughly pursues low inertia. The spool has a reduction in inertia by about 15% compared to the second-generation MGL Spool by using a narrow shape with a width of 19 mm for the outer diameter of 34 mm. Resulting in unparalleled casting performance.
- SVS Infinity: Shimano's newest innovation in brake system technology, SVS Infinity provides easy-to-manage, consistent spool control and brake force. User questions & answers
Question: | Is the reel the same size in dimensions as the standard SLX models or is it smaller |
Answer: | 200 series are right handed “reel with right hand” 201 series are left handed” reel with left hand |
Question: | Is this considered a bfs (bait finesse system) reel |
Answer: | I use main braid and add about a ten foot fluro leader. However it depends what gear ratio you bought and what you are using the reel for. For the 7.4.1 I use 30 lb braid 12-14 lb fluro leader. I use this for all my jig set ups, rattle traps, spinner/ chatter bait ect 8.5.1 I’d use 50-65 lb braid for topwater frogs and for pitching and flipping into grass and pads. Also a heavier leader for clearer water but still to do the same technique17-20 pound fluro or 20 lb mono for a top water spook, popper or whopper plopper Any gear ratios 6.3..1 and under I use for cranking which then I sometimes use straight fluro 12-14 lb for 1/4- 3/8 oz square bills anything heavier use 15-17 lb fluro However this is all opinionated, every fisherman will tell you something different, however hopefully this helps. Good luck great reel for the price! |
Question: | What is the gear ratio |
Answer: | I have no idea. Nevertheless it is a great reel. |
Question: | Is it saltwater rated |
Answer: | Shimano low profile reels ending with 01 are left hand retrieve. |

The S A-RB bearings have been through the same process as our A-RB bearings; but feature shields on both sides of the bearings that reduce the possibility of salt or sand inhibiting the bearing's position. The dyna-balance feature eliminates wobble during the retrieve by counter balancing the rotor to enhance sensitivity and smoothness. By using computer balancing; an approach similar to car tire balancing; we are able to redistribute the rotor weight to create smooth rotation and eliminate vibrations. Building upon the successes of Fluidrive; Fluidrive II features a large master gear polished using a wrapping process; increasing the efficiency of the retrieve. The most obvious component of the propulsion line management system is the new propulsion spool lip design. Through tens of thousands of casting tests and computer simulations it has been determined that this new spool lip design provides longer casting distances than a standard spool lip design while preventing backlashes and wind knots from forming. Super stopper II anti-reverse uses a one-way roller bearing that eliminates back-play. This provides the angler with instant hook setting power. Normal oscillation systems use a constant rotation of the oscillation gear that; when translated to the cam; provides an inconsistent spool speed. This results in the line lay that stacks at either end of the spool. By using an oval oscillation gear; we are able to alter the speed of the oscillation cam to provide a consistent spool speed. This results in an even line lay that provides excellent castability and manageability. From an angling perspective; every individual who has owned and enjoyed using Shimano tackle has a reason to thank a Japanese visionary named Shozaburo Shimano; who in 1921 declared “I aim to make Shimano's products the best in Kansai; then the best in Japan; and finally the best in the world. User questions & answers
Question: | What size for the Baitrunner 8000d |
Answer: | No. Shimano Cardiff models have no bait clicker. |
Question: | Is this supposed to be so huge on my spinning reel |
Answer: | I am the original asker of this question. My local tackle shop guy agreed with the 400a for medium swim baits. I got it from Amazon because he only carries more expensive reels. It will work great, but doesn't look like a bass fishing reel other than that. Too big. I could cast regular lures with it though. I just went out side with some weights. 3/4 ounce goes 200', 3/8 ounce 100 feet, 1/4 ounce 60'. This is on a 7' medium heavy ugly stick with 20 pound test mono. It would work good for heavy carolina rig or A-Rigs. (Bigger rod on the way). Very nice reel. |
Question: | What size fits Penn spin fisher |
Answer: | No. Don’t buy this reel... bought one fell apart while I was fishing salmon, took it back got another one ... that one fell apart! Maybe it was just me but I kinda doubt it |
Question: | What size for a stradic ci4+ 2500 hg fb |
Answer: | The 300 will say 300a on the side. That is a 201a model |
- MicroModule Gear
- X-Ship
- SVS Infinity
- Super Free Spool
- S3D Spool
User questions & answers
Question: | Difference of sizes |
Answer: | ratio difference |
Question: | you're showing a left handed model, is that correct |
Answer: | Yes that photo is of a left handed reel. If you need a right hand model, Amazon Customer Service should verify. Sometimes the wrong photo can be unintentionally be attached. This happened to me once and Amazon was prompt to accept the return and issue credit. Best to find out beforehand. |
Question: | Can you salt water fish with it |
Answer: | Yes, it is made for near shore inland salt water fishing. Ideal for speckled trout or redfish. |
Question: | Is this a left hand one ? I retrieve with my left hand |
Answer: | When you select the size, the models that end in 1 are left handed. For example 150 is right handed and 151 is left handed. |

Question: | Would double 9's be fine on the hg model or would it wear the gears out quick |
Answer: | No, it comes in different sizes; which size you buy should correspond to the size of your reel. For instance, the small cover fits small reels best, such as 500 or 1000 sized reels. It sounds like you are trying to cover a smaller reel with a size large cover and it is simply way too big. Check the recommendations on which size cover to get for the size reel you’re buying it for. |
Question: | Is the 400A1 comes with a power handle |
Answer: | I bought a large for a 8500 and fits perfectly. I would say a medium for a 6500 will fit good as well. Hope it will help you decide. |
Question: | What rod should pair it up with for 10 to 35 lb tuna |
Answer: | I have a medium on my ci4+4000 it fits good so a medium or small I bought all three sizes so I have them if I need one for another reel I love mine good luck buddy |
