It lays flat immediately as it's just a basic cotton bath mat but its heavier and thicker than the average 100% cotton bathmat rug that does not have a non slip backing. It is a typical thick 100%cotton bath rug like a Ralph Lauren bath rug or something like that. Better price than most this size. I have the 5 foot version. Have had it several months and washed it several times and its still very comfy to step onto instead of the cold tile bathroom floor. It works very well for a bath mat in my opinion. I try to only put it in the dryer for a short time and then hang it to dry the rest of the way. I usually don't like any bath rugs that are not 100% cotton and I did not want any rubber/latex etc back because the non slip backing always ends up drying out and going to pieces and making a mess in the washer and dryer and everywhere else. It will move around on the floor a bit since it does not have the non-stick backing but you can solve that if you put a piece of those mesh non-stick non slip rug mats under it. (I don't bother)The rug does give off a ton of lint in the washer the first time or two its washed. I would buy it again because I wanted something that went the entire length of the tub. Also I wanted a good thick heavy 100% cotton rug and this seems a good deal. If money were not an issue I might buy something more high-end but this was the best I could get for this price point. Some of the loops that are long will maybe become loose like any cotton bath rug that is shag-like will but hey, it's not some expensive wool oriental rug right? it's a bath mat. I just trim loose things like that and everything is fine
