12 best altimeters

An altimeter is an instrument used to measure altitude, which is the distance above a specific reference point or the Earth's surface. It is commonly used in various activities, including aviation, hiking, mountaineering, and outdoor sports. Here's what you should know about altimeters:

  1. Types of Altimeters:

    • Barometric Altimeters: These altimeters measure altitude by assessing atmospheric pressure. As altitude increases, atmospheric pressure decreases. Barometric altimeters use this principle to determine altitude.
    • GPS Altimeters: Some modern altimeters use GPS (Global Positioning System) technology to calculate altitude by receiving signals from multiple satellites.GPS altimeters are highly accurate and can provide altitude information along with other GPS data.
  2. Applications:

    • Aviation: Altimeters are essential instruments in aircraft, helping pilots maintain safe altitudes during flight. They are used to determine the aircraft's height above sea level or ground level.
    • Outdoor Activities: Altimeters are valuable tools for hikers, climbers, and outdoor enthusiasts. They assist in navigation, route planning, and estimating elevation gain or loss during hikes and climbs.
    • Sports: Altimeters are used in sports like skydiving and paragliding to monitor altitude during jumps and flights.
  3. How Barometric Altimeters Work:

    • Barometric altimeters rely on an aneroid barometer to measure atmospheric pressure. As altitude changes, the pressure at the instrument's location changes accordingly.
    • These altimeters have a reference pressure setting, typically set to the current sea-level pressure. By comparing the current pressure to the reference pressure, the altimeter calculates the altitude above or below sea level.
  4. Calibration: Barometric altimeters need to be periodically calibrated to account for changes in atmospheric pressure. This calibration ensures accuracy, especially in regions with significant pressure variations.

  5. Accuracy: The accuracy of an altimeter depends on various factors, including the quality of the instrument, calibration, and local weather conditions. High-quality altimeters can provide accurate altitude readings.

  6. Units: Altimeters can display altitude in various units, such as feet or meters. The choice of units may depend on the user's preference or the specific activity.

  7. Display: Altimeters typically feature a digital or analog display that shows the current altitude. Some models may also display other data, such as rate of ascent or descent.

  8. Battery Power: Portable altimeters are often powered by batteries. It's important to carry spare batteries when using an altimeter for extended periods, especially in remote areas.

  9. Weather Forecasting: Changes in atmospheric pressure, as detected by a barometric altimeter, can be indicative of approaching weather changes. A sudden drop in pressure may suggest an incoming storm.

In summary, altimeters are instruments used to measure altitude, and they come in various types, including barometric and GPS altimeters. They are valuable tools in aviation, outdoor activities, and sports where knowing altitude is crucial for safety and navigation. Proper calibration and understanding of the instrument's operation are essential for accurate altitude measurements.

User questions & answers

Question: i saw the video on tthe site and was wondering is there a certain type of camera, i would need to purchase for this? thanks, james
Answer: Not easily - the pump is on the input end of the intake hose and the auto-shutoff sensor is at the output end of the discharge hose... both the hoses and the wiring inside of each hose would have to be extended and sealed.
Question: Will multiple motors give false readings
Answer: This product never worked for me. I purchased it to transfer fuels to equipment. The hoses might be easy to clean, but the pump would be impossible. Any milk left in would quickly sour and spoil the next batch. Its non-repairable, so save your money and avoid the Chinese products.
Question: How long will an AltimeterThree run on a single charge
Answer: You don't need gravity, it will draw out of the gas can. What you do need to be aware of is, after it automatically shuts off (if you have it set up properly) you may still have some gas left in the clear hose of the pump. All you have to do at that point is to either allow the gas to flow into the tank your tying to fill or back into the can that your pumping from. This is because once the pump shuts off, there will be gas still left in the hose. Just raise the hose up to empty into the tank or raise it higher than the gas can your pumping from and it will empty back into that can. It's actually very simple to do but not as simple to explain. Bottom line is that I'm very pleased with this pump, I have a 5 gallon can connected to it on a shop cart and I just wheel it over to what needs filling and it's great!
Question: Any data on accuracy? I’m not too picky but it would be good to know the expected error range
Answer: No. Not enough pressure nor will it pull the water from the bottom of your tank. Best bet is some kind of pond pump or larger.

User questions & answers

Question: is it mounted by adhesive pad? suction cup
Answer: Yes, the car air purifiers makes very little noise when it's working, unless it's close to your ear.
Question: What are the dimensions of this
Answer: After the USB Air Purifier Car is inserted into the charging hole of the car, when it needs to be pulled out, please turn around and loosen first before pulling out.
Question: does it show from sea level up
Answer: No, I have both in my car, and this car air purifier doesn't neutralize the fragrance of my air freshener. It attacks and eliminate bacteria, virus, allergens and contaminants that cause odors through oxidation, and then converts safely back into standard oxygen.
Question: does it require a battery or wiring in to car
Answer: Because materials that come into contact with the liquid being pumped are not certified for use with potable water.

