12 best marine power cords
Marine power cords, also known as shore power cords or boat power cords, are essential electrical components used in boating to connect a boat's electrical system to a shore-based power source. These cords enable boats to access electricity while docked or moored at marinas, providing power for various onboard systems and appliances. Here's what you should know about marine power cords:
Purpose: Marine power cords serve the primary purpose of supplying electrical power from the shore to the boat. This power can be used to charge batteries, run appliances, operate lights, and power other onboard equipment.
Construction: Marine power cords are constructed with specific materials and designs to withstand the harsh marine environment. They are typically insulated with heavy-duty, UV-resistant, and weatherproof materials to protect against water, sunlight, and abrasion.
Connectors: Marine power cords feature connectors on both ends. One end connects to the boat's electrical system, usually at a power inlet on the vessel, while the other end is designed to plug into a shore power pedestal or outlet at the marina.
Ampacity and Voltage: Marine power cords come in various sizes and configurations, with different ampacity (current-carrying capacity) and voltage ratings to match the boat's electrical requirements. Common voltages include 120V and 240V, while ampacity can range from 15A to 50A or more.
Length: Marine power cords are available in different lengths to accommodate various docking scenarios. It's essential to choose a cord length that allows the boat to reach the shore power source comfortably without unnecessary tension or slack.
Adapters: Some boats may require adapters to connect their specific inlet configuration to the standard connectors found on most marine power cords. Adapters ensure compatibility between the boat's electrical system and the shore power source.
Safety Features: Marine power cords may include safety features such as locking connectors to prevent accidental disconnection and color-coded wires for easy identification of hot, neutral, and ground connections.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance of marine power cords is essential to ensure their longevity and safety. This includes regularly inspecting for damage, cleaning connectors, and storing them properly when not in use.
Regulations: Boating safety regulations often require the use of marine-grade power cords to ensure safety and compliance with electrical standards. Using non-marine-grade cords can be dangerous and may lead to accidents.
Storage: When not in use, marine power cords should be coiled and stored in a dry, protected area to prevent damage from exposure to sunlight, saltwater, and extreme weather conditions.
Safety Considerations: It's crucial to turn off the boat's electrical systems before connecting or disconnecting marine power cords to prevent electrical shock or damage.
Marine power cords are vital for boaters who want to access electricity while docked or moored. Choosing the right marine power cord, maintaining it properly, and following safety guidelines are essential for a safe and reliable electrical connection when enjoying time on the water.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this cord UL approved |
Answer: | Believe it said UL and C-UL approved. It works perfectly as a shore power cord for my sailboat. |
Question: | What guage is the wire in the cord |
Answer: | It’s a rated 30 amp cable... 30 Watts x 120 volts= 3,600 watts. That’s the max on the cable but that’s popping your breaker. Figure on 2200 watts normal max working load. |
Question: | I need a L5-20R male end to plug into the marina, female outlet. Do you carry these cords in 25 foot lengths |
Answer: | UL, TUV, EC... Just don’t stand in a puddle when plugging it in. No rating will protect you from that. |
Question: | Can i use this power cord for my camper |
Answer: | I purchased this last year, and it works fine with my Marinco 30 Amp receptacle |

Question: | I see that the 30/50 amp side is water resistant with the lock collar but what about the connection to the 15/20 amp? I want to use this in the rain |
Answer: | no sorry |
Question: | Will this work to run rv ac off standard |

User questions & answers
Question: | My boat is 50 amp 125/250 will this plug work on my system to plug into one single 30 amp marine outlet on a dock and give limited power to my panel |
Answer: | I have same adaptor, male goes into boat Hubble and female to 110 AC power source. Once this is done, you can then set boat master breaker for AC circuits to ON, then plug shop vac into boat's 110V AC outlet. Assuming you have all of the above, otherwise, no joy. |
Question: | This connector is not locking onto the boat. Slightest bump can knock it loose. Old style twist and lock works fine. Anyone else having this issue |
Answer: | It is a standard 15 amp 3 prong plug with no water resistance features...No different from a household extension cord. I have mine in a protected GFI outlet in a weather proof housing on my dock, and I recommend you do the same. |
Question: | Can I plug a window AC into this |
Answer: | I use it on my boat which has only a 110- 120 volt 30 amp Alternating current( AC )inlet receptacle. This adapter allows me to use a 110-120 volt, 20 amp AC ( ie, household current) input if that is the only electrical supply available. If your RV has a 110-120 volt 30 amp AC receptacle with a male prong arrangement exactly like the large female plug pictured and if your air conditioning unit does not need higher wattage than household current can supply ( Watts = volts x amps), then this adapter might work for you. I am not sure if Marine and RV plug prong shapes and arrangements are identical- that might be too rational to expect. Best to compare this photo-to what you see in an RV catalog. |
