9 best propeller for pontoon boat

A propeller for a pontoon boat is a critical component that plays a pivotal role in the boat's propulsion and overall performance. Pontoon boats are popular for recreational boating and can vary in size and design. Here's what you should know about propellers for pontoon boats:

  1. Types of Propellers: Pontoon boats typically use two main types of propellers - aluminum and stainless steel. Each has its advantages and considerations:

    • Aluminum Propellers: These are lightweight and cost-effective. They are suitable for most pontoon boats and offer good performance for casual cruising and water sports.

    • Stainless Steel Propellers: Stainless steel props are durable and provide excellent performance, making them ideal for pontoon boats used for water sports or larger vessels. They are less prone to damage but are more expensive than aluminum props.

  2. Pitch and Diameter: The pitch and diameter of the propeller are crucial factors in determining a boat's performance. A higher pitch propeller offers more speed but less acceleration, while a lower pitch provides better low-end torque for activities like water skiing and tubing.

  3. Number of Blades: Pontoon boat propellers can have three, four, or even five blades. A three-blade propeller offers better top-end speed, while a four or five-blade propeller provides improved acceleration and handling. The choice depends on your specific boating needs.

  4. Cavitation and Ventilation: Cavitation and ventilation are two common issues with propellers. Cavitation occurs when the propeller blades create bubbles and lose traction in the water. Ventilation happens when air is drawn into the propeller blades, reducing their efficiency. Proper propeller selection and maintenance can help mitigate these issues.

  5. Trimming and Tilt: Adjusting the boat's trim and tilt can significantly impact the propeller's performance. Proper trim adjustment ensures the boat runs efficiently and minimizes drag.

  6. Matching to Engine: Ensure that your chosen propeller is compatible with your boat's engine specifications, including its horsepower and torque ratings. An ill-matched propeller can lead to poor performance and potential damage to the engine.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep your propeller in good condition. Inspect it for damage, dings, and corrosion. Replace or repair damaged propellers promptly to maintain safe and efficient boating.

  8. Local Regulations: Be aware of local regulations and restrictions regarding propeller size and design, especially in areas with sensitive marine environments or specific boating restrictions.

In conclusion, selecting the right propeller for your pontoon boat is crucial for achieving the desired performance and safety on the water. Consider factors like material, pitch, diameter, and the number of blades while also matching it to your boat's engine specifications. Regular maintenance and adhering to local regulations will ensure a safe and enjoyable boating experience.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this fit a 2017 60hp command thrust
Answer: Yes. The 40/50/60 hp all have the same command thrust lower end
Question: I have a 2009 mercury bigfoot 60 hp 4 stroke efi on a 21 ft. pontoon fishin' barge. prop is a 14/11p black max, should i go 4 blade 10p or 11p
Answer: I had the same prop (14/11) on my 60 bigfoot,,, I went to the 4 blade 10 pitch to increase the RPMs under a big load. It got my rpms up to 5800 to 5900, but lost about 2MPH but happy with the outcome. As the Toon is usually loaded to the max with people and that helped.
Question: Does anyone know if they sell this prop without the hub kit? I have two already and just need the prop
Answer: LoL I have the same issue but I am a parts saver. I would check with a prop shop. You may have to buy a used prop rather than with the kit when you buy brand new.
Question: Will this fit my Bayliner with a 4.3merc
Answer: The prop was for an outboard I use for my new 40hp. You need to cross reference as there may be a different shaft diameter. Look it up on the Merc website or give them a call

How to identify your current propeller

Looking to replace the prop that you have installed on your boat? Here are the most common places to find information about your propeller (such as part number, model, pitch, and diameter):

  1. The center of the propeller (commonly known as the hub)
  2. The side of the propeller

Selecting the Right Propeller

Choosing the correct propeller can be a confusing process. We're here to help you identify some important terms when in the market for a boat propeller - with terms such as diameter, pitch, and material.

Here are some useful things to know about your propeller that can help you determine exactly what you need. Hover over the images below to learn about each one:

Prop 101: Diameter

The diameter is an integral part to the propeller design and must be appropriately matched with the pitch to provide maximum thrust and mid-range fuel economy.

To measure the diameter of a propeller, take the distance across the hypothetical circle that the propeller would make when rotating. Another way to measure diameter would be by taking the distance between the center of the propeller (called the hub) to the tip of the blade - and doubling it.

Prop 101: Pitch

The pitch is the distance a propeller would move in one revolution. For example, a 20-inch pitch propeller would move forward 20 inches in one revolution. The pitch is a trade-off between top speed and acceleration: a higher pitch would deliver higher top speeds, but with lower acceleration.

Your pitch is based on factors such as your engine, your boat's weight and hull style, and your current propeller: number of blades, diameter and pitch. For best results, consult with your dealer.

Prop 101: Material

Many boats are factory-equipped with aluminum propellers. Aluminum propellers are relatively inexpensive and suitable for general purpose use. Stainless steel propellers are more expensive but are far stronger and more durable than aluminum, while delivering increased performance.

Refer to the chart below to learn more about some of our most popular aluminum and stainless steel brands.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a difference between 12.5x19 propeller 48-8m8026600 pontoon 12-1/2 and12.5x19 propeller 48-8m8026600 "no pontoon
Answer: No
Question: Can anyone provide what additional purchase (specific) is required to make this Merc product fit on my Yamaha--or any other make
Answer: I think it will take you a flo-torque hub kit for your engine brand. The propeller is the same, it is the center (flo-torque hub) that changes.
Question: would it match 12.7 x
Answer: It should work. I really don’t know how much of a performance difference there will be between 12.5 and 12.7. It will be slightly smaller in diameter but you should still have the same top end you have now. Great prop. I love mine.
Question: Will this propeller work on a Suzuki 115 hp 4 stroke 4 cycle marine engine
Answer: Go to the Mercury website and go thru the 'propeller selection' options .. Most merc props will fit and work with other engines .. good luck

The Prop that put the “four” in Performance! Turning Point’s Four Blade Hustler revolutionized the aluminum propeller market when introduced over 6 years ago. No one had ever produced a state-of-the-art Swept Cleaver design for 40-150 HP applications. These props re-wrote the rules, proving that you can run a four blade that has unprecedented hole shot, handling, and rough water stability without the top-end speed loss you experience with other manufacturers’ propellers. These Turning Point props also produced up to 46% more reverse thrust than other comparable designs in recent tests. The Hustler 4 blade series is perfect for any application that demands enhanced acceleration, cornering, and load carrying capabilities. This prop series is ideally suited for watersports, sterndrive boats, tri-toons, bay boats, and any vessel that can use stern lift. It is our best upgrade of older aluminum designs from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and ’00’s, and will outrun most newer props, including five blade ski props.

Question: Is this a high thrust propeller
Answer: this is a manufacture recommended prop. the pitch determines if it is considered a power prop or a speed prop. the greater the pitch the faster the boat will run. too much pitch and the motor will not have enough power to raise the boat on plane. too little pitch and the motor will run at too high of a rpm. stay safe and go back to factory recommended prop
