13 best dj turntable cartridges

DJ turntable cartridges are critical components in a DJ's setup, as they directly impact the quality of sound and performance during mixing and scratching. These cartridges are specifically designed for use with vinyl records and turntables. Here are some key aspects to know about DJ turntable cartridges:

  1. Cartridge Types: There are two main types of DJ turntable cartridges: moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC).

    • Moving Magnet (MM) Cartridges: MM cartridges are more common and typically less expensive. They generate a voltage by moving a magnet within a fixed coil. They are known for their durability and ease of use, making them suitable for beginner and intermediate DJs.

    • Moving Coil (MC) Cartridges: MC cartridges are known for their superior sound quality but are often more expensive and less common. They work by moving a coil within a fixed magnet. MC cartridges are preferred by experienced DJs and audiophiles due to their detailed sound reproduction.

  2. Stylus Compatibility: DJ cartridges usually have replaceable stylus tips, which are the small, diamond-tipped needles that make direct contact with the vinyl record. Different stylus shapes (e.g., spherical, elliptical, conical) are designed for specific applications, such as scratching or precision mixing.

  3. Tracking Force: DJs must set the correct tracking force for their cartridges. This refers to the downward pressure applied to the stylus on the record. Proper tracking force ensures optimal sound quality and prevents excessive wear on both the cartridge and the records.

  4. Channel Configuration: Cartridges come in various channel configurations, with the most common being single-channel (mono) and dual-channel (stereo). Stereo cartridges are used for regular vinyl playback, while mono cartridges are suitable for older mono records.

  5. Output Voltage: DJ cartridges have different output voltage levels, typically measured in millivolts (mV). DJs should choose a cartridge with an output voltage that matches their mixer's phono input for best performance.

  6. Headshell Mounting: DJ cartridges are usually mounted on a headshell, which attaches to the tonearm of the turntable. Compatibility with different headshell types and tonearms should be considered.

  7. Scratch Performance: For DJs who specialize in scratching and turntablism, cartridges with robust tracking capabilities, high output, and durable stylus tips are preferred to withstand the rigors of scratching.

  8. Sound Quality: Sound quality is a top priority for many DJs. Cartridges with high-quality components and precise engineering can deliver clear, detailed, and balanced sound.

  9. Replacement Parts: DJ cartridges often allow for stylus replacement, which can extend the lifespan of the cartridge. Some cartridges even have user-replaceable styli, simplifying maintenance.

  10. Brand and Model Varieties: Various brands specialize in DJ turntable cartridges, including Shure, Ortofon, Audio-Technica, Stanton, and more. DJs often choose cartridges based on personal preferences and the specific characteristics they require for their style of mixing.

Choosing the right DJ turntable cartridge involves considering factors such as budget, desired sound quality, mixing style (e.g., scratching or beatmatching), and compatibility with your existing equipment. DJs often experiment with different cartridges and stylus shapes to find the combination that best suits their needs and preferences.

Ortofon 2M Red

The 2M Red features an improved engine, which provides an increased output of 5.5 mV and an optimized sound reproduction and a high level of sonic accuracy

The stylus features a tipped Elliptical diamond and split pole pins with a copper wire. The cartridge body is manufactured from Hopelex which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances.

2M Red is an all-purpose cartridge that delivers open, dynamic sound with a slight touch of warmth.

Included with 2M Red:

History of the 2M Series

The 2M Series was developed in conjunction with the Danish designer Moeller Jensen Design. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record’s surface, the 2M’s handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality.

Of course, the 2M isn’t just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with Ortofon’s unrelenting commitment to providing the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without coloration.

The name “2M” was chosen as it represents the abbreviation for moving magnet, MM.

The four-model 2M line was originally introduced in 2008, and since then the range has been extended to include True-mono models 2M MONO and 78. Also available are models with expanded mounting options, such as Verso for bottom mount headshells and PnP for direct mounting on arms with universal mount.

Advancements in Sound

The differences among the 2M variants concern three primary areas: engine, body material and stylus profile.

The entire 2M Series features Ortofon’s split pole pins, an invention which enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response as with a moving coil cartridge. Split pole pins were invented by Ortofon and were originally presented in the 500 and Ortofon OM Super Series.

The 2M 78, 2M Mono, 2M Red and 2M Blue use an improved engine, which provides an optimized sound reproduction and a high level of sonic accuracy.

The 2M Bronze and 2M Black use a special upgraded engine, featuring split pole pins with a silver-plated copper wire. The cartridge body material used for the 2M Bronze and 2M Black is manufactured from Lexan DMX Piano Black, a revolutionary material which ensures high rigidity while eliminating unwanted resonances.

Product of Denmark

Today Ortofon is a micro-mechanical powerhouse, which develops, manufactures and markets the world acclaimed Ortofon cartridges and components for the hearing aids industry.

We benefit from being established in Denmark, a country recognized for its strong tradition in acoustics and its wealth of other high-end manufacturers, who make hearing aids and acoustic measurement equipment, in addition to all aspects of high-end audio.

