13 best snowboard waxes
Snowboard wax is a crucial component in the maintenance and performance of a snowboard. It is designed to enhance the glide of the board over snow and ice, improve control, and extend the life of the base. Here's what you need to know about snowboard waxes:
Function: Snowboard wax serves multiple purposes, including reducing friction between the base of the board and the snow, increasing speed, and providing better control and maneuverability. It prevents the base from drying out and becoming rough, which can lead to slower rides and reduced performance.
Types of Wax: There are various types of snowboard wax available, each designed for specific snow conditions. The main types include:
- Temperature-Specific Wax: These waxes are formulated for specific temperature ranges. Common categories include cold wax (for very cold conditions), all-temperature wax (for a wide range of conditions), and warm wax (for slushy or wet snow).
- Fluorinated Wax: This type of wax contains fluorocarbon additives that reduce friction even further, making it suitable for racing and high-performance snowboarding. However, it can be more expensive than regular waxes.
- Hydrocarbon Wax: Hydrocarbon waxes are budget-friendly options that provide basic waxing benefits. They are less expensive but may not offer the same performance as temperature-specific or fluorinated waxes.
Application: Applying snowboard wax involves heating the wax and spreading it evenly on the base of the board. There are two common methods:
- Hot Waxing: In this method, a waxing iron is used to melt the wax, which is then spread evenly across the base. After cooling, excess wax is scraped off, leaving a smooth and waxed surface.
- Rub-On Wax: Rub-on waxes are applied directly to the base without the need for heat. They are convenient for quick touch-ups but may not provide as long-lasting performance as hot waxing.
Waxing Tools: To wax a snowboard, you'll need several tools, including a waxing iron (for hot waxing), wax brushes, a plastic scraper, and a waxing table or surface to hold the board.
Frequency: How often you wax your snowboard depends on factors such as snow conditions, frequency of use, and personal preference.Generally, waxing is recommended every few days of riding or whenever you notice decreased performance.
Scraping and Brushing: After applying the wax and allowing it to cool, excess wax is scraped off using a plastic scraper. Then, brushes are used to remove any remaining wax particles and to create a smooth, polished surface.
Storage: It's essential to store your snowboard properly to maintain the wax job. Store it in a cool, dry place, and avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
Safety: When applying wax, it's crucial to do so in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes from heated wax. Additionally, take safety precautions when using a waxing iron to prevent burns or damage to your board.
In summary, snowboard wax is a vital element of snowboard maintenance, as it improves performance, control, and the overall riding experience. Choosing the right type of wax for the snow conditions and properly applying and maintaining it can significantly impact your snowboarding adventures.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fill in a rock gouge or do I need to buy a repair kit as well |
Answer: | My opinion is not that of a professional ski tuner but here is what I know. Deep is a relative term so look at it this way. If the gouge goes down to the core of the ski then take it to a shop to have it filled with P-Tex or, repair it with P-Tex. There are many you-tube videos that will show you how to do P-Tex repair yourself and I think Amazon has P-Tex candles and materials to do it. As for the waxing over a gouge goes, yes it will fill the groove left by rocks just trim and or clean up the gouge so it is nice and clean and does not have any loose peices hanging off of it. I really like the Hot Sauce wak but it is definitely not made to "repair" core shots. |
Question: | How do you apply this cold? Do you just directly rub the brick on the base? Do need to buy a cork to work it in or a brush to remove excess |
Answer: | Hi, I know you asked this question a while back, but for the benefit of others who look here... I just want to note that this is a pretty big block to just apply cold. If you're applying it cold it's because you just want a quick wax w/o taking it in to hot wax it. Doing it cold is by no means as good as hot waxing. You'll want to buy a regular "Scotch Brite" pad (http://amzn.com/B00978X97W), or a "waxing cork" (http://amzn.com/B000WVIUIQ)... Once you have the wax and either of the other two items you just rub the board with the wax back and forth, applying medium pressure. After you've done this to the whole board use the cork or the pad to essentially buff the wax. The easier it gets as you're buffing the closer you are to finishing. You'll be done when you can smoothly glide over the base with the scotch brite or cork. Have fun out there, and be safe! |
Question: | How do you apply this to skis |
Answer: | With a wax iron. There are a number of videos on YouTube that demonstrate how to do this. There a few key steps (do not attempt to do these without first watching a video so that you clearly understand how to properly complete each step).1) Clean skis/board (several methods for cleaning, my preference is to do a quick wax job and then immediately scrape off with a plastic scraper), 2) Wax skis/Board (use iron to drip wax onto board/skis and then smooth with iron).3) Wait 30-60 minutes for wax to cool4) Scrape wax off with plastic scraper (only scraper in one direction and ensure scraper is leaning in direction you are scraping)5) Further remove wax with a Scotch Brite Pad (do not press to hard and only go in one direction)6) Lightly score board in cross pattern with horse-hair brush. |
Question: | Is this a good all-temp wax for cross country skis |
Answer: | I can't comment on cross country skiing, but it is great all-temp alpine ski. Last weekend I was skiing +10C to -5C temps without issue. I've also skied in -20C temps and it performed well. In warmer temps I do crayon it on every night to ensure my bases don't get to dry. Hope this helps. |

