12 best battery switches for boats
Battery switches for boats are essential electrical components used in marine applications to control the electrical power distribution between multiple batteries and various onboard systems. These switches are critical for managing power resources, ensuring safety, and preventing electrical issues on boats. Here are some key aspects to know about battery switches for boats:
Battery Isolation: Boat battery switches allow boat owners to isolate one or more batteries from the electrical system. This is crucial for preventing battery drain when the boat is not in use or for isolating a malfunctioning battery to maintain power to other systems.
Battery Selection: They enable users to choose which battery or battery bank powers the boat's electrical systems. This is useful for managing different battery banks with different purposes, such as starting batteries and deep-cycle batteries for house systems.
Emergency Shut-off: Battery switches often include an emergency shut-off feature that can quickly disconnect all power from the boat's electrical system in case of an emergency, such as a fire or electrical malfunction.
Battery Charging: Some battery switches are equipped with positions for combining multiple batteries to charge them simultaneously from a single source, such as an alternator or a battery charger.
Dual Circuitry: Dual-circuit battery switches are designed to isolate the engine starting battery from the house battery bank. This ensures that there is always enough power to start the engine, even if the house batteries are depleted.
Keyed or Rotary Switches: Battery switches come in various types, including rotary switches and keyed switches. Rotary switches offer multiple positions for selecting different battery configurations, while keyed switches are simpler and provide only on/off functionality.
Voltage Ratings: It's important to select a battery switch that is rated for the voltage of your boat's electrical system. Common ratings include 12V and 24V, depending on the boat's configuration.
Installation: Proper installation is critical for the safe and effective operation of battery switches. They should be installed in a dry and easily accessible location, typically near the boat's electrical panel.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the reliability of battery switches. This includes cleaning terminals, checking for corrosion, and inspecting the switch for signs of wear or damage.
Compliance: Boat owners should ensure that their battery switches meet safety and regulatory standards, such as those set by organizations like the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) to ensure safe and reliable electrical systems on boats.
Battery switches for boats are crucial components for maintaining electrical systems, managing power sources, and ensuring safety while out on the water. Proper selection, installation, and maintenance of these switches are vital for the smooth operation of a boat's electrical system.

Perko's 8501 Series battery selector switches are among the most popular battery switches ever produced. Their use of the traditional Perko bolt circle makes for easy installation, whether new or as a replacement. These switches can be mounted in numerous locations. And as ignition protected switches, they can be installed in the engine rooms of gasoline powered boats. In addition to doing everything a battery disconnect switch does, battery selector switches permit battery selection (of two or more batteries) for specific purposes including starting engines, running accessories or even recharging. They allow for the use of one or more batteries in systems with one or more engines and facilitate putting batteries in parallel for emergency starting when one or both batteries are substantially discharged. Perko battery switches are designed for surface mounting. Standard duty switches have a bright red polycarbonate housing for safety with a large easy-to-turn black knob. The housing of the heavy duty switches are red fiber-reinforced polycarbonate. Selector switches are designed with a make before break feature. This allows switching between the 1, the ALL and the 2 positions while the engine is running. Models with an Alternator Field Disconnect feature offer protection for Non-Unitized Alternators should the switch accidentally be turned to the OFF position with the engine running. Versions of the 8501 Series switches offer additional features such as alternator disconnect and key lock security. The 90° rotation feature allows users to feel the switches' position in no light situations and the classic shape of the knob makes it easy to turn. High conductivity studs are long enough to handle more than 1 cable and strong enough for torque needed for secure connections. Optional spacer ring (PN 0462DP0RED) allows for the use of larger cables.

Question: | I have a 2000 watt inverter in my car. the required cables are 0 guage, rated at 350 AMPS. Is this the right switch for those cables |
Answer: | No you can run on any position |
Question: | what is the load capacity of this switch |
Answer: | No, this would connect the batteries in parallel. When two identical batteries are connected in parallel, you double the output capacity while keeping the output voltage the same as either battery. |
Question: | How to wire it |
Answer: | The knob is not removable from what I can tell. For flush mounting it is best to cut a hole large enough for the face panel to show and the rest is hidden behind the panel. |
Question: | I have a solar system, with 3 batteries in parallel. How do I wire it to turn the system off ? Thanks Jerry |
Answer: | Studs and cable lugs will be 3/8” |

User questions & answers
Question: | All I need is the ON/OFF version. I noticed in the picture it has 3 post on the back, How would that be wired ? I only have 1 Hot in and out |
Answer: | Should be ok. I use one with 0 gauge cable to my 2500 watt inverter. Just watch your cable length, shorter the better. I'm also using a 24vdc battery system, if you are using a 12vdc battery system you might be under-sizing the switch and cable. Don't forget to fuse it. |
Question: | Is it waterproof |
Answer: | the M-series wil carry a 300 amp load, and will not spark when switched between positions. If that's not enough, the e-Series will hold a 350 amp continuous load. |
Question: | What does ignition protected mean |
Answer: | Side 1 to battery "A" + and side 2 to battery "B" +, common to vehicle or camper or what ever your installing it in. Negative of both batteries go to the vehicle ground as normal. You can then use the switch and select either battery or both in parallel or disconnect both of them from the vehicle. Works wonderful on my camper. |
Question: | Power flows in both directions through this switch?? Discharge/ charge batteries |
Answer: | The way I would do this would be to run the largest wire I can to the switch over to where you keep your 3 batteries. and then have this large wire end in a busbar or distribution block. Ideally 1-in, 3-out. Or if you plan on adding any more batteries, use a distribution block that has the same number of outputs as total batteries you plan to use. Then run the biggest wires that fit the distribution block to the batteries. The shorter the length of wire, the better. But the best method is to use the largest wires for the longest runs and split with distribution blocks at the batteries |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the switch water/weather-proof |
Answer: | Yes. Assuming it's wired correctly and the charger is connected directly to the start battery. Then the ARC will bypass the switch and charge the house battery as well. |
Question: | Can I use it for my ebike for parallel connection |
Answer: | No the system doesn't have to have identical batteries. They need the same voltage 12/24. |
Question: | Tools needed for installation |
Answer: | The Blue Sea is designed like a battery tender, it charges the main (engine starter) first. When the main is charged it will start charging the auxiliary battery. If you run your auxiliary battery a lot (accessories) then you will need to run the engine for quite a while to recharge or use a separate battery charger (110 volts). My suggestion is to install a small solar charger to help keep the auxiliary battery charged while using your boat and it will also charge up and keep charged your battery when not in use. This products does what it's supposed to do. |
Question: | I'm confused. I want to buy battery post clamp set shown but all reviews are for a switch -can someone clarify |

Question: | Im running 24v service truck, with a front mounted quick connect jumper cable setup. Can I use this as a safe power off until needed |
Answer: | 1 Year Warranty--a replacement or refund is guaranteed |
Question: | I ordered and received one, 5/16” posts and 48v rated. tried again, same thing... is 3/8 posts and 60v a misprint? Or are you sending the wrong item |
Answer: | go to auto parts store or like Lowe's or H.D. - buy packet of larger wire ends for the size wire you have cut old end off crimp new end on put piece of heat shrink over end of wire and terminal connection or electrical tape.. since this goes between batteries and your camper you'll probably need a second wire to go between the battery and switch and then the wire you changed the end on would go on other side of the switch. so when you replace the end of your wire mount your switch in such a place that you can use the wire you have cut it so you make the jumper between battery and switch and the end you wanted to replace that way you only have to buy 2 ends |