Question: whats the low end of the altimeter? basically want to know if it measures going below sea level while on land. thnx
Answer: It should not give false readings
Question: Is the alarm volume adjustable (i.e. to make it louder)? If yes, how specifically? I could not find this feature
Answer: AltimeterThree run time depends on the mode. It runs 5 hours in Rocket Mode and 16+ hours in Kite Mode with the newest firmware ending in "STK".
Question: Is it difficult to change the band on this watch
Answer: No data, just casual observation. When tossed in the air by hand it is accurate to less than a foot. It matched ( within 10 ft) our theodolite measurements on a rocket that reached 820 ft.
Question: Does it only indicate current temperature, or can it keep track of max & min
Answer: No, The Car Purifier and Air Ionizer are guaranteed for one year. The product does not work. Please contact us to replace it

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product meaure altitude gain or feet above sea level
Answer: I haven't measured it but would estimate to be about 2-1/4 inches square. I have it on my dashboard to the left of my steering wheel. It is visible but not in the way. The numbers are pretty small but it is easy to read because of the discrete 1000' lines.
Question: Is this something I can duck tape to my truck dashboard to see the altitude as I travel
Answer: Yes, the smallest altitude displayed is 0'. However, it should be noted that in the very few instances where you might be somewhat below sea level, the needle will move to the left of the 0' indicator (thus reading say 15,800' feet - in such instances, you would certainly know by your surroundings that you were not above 15K', but rather 200' below sea level).
Question: Can you use this to determine total ascent and descent (they should be the same if you start and end at the same point) over a several mile hike
Answer: Hi Matt, the altimeter does not use any wiring or battery to operate. An altimeter uses the various "pressures" from the sea shore to the highest mountain passes. When I got mine, I set it to 500', which is our elevation during the winter. Travelling through the Nevada mountain passes, the meter hit the elevation, according to the pass elevation signs along side the road, right on the nose. We were at 7600' and it was very accurate. If you are thinking of getting one, rest easy, as they are great once the original elevation is set. That's very simple, also. Good luck.
Question: Hallo, is it possible to display the measure in meters? Thanks
Answer: This is an altimeter. A camera would be a completely separate item, so you can get whatever you want. It wouldn't connect to this device.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the temperature and barometer be calibrated/ adjusted? How long does it sample air pressure for weather perdiction 12/24/48 hours
Answer: No the volume can not be adjusted
Question: Does it really say "clook" on it? Should be clock right
Answer: I've done that. Had a old Casio same model with good band. The band is attached with metal compression cylinders to the watch. Need a jeweler's screwdriver to compress the cylinders to remove the old and attach the new. Hard to explain but it's obvious when you try it.
Question: Does this come with two or one the picture shows two
Answer: only real temperature
Question: Does two comes with it or just one
Answer: It is mounted on an adhesive pad. Once the pad is mounted, it'll take some serious effort to peel it off the dashboard. The alt. itself can be removed from the pad and used for a hike, bike ride, etc.

