13 best fly lines
Fly lines are a critical component of fly fishing equipment, and they play a crucial role in the success of fly anglers. These lines are specially designed for fly fishing and are distinct from other types of fishing lines. Here's what you need to know about fly lines:
Purpose: Fly lines are used in fly fishing to cast artificial flies to specific locations in the water where fish are likely to be. Unlike other types of fishing lines, the weight of the fly line is what carries the fly to its target, as opposed to the lure or bait's weight.
Design: Fly lines are typically thicker and heavier than other fishing lines. They are constructed in a unique way, with different sections or "tapers" that affect how they cast and behave on the water's surface.
Weight Forward vs. Double Taper: Fly lines come in various tapers, with the two most common being weight forward (WF) and double taper (DT). Weight forward lines have most of their weight concentrated at the front end, which helps with casting longer distances and handling larger flies. Double taper lines have a more balanced weight distribution, making them versatile for delicate presentations and roll casting.
Floating vs. Sinking: Fly lines can be designed to float on the water's surface, sink below the surface, or have a sinking tip for specific fishing conditions. Floating lines are ideal for dry fly fishing, where the fly sits on top of the water. Sinking lines are used for fishing subsurface, such as nymph or streamer fishing.
Line Weight: Fly lines are classified by their weight, typically ranging from 1 to 12, with higher numbers indicating heavier lines. The line weight should match the fly rod weight for optimal casting and fishing performance.
Backing: Fly lines are often connected to backing, which is a thin, strong line that provides extra length to the system. Backing is important because it allows fish to run without running out of line. It's typically made of materials like Dacron or braided nylon.
Leader and Tippet: Fly lines are connected to leaders, which are tapered monofilament or fluorocarbon lines that connect the thicker fly line to the fly itself. The leader is further extended with tippet material, which is a fine, clear line that is nearly invisible to fish. The leader and tippet provide a gradual transition from the fly line to the fly.
Fishing Techniques: Fly lines are used for various fly fishing techniques, including dry fly fishing, nymphing, streamer fishing, and saltwater fly fishing. The choice of fly line depends on the specific fishing method and target species.
Sports and Outdoors: Fly lines are a fundamental component of the sports and outdoors equipment used in fly fishing. They are selected based on the angler's preferences, fishing conditions, and the type of fish they intend to catch.
In fly fishing, selecting the right fly line is crucial for achieving accurate and effective casts, as well as presenting the fly naturally to the fish. Different fly lines are designed to suit various fishing scenarios, and anglers often carry multiple lines to adapt to changing conditions on the water.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the head/body heavy enough to load the rod fast with big flies or is this more of a delicate presentation line |
Answer: | Good question. To be honest I couldnt tell you but the way I see it is braided backing is used to build a larger arbor on your fly reel and used as an emergency line if you catch a larger fish than your target species. Braided mainline is a lot thinner and is designed to flow through the rod guides with ease where as braided backing is thicker and not designed to be cast. ie a spinning reel. Hope this helps. Piscifun,Kastking and Reaction Tackle all offer braided lines at an exceptional price! |
Question: | Is there loops on both sides? I saw reviews about it having 2 loops and reviews about them having none, I ordered the spring green in wt |
Answer: | Yes, 300yd will be good for it. |
Question: | is there a 6 wt sinking option |
Answer: | its braided just like backing line for a fly reel. I bought it to go around black sipping straws that make slipknots to adjust floating bobbers. They sell these knots in the fishing stores but cost quite a bit and I watched a video youtube showing how to tie these knots onto the straws so you can slip them up your line and adjust the depth of your hook below your bobber. Braided mono no, but you could make leaders out of them they are like braided dacron. Backing of the fly reel is first to go on and then connecting the main floating/sinking/weight forward fly line above the braided dacron. If you only used fly line and had a big fish on you would run out of line fast or have to pay allot of money for a fly line 2/3 times as long to catch the fish - the backing line allows you to fight the fish past the special fly line needed to catch the fish. |