Ortofon is owned by Danish businessmen and employs a staff of 100 people. The Ortofon manufacturing unit in Nakskov in the south of Denmark has modern machinery combined with experienced operators, so human craftsmanship is delivered with uniform industrial quality.

Care of Stylus

With proper care we find that up to 1,000 hours is possible without degradation of performance. The stylus does begin to exhibit changes after 1,000 hours, but the stylus life as a whole is expected to top 2,000 hours.

Proper care is comprised of the following:

• Cleaning of record by means of fibre brush before and after every use. Cleaning of record by using record cleaning machine once in a while.

• Cleaning of stylus by means of a fine antistatic brush. Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record. Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge towards the stylus tip, never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.

• Proper adjustment of alignment, antiskating, azimuth and tracking force.

• Ortofon do not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus.

Ease of Use

The weight and dimensions of the 2M Series have been optimized to fit the most common turntables on the market today. The cartridge body has also been streamlined to provide easy mounting and alignment. The 2M series features threaded holes that allows for easy mounting on tonearm and headshells without nuts. 2M cartridges provide excellent compatibility in an assortment of playback systems and with a wide variety of phono preamps

In the beginning was the sound track

On the 9th of October 1918, the two Danish engineers, Axel Petersen (1887-1971) and Arnold Poulsen (1889-1952) founded the Electrical Phono Film Company with a few capable and foresighted businessmen who would support the organization financially.

Their aim was to explore the possibility of high-class recording and developing one of the first synchronized sound film systems in the world. Under primitive conditions, the two Danish engineers and their small staff had to solve a number of what were considered insuperable problems.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with my at-lp120xbt-usb? thank
Answer: it certainly should. Most headshells fit a standard tonearm and the VM540 is a great cartridge. Do some googling to see what others recommend as some TTs and Cartridges pair better than others. I use the VM540ML on an older Philips turntable and love the sound.
Question: For the vm540ml/h combo, does anyone know what the overhang is set at
Answer: Mine is set to 52mm - I used an overhang measuring tool and then adjusted to my turntable specifically.
Question: If I buy the headshell and cartridge does it come already mounted? Is that the combo kit or just the headshell and cartridge
Answer: I just ordered the VM540 and head-shell combo - they came as two separate packages so it is NOT premounted. This cartridge was harder than usual to mount - the tiny lead wire clamps were so tight I had to use a lot of careful force to get them to slide onto the cartridge (scary) and you are provided with 3 sets of screws - it's up to you to figure out which will work (the medium size screws for the silver head-shell). Next you need to go through and set the overhang and adjust the cartridge so it will track parallel to the groves on a record (these require the screwdriver to loosen the screws enough to move the cartridge slightly - be EXTREMELY careful not to damage the stylus), the tracking force, and of course the anti-skating. If you have a good stereo system you may be able to adjust the impedance (47K so I selected the 50K option which was closest) and the capacitance (I found 100pF works the best).
Question: How much better is this over the vm95e dual magnet phono cartridge
Answer: The 540 is near the top of the line of AT cartridges. It is superb especially for the money. It blows the 95E out of the water!

Audio-Technica VM540ML

The VM540ML MicroLine stylus cartridge is the premier 500 Series model in Audio-Technica’s new VM cartridge line – a line that harks back to A-T’s early days as a manufacturer primarily of high-end phono cartridges, while also incorporating today’s advanced technology. Like all VM cartridges, the VM540ML is equipped with dual magnets that are positioned to match the left and right channels in the stereo record groove for outstanding channel separation and extended frequency response.

The cartridge’s MicroLine stylus allows it to trace the record groove with incredible accuracy, resulting in nuanced audio reproduction that elliptical and conical styli simply can’t match. The stylus’s multilevel shape also wears better than other styli, while reducing the wear on your records. Includes mounting hardware.

Para-toroidal coils improve generating efficiency and offers superb linearity, since leakage of magnetic flux in this continuous and unitised magnetic circuit is low. Permeability of the cores is also optimised through the use of laminated cores.

A permalloy centre shield plate enables the effective separation of left and right channels, suppressing electrical crosstalk to below 40dB. This is similar to the actual crosstalk value found in the grooves of the record itself.

A-T’s Dual Magnet Design Replicates the Structure of the Cutter Head

Instead of using a single, large magnet, the two magnets are arranged in the shape of a 'V'. The two magnets are positioned precisely to match the positions of the left and right channels in the stereo groove walls. Consequently, the VM design ensures outstanding channel separation, extended frequency response and superb tracking.

MicroLine Stylus

MicroLine profile diamond stylus offers high frequency response with less wear and distortion than elliptical or conventional linear contact styli.

500 Series

Standard cartridge body fitted with the para-toroidal coils, centre shield plate, and 6N-OFC coil wire which is the same as 700 series.

Replacement & Upgrade Styli

The cartridge becomes worn after an extended period of play, even the finest diamond stylus. Our VM cartridges can be used again for a long time only by replacing the stylus. Our renewed VM cartridges have 7 styli and 3 types of bodies. Not only it is not necessary to buy the cartridge itself, but also you experience the enjoyment of upgrade or various combination of VM cartridges.

