12 best fly tying threads

Fly tying threads are essential components used by fly anglers to create artificial flies for fly fishing. These threads serve as the foundation for constructing the various elements of a fly, such as the body, wings, and head. They play a crucial role in ensuring that the final fly is durable, functional, and visually appealing.

Here are some key points about fly tying threads:

  1. Materials: Fly tying threads are typically made from various materials, including nylon, polyester, and silk. Each material offers different properties that can affect the final appearance and performance of the fly.

  2. Thread Size: Threads come in different sizes, denoted by a numerical system, such as 6/0, 8/0, or 12/0. The smaller the number, the thicker the thread. Different sizes are used for different purposes, with finer threads for delicate work and thicker threads for building bulkier bodies.

  3. Colors: Threads are available in a wide range of colors to match the natural insects or baitfish that the fly is meant to imitate. Fly tiers often use a combination of threads in various colors to achieve the desired look.

  4. Strength: The strength of the thread is essential for securing materials to the hook and ensuring that the fly remains intact during casting and retrieval. Threads are designed to be strong and durable.

  5. Thread Techniques: Fly tiers use various techniques to wrap, bind, and secure materials to the hook using thread. These techniques include thread wraps, whip finishes, and half-hitches, among others.

  6. Thread Wax: Some fly tiers use thread wax to add grip and reduce slipping when tying materials onto the hook. This can be particularly useful when working with fine threads or slippery materials.

  7. Thread Bobbins: Fly tiers use bobbins to hold and control the thread while tying. Bobbins come in different styles, including standard bobbins and ceramic-tipped bobbins, which can help prevent thread fraying.

  8. Thread Brands: There are numerous brands of fly tying threads available, each with its own characteristics and loyal following among fly tiers. Some well-known brands include Danville, Uni-Thread, and Veevus.

  9. Multi-Strand Threads: Some threads are composed of multiple strands that can be separated and used individually. This allows fly tiers to adjust the thread thickness according to their needs.

  10. Thread Selection: Fly tiers carefully select threads based on the type of fly they are tying, the fishing conditions, and the desired aesthetics. Experienced fly tiers often have a variety of threads in their fly tying kits to accommodate different patterns.

In summary, fly tying threads are essential tools for creating artificial flies in fly fishing. They come in various materials, sizes, and colors to accommodate different fly patterns and styles. Fly tiers use specific techniques and tools to work with these threads, ultimately producing effective and attractive flies for their fishing adventures.

UTC Ultra Thread 140 Denier Black

UTC

Based on 34 reviews Check latest price

Product description

UTC's Ultra Thread has been engineered as a fly tying thread from the beginning. It is not an “off the shelf” thread as are many others. All of Ultra Thread’s characteristics were carefully chosen to enhance its tying performance. Here are a few of the thread characteristics that make Ultra Thread ideal for fly tying:

UTC chose nylon over polyester because nylon will stretch and grip materials better. This allows for more uniform tension and gives the tyer the “feel” for maximum tension. Nylon is the same strength as polyester (given the same denier) and offers the added benefit of more intense colors and a larger range of colors. Because nylon stretches, it grips material tighter and makes the fly more durable.

Their thread is flat with only the minimum number of twists needed for production. This is important because the number of twists in the thread determines how flat it can be wrapped on the hook. The flatter the thread is wrapped, the more slowly it builds up. This is a huge advantage when tying small flies or when tying close to the eye of the hook. A flat thread also grips and covers materials with fewer thread wraps.

Ultra Thread has been lightly waxed. This also limits thread build up and gives the thread a smoother, slicker feel. The added benefit is that head cement fully penetrates the thread which equals more durable flies.

Ultra Thread is a multifilament thread that is not bonded. Bonded threads are oval in shape and are stiff or coarse feeling. Bonded threads also build up fast which is a significant concern when tying small flies. Since Ultra Thread is not bonded, it is the best choice for split thread tying techniques.

Their spools are sized and designed to turn smoot

  • Engineered specifically for fly tying
  • Available in 4 sizes and 33 brilliant colors to meet every fly tying need
