2 best gps for hiking and hunting
GPS for hiking and hunting is an essential tool for outdoor enthusiasts looking to navigate through remote terrain, track their movements, and ensure their safety. These devices are designed to provide accurate location information, maps, and various features tailored to the specific needs of hikers and hunters. Here's what you need to know:
GPS Accuracy: GPS (Global Positioning System) devices use satellite signals to determine your exact location.Modern GPS units are highly accurate, often within a few meters, and they can provide precise coordinates to help you navigate.
Mapping and Topography: Many GPS devices for hiking and hunting come with preloaded topographic maps that display elevation changes, trails, and geographical features. This can be invaluable for planning your route and avoiding obstacles.
Waypoints and Routes: You can set waypoints and create routes on your GPS device. Waypoints mark specific locations, while routes allow you to plan a series of waypoints to follow. This helps you stay on track and find your way back to camp or your vehicle.
Track Recording: GPS units can record your track as you move, creating a digital breadcrumb trail of your journey. This can be useful for retracing your steps or sharing your adventure with others.
Geocaching: Some GPS devices support geocaching, a popular outdoor activity where participants use GPS coordinates to find hidden containers or "geocaches" in the wilderness.
Battery Life: Consider the battery life of the GPS device, especially if you plan extended trips. Some models offer replaceable batteries, while others have rechargeable ones.
Ruggedness and Durability: Since hiking and hunting often involve rough conditions, it's important to choose a GPS device that is rugged and durable, capable of withstanding water, dust, and impacts.
SOS and Safety Features: Many GPS devices come with SOS buttons or features that allow you to send distress signals in emergencies. Some even have built-in two-way communication for additional safety.
Compatibility with Apps: Some GPS units can connect to smartphones via Bluetooth, allowing you to use specialized mapping and tracking apps.
Hunting-Specific Features: For hunters, certain GPS devices offer additional features such as game tracking, hunting unit boundaries, and hunting season data.
Offline Maps: Ensure that the GPS device or accompanying app allows you to download maps for offline use. This is crucial when you're in areas without cell reception.
Weight and Size: Depending on your preferences and the type of outdoor activities you engage in, you may want to consider the weight and size of the GPS device. Lightweight and compact options are ideal for minimalist hikers.
Cost: GPS devices for hiking and hunting can vary widely in price, so it's important to determine your budget and the features you need before making a purchase.
Remember that while GPS devices are invaluable tools, they should not replace basic navigation skills. Always carry a map and compass as a backup, and make sure you're familiar with how to use them. Additionally, be prepared with proper outdoor gear, clothing, and safety equipment when venturing into the wilderness.

Answer: | I don't know about the eTrex 10, but for the eTrex 20 & 30 you can purchase extremely detailed world wide maps from Amazon & Ebay for a fraction of the cost you will pay if purchased directly from Garmin. I have an eTrex 30 and it is the best GPS I've ever owned. I have the mini United States, Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean maps card installed. It shows even the private driveways out in the country side. The vehicle mounts that work on the 20 & 30 won't work on the 10. The type that slides on the back of the unit. |