User questions & answers

Question: Just wondering if this is the 203F or the 203M model, picture is of 203F, however model # is not specified. Thanks
Answer: No. It's designed for flying things. Technically, you could put it in realtime mode, and see how the elevation CHANGES (higher or lower) from when you turned it on, but it's not really designed to be a dashboard altimeter. If you did decide to use it in your truck despite this, you'll want to get the snap mount to keep it classy. "Duck" tape is not the way to go when it comes to mounting a flight altimeter in your pickup.
Question: Do you have to adjust this altimeter periodically to get an accurate reading
Answer: This altimeter is really not designed for hiking, so I would not advise that you buy it for that (it's a flying altimeter). By the way, I'm the designer.Other answers are correct: it will show altitude change (when in Realtime mode) since it was started. But on a hike of any decent duration, the weather may change, perhaps as much as 20-50 feet as a high or low pressure front moves in. So over the course of hours, you would have to factor that in. It's really designed for short (
Question: where is this product made
Answer: Yes you can have feet or meters however feet is more accurate, if you need that, and then just multiply it by 0.3048 to get meters.
Question: Can this be used in Nepal or other 3rd world countries
Answer: Don’t know, haven’t had it below sea level yet.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it chime every hour on the hour
Answer: This is the "feet" model, not the "meters" model. If you are looking for the meters model you can visit the manufacturers website (Search Sun Co.). Also, the feet model shows barometric pressure in inches of mercury, and the meters model shows barometric pressure in hectoPascals.
Question: Would this fit a female wrist
Answer: A son-in-law was thrilled to get one for XMAS, having planned an assault on Rainier. Yes, you do have to compensate for local weather patterns. There are two ways to do this: 1) If you know your altitude where you are now, set the instrument to that altitude. 2) If you don't know your present altitude, you can set the sea level pressure to that of the nearest weather station. These "altimeter settings" are broadcast on NOAA weather frequencies. If you need to have more accurate values, you can use method (1), and adjust for changes to altitude according to method (2). The instrument just measures the weight of the atmosphere above you, and so needs to be adjusted to the conditions that can vary in space and time. A barometric altimeter has been used by aircraft and explorers (such as Whitney and Williamson, who have western mountain peaks named after them--the 1st and 2nd highest in the Sierras). And it can be more accurate than uncompensated GPS, where altitude ranging is the least accurate of the three dimensions. But the user needs to be aware of its operation, advantages and limitations. Relative sensitivity can be as low as +/- 50 feet, but absolute accuracy depends upon local calibration.
Question: does the Black version of this watch also have a black wristband? because the product description describes the wristband as being green, but the pic
Answer: Great product, made in Japan.
Question: I just received this watch and set up time, date, etc. How do you access baro, temp and alt, and instruction don't provide any info either
Answer: Mine is in feet, so if your location typically uses meters, that adds a bit of complexity. Especially since this device, like all altimeters of this type, are barometers and measure air pressure changes. You'll need to reset it as you come across locations of known altitudes. So that can become a more complex and error prone process if your local/known altitudes are in a unit that is different than your altimeter. See 203F vs 203M.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you switch the output to ten digit grid format
Answer: Thanks for the question. To add to the great answer you already got, you could use the included clip to clip it to your hat, but you might find it a bit heavy if it's on your brim, for example. The Canmore Golf GPS attaches to the clip using a magnet, so it's possible to remove it when you're ready to check the yardage. Please let us know if you have further questions or comments at [email protected].
Question: Does this provide both mgrs and lat/long
Answer: Have used it 4x since I bought it. Don’t know the magnet you are referring to. So far it’s doing great. Takes a long time to recharge.
Question: What is the onboard memory? And does it come with any topo maps
Answer: Thanks for the great question. The H-300 comes with a charging cord only. We recommend using a computer or laptop USB port to charge the device (using the included cable), since the power output is better regulated (5 volts). Phone chargers such as an iPhone charger can also be used but be sure to use a high quality charger that only provides 5v — some inexpensive 'fast charger' models, especially car chargers, can sometimes exceed 5v and damage your H-300. Lastly, always unplug the charging cable at both ends after use. Addicidental contact with conductive surfaces may damage the cable or charging port. Please let us know if you have further questions or comments at [email protected]. (Note that Amazon may not notify us when you reply here, so please use the email option if possible!)
Question: Would you recommend the Foretrex 601 for runners
Answer: In my case for a full season up north. Had about 60 rounds on the current batteries. The current batteries still working. I carry an extra in my bag just in case.

User questions & answers

Question: Can disposable battery replaced the rechargeable battery
Answer: I use my altimeter for competitive shooting. I wanted an analog device in the event my digital equipment failed. So far it has been as accurate as my digital device and is easy to read. I would recommend this device.
Question: How accurate is the altimeter of the elecsmart sunroad fr500? i am thinking of taking this up a mountain and was wondering what it's accuracy was
Answer: Yes, that's what it's for. It comes with a case and strong small rope like thing to wear around your neck or tie to your pack. It won't do the math for you but it will tell you your present elevation. It won't be 100% accurate at all times due to fluxation of atmospheric pressure, but we are talking a few feet off not hundreds. I took mine on a day hike up Mt Sneffels and it was exactly accurate on the top.
Question: Can the altimeter be set to show the highest reading? Like if I went up and down the mountain could it show what the highest was
Answer: Great simple product, no batteries needed. Does what it is supposed to. We take it hiking, driving the mountains, even skiing.
Question: How long does the change last
Answer: Probably because most people are idoits and don't understand this thing is a classic altimeter that measures barometric pressure and should be adjusted hourly for a flawless reading. I took mine to Mt Sneffels and adjusted it for pressure and had a perfect reading all through out Colorado. You just have to understand that the weight of the atmosphere changes a little constantly. When I put it on my desk at home and don't mess with it it will sometimes say it's 100 feet higher than yesterday because the pressure changed. I find it works great being adjusted daily for mountain hiking. It will get you easily within 100 feet of actual altitude if you never touch it at all.
