8 best bilge pump automatics
Automatic bilge pumps are essential components of a boat's plumbing system designed to remove excess water that accumulates in the bilge area, the lowest part of the boat's hull. These pumps are crucial for maintaining the safety and functionality of a boat. Here's what you need to know about automatic bilge pumps:
Purpose: The primary purpose of an automatic bilge pump is to keep the bilge area dry by automatically pumping out accumulated water. This prevents the boat from taking on too much water and potentially sinking.
Operation: Automatic bilge pumps are equipped with a float switch or electronic sensor that detects the presence of water in the bilge. When the water level reaches a certain point, the float switch triggers the pump to activate, and it begins pumping the water overboard. This automation ensures that the bilge is regularly emptied without the need for manual intervention.
Types: There are two main types of automatic bilge pumps: submersible and centrifugal. Submersible pumps are installed directly in the bilge area, while centrifugal pumps are mounted higher in the boat and connected to the bilge with hoses.
Capacity: Bilge pumps come in various capacities, typically measured in gallons per hour (GPH). The choice of pump capacity depends on the size of the boat and the expected water ingress. Larger boats may require higher-capacity pumps to handle larger volumes of water.
Wiring and Power: Automatic bilge pumps are usually wired to the boat's electrical system and are equipped with a fuse or circuit breaker for safety. Some boats may have backup power sources, such as a dedicated battery, to ensure the pump can operate even if the main battery fails.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the reliability of automatic bilge pumps. This includes cleaning the pump, inspecting the float switch, and testing the pump periodically to make sure it activates when needed.
Safety Considerations: Automatic bilge pumps play a critical role in preventing flooding and maintaining a safe boating experience. It's essential to ensure they are in proper working condition before every voyage.
Regulations: Depending on your location and the type of boat you have, there may be regulations and safety standards governing the installation and use of bilge pumps. It's important to be aware of and comply with these regulations.
Automatic bilge pumps are an integral part of a boat's plumbing system, providing peace of mind to boaters by automatically removing excess water and helping to prevent potentially dangerous situations caused by flooding or sinking. Regular maintenance and monitoring of these pumps are essential for safe boating.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can a secondary float switch be used with this unit |
Answer: | No, its a self contained unit. |
Question: | Can this pump fit sail flo sump box which came with 750 gpm pump |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | I can’t find a hose that fits over the outlet hole or inside it. The hose in boat is same size. What did you use |
Answer: | BEWARE folks telling you what size hose to use. This pump comes in several different models that look identical but have different flow rates and outlet hose sizes. I used the wisdom of amazon comments and promptly bought 3/4" -- the wrong size hose. Garden hose is way too small. My pump wasn't labeled on the body of the pump and came without instructions. My outlet port was 1 and 1/8 inches in diameter, NOT 3/4". Measure yours, don't just check the Q&A then buy something. On another site, I found some specifications, and the pump model A02-111001 uses a hose with a interior diameter of 29mm. That's about 1 and 1/8 inches. |
Question: | Can I use this in saltwater |
Answer: | Sure. It's a bilge pump. Many boats get salt water inside. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have an installed non working S750 model 4507.. Whats that round knob for on the body of the pump |
Answer: | My pump is used in a row boat, so it only has to pump up about two feet, which it does with no difficulty. |
Question: | What is the resistance of the float switch when it closes and turns on the pump? What is the mechanism used to make the closure if it is not mercury |
Answer: | Im sorry off the top of my head I dont remember either 1 in or 3/4in I also purchased the hose kit and they worked together..and am very pleased with the product. |
Question: | My boat has a manual pump now. Will i just be able to hook this one up with the current switch on the console or will I have to get bilge pump switch |
Answer: | this bilge pump just pumps when power is supplied to it, if you want it to work automatic then you also need to use a float switch to control it |
Question: | Do u have 500gph 12v automatic bilge pump and how much |
Answer: | I would not recommend hooking this directly to a solar panel...the pump will be damaged at low output voltages from the panel...instead use the solar panel to charge a small 12V battery that in turn powers the pump. Put a low battery cut-off between the pump and battery to protect the battery. Depending upon how long you want the pump to run a small 6-12 Ah battery would be sufficient for 8-10 hours between charge cycles. |

Question: | does it have any mounting hardware includes |
Answer: | the pump opens up from the bottom. there's mounting holes |
Question: | What gauge are the wires? Is there a connected the ends are attached to |
Answer: | 16 ga, and there is no connector, you have ground, power and the switch, all stranded. |
Question: | What are the dimensions -length, width, height of the pump |
Answer: | Yes the pump is 6" in length, 3 1/2" wide and 4" in height. You have to install a plastic tube that run the water over the transom. I purchased one recommended by Amazon but it did not fit. I recommend installing and getting an off the shelf plastic tube and clamp from your local hardware. |
Question: | Is there a warranty i bought this in august. I doesent work now |
Answer: | sorry dont know you might want to contact the maker |

User questions & answers
Question: | I see that this is meant to be battery powered. Is there any way to power it from the wall 110v |
Answer: | Yes if you buy a converter that will convert 110v ac to 12v dc. I use one in my garage. |

Answer: | You are probably correct |
Question: | Is a check valve recommended? If so, how much does in restrict flow, and does it hurt the pump if flow restricted |

User questions & answers
Question: | what size bilge pump is needed for a 24' boat |
Answer: | The ID of your discharge hose should be 1-1/8". You'll find that this odd size is hard to find and sort of ruins the usefulness of the Pelican pump. Why Pelican would create a product with a useless hose barb, then not also sell the weird size that you can't find anywhere else... |
Question: | can it be used in cold weather to flood a pond |
Answer: | The tag does state that it floats although we haven’t tested it |
Question: | How does it mount? Assume the strainer is screwed down |
Answer: | It works both up and down, very efficient! |
Question: | Is this listing for one or two pumps? The picture shows two but I cant find a quantity in the listing |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Can this product be used on raw wood prior to applying a finish (ie Rubio monocoat oil wax |
Answer: | I use for water only |
Question: | What country is "Touch of Oranges" from |
Answer: | The pump is 24" long and the hose is 36" |
Question: | Can this product be used on unfinished wood |
Answer: | Yes. just measured it and it's 2". You could insert it into shaft to a depth of 21.5" before you would hit the L fitting at the top or where the hose is connected to the body of the bilge. Goody Luck! BTW: It's a good little water pump. |
Question: | Can you use this on Bamboo flooring |
Answer: | I use it to pump out hole when I make irrigation repairs at my church. It will not suck up rocks and mud but it will handle very dirty water. It is important to pump some clean water through it after use in muddy water to flush it out. Good product I recommend. |
Question: | Environmental friendly |
Answer: | 1 inch inside diameter x 1 1/4 diameter clear tubing 24 inches long from the local hardware store that sells bulk tubing by the foot. Cut the end square and soak it in a cup of boiling water for about 5 seconds to soften the tubing and make it easy to slide over the pump output. 18 to 24 inches is the ideal length and depends on the beam of your kayak. Works like a charm... |
Question: | Can you please tell me what size containers are provided in this set? Thank you |
Answer: | There’s a side port up by the handle. The water is expelled with each motion (up and down). May want to get some clear tubing to route the water where you want it to go (approx 2 feet). |
Question: | Dors this protect from water rings and such on a kitchen table |
Answer: | Yes. The pump has a buoyant foam sleeve cover that floats. |
Question: | Can it be used to clean wooden rails on the staircase |
Answer: | I'm not sure what country it doesn't say |