DEYS Wax, for waxing alpine skis, cross-country skis and snowboards, the product of Nordic company Don't Eat Yellow Snow, there are 4 TEMP models (catalogue number 0403, 0404, 0405, 0406), in a solid of a net weight equal 115 g. The wax is wrapped in plastic, marked and lockable box.
Recommended on every kind of snow.
Exceptionally resistant to pulverizing. Recommended for regeneration of damaged and destroyed glide. It is also a good wax for hard, glaciated or artificial snow.
- It is very hydrophobic (doesn’t react with water molecules and so it is very resistant to water).
- Thanks to its properties, it lowers the amount of electrostatic energy between snow and glide (it eliminates assembling and hooking on the dust).
- When temperature decreases, wax becomes harder. Due to this, tension between snow and slide decreases (it is more resistant to pulverizing).

User questions & answers
Question: | I know it says all tempiture but Will this wax work in -20 to 50 f° weather |
Answer: | Iron on waxes penetrates the base material allowing them to be effective for eight to ten days of skiing/snowboarding. However, this time frame is dependent on weather conditions as very cold and dry weather breaks wax down faster. Also, time between trips to the hill will allow the base material to dry out, a ski left on the shelf will start to dry out after a week or so. |
Question: | Is the wax biodegradable |
Answer: | This is an iron on wax. Do an internet search for "waxing skis". |
Question: | Does it smell like anything/have a flavor |
Answer: | A nice easy pace. Medium heat on the iron and just don’t keep it one place longer than a second. You should see the wax melt than start to cool as you move along the board. |
Question: | is it a actual pound |
Answer: | There are no ventilation panels. |

Question: | Does this require using an iron |
Answer: | Good for skiing, snowboarding & cross country as well. Some people even put it on the wooden toboggans! Cross country skiers tend to prefer high fluoro wax vs non-fluoro wax but this will work as well. This wax was created specifically for skis & snowboards, here is cross country specific high fluoro rub on wax: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016L39PNM?m=A2X2VU9YUWGIRS |
Question: | Could you use this just as a rub on wax |
Answer: | Please refer to the following video for the instructions on how to apply ZUMWax rub on wax: https://youtu.be/TU_aFvpE44c In short best way to apply rub on wax is at the room temperature onto warm skis or snowboard. Take the stick out of the container and rub it on your ski or board bases. Flaking in not a problem. Put the stick back into the container, screw the top back on and rub on with the cork on top of the container. Polish until you see a solid shine on your base. You can use regular shower towel for the same results. Please watch the video - it will help a lot: https://youtu.be/TU_aFvpE44c |

Question: | I have waxing cross country skis and need a new glider wax for the tips and tails... will this work |
Answer: | It always prevents ice build up. You could try maxiglide maxx Waxx as well for you alpine skis and snowboard |
Question: | can I apply this to cold skis ? Must the skis be at room temperature |
Answer: | This is for Nordic skis. The max wax is a bit harder and buffs in great for downhill skis and snowboards. |
Question: | Do I have to buff skis with a cork of felt brush after applying this liquid wax |
Answer: | I have yet to use it for skiing. It is great for pre-treating your snow shovel so that the snow does not stick. I do not know if it is petroleum or fragrance free. |
Question: | How does this wax work for above 32 degrees |
Answer: | I have never had a problem with Swix Easy Glide icing up. I have had Maxiglide when buffing it over a hard base wax mix with the base wax resulting in a soft wax that was slow and iced up. Easy Glide never did that. |