Question: | Do you need backing like with this line |
Answer: | These are weight forward floating fly lines. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Novice question. Why twenty pound test |
Answer: | no |
Question: | When you attach backing on a fly reel do you start in the middle or side |
Answer: | Backing is for when a fish "runs" with your fly. There is not much that is more frustrating than to have finally hooked that huge fish that has been taunting you all day, but then when he runs away you run out of line and the leader snaps when it reaches the limit of your fly line. Backing will add extra length, plus it is easier to tie onto a reel than fly line. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many feet does the 8wt spool have |
Answer: | You can use any backing you want but if you do not know what you are going to use the reel to fish for then you would be smart to use a good backing in case you are going to want o go for more than a hatchery raised trout. The 20 pound test only takes up slightly more than the 10 pound . Use what you want you probely will not ever use it. |
Question: | Will this fly line in wf7 work well for redfish on my 7 weight rod |
Answer: | I'm just a beginner, but I start in the middle, don't know if it's right, but that is where I start. With tension on the spool of backing I use my forefinger to move backing back and forth so it doesn't bunch up on one side or the other. A lot of shops will spool your reel for free if you buy the backing and fly line thru them. |
Question: | Is this a good line for streamers |
Answer: | That depends on the line weight (based on the weight in grams of the front 30 feet of line - that's how fly line numbers are determined). The heavier the line (front 30 feet) the bigger the number for the ine ... and the bigger that number the heavier weight of fly rod it takes to properly cast it ... AND, the heavier the fly line the bigger or heavier the flies it can cast. All of this is basic fly fishing 101 stuff. So a WF9F in this line should work well with a 9 weight fly rod casting big streamers or poppers. |
Question: | looking for 5/6 wt. salt water fly line but cant find it for this price ,what do you think about putting this 7wt. line on my 5/6 wt.reel rod |
Answer: | I've bought 5 wt and 4 wt and both had loops on both sides. I cut em off and tie my own knots |
- High Quality Materials:Made of high quality polyester (dacron) means it is slim, rot proof and UV resistant. So you can put plenty on your reel without overfilling it. This backing line is the perfect complement to all fly lines.
- Strong and Sturdy: 8 strand hollow braided backing line is extremely abrasion-resistant. Not easy to fray after cutting and attaching to other lines.
- Soft and Low coefficient of friction:Has good curl degree and easy to knot, won't damage your favorite fly rod guides when using.
- Available in 20lb and 30lb.20 lb is good for trout, bass, and most freshwater fishing.30lb is good for salmon / saltwater / pike fishing or where the extra bulk is needed to help fill a large reel.
- SF are very concerned about customer satisfaction and desire to provide excellent customer service. If you're not satisfied with our products please don't hesitate to contact with us,let's make it right.Give a try without hassles!
User questions & answers
Question: | Are the yellow and orange lines colorfast? The last orange backing I bought bled and stained my flyline |
Answer: | Fly line is 100ft. A spool can hold up to 200 yards of backing |
Question: | Is it floating line |
Answer: | Fly lines are made to match the action of the rod. A seven weight rod will work well with a seven weight line . Your Rio Mainstream WF7 is a fine line for any fish. The critical issue is the leader material and the knots you tie. Those will give way long before any problems with the line. What really counts on the Red Fish you catch is whether you have enough rod to handle a large fish, of any kind. |
Question: | what are the diameters (in mm) for each one |
Answer: | No, this line is better for all around saltwater use. |
Question: | I have 5wt line. Which backing should i get? (20lb or 30lb |
Answer: | It depends on the weight and action of your rod. It's fairly common to up the weight of line by one level, but jumping 2 levels could unbalance your rod enough to make casting more difficult. But secondly, putting a 7# line on a 5/6# reel, you may have to decrease the amount of backing. In salt water fishing, you never know what will bite your fly, and if it's a biggie, you may wish you had more backing. When fishing with poppers on a 8# rod/reel, I hooked into a pompano that took me into my backing twice. I don't think your 5# would cut that. I would keep shopping. |