Answer: Hi, This Neoteck Digital Turntable Stylus is used for Ensuring the Playback Result and Life of Your Valuable Records and Cartidge, it may not work in a vertical position, if you want it's value precise, it should be laying flat. Thanks for your asking.Neoteck
Question: Why does it come with three batteries? It takes two to operate, so one extra doesn't make much sense, does it
Answer: Here's a question! Why are you asking because in reality they didn't have to send you any batteries!! I'll tell you, someone is trying to be accommodating, oops maybe you drop and lose one of those little batteries, or maybe one of them is older than the other one or MAYBE, you just got lucky and got three good batteries!? The point being, these guys were being both accommodating and convenient so you can open the package and use it on the spot...... ok wait for it...... ahhhh. AND they, are probably one of a billion vendors that actually tried to plan to help you even beyond, YOU losing the battery, or YOU need to go get new ones. Because the drawing power is not very much from this unit, but when you start to notice it getting faint or doesn't turn on, I'm going to bet you that you'll be able to put that extra battery in and it will work again, you might just want to check it between the two that are dying! Lololol. Who knows..... maybe they put in 3 batteries so people will talk about them??! Oooooo those are the guys that give you 3 batteries and the unit only takes 2?! Lol 😉. Just having fun, it's funny because you read a comment or review and you think... hey I know what the answer is maybe I can help someone out, or maybe you just want to bust someone's balls!!! 😬🙄. But by the time you're done with all the typing and all the thought you put into it, you don't even know what the hell the whole idea of yourself thinking that you're going to make a point!
Question: Will this work for a dual moving magnet cartridge
Answer: It should work for any type of cartridge. The only thing that touches the scale is the stylus. Just to set the weight on the stylus.
Question: Will this digital scale work for a Audio-Technica lp120 record player
Answer: Hi James, I have this digital scale. Should work fine for measuring the needle pressure on an audio-technical lp120 turntable

Question: How does this sound on 45 rpm 12" vinyl? Is there any noticeable difference? Is it just as good, or is conical better? Thanks

Question: Does this headshell fit on a technics 1200 mkii
Answer: It should, but I recommend that you ask the manufacturer. This way if it doesn't fit he will send it back for a refund :)
Question: What's the difference between Atvm95e and the At95ex

Question: Is this cartridge less noisy than the AT95E
Answer: What kind of noise are we talking about...I sold a turn table because the cartridge was picking up the sound of motor. At this price point I consider this reasonably quiet...also check your ground.

Product features

Ortofon Concorde MK2 Mix

The MIX is a general-purpose model for scratch and back-cueing.

• Provides great performance and durability. It has a good quality spherical stylus, a solid cantilever, and serves general purposes well. • It offers both reasonable output, high sound quality and a good tracking ability for virtually any style of music. • With transparent sound across the spectrum and excellent handling ability, the MIX represents one of the longest running values in DJ cartridges.

Excellent cost-to-performance ratio.

How to replace a stylus

Firstly lock the turntable tone arm, unscrew the cartridge, gently remove the stylus from the cartridge and insert a new stylus. A stylus is changed usually by pulling straight out and in the opposite direction of the turntable's arm. If the stylus doesn't come with directions, try these: with one hand, hold the cartridge to steady it. With the other hand, using a pair of tweezers, grasp the stylus from both sides and pull. Install the new stylus: holding the stylus from the top, press it gently into the space at the tip of the cartridge where the old stylus had been. Don't force it.

Proper care comprises the following:

Cleaning of record by means of carbon fibre brush before and after every use. Cleaning of record by using record cleaning machine once in a while.

Cleaning of stylus by means of a fine antistatic brush. Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record. Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge towards the stylus tip and never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side.

Proper adjustment of antiskating, azimuth and tracking force.

Options and Replacement Styli

The Concorde MK2 Series is available for purchase as either a single cartridge or a "Twin" set including two cartridges (both with pre-installed styli) and an aluminum flight case.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with my Bang & Olufsen Beogram
Answer: Nothing but beogram cartridges will work with B&O turntables. Other guy answer suggested that you need p-mount cartridge and that was incorrect.
Question: Will this work for my sony ps-lx
Answer: Does your sony PS-LX435 have a standard 1/2" bayonet release headshell attached to the tonearm? Then yes. Is it a linear P-mount? Then no.
Question: Does the stylus come with a guard? And if not where could I buy one
Answer: yes. slip on clear soft plastic, covers the stylus.
Question: For Whatever reasons this cartridge seems to be lightly scraping up against my vinyl. Can anyone tell me why that is? It's becoming really annoying
Answer: When you say "scraping against vinyl", do you mean that the base of it is touching the record surface? If yes, there could be 4 reasons: 1. The tracking force is too high, 2. The cantilever is damaged and doesn't form the correct angle with the base, as shown on the pic., 3a. The longitudinal axis of the tonearm is at a wrong angle to the record (some arms' pivots have height adjustment), or 3b. The slipmat is too thick - e.g. you put a new one on the turntable without removing the existing one.Or, it's making a scratchy sound, but doesn't seem to be physically grinding against the record?
